Hellish Hags and Grisly Grandmas: Six Modern Horror Films Featuring Dangerous Older Women
Image
We’re accustomed to viewing the elderly as kind and benevolent. Perhaps they’re our diminutive granny still married to her landline or our chatty great aunt who’s obsessed with her garden. We make duty calls on Sundays and trust them to safeguard family traditions. They are pleasant, benign, and ultimately absent from the day to day bustle of everyday life.

But the horror genre knows better with sinister octogenarians hiding in plain sight. They may fool us with quaint sayings, rambling stories, and a slightly vacant smile, but they’re often just as devious as women half their age.

Karl R. Hearne’s The G. follows an extremely dangerous older lady. Nicknamed “The G,” Ann Hunter (Dale Dickey) may seem feeble and frail, but when she’s forced into elder care by a devious thief, she has no problem taking justice into her own gnarled hands. Dickey stuns...

6 Mental Health Monster Movies to Double Feature with ‘The Killgrin’
Image
There’s a popular theory about how nightmares may have evolved as a natural form of exposure therapy where our brains simulate encounters with our deepest fears in order to better prepare us for the horrors of the waking world. Funnily enough, psychologists claim that consuming horror media can have the same cathartic effects in real life, which is likely the reason why we see so many scary movies incorporate relatable horrors into their stories – horrors like the suffering that can arise from living with a mental illness.

And in honor of Joanna Tsanis’ The Killgrin personifying mental anguish as a literal monster that feeds off of its victims’ misery, we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six Mental Health Monster Movies. After all, the horror genre has a long and celebrated history of crafting memorable antagonists inspired by the darkest recesses of the human mind.

For the purposes of this list,...

Samara Weaving at an event for The Oscars (2018)

Samara Weaving, who played Grace in the 2019 horror film Ready or Not, is eager to reprise her role in a potential sequel. Talks of a follow-up film coming to fruition picked up steam in April when the film's directors, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, revealed a script existed. Directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin hint at a potential Ready or Not sequel with an exciting script in place. The duo express enthusiasm for the "absolute f-cking banger" of a sequel script, teasing fans of what's to come. Despite initial doubts, the filmmakers are proud of the story left to tell and are hopeful that the sequel will come to fruition.

There's been plenty of speculation (and hope) for a Ready or Not sequel. While directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin can't officially announce that a follow-up film is in the works, they've revealed a script exists. Just last month, reports circulated that a sequel was in development with Samara Weaving returning and a new director, Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan) attached. If Robitel is to take over at the helm, it's unclear how Gillet and Bettinelli-Olpin would be tied to the project, but their enthusiasm for...

Radio Silence directing team, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, finally broke their silence regarding Ready or Not 2, confirming that they’re indeed developing the sequel to 2019’s Samara Weaving-led horror comedy. During the original’s theatrical run, it garnered a gross of over $57 million at the global box office against a reported budget of $6 million.

While promoting their latest horror movie Abigail, Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin were asked about Ready or Not 2, after the previous report didn’t mention their involvement. Speaking with EW, the filmmaking duo clarified that they’re indeed part of the creative team working on the sequel. Filmmaking collective Radio Silence says a script for Ready Or Not 2 has been written, and that it’s “an absolute f—ing banger.”

Confirming an earlier rumour that a sequel to 2019’s Ready Or Not is in development, the filmmakers collectively known as Radio Silence have said that a script has already been written. They also add that the screenplay is rather good – or a “an absolute f—ing banger of a sequel,” to quote one of them directly.

We’re guessing the censored bit was ‘flaming’ or perhaps ‘flipping’.

Ready or Not 2 will be an “absolute f***ing banger,” teases Radio Silence

Ready Or Not 2 | Samara Weaving expected to return for horror sequel
Samara Weaving at an event for The Oscars (2018)
Ready Or Not 2 is reportedly in the works with Samara Weaving returning to reprise her role from the first film.

2019’s Ready Or Not was one of the best horror films we’ve had in the last five years. It was fun, had some great kills and a killer plot with an ending for the ages.

