Paramount Revving Up “Noisy, Sexy” Reboot Of The Italian Job
Citing both the 1969 original and its subsequent 2003 remake as inspiration, Paramount is said to be revving up a new interpretation of The Italian Job for TV.

Deadline broke the news yesterday evening, confirming that Rob Weiss (Ballers, Entourage) and Benjamin Brand will join forces to flesh out the script, before going on to executive produce alongside Donald De Line, the producer involved in that 2003 remake headlined by Charlize Theron and Mark Wahlberg.

If you’re unfamiliar with the property, The Italian Job is a British crime caper centering on a make-shift family of expert criminals. Forced out of retirement to complete one last job – a time-honored action trope if ever there was one – their mission involves rescuing their beloved “patriarch” from a long sentence behind bars. Charlie Croker, played by Michael Caine and later Wahlberg, is the crooning ex-con at the heart of the story, with Deadline noting that the...

Newswire: Rev up the Mini Coopers: The Italian Job is coming to TV
NBC is working on a TV version of iconic heist caper movie The Italian Job. That’s per Deadline, which says that the network has given a script commitment to a new crime drama based on the 1969 Michael Caine classic. The show is being written and produced by Ballers’ Rob Weiss, whose old Entourage co-producer Mark Wahlberg starred in the original’s 2003 remake.

NBC is promising a “noisy, sexy, thrill-ride” with its new show, along with—presumably—a whole host of product placement for BMW’s Mini Cooper. Coopers—originally produced by the British Motor Corporation—were a key component of the climax of both films, with the Quincy Jones-scored Cooper chase from the original a regular entry in lists of the best cinematic car chases of all time.

A sequel to the 2003 film, tentatively titled The Brazilian Job, has been in the works for years, but ...

How will the heist film classic translate to the small screen? NBC is planning to find out...

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that NBC has given a script commitment to a TV series based on The Italian Job. The show will follow a found family of expert criminals who come out of retirement to try to save their beloved patriarch from jail. Like the previous films, the TV show will feature the character of Charlie Croker at its centre, a criminal trying to go straight, but who can't help but get pulled back into this adrenaline-fuelled world of high-stakes crime. You know how it is.

Unlike the movies, it seems that the show will feature a prison break rather than a heist. But, hey, who says we can't have both? According to the report, the show hopes to "preserve the action, humour, romance and picturesque international locales from the movies.

IndieWire Turns 20: An Oral History of Supporting Filmmakers and Partying at Sundance From Those Who Lived It
On July 15, 1996, IndieWire launched as an e-mail newsletter providing “the daily news service for independent film.” (See the first newsletter here.) The original iteration of the site was the brainchild of Cheri Barner, Eugene Hernandez and Mark Rabinowitz, three recent college students obsessed with the movies. In the ensuing years, IndieWire grew and changed hands many times over. Barner now works as a talent manager in Los Angeles, Hernandez is the deputy director of the Film Society Lincoln Center, and Rabinowitz is a freelance publicist, consultant and programmer.

But they have remained a part of our close-knit community. As IndieWire arrives at its 20th anniversary, the trio gathered together for their first joint interview to recall the early days of IndieWire — as well as the thriving American independent film scene that inspired the publication.

Eugene Hernandez: IndieWire was an outgrowth of something that Mark, Cheri and I had started in 1995. At the time,...

'American Psycho' at 25: Bret Easton Ellis on Patrick Bateman's Legacy
Christian Bale in American Psycho (2000)
Before American Psycho came out, 25 years ago this month, it was already the most controversial novel of the Nineties. Its vivid depictions of gruesome murders of women, men, children and animals preceded wherever it went. The original publisher dropped it and told author Bret Easton Ellis to keep the money — but to please go away. The New York Times titled its book review "Snuff This Book!" On the opposite coast, Los Angeles Times begrudgingly wrote that "Free Speech Protects Even an 'American Psycho.'" The National Organization of Women attempted to organize boycotts.

'Ballers' Season 2 Trailer: Dwayne Johnson Has a New Enemy
Dwayne Johnson in Ballers (2015)
'You're no one until you have enemies!' That's the tagline for Ballers as it prepares to unleash all-new episodes. Dwayne Johnson returns as Spencer Strasmore for Season 2 this summer on HBO. And it looks like he's not making new friends as much as he is setting up a bitter rivalry with a soon to be enemy, played by Andy Garcia. About continuing this hit drama, HBO Programming president had this to say.

