We Were Liars: Are The Dogs Dead? Did Harris Adopt Three Puppies?
Image
It is always the innocent who lose the most when it comes to feuding and war. In We Were Liars, the two golden retrievers, Franklin and Eleanor, play a significant role in Cady’s trauma, because she forgot about them and let them die in the fire, too. The dogs play an important role in the Sinclair household. They’re a symbol of status, they’re beautiful, and they’re also “golden” (can be considered a part of the “blonde” heritage of the family) and somewhat controllable with the pills, you know? Dogs have always been companions; they’re meant to be loyal and unconditional in their love for their owners. I suppose Harris is quite fond of the two goldens, and this is very clearly seen when he’s holding the ball at the end of the show, when there are no dogs to play with it. While these...

Walk on the wild side: Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs on their epic hiking movie The Salt Path
Gillian Anderson
Raynor Winn’s bestselling memoir about her and her husband’s 630-mile trek around England’s south coast has become a film. Its stars, makers and Winn talk floods, fog and forgiveness

‘I have played a lot of powerful, well-dressed women in my career,” says Gillian Anderson. They flash before your eyes: Margaret Thatcher (The Crown), Eleanor Roosevelt (The First Lady), Emily Maitlis (the Prince Andrew/Newsnight drama Scoop) – as well as the formidable sex therapist in the Netflix hit Sex Education, a role that led to her being inundated with dildos from over-enthusiastic fans. “These are all women in control of themselves and their environment. Any time I have an opportunity to steer against that, particularly lately, it’s of interest to me.”

There is steering in another direction, and then there is the screeching handbrake turn represented by her role in The Salt Path, adapted from Raynor Winn...

Here’s Which Marx Brother Might Have Had Sex With Amelia Earhart
Image
In the annals of American history, there are few figures as heroic and determined as Amelia Earhart. In the 1920s and 1930s, she defied highly restrictive gender norms to set a multitude of aviation records, including becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, the first woman to fly solo nonstop from coast-to-coast and the first person to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean.

There is, however, one conquest that you likely won’t find in any of the countless aviation museums that honor her memory: She very possibly had sex with one of the Marx Brothers.

For those who may need a refresher, the Marx Brothers were one of the most important acts in the history of comedy. They starred in more thn a dozen films spanning the 1930s and 1940s, and also saw significant achievements on stage, radio and television. The best known of which...

Vince Vaughn Is Cooking Up Comedy With Susan Sarandon & Lorraine Bracco in First 'Nonnas' Trailer
Image
Netflix is serving up a new trailer for their culinary comedy Nonnas. Vince Vaughn stars as an aspiring restauranteur who recruits the neighborhood nonnas (grandmothers) to staff his kitchen. The film, which is based on the real-life story of Joe Scaravella, will premiere on the streamer on May 9, 2025.

In the trailer, Vaughn plays Scaravella, an Mta employee grieving the loss of his mother. While looking through her recipes, he comes up with the idea of honoring her memory by opening his own Italian restaurant, and hiring elderly women with decades of home-cooking experience to staff it. Bruno (Joe Manganiello) thinks he's crazy, but is he? To the strains of Billy Joel's "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant," we see him struggling with kitchen fires, staff disputes, and some internecine conflict from the titular nonnas, including Susan Sarandon(Bull Durham), Lorraine Bracco(Goodfellas), Talia Shire (Rocky), and Brenda Vaccaro (Midnight Cowboy...

May Days: Baier’s Broad Commentary on a Revolutionary Footnote

“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people,” said Eleanor Roosevelt. Dipping its irreverent toes into each of these camps is The Safe House, the latest film from Swiss director Lionel Baier, adapted from the novel by Christophe Boltanski. And Baier most assuredly wants the audience to recognize the origins of the source material, with narration often breaking the fourth wall to remind us we are watching the reenactment of a publication, arguably docu-fiction, which presents a curious event which transpired at the home of a quirky artistic family during the civil unrest of May, 1968.…...