The film followed Samara Weaving’s Grace as she marries her dream guy, Alex, whose family owns a successful board game company. On her wedding night, Grace finds herself as the victim of a particularly cruel game that the family plays.

Industry insider Jeff Sneider reports in his newsletter (via the lovely folks at Bloody Disgusting) that a sequel to the hit film is now in the works. Weaving is expected to return to play Grace once again, but the project is still in the early stages of development so not much else is known at this time.

According to The InSneider, lead star Samara Weaving is expected to reprise her memorable role as Grace in Ready or Not 2, which is currently in development. So far, Robitel’s directing credits have only consisted of horror movies, including 2014’s The Taking of Deborah Logan and Sony’s Escape Room movies.

We have the 2019 hit Ready or Not to thank for landing directors Radio Silence the keys to the Scream franchise, the film released into theaters in August 2019 and scaring up $57.6 million at the worldwide box office. Ready or Not 2 finds a director in Escape Room’s Adam Robitel
Image
Ready or Not was a deliciously twisted play on the concept of meeting the family of one’s fiancée. Samara Waving plays a young woman who is invited on the night of her wedding by her new husband’s rich, eccentric family to participate in a time-honored tradition that turns into a lethal game with everyone fighting for their survival. The horror comedy also starred Adam Brody, Mark O’Brien, Elyse Levesque, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell and was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who have gone on to direct Scream (2022) and Scream VI.

Ready or Not was written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. However, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are currently involved with a new Universal Monsters project, so they will not be returning for Ready or Not 2. Instead, ComingSoon.net reports that Escape Room director Adam Robitel will be taking the reins for the sequel. The scoop comes from industry source,...

5 Unconventional Demonic Possession Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
At its most basic, possession horror exploits the primal fear of losing control over your own person, usually due to a demonic entity. Victims in a possession movie are rendered mere passengers in their bodies as a sinister force takes over and destroys them from the inside. That potent combination of body horror and a complete lack of free will makes for inherently terrifying and fertile ground for exploration. While possession horror is often tied to biblical battles of good versus evil, that’s not always the case.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to demonic possession horror titles that leave conventional depictions of faith and exorcisms behind for new terrain and metaphors.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Possession horror tends to take the possession seriously, opting for full-throttle scares and intense emotional or faith-related stakes.

These titles share the core themes of the holiday, either through the rituals of preparing meals or a sense of family togetherness through survival, even if they’re not always actually set on Thanksgiving.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

The Taking Of Deborah Logan Ending Explained
Image
The ending of "The Taking of Deborah Logan" reveals that Deborah has been possessed by a spirit in need of a fifth virgin sacrifice for immortality. Sarah, Mia, and Luis track Deborah and the kidnapped girl to the caves where the other girls were murdered, and Sarah successfully stops Deborah from killing the girl. The ending intertwines the supernatural with the emotional impact of Alzheimer's, portraying the pain, guilt, and helplessness experienced by relatives of those affected by the disease.

Adam Robitel's possession thriller, The Taking of Deborah Logan, is one of the more thoughtful films within the horror genre with a terrifying climax, leading to a need to have The Taking of Deborah Logan ending explained. The plot involves a documentary crew studying Deborah, the former owner of a telephone operating service, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Though reluctant to expose herself to a group of strangers,...

2001 Maniacs (2005) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering 2001 Maniacs was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Robert Englund doing a demented Colonel Sanders impression. Lin Shaye putting on a deadly song and dance routine. Enough politically incorrect elements to offend pretty much everybody. Buckets of gore. Gratuitous nudity. And a cameo appearance by Eli Roth, playing his Cabin Fever character. Put all of this together and you get 2001 Maniacs (watch it Here). The director calls it a “splatstick” movie. Splatter combined with slapstick comedy. We call it The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.

Herschell Gordon Lewis was a classy guy, but he specialized in making movies that were not classy. His aim was to give the grindhouse and drive-in crowds the things Hollywood wasn’t giving them. Noting...

