One of the founding members of the American country music group Dixie Chicks, Laura Lynch, died in a car crash in West Texas on Friday evening (US Pacific Time), her cousin Michael Lynch told CBS News, according to ‘Variety’.

Lynch, the group’s bassist, shared lead vocal duties on the band now officially known as just The Chicks with co-founder Robin Lynn Macy until Macy’s departure in 1993, at which point she became the sole frontwoman. She was replaced by Natalie Maines in 1995.

Chicks members Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer (previously Erwin) issued a joint statement on Lynch’s death: “We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Laura Lynch, a founding member of The Chicks. The country trio announced a North American tour on Monday with over 40 dates planned for 2016, starting on June 1 at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Chicago — Women are preparing to rock this year's Lollapalooza music festival.

The more than two-decade-old festival opens Friday in Chicago's lakefront Grant Park with a strong female lineup, building on headlining appearances in recent years by Lady Gaga, Florence and the Machine and Neko Case.

Lana Del Rey and Cat Power will each close one of Lollapalooza's eight stages over the three-day event this year. Rapper Azealia Banks was scheduled to close a stage, too, but she canceled her appearance on Thursday. Women factor into more than 20 percent of acts scheduled to perform.

Sara Quin, of festival mainstays Tegan and Sara, says the Lollapalooza lineup reflects a growing diversity at festivals.

Austin, Texas — Natalie Maines is starting out nervous on stage, almost 10 years to the day that the Dixie Chicks spitfire slammed then-President George W. Bush and forever changed the fate and fortunes of the country superstars.

On this night she barely speaks between songs.

Her hair slicks up in a punkish pompadour. She looks slimmer than when the Dixie Chicks began a hiatus in 2007 that may never end. The crowd at the South by Southwest music festival to hear Maines perform her solo debut "Mother" for only the second time is a healthy size, but it is also far from a packed house.

"We missed you, Natalie!" one fan hollers.

Maines smiles but doesn't banter back.

"I ask myself, `Why is that? What are you doing, girl?'" Maines told The Associated Press the next morning at a downtown Austin hotel. "I think right now I have so much to remember.

The Dixie Chicks are reuniting for a one-off performance at a Canadian music festival. Natalie Maines, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire will appear as the headlining act for July 2013's Craven Country Jamboree. They will be replacing Lady Antebellum, who bowed out after singer Hillary Scott found out that she is pregnant. Emily Robison welcomed her fourth child, Violet Isabel Strayer, on Tuesday, Sept. 4, her rep confirms to People exclusively.

Violet, who is the first child together for the Dixie Chicks and Court Yard Hounds musician and boyfriend Martin Strayer, arrived at 3:01 a.m. weighing in at 8.5 lbs.

“Mom and baby Violet are doing well and Dad couldn’t be happier,” her rep tells People.

Emily Robison is expecting her fourth child, a rep for the musician confirms.

“She’s excited!” the rep tells People, adding that the baby is due in early September.

This will be the Dixie Chicks and Court Yard Hounds singer’s first child with boyfriend Martin Strayer; Robison, 39, is also mom to twins Juliana Tex and Henry Benjamin, 7, and son Charles Augustus, 9½, with ex-husband Charlie Robison.

Bandmates Natalie Maines and Martie Maguire are mothers as well; Maines has two sons while Maguire has three daughters.
