At the edge of a long life shared, what is the final duty of love? Christiaan Olwagen’s film A Kind of Madness presents this question not as a whisper but as a defiant act. We meet Ellie and Dan, a couple whose half-century bond is fraying under the strain of her dementia. She resides within the sterile safety of a care facility, a place of quiet, managed decline.
He, undone by guilt and a love that refuses to yield to practicality, makes a decision. He takes her from the home. This act, a kidnapping in the eyes of the world, becomes their final, unsanctioned adventure. 10 Years Later, Community Star's Controversial Comedy Thrives on Streaming Despite Abysmal Rt Scores
Before the beloved sitcom Community, aired its final season, Alison Brie, who played Annie Edison, also starred in a controversial comedy: Get Hard. The comedy just recently hit Netflix, and it immediately became a hit.
Get Hard premiered in 2015, with comedy giants Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart in the lead. The comedy had Etan Cohen in his directorial debut, who co-wrote the script with Jay Martel and Ian Roberts. Get Hard was met with negative reviews, but it was a commercial hit, and its success continues on streaming 10 years later, per Tudum.
For the week between June 9 and June 15, Get Hard debuted in the global charts in sixth place. It received 4.4 million views, with 7.4 million hours viewed. The film's achievement was even more impressive, as all the views came from the U.S. Domestically, Get Hard was in fourth place behind Tyler Perry's Straw, Gerard Butler's Plane, and...

All seven of the Bring It On movies can be watched in release order or any order the audience chooses. The teen cheerleading comedy series began in 2000 with the release of the very first Bring It On movie, which was helmed by Ant-Man's Peyton Reed. The film follows high school cheer captain Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst) as she scrambles to come up with an original routine for her team the Toros to perform at a national competition after discovering her predecessor plagiarized choreography from rival squad, the East Compton Clovers, led by Gabrielle Union’s Isis.
Although Bring It On was initially dismissed as just another teen comedy, it’s become a cult classic in the years since, thanks to its exploration of race, class, and cultural appropriation through the lens of the wealthy, suburban, and predominantly white Toros, and the low-income, inner-city and predominantly Black East Compton Clovers. The...

After a fall-off in popularity (and quality) throughout much of the 1990s, teen-skewing comedies were suddenly all the rage in Hollywood again at the turn of the millennium. The "Pygmalion"-inspired "She's All That" kicked off the craze, which included such highs as "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Dick," and more lows than I care to remember. These films were quite clearly the offspring of John Hughes' 1980s classics, but they could rarely come close to the mix of insouciance and sentimentality that made his films snap. They also weren't very funny, which didn't help.
The best film of this brief renaissance by far was Peyton Reed's "Bring It On," which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2020. Working from a spiky-sexy-hilarious screenplay by Jessica Bendinger, Reed's movie kicks off with an exuberant opening cheer routine and never loses an ounce of zip on its way to a thrilling...

We spoke with comedic actor Thomas Lennon amid the release of Chosen Family, his new movie from writer-director Heather Graham who also leads the cast. Lennon steals his scenes as Matt, the hilarious but supportive friend of Ann (Graham), a single yoga instructor trying in vain to connect with her new boyfriend's devilish seven-year-old daughter. It's the latest laugh-out-loud project in a long line of similarly comedic ones from Lennon, whom Comedy Central fans might remember best from the acclaimed mockumentary series, Reno 911! And it sounds like another reunion between its beloved cast is not exactly out of the question down the line.
"I can't imagine we wouldn't do more Reno 911! because we already have all the outfits, which is basically the hardest part," Lennon told MovieWeb. "You can tell that we don't really overthink it when we do it. If anything, we really underthink it quite a bit." He...

The 2024 Mean Girls improves upon the original by offering a new updated ending, while still maintaining the focus on an unpopular high-schooler's struggles with popularity. Similar to Mean Girls, movies like Bring It On and She's All That tackle serious issues like race, class, and acceptance, while still being humorous and entertaining. The High School Musical franchise and Clueless share a stylistic approach with Mean Girls, blending comedy and Broadway musical elements to create memorable stories about navigating high school.
The 2024 Mean Girls is an adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the original 2004 movie of the same name, and the teen dramedy universe is rife with notable projects that share similarities with Mean Girls. While the 2024 Mean Girls' connection to the original Mean Girls is complicated, the common thread between the two movies is their focus on an unpopular high-schooler's struggles to integrate with the popular girls while...

British-Australian film director Tom Hooper's résumé is long and impressive. Since breaking into film and TV in the late 1990s, Hooper has bagged a startling number of accolades, including a Primetime Emmy for Elizabeth I (2005), a Golden Globe for his HBO miniseries on the famous American president, John Adams (2008); and an Academy Award and BAFTA for The King's Speech (2010).
And although, more recently, Hooper has made headlines for the wrong reasons – his work on the 2019 box office bomb Cats puts him alongside Kevin Costner as one of only two people to have won both an Oscar for Best Director and a Golden Raspberry for Worst Director – there's no denying his dedication to the craft.
But while mainstream audiences will be familiar with his work on Cats, The King's Speech, Les Misérables, and Michael Sheen's sports drama The Damned United (2009), Hooper's first movie is arguably his best. Red Dust (2004) was a taut,...

NBC recently axed the sitcom American Auto after two seasons, confirming that no third season is in development. The news was a bit of a surprise, as ratings were only slightly down compared to the first season, and the series has garnered that rare, coveted score of 100% on the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes. But the powers that be at NBC are changing some things up with the network's comedy offerings for the 2023-24 season, having recently ordered to series the workplace comedy St. Denis Medical from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer - who also created American Auto. Night Court and Lopez vs Lopez are also both returning for second seasons.
"I really loved this opportunity - everyone on the creative team, the writers, the crew and of course, the ensemble made magic. Lucky me," series star Ana Gasteyer wrote on Twitter in response to the news.