Escape Room Ending, Explained
Image
In 2019, Adam Robitel made Escape Room, but it wasn't actually his debut. His The Taking of Deborah Logan is a fantastic horror feature that has all the drive of a first-time director who knows what to tackle and what to leave out for accomplishing a solid modern horror film.

A couple of participations in franchises let him know what was about, and then he got commissioned to direct a gimmicky horror film that would give fans a taste of what the Saw films were like in the 2000s. However, Robitel made his own thing: a very good horror thriller that uses gimmicks to entertain, of course, but he also made sure to include a compelling set of characters based on a plot that demanded depth from them.

Needless to say, Escape Room was a very successful microbudget horror film that smells of Blum but has no relation whatsoever to the producer.

The Many Queer Readings of Norman Bates in ‘Psycho’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Rose Byrne in Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)
Baters

It’s nearly time to close out the month of July, which has been another scorching hot one for Trace and me. We kicked things off with Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) to coincide with our coverage of The Red Door, then we talked about another sequel to celebrate the two-year anniversary of Adam Robitel’s Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2021).

Now we’re up to a huge milestone: Alfred Hitchcock‘s Psycho (1960) aka one of the original slasher prototypes. In the iconic film, Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) steals $40K from her crappy job before stopping at the abandoned Bates Motel. There she meets young proprietor Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) who seems a little…off.

Unfortunately for Marion, soon afterward she’s brutally murdered in the shower by Mother, setting off a chain reaction as first private investigator Arbogast (Martin Balsam), then Marion’s lover Sam Loomis (John Gavin) and her...

Dissecting Two Very Different Films With ‘Escape Room: Tournament of Champions’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Adam Robitel
Physical Media 4Eva

After tackling a contemporary sequel last week with Insidious: Chapter Two, Trace and I figured we should do it again. This week we’re dissecting the sequel to queer director Adam Robitel‘s immensely popular Escape Room, which was released in 2021 as Escape Room: Tournament of Champions.

In the film, survivors Zoey (Taylor Russell) and Ben (Logan Miller) return to New York in an attempt to discover the secrets behind the mysterious Minos Corporation. Instead, they’re lured back into the game with a fresh batch of survivors, including “pain freak” Rachel (Holland Roden), influencer Brianna (Indya Moore), and alcoholic priest Nathan (Thomas Cocquerel).

What Zoey and Ben don’t know is that someone is pulling their strings by creating a very unique new killer escape room experience. Depending on which version of the film you watch, the secret game master is either <spoilers> Amanda (Deborah Ann Woll...

The Boulet Bros. Chime in On ‘Insidious: Chapter 2’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
James Wan
Cisgusting.

We spent June discussing genderfluid dinosaurs, evil weaves and queer-coded hitchhikers, and we’re kicking off July with a discussion of the Sleepaway Camp of it all in James Wan‘s 2013 sequel Insidious: Chapter 2.

Insidious: Chapter 2 sees Renai (Rose Byrne) and Josh (Patrick Wilson) Lambert recovering from their showdown with evil spirits that possessed their son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) and are ready for their lives to return to normal. However, something still is off with Josh, who — unbeknown to Renai — is possessed by the mysterious entity that followed him out of the Further at the end of the first film. In order to free Josh’s soul and finally defeat the malevolent forces around them, Lorraine Lambert (Barbara Hershey) and her ghost-hunting friends investigate the past to save her family’s future.

'Insidious' Franchise Explained: Every Film, Spinoff, and More
Image
Dating back to 2010, the Insidious franchise has been horrifying and haunting fans with four feature films and a fifth installment coming out July 7. Created by Leigh Whannell, who also wrote films such as Saw and Dead Silence, the first two films were directed by James Wan (Malevolent), with the third directed by Whannell and the fourth by Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan). Patrick Wilson will direct the latest installment of the franchise. “Insidious,” by definition, means “proceeding in a gradual, subtle way, but with harmful effects,” which is precisely the perfect reason to name the franchise, as the demonic entities slowly encroach on the lives of the living throughout each movie.

