Review: "Jaws" Blu-ray Special Edition
SL500_AA300.jpg" alt="Jaws (Universal 100th Anniversary) [Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet]" />

By Todd Garbarini

All good things come to those who wait. That being said the reason why Blu-ray was invented is finally here. Steven Spielberg's Jaws, arguably the first and the greatest summer movie ever made, in addition to being one of the best American films of all-time, has been given a complete digital 4K restoration derived from the original camera negative. The results are magnificent. A far cry from the McA DiscoVision laser disc, the Capacitance Electronic Disc (Ced) by RCA, the VHS tape, the 20th anniversary letterboxed laser disc, or even the past two previous DVD incarnations (which were admittedly pretty decent), the new Blu-ray most closely approximates what it was like to see Jaws for the first time in movie theaters in the summer of 1975. Best of all, the Blu-ray cover retains artist Roger Kastel’s iconic poster art.

'The Shark is Still Working': The story behind the great doc on the new 'Jaws' Blu-ray -- Exclusive Video
Susan Backlinie and Bruce in Jaws (1975)
J. Michael Roddy was only six years old in the summer of 1975, but like the rest of the country, he developed shark fever after seeing Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. “There are two things that are really cool to a six year old boy, and that’s dinosaurs and sharks,” says Roddy. “I begged my parents to let me see Jaws, and it was the first time I remember being completely lost in a film. It changed my life.”

Roddy isn’t alone. Jaws changed a lot of people’s lives, beginning with the then 28-year-old Spielberg himself. But in The Shark is Still Working,...

Shark Week!!! Shark Week!!! Shark Week!!!
August 1-8, the Alamo is presenting a series of shark-related films that will get you out of the water and into a movie.

Every year, a certain nerdy TV channel stops airing clips of lions making love and boosts its ratings by devoting every moment of seven glorious days to nature’s rudest fish. The shark is like the Superfly of the sea, and the species’ amazing feats are as hypnotizing as they are horrifying. A couple of months ago we were talking about the sharkiest movies ever and we decided we should have our own Shark Week and to hell with everybody else.

On their Shark Week no one leaves the house. Everyone is glued to their sets, watching those damn teeth regenerate and those fins squirm. Well, not ours! We’re going to have a little fun this year, in what promises to be the first annual Shark Week at the Alamo.

The original Psycho will be 50 years old next year. It was directed by Alfred Hitchcock from a script by Joseph Stefano based on the novel by Robert Bloch. The film helped to make a star of Anthony Perkins, who played the murderous Norman Bates. Psycho became notorious for a scene in which the character of Marion Crane (played by Janet Leigh) is knifed in the shower. It is also remembered for the iconic image of the Bates Motel.

Psycho spawned two theatrical sequels, Psycho II in 1983 and Psycho III in 1986, as well as a fourth made-for-television prequel, Psycho IV: The Beginning...

'The Shark is Still Working'
Anyone familiar with the making of Steven Spielberg's classic film Jaws will know that there were times when the making of the movie was a nightmare for everyone on set. In hindsight, though, it was definitely worth the trouble because of the influence the film has had and the devotion shown by its many fans.

None of those fans can be more devoted that the makers of The Shark is Still Working (Tsisw). Tsisw is an independently-made documentary that oozes adoration for Jaws. Nonetheless, it manages to be nautical miles better than many making-of features Hollywood puts out as glorified advertising for its products. It was produced by uber-Jaws fans James Gelet (Grizzly Park, The Marks of a Cult: A Biblical Analysis), Jake Gove (webmaster of JAWSmovie.com), J. Michael Roddy (The Psycho Legacy), and director and  Jaws prop collector Erik Hollander (Grizzly Park). The appreciation these people...