The True Story Behind Netflix's The Six Triple Eight Explained
Image
20 years ago, Tyler Perry caught Hollywood completely by surprise when his low-budget romantic comedy "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" opened to $22 million at the U.S. box office. Though critics savaged the film, it received a sterling A+ CinemaScore from audience exit polls, thus indicating that Perry knew precisely what this underserved segment of African-American moviegoers were desperately craving. After this stunning success, Perry was off to the races, churning out at least one movie per year -- a pace that's even more amazing when you factor in the myriad of television series he began producing in 2007. Tyler Perry, whose base of operations is an Atlanta studio that bears his name, is a one-man entertainment industry.

While Perry seems untroubled by his continued lack of critical acclaim, he has on occasion attempted to mount a prestige film with the kind of socially important pedigree that goes down well with Academy Awards voters.

Remembering the forgotten heroes in Netflix’s 'The Six Triple Eight'
Image
The Six Triple Eight delivers the quality and emotion that is expected of a Tyler Perry story. It touches upon the forgotten accomplishments of the unsung heroes of the 6888th Battalion of the Women’s Army Corps - the first of its kind to ever serve overseas. The movie is all about these women who were brought together to organize the delivery of thousands upon thousands of untouched mail and parcels of soldiers and their families from home during the Great War.

Witness the replay of history where 855 black women come together as they overcome unwarranted racism, obstruction, and vilification. All the while, their service brings relief to thousands of households in the US as they await their beloveds who are sacrificing their lives on the other side of the Atlantic.

The Diary of a Mad Black Woman actor (and here director) brought together a perfectly balanced ensemble of actors to tell us his narrative.

10 Best Movies Like The Six Triple Eight
Image
The Six Triple Eight is about some of the unsung heroes of WWII, and shows how a battalion of Black women sorted and sent over 17 million pieces of valuable mail to soldiers and their loved ones. The Six Triple Eight is based on a true story and focuses on the women working together to achieve this seemingly impossible result while contending with both racism and sexism. The movie is one of the few war dramas with strong female leads, and although it received mixed reviews from critics, it was considerably better received by its audience.

The Six Triple Eight features a standout performance by Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams and cameos by Oprah Winfrey and Susan Sarandon, who plays Eleanor Roosevelt. While the story is a dramatized version of the real historical events, The Six Triple Eight's focus on Black women has drawn praise for highlighting the achievements...

10 Best Movies Starring The Cast Of The Six Triple Eight

Netflix's The Six Triple Eight has an impressive cast who have starred in a wide range of acclaimed movies. The Tyler Perry-directed Netflix movie tells the story of the 6888th Battalion, the only all-female and all-Black unit to serve overseas during World War II. They achieved the incredible task of sorting through 17 million pieces of backlogged mail in less than 90 days, thus reopening lines of communication, and boosting morale. The Six Triple Eight's cast is led by Kerry Washington, who plays Majority Charity Adams, the commanding officer of the 6888th Battalion.

Other key figures from The Six Triple Eight's true story include the 6888th Battalion's Lena Derriecott, played by Ebony Obsidian, with the movie following her journey before joining the unit, along with her life during and after her service. Tyler Perry’s Trending New Netflix WWII Movie Is A Great Reminder To Watch Oscar-Nominated $236M Cold War Biopic From 8 Years Ago
Image
The Six Triple Eight is about the previously overlooked accomplishments of a team of Black women, and it's a great reminder to watch a similar Oscar-nominated movie. The Six Triple Eight follows the women's battalion unofficially charged with sorting and delivering over 17 million pieces of undelivered mail to soldiers and their loved ones during WWII. Many of the greatest war movies of all time focus on the action on the front lines, but there are many excellent films about other lesser-known efforts. The Six Triple Eight is based on a true story with assistance from the real women involved.