"It's Not A Big Heartbreak": Escape Room 2's Cut Storyline Addressed By Sequel Actor
Image
With a couple of years now gone since she landed on the cutting room floor, Isabelle Fuhrman is reflecting on her scrapped Escape Room: Tournament of Champions storyline. The 2021 horror-thriller acted as a sequel to the surprise 2019 box office smash, continuing the story of Taylor Russell's Zoey and Logan Miller's Ben as they try to confront the organization behind the deadly games of the first movie, only to wind up in a new series of traps. The movie scored similarly mixed reviews from critics as its predecessor, while seeing a step down in its box office returns.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant for her action-comedy Sheroes, Isabelle Fuhrman opened up about her cut Escape Room: Tournament of Champions storyline. The horror genre vet had a brighter response than some might expect, assuring that there was proper communication between her and director Adam Robitel about the change and...

As broken by Deadline, Moore and Nanjiani have closed deals to star in Thread: An Insidious Tale. Jeremy Slater -- the creator and head writer of Marvel Studios' Moon Knight series on Disney+ -- is attached to write and direct the upcoming horror film. Thread comes from Screen Gems and Blumhouse, with original Insidious director James Wan also producing through his Atomic Monster banner.

Mandy Moore
Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani are set to star in Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster’s “Thread: An Insidious Tale” for Screen Gems, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.

“Moon Knight” filmmaker Jeremy Slater is set to direct.

The plot is being kept under wraps, but, according to Deadline, which first reported the news, “Thread,” the sixth installment in the “Insidious” horror franchise, explores the experiences of ordinary individuals who find themselves entangled with demonic entities. However, it is not a direct continuation of the current series but rather an offshoot project.

In the film, Moore and Nanjiani portray a married couple who use a spell to go back in time and save their daughter from dying. However, their actions lead to severe consequences.

Insidious: The Red Door Trailer Teases the Final Trip to ‘The Further’
Image
The fifth and apparently final film of the Insidious franchise marks the feature directorial debut of franchise star Patrick Wilson. Insidious: The Red Door welcomes back Wilson and Rose Byrne, and the trailer promises this final chapter of the horror film saga will send the Lamberts back into The Further to deal with their demons one last time.

Directed by James Wan from a screenplay by Leigh Whannell, the original Insidious opened in theaters in April 2011 and introduced Wilson, Byrne, Ty Simpkins, and Andrew Astor as a family who encountered terrifying demons. Insidious: Chapter 2 followed in September 2013 with Wan directing and Wilson, Bryne, Simpkins, and Astor returning to star.

Leigh Whannell took over as director for Insidious: Chapter 3, a prequel (without the Lambert family) that opened in theaters in June 2015. And Insidious: The Last Key arrived in January 2018 with The Taking director Adam Robitel at the helm.

The Best Movies Studios Dumped in January
Image
This article contains mild spoilers

Ah, January. A fresh year, a chance to start again, with resolutions restored and hope renewed everywhere! Well, almost everywhere. If you go to the theater, you’ll likely find holdovers and awards favorites released in the final months of the previous year; the respectable stuff that does well around Oscar season. But the new offerings tend to be pretty dire. That’s when studios release dreck like the re-Heated Pacino/De Niro team-up Righteous Kill or dorm room staple The Boondock Saints. As the fine folks at Red Letter Media so eloquently point out, January is the worst time of the year for new movies.

But to the surprise of no one, studios aren’t always right about the quality of their movies, and sometimes a real classic ends up getting a January release. In fact, when you look over the past four decades,...

Insidious Movies In Order
If you’re looking for a fright-filled marathon this weekend, look no further than the Insidious movies.

If you’re a fan of horror movies, then you’ve probably heard of the Insidious franchise. The four films in the series are all connected, and they tell a chilling story of ghosts, demonic possession, and hauntings.

Whether you’re revisiting the Insidious films or watching them for the first time, there are two options for the viewing order: following the exact release dates or allowing the narrative to unfold chronologically.

You can’t go wrong with either option; however, a chronological viewing may be more appealing if you want to learn all prequel backstories before getting involved with the characters. The story of the franchise revolves around the lambert family and Elise Rainier, who help the family try to get away from the evil spirits in the house.

We’ll give...