"The charismatic and hugely talented Dwayne Johnson, along with the rest of the Ballers cast, has truly struck a chord with the HBO audience. We are thrilled with the overwhelming response the series has received and look forward to another exciting season."

A superstar during his football playing days, Spencer Strasmore tries to find the same success as a financial manager for current players in sun-splashed Miami. Heeding his boss Joe's instruction to "monetize his friendships," Spencer...

Entourage review: HBO's Hollywood hit lacks big screen sparkle
Kevin Dillon, Adrian Grenier, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Connolly, and Jerry Ferrara in Entourage (2004)
Director: Doug Ellin; Screenwriter: Doug Ellin, Rob Weiss; Starring: Kevin Connolly, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara, Jeremy Piven, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Billy Bob Thornton, Haley Joel Osment; Running time: 104 mins; Certificate: 15

An entertaining and undemanding watch on the small screen, HBO's Entourage lifted the lid on the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to show what it might be like to live the life of a movie A-lister. Heavy on star cameos and bro banter, the show whizzed by in 30-minute instalments and swiftly built up a cult following.

There was something hugely appealing about living vicariously through fast-rising star Vincent Chase and his boys from Queens. That's not to mention Jeremy Piven's agent Ari Gold, whose unwavering loyalty to Vince was matched only by his explosive temper.

An Entourage film has been long in the works, though its arrival long after the show's creative and pop cultural peak can't...

Review: 'Ballers' is the 'Entourage' Update You Wish the Movie Had Been
Kevin Dillon, Adrian Grenier, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Connolly, and Jerry Ferrara in Entourage (2004)
The financial failing and critical lashing the "Entourage" movie faced earlier this month proved the former HBO series had no place in modern society. Yet previews for the creative team's follow-up series looked an awful lot like what the bros' tried to sell us before. From former "Entourage" executive producers Rob Weiss, Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson comes "Ballers," a trip inside the lives of NFL athletes via their financial manager Spencer Strassmore. Played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (who also executive produced the new series), Spencer is an ex-Miami Dolphins linebacker known for his punishing hits more than his monetary wherewithal. But nothing will stop Spencer from winning over former teammates and rivals to his new business via outlandish parties, big money promises and lots and lots of women. Review: HBO's 'Ballers' Starring Dwayne Johnson
Producers Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg and Rob Weiss have hit upon an HBO formula that works: pick a high-powered industry, and then track a group of attractive people as they try to navigate through that world. "Entourage" has been their biggest success so far, though the recent big screen flop is an indication that their lightweight modus operandi doesn't have much in the way of substance or longevity. The fashion world set "How To Make It In America" was dropped after two seasons, which is a shame as the show included complex relationships and real struggle for its characters, though it was decidedly lacking with respect to the hot bods, hot cars and celebrity cameos common to "Entourage." It's those qualities that Levinson, Wahlberg, and Weiss return to in quantity with "Ballers," which is essentially "Entourage" in the world of sports, and this is surely no coincidence. There's at least one key difference that makes.

Entourage – The Review
And now another summertime staple appears at the multiplex: the feature film version of a television series. It’s not a recast movie adaptation of a beloved series from TV’s “golden” or “silver age” like Get Smart or The Fugitive nor one with an intense cult following that like Star Trek, which has inspired a long-running (over 35 years now) franchise (but who knows?). This series isn’t currently in production as with “The Simpsons” or “The X-Files” (which was still running on Fox TV when the first film premiered). This could be closer to Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, which hit theatres mere months after ABC TV’s show left the airwaves. But it’s closest, perhaps, to Sex And The City which made its movie debut just a few years after wrapping a successful run on “premium” cable channel HBO (as in “It’s not TV…it...

Review: Entourage, Exhausting And Insulting And Discouraging
The television series Entourage ran for eight seasons on HBO, but I checked out sometime during the third season in 2006, burned out on the show's consistently tasteless humor and refusal to engage with its subject matter on anything more than a surface level. The Entourage movie runs for 104 minutes, but my mind wanted to change the channel after the first 15 minutes, when it had become readily apparent that it would be nothing more than the most rudimentary, self-abusing treatment possible of what once sounded like a passably entertaining idea. Series creator Doug Ellin directed from a screenplay credited to himself and Rob Weiss. The movie begins a few short days after the conclusion of the series, and promptly junks the happy endings...