The Six Triple Eight stars Kerry Washington and Ebony Obsidian, with Susan Sarandon briefly appearing as Eleanor Roosevelt. The ending of The Six Triple Eight took some historical liberties but credited each woman involved, including featuring one of the characters' real-life counterparts. 10 Most Disturbing Unsubs In Criminal Minds
Image
This article contains mentions of murder, sexual assault, and other horrific crimes.

Years after its original series finale, Criminal Minds remains at the forefront of the crime procedural genre. The show is arguably the most popular episodic police drama in modern history, with hordes of viewers constantly seeking new alternatives to Criminal Minds. Though Criminal Minds: Evolution is already on season 3, the original series lingers as the gold standard to compare it against. From the unforgettable cast to the unsettling cases, Criminal Minds captured something magical that can’t be easily replicated.

Over the 15 seasons of Criminal Minds, the most iconic, and perhaps infamous, part of the show was the “unsub” (or “Unknown Subject”). Each episode began by displaying the unsub’s modus operandi as they claimed their newest victim, setting the stage for the rest of the story. The original series had over 300 episodes and over 300 unsubs to boot,...

The Six Triple Eight is a film we should all watch and learn from
Image
A new release this month on Netflix has been getting mixed reviews but it’s one we should all watch. That’s despite our rating the movie as one to miss when we gave you the three best new Netflix movies to watch (and two to skip) in December 2024. As a spoiler, the reason we used to skip The Six Triple Eight wasn’t that it’s not a good movie, it was more about the late December timing of the release.

The Six Triple Eight was released in selected cinemas in early December and became available on Netflix on Friday, December 20. It has a strong cast and relates an important story set in World War II. That's part of the reason why it should be a must-watch.

Before I explain more about why, let’s get back to that strong cast. You’ll see some top stars, including Oprah Winfrey,...

The True Story Being The Six Triple Eight's All-Black & All-Female WW2 Battalion
Image
Netflix's new WWII drama The Six Triple Eight is based on the real-life exploits of the all-black, all-women 6888th Battalion, which reopened lines of communication between the front lines and the home front during the latter stages of the war. Written and directed by Tyler Perry, The Six Triple Eight dramatizes some of the more intimate moments of the narrative, but by and large stays faithful to reality when exploring the adversity faced by the Battalion and its leader, Major Charity Adams, played by Kerry Washington.

Technically, The Six Triple Eight was inspired by a WWII History magazine article by Kevin M. Hymel, which itself went into detail about the contributions made by the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion of the Women's Army Corps. As depicted in the movie, the courageous real-life members of the Battalion served in a full military capacity, and exceeded expectations all in the face of incessant doubt and discrimination.

The Six Triple Eight (2024) Movie Review & Ending Explained: How Did the Battalion Finally Gain the Recognition They Deserved?
Tyler Perry at an event for Madea's Big Happy Family (2011)
Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight” (2024) is a biopic dramatization of the American 6888th Battalion. They were the only Women’s army corps of color that served during the Second World War. Their extraordinary service has gone unremarked, just as they had been during their lifetimes. The film commemorates their tireless commitment to duty in the face of constant denigration and mockery, never letting it dent their spirit.

The Six Triple Eight (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis: Love and Loss Amidst the Flames of War

The film opens on the Italian battlefield in December of 1943. It begins with death. There’s commotion and disarray. Quickly, we are shifted away from the battlefield chaos to the hush-hush blossoming of romance between Lena (Ebony Obsidian) and Abram (Gregg Sulkin). However, they are an interracial couple, him being a Jew and her a Black woman. It is the 1940s and their relationship wouldn...

‘The Six Triple Eight’ Review: Tyler Perry’s Inspiring World War II Postal Drama (Mostly) Delivers
Image
Movies have been telling stories about World War II since before some history books say World War II even started. What’s more, we’ve never stopped, not for one solitary second. That’s partly because it was arguably the most important historical event in the last 100 years. It’s also because we really, really need to explain to new generations why we should never, ever let fascists rule a country ever again.