Singapore, Oct 2 (Ians) Mercedes Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has avoided a penalty for wearing his nose stud during the Singapore Grand Prix qualifying after he produced a medical exemption letter — although his team was fined 25,000 euros as they submitted a scrutineering form saying he wasn’t wearing any jewellery.
Hamilton, who finished a season’s best third in qualifying at Marina Bay on Saturday, had previously removed jewellery when driving after a long-standing rule that it could not be worn during track sessions was clarified in Miami, Florida, according to formula1.com.
However, he was wearing his nose stud in Singapore, which attracted the stewards’ attention.
The seven-time world champion told them doctors had advised him not to remove the stud, rather than continue to take it in and out, on medical grounds.
Fia deputy medical delegate Ian Roberts studied the medical report and concurred with the opinion. As a result,...

The vivid contrasts between the parched countryside of inland Australia and the throbbing lights and seductive beaches of Sydney echo the conflict playing out inside the head of the damaged protagonist in Lonesome. Writer-director Craig Boreham’s sexually explicit queer cowboy odyssey refuses to judge its corn-fed principal character, even as he blurs the line between desire and transaction, at his lowest point convincing himself that he deserves degradation, not love. At its most compelling, the film is an intimate study of emotionally scarred strangers who find communion through the flesh that opens a tentative window to their hearts.
If some of the acting is a bit stiff and the plotting becomes wayward — indulging in self-punishment clichés in a jarring late interlude by lurching into Bdsm territory with a disappointingly heavy hand — Lonesome is kept on track by the feeling invested in its troubled central love story.

The final curtain has come down on Upright Citizens Brigade’s Sunset Boulevard theater. The comedy troupe says the venue has been sold as the group has “been unable to make mortgage payments during this extended shutdown.”
News about the Ucb Theatre comes eight months after the troupe founded by Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh and others closed its New York venue. The group said on social media, however, that it is “still working to maintain Franklin [Avenue] space and look forward to being legally allowed to gather again.” Ucb notes that digital classes will continue.

Quibi has renewed its revival of “Reno 911!” for a second season, right as the first season on the short form content platform comes to an end.
The revival, which is produced by Comedy Central Productions, recently received a pair of Emmy noms in the short form categories, including an acting nod for co-creator Kerri Kenney-Silver, who plays Deputy Trudy Wiegel. Fellow co-creators Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon will be back to write and star in the new season.
“We are thrilled about the pick-up, but we’re even more thrilled about getting to leave our living rooms for the first time in 5 months,” said all three series co-creators in a statement.
They will be joined once more by Niecy Nash, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Cedric Yarbrough, and Carlos Alazraqui, who all starred in the original series.

The news about Jordan Peele raking in more money with the opening of his horror film Us, than any other 'original' horror movie in history was not being celebrated by the director over cappuccinos on the Universal lot while being showered with praise by now-richer studio execs. No, Jordan was on a small cramped stage at the legendary Upright Citizens Brigade improv facility in East Hollywood. It kinda makes sense, because Peele got his start in comedy. His improv skills allowed him to make the cut over at MadTV where he was regularly featured on the show. He graduated to doing his own very popular sketch show on Comedy Central, Key & Peele, then came the movie making.

Over at The Upright Citizens Brigade, they are having a "conversation series", which Jordan Peele took part in Monday night. The event was packed with a very diverse crowd of 20 something improv students,...

Fresh off a well-deserved, scare-the-money-out-your-pockets box office weekend for his horror film Us and a PaleyFest panel for his forthcoming revival of the iconic Twilight Zone, Jordan Peele scaled down the spectacle and participated in the Upright Citizens Brigade’s Q&A series in Los Angeles. In a conversation moderated by Ucb co-founder Ian Roberts in front of Ucb training center students, Peele talked about his career and his role as a black auteur in a renaissance for underrepresented voices in Hollywood.
Considering the audience was filled with Ucb improvisers and aspiring TV writers, producers and filmmakers, the majority of the conversation focused on Peele’s journey from aspiration to Sarah Lawrence College to Mad TV to Key & Peele to Get Out to Us. He even went into detail about the time he auditioned for Saturday Night Live during the 2008 writers strike with an impression of Barack Obama and then...

Starz has acquired a slew of comedy series, specials and films that launched on Seeso, the NBCUniversal-owned Svod service that shuttered last year.
Among the series in the deal are Take My Wife, Night Train with Wyatt Cenac and The Ucb Show. It also includes stand-up specials from the Sklar Brothers, Brian Posehn and Lachlan Patterson, along with The Pistol Shrimps, the documentary about a group of showbiz folks including Aubrey Plaza who play in a women’s recreational basketball league in L.A.
“We are excited to address the uncertain fate of several Seeso series, including the beloved Take My Wife series, by providing a new home for these programs and their fans at Starz,” said C. One of the biggest weekends in comedy got started in 1998 with a simple premise: Honor the complicated guru that championed a new art form and taught the improvisers who would become some of comedy’s biggest names in years to come.

Brian Huskey looks like the unassuming everyman. But that’s where his comedy lies.
Huskey, an original member of the Upright Citizens Brigade, has made a name for himself by playing average-looking guys with a dark core. That successful formula is on full display in “Mr. Neighbor’s House,” a twisted take on a children’s TV host that premieres Friday night on Adult Swim.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...