From HBO to the Big Screen: “Entourage” is back
As someone who doesn’t watch a whole lot of television, it’s rare for me to actually be looking forward to seeing a film that’s basically just an extended version of a TV show. A notable exception to that, however, happens to be Entourage, which hits screens this weekend after a long journey from HBO to theaters. One of the few shows I used to watch, it was always a hoot to look at Hollywood through essentially rose colored glasses (and yes, it was basically a fictionalized version of Mark Wahlberg’s early days in the business). Now, audiences worldwide get to reunite once again with movie star Vincent Chase, his literal entourage, and excitable super agent Ari Gold, among many others this week… For those of you unfamiliar with the show, it follows the adventures of actor Vincent Chase, who navigates Hollywood and being a movie star...

Watch The First Trailer For HBO Comedy Series Ballers Starring Dwayne Johnson
‘Franchise viagra’ man Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is taking a time out from global gallivanting and taking out bad guys with a swift flex of the bicep. Ahead of any potential involvement in another Fast & Furious instalment, he can next be seen onscreen in HBO’s upcoming comedy Ballers. The ten-episode season kicks off this summer with Johnson in the lead role as former football superstar Spencer Strasmore, whose post-career job finds him training upcoming athletes.

And to get you game-ready, Johnson himself has dropped the first trailer online. At first glance it seems to bear the hallmarks of its executive producer Mark Wahlberg’s handiwork (i.e. it’s a bit Entourage-esque), but that’s in no way a disparaging comparison. For the most part, the series looks to be finally making the most of Johnson’s comedic skills, which are usually only grazed upon in his big screen outings.

Rob Weiss To Helm "Hell's Angels" Movie
"Entourage" writer and producer Rob Weiss has come onboard to co-write and direct the long gestating "Hell's Angels" movie

The late Tony Scott was previously attached to helm the project which would've centered on Sonny Barger, the eighteen-year-old who founded the Oakland chapter of the notorious motorcycle gang in 1957.

Barger became a key figure in the gang's rise as an international organization. Jeffrey Santos will co-write the film which spans a time period between the 1950s and the 1970s.

One key scene is the The Rolling Stones concert in Altmont, California where the Angels were asked to provide security due to the stage being so low. One young man died, while a pregnant woman suffered a skull fracture.

Tony Scott's name will be kept on the film as a producer. Scott originally envisioned the film as a "Donnie Brasco"-esque thriller, whereas Weiss plans to shift the focus to...

Rob Weiss

The film will center on legendary member Sonny Barger, who founded the Oakland chapter of the notorious motorcycle gang in 1957, at the age of 18 years old. He became a key figure in the gang's rise as an international organization.

Jeffrey Santos will co-write the historical biopic, which will draw on the controversial life of Sonny Barger, beginning with the formation of the Hell's Angels itself.

Rob Weiss had this to say about the movie,

"We're approaching this as a genesis story of the motorcycle club culture. I've wanted to do something in the biker space for a long time. [It's] a period piece that explores the early days of the club, the philosophy of the formidable, most loyal brotherhood that started it and what drove Sonny,...

Production began as promised on 16th January, with creator Doug Ellin directing from his own script.

Scott Caan and Debi Mazar will be reprising their roles alongside the leading quintet, with Kate Upton reportedly sought for the female lead late last year.

The film is expected to feature the same kind of girl-chasing, larger-than-life party scenes from the original TV series, and will revolve around the making of a big-budget Dracula movie that stars Grenier’s Vincent Chase.

The Entourage guys are making a Fox sitcom about legalizing weed
Hoping to bring the same lacerating satirical sensibility to the drug war they previously, ostensibly lent to Hollywood, the Entourage production trio of Rob Weiss, Mark Wahlberg, and Steve Levinson are developing a comedy for Fox about the very timely topic of marijuana decriminalization—a subject deserving of the sort of trenchant, Swiftian comic observation that only a Fox sitcom and the makers of Entourage can provide. Titled The Happy Tree, at least until such a time as Giggles 'N Cheetos can be cleared by Fox's legal department, the series concerns a successful yet totally uptight lawyer whose nervous ...

Fox Developing Pot Legalization Movement Comedy From ‘Entourage’ Producers
Exclusive: The marijuana legalization movement gained major momentum in the recent November elections as measures to regulate the drug made it to the ballot in three Western states and passed in two — Colorado and Washington — with several others working on similar legislation. Now the grass-roots campaign is set as the backdrop for a comedy in development at Fox. The Happy Tree, from former Entourage executive producers Rob Weiss, Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson, centers on a brilliant young corporate attorney who, after a nervous breakdown, quits his job and seeks a life of peace and serenity on Venice Beach only to find himself the unlikely voice for the marijuana “legalize it” movement.