But it’s also because there are still, to this day, real stories from WWII that have not been properly told. In some cases, like this year’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” it’s because the information was only recently declassified. In others, like Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight,” it’s because heroic tales of Black soldiers were swept under the rug by racist a-holes who either minimized or completely ignored their rightful place in history.

‘The Six Triple Eight’ True Story & Major Differences From Real-Life Events
Image
Based on the article Fighting a Two-Front War by Kevin Hymel, Netflix’s The Six Triple Eight tells the story of the first all-Black female Women Army Auxiliary Corps (Wac) that served in World War II overseas. Though the film is based on true events, it seems like writer and director Tyler Perry has taken a lot of creative liberties and changed certain events in order to dramatize the narrative and make the storyline more gripping.

McLeod’s True Contribution Towards Her Community

At the beginning of the film, Mary McLeod Bethune, the civil rights activist, sat in a meeting with President Roosevelt, his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, General Halt, and a few other personnel from the army. We saw that she vouched for the African American battalion and advised the army personnel to bring them to the forefront so that they could contribute to the war. Firstly, it is to...

The Six Triple Eight Cast & Real-Life Character Guide
Image
Tyler Perry's World War II historical drama The Six Triple Eight features an all-star cast of Black actors who brought a remarkable true story to life. The Six Triple Eight follows the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only predominantly Black battalion of the Women's Army Corps that served overseas in World War II. The 6888th served primarily in England and France sorting mail that had been neglected in the fray of the war. The battalion was faced with thousands of letters that needed sorting and delivering, and they finished their task in half the time they were allotted, just three months.

The Six Triple Eight makes a strong case to be considered one of Tyler Perry's best non-Madea movies, and it's largely because of its talented cast. With stars like Kerry Washington and Ebony Obsidian heading up the ensemble cast, The Six Triple Eight is well-equipped to handle...

‘The Six Triple Eight’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Did The Battalion Get The Recognition?
Image
Tyler Perry’s war drama film, Six Triple Eight is based on the American 6888th Battalion—the only Women’s Army Corps unit of color that served during World War II. The Six Triple Eight has the potential to intrigue the audience to learn more about this important chapter in history, but as a creative endeavor, it fails to leave a mark. Even though it was supposed to be a story of how women of color, particularly Black women in the Women’s Army Corps, showed resilience in the way they handled racism and sexism to deliver on the job they were assigned, it felt more like an undercooked love story. Loosely centered around the lives of real war heroes, The Six Triple Eight is a decent introduction to their struggles, but it fails to leave an impact.

“The Six Triple Eight”: The Forgotten Heroines of World War II
Kerry Washington, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Pepi Sonuga, Sarah Jeffery, Ebony Obsidian, and Shanice Shantay in The Six Triple Eight (2024)
“The Six Triple Eight” is a war movie directed by Tyler Perry starring Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, and Dean Norris.

Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight” attempts to shed light on a little-known chapter of American military history. The film centers on the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve overseas during World War II.

Set against the backdrop of a war-torn nation, the movie follows 855 African American women tasked with clearing a three-year backlog of 17 million letters destined for U.S. soldiers. Led by Major Charity Adams, portrayed by Kerry Washington, the battalion completes its mission in record time, ostensibly boosting troop morale.

The cast boasts notable names, including Oprah Winfrey as Mary McLeod Bethune, Susan Sarandon as Eleanor Roosevelt, and Sam Waterston as President Franklin D. Roosevelt. While the performances are competent, they struggle to elevate characters that often feel generic and underdeveloped.

‘The Six Triple Eight’ Review: A Battalion of Black Women Makes History in Tyler Perry’s Best Film Yet
Image
Tyler Perry has dedicated the past quarter-century of his career to giving voice to Black women on stage and screen. With “The Six Triple Eight,” the self-made mogul — who leveraged his success to build a production studio on a former U.S. Army base outside Atlanta — has found a story ideally suited to his strengths and interests: how a courageous group of 855 women of color made history during World War II, becoming the first such unit to serve overseas.

