Damnation Alley was set to be 1977's big sci-fi blockbuster before Star Wars changed the game, but its fortunes may have been different had the original casting plan worked out. George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope suffered through a troubled production, and hopes weren't high about its box office potential. Fox felt their adaptation of cult sci-fi novel Damnation Alley by author Roger Zelazny would be the big ticket of 1977, though it also ran into effects-related issues during post-production. This wasn't helped by the fact Fox had taken about a quarter of Damnation Alley's budget to cover cost overruns on Star Wars.