Led by Maj. Charity Adams (formidably played by Kerry Washington), the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion faced adversity on both fronts. First, they dealt with discrimination from their fellow Americans, later adding the threat of German attack once deployed abroad. As members of the Women’s Army Corps, these enlisted ladies did not kill Hitler or even carry guns, but were tasked with a significant assignment all the same: sorting a backlog...

‘The Six Triple Eight’ Review: Kerry Washington Commands Tyler Perry’s Rousing World War II Drama for Netflix
Image
You wouldn’t think that a true story about a World War II unit that specialized in sorting mail would prove to be particularly arresting. But add the facts that the unit in question, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, was the first and only Women’s Army Corp unit of color to serve overseas in WWII, and that, faced with the impossible task of sorting 17 million pieces of mail in six months, they managed to do it in less than three, and you have Tyler Perry’s inspiring The Six Triple Eight. Receiving a limited theatrical release before streaming on Netflix two weeks later, the film represents the latest in a seemingly endless series of little-known true-life tales plucked from history to powerful cinematic effect.

Perry’s screenplay, based on Kevin M. Hymel’s 2019 article in WWII History Magazine, largely revolves around two real-life figures: Lena Derriecott King (Ebony Obsidian,...

‘The Six Triple Eight’ Review: Kerry Washington And Exceptional Ensemble Bring Honor To Tyler Perry’s Stirring True WWII Story Of Black Female Army Unit
Image
Writer-director Tyler Perry takes a step up as a versatile filmmaker in bringing Netflix’s inspiring World War II-set true story The Six Triple Eight to the screen to tell the largely untold story of the Women’s Army Corps Unit of Color and their heroic and important achievement during the war in Europe in 1945. This unit was made up of more than 855 women of color, mostly Black women who endured racism, sexism, grueling weather and conditions far beneath their male counterparts, only to become uncelebrated heroes after being deployed to England, then France in order to make sure the letters from and back to home for soldiers landed in the right hands.

In a genre that has seemingly explored every possible story and angle of WWII in films made both during it and after over the past 80 years, this is one that appears largely hidden, but now is getting...

Tyler Perry on Directing Oprah Winfrey for the First Time in ‘The Six Triple Eight’: ‘I Wanted to Find Something Worthy of Her’
Image
Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey have been friends for nearly two decades, but his latest film, Netflix’s “The Six Triple Eight,” marks the first time Perry directed the cultural icon.

The film reveals the untold story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only troop of Black women and women of color to serve in Europe during World War II. The 855 women of the “Six Triple Eight,” as they were known, contributed to the war effort in a critical way — by sorting through a three-year backlog of mail (17 million pieces of it) and dramatically improving morale. Kerry Washington stars as the troop’s commander Major Charity Adams, while Winfrey portrays famed activist, educator and civil rights leader Mary McLeod Bethune, who was influential in the Roosevelt Administration and advocated for Black women in the armed forces.

“I had to find the right thing for her,” Perry told Variety...

The drama, available in select theaters starting Dec. 6 and due on the streamer Dec. 20, is inspired by the real-life story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the sole all-Black, all-female Women’s Army Corps unit, the members of which were tasked with sorting the massive backlog of undelivered mail for U.S. service members in England and France.

“Ladies, we have been ordered to provide hope,” Washington’s commanding officer Major Charity Adams decrees to her troops in the clip. “The soldiers have not heard from their loved ones and their loved ones have not heard from them. When there is no mail, there is low morale.”

Per the film’s logline, “Despite...

Gillain Anderson Tells David Duchovny Why She Left 'The X-Files'
Image
Gillian Anderson was an integral part of The X-Files success, and she has now opened up about why she finally had to say no more after Season 11. Alongside David Duchovnys Fox Mulder, Anderson faced the unexplainable as Dana Scully in the hit sci-fi series, but in 2018, just ahead of the Season 11 premiere, the actress announced that she was not going play the role again. In a new interview on Duchovnys Fail Better podcast, the pair reminisced about the moment she decided that she had had enough of chasing aliensor more precisely, being a mother on the show.

It felt like Scullys trajectory was no longer one of strength and agency. It felt like it was beholden to an old idea of what a woman is Literally all she could talk about was William and finding William. Thats literally a one-track song.

Of course, Season 11 ended with the bombshell that her character was pregnant,...

Virginia Carter, Norman Lear’s Invaluable Adviser, Dies at 87
Image
Virginia Carter, the feminist activist who was hired by Norman Lear to advise him on social issues and marginalized groups, providing insight the famed TV producer would use for plotlines and characterizations in his provocative shows, has died. She was 87.

Carter died Oct. 17 of natural causes at her home in Redondo Beach, documentary filmmaker Martha Wheelock, a longtime friend, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Carter had spent 11 years as a research physicist for the Los Angeles-based Aerospace Corp., a think tank for the U.S. government, and was president of the local chapter of the National Organization for Women when she was hired by Lear’s Embassy Television as director of creative affairs in 1973. (Lear’s then-wife, Frances, had met Carter at Now and brought her to his attention.)

Even though Lear had big hits at the time with CBS’ All in the Family and Maude, the Canadian-born Carter had never heard of him.

‘I get into trouble’: Gillian Anderson on being brave, her resting face and much anticipated book of sexual fantasies
Emily Maitlis
Her uncanny portrayals of famous women have brought her legions of fans. Now, as she prepares to play Emily Maitlis in the pivotal Prince Andrew interview, the actor talks to Eva Wiseman about acting, soft drinks and ‘side hustles’

“I have a tendency to be cast as those types of women who have unbelievable brains,” says Gillian Anderson, running her hands through her glamour of blonde hair, “because my resting face is intellectual, as if I’m thinking about Proust or the world order. When in fact it’s usually, actually, dinner.” The next unbelievably brained woman Anderson will play is British journalist Emily Maitlis, in Scoop, a film about the process of securing her 2019 Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew. This was the interview in which he discussed his friendship with sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein, his inability to sweat, and the Woking branch of Pizza Express, and, in 50 fast minutes,...

Netflix’s ‘Scoop’ Teaser Starring Gillian Anderson Tackles Infamous Prince Andrew Epstein Interview
Image
Another royal scandal is getting the Netflix treatment.

After “The Crown” concluded in 2023, the streaming platform is releasing film “Scoop” about the infamous 2019 BBC “Newsnight” interview between anchor Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew. “The Crown” alum Gillian Anderson portrays Maitlis in the movie based on the former “Newsnight” editor Sam McAlister’s book “Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interview.” Rufus Sewell plays Prince Andrew, the Duke of York at Buckingham Palace.

“Scoop” centers on the behind-the-scenes flurry to land an interview with Prince Andrew after the royal was listed in court papers as part of a U.S. civil case against convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. During the “Newsnight” broadcast, Prince Andrew addressed the allegations made by Epstein and his victims. Prince Andrew alleged that he only knew Epstein through socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, who was later convicted on sex-trafficking charges in December 2021. Maxwell’s story...

‘The Lady Bird Diaries’ Review: The Late First Lady Gives One of the Great Star Turns of Any Recent Doc
Image
The thing that strikes you first is her voice.

Lady Bird Johnson recorded 123 hours of audio tapes recounting the ins and outs of her husband Lyndon Johnson’s administration. The recordings form the spine of Dawn Porter’s illuminating new documentary, “The Lady Bird Diaries,” but they don’t just give a chronological sequence of events. These recordings are an artistic achievement in their own right, primary-source history executed with insight and wit, and as a kind of diaristic blank verse. It helps that Johnson had worked as a journalist; she has a way with words that’s deceptive because she’s not (overly) flowery, though her vocabulary is immense. Instead, she’s direct, spare in her descriptions, with her Texas drawl giving musicality to her prose. The space between the drama of her saying “I want to know what is going on, even if to know is to suffer...
