10 Most Satisfying Sitcom Finales
Image
It's natural for sitcoms to run out of steam by the time they decide to wrap things up, but series finales offer them one last chance to provide a satisfying send-off. Good series finales often rank among a show's best episodes, because they represent unique opportunities that make them stand out from the norm. While these episodes are usually judged by whether they can deliver a crowdpleasing ending, it's important that they also deliver one last dose of what makes the show so popular.

The best series finales need to balance storytelling with the humor that fans love. It's often best for a show's final season to wrap up a few lingering storylines and mysteries along the way, otherwise the finale has too much work to do. While a disappointing series finale can leave a bitter taste - like with Seinfeld or How I Met Your Mother - a good...

‘A Futile and Stupid Gesture’ Review: David Wain’s Netflix Comedy About ‘National Lampoon’ Is Perfectly Described by its Title — Sundance 2018
It’s hard to talk about “A Futile and Stupid Gesture” — a somewhat funny and largely conventional movie about a very funny and wholly unconventional man — without talking about the film’s borderline-insane framing device. If you know absolutely nothing about “National Lampoon” co-founders Doug Kenney (Will Forte) and Henry Beard (Domhnall Gleeson), and would like to keep it that way until David Wain’s biopic can illuminate you on its own terms, consider this a reluctant spoiler warning. For everybody else… well, it’s certainly a choice.

Here’s the gist: Adapted from Josh Karp’s book of the same name, “A Futile and Stupid Gesture” retraces the true story of how two subversive Harvard grads took the road less traveled, started the most dangerous satirical magazine in American history, and became ground zero for a generation of comics that included the likes of Bill Murray and Gilda Radner.

The 56 Most Important Characters of ’30 Rock,’ Ranked
Tina Fey
“30 Rock” was a show rich with odd and diverse sorts; its ensemble included a startingly large number of Academy Award winners/nominees (at least six! And don’t even get us started on the Emmy champs!). This odd collection of characters, in many respects, remain unforgettable even years after the show’s end. Ranking the characters who appeared in three or more episodes wasn’t easy. But by following the ethos established by the show, it also wasn’t hard.

56. Hazel Wassername

As fun as Kristen Schaal is in other roles, something about Hazel went too broad at the wrong times. “30 Rock” always danced on the line between reality and cartoon, but Hazel was basically CGI.

55. Alfonso Disparioso

Who was this mysterious, wordless musician with no rhythm (who might have born a slight resemblance to Tina Fey’s husband/show composer Jeff Richmond)? All we know is that he appeared...

Watch 7 Movie Stars Do Hilarious Robert De Niro Impressions
Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
With Dirty Grandpa, we may have officially reached the point where a Robert De Niro impression is guaranteed to be more enjoyable than a Robert De Niro performance. Fortunately, the indisputable fact that he's one of the most iconic actors in movie history means that there's a ton of imitators out there.

If the man behind Travis Bickle, Jake La Motta and young Vito Corleone isn't quite as common a target as Christopher Walken or Al Pacino, that's only because he's a little bit harder to get right (watch the...

30 Rock: Season 4 (season premiere)
(S04E01) "We'll trick those race-car loving wide-loads into watching your lefty homoerotic propaganda hour yet!" - Jack

One of the many, many reasons 30 Rock is one of my favorite shows is because it's well aware of its own world. For example, one of the running jokes tonight was about Josh (Lonny Ross). I spent most of the last two seasons wondering where Josh was. He'd make a cameo here and there, but he's been pretty much missing since the first season. Liz and Jack talked about this tonight when Jack revealed that Tgs needed a new cast member and Liz wondered about Josh's popularity on the show. Jack said "Oh, that's right, Josh. I forgot about that guy. You think that's a good sign?"

For the record, Josh was indeed in this episode, for a few seconds. He quit and then attempted to tip over the table when he...

Alec Baldwin, Jane Krakowski, Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, and Jack McBrayer in 30 Rock (2006)
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
Alec Baldwin, Jane Krakowski, Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, and Jack McBrayer in 30 Rock (2006)
30 Rock -- Something happens when you assemble the right group of actors and give them the right words to say. It's called magic — or, in this case, the cast of 30 Rock. Once again, the ensemble is being recognized for its outstanding work. Obviously, Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, and the inimitable Tracy Morgan anchor the group. But as with all great casts, the supporting players shouldn't be overlooked — where would Taxi be without Latka and Reverend Jim? Rounding out the noteworthy 30 Rock crew are Jane Krakowski, Scott Adsit, Katrina Bowden, Maulik Pancholy, Lonny Ross, Judah Friedlander, Keith Powell, Kevin Brown, Grizz Chapman, and the hilarious — even when he just stands there grinning — Jack McBrayer. The team magic was never more apparent than in the recent "Christmas Special" episode. As Kenneth (McBrayer) and Tracy (Morgan) listen in the background, Liz Lemon (Fey) delivers toys to a needy family, explaining that she found them through...

'30 Rock's' return: Who gets voted off the island?
Update: There is a photo from the April 17 "30 Rock" episode on the second half of this item. That episode will feature the return of a memorable character from Season 1.

If you don't want to know the details of the "30 Rock" episode that will air April 10, when the show finally returns from its strike-induced break, then stop reading this item now.

If you do want to know -- and just reading the following episode summary from NBC made me chortle -- then keep going. It references a fake NBC show that we've seen mentioned on "30 Rock" before (and the faux show may well be in development at the real NBC, who knows).

By the way, information on other returning NBC comedies is here.

"I have laughed out loud at this show, and I am thrilled for the opportunity to work with such great comic actors," she said. "I am very excited".

30 Rock, which is nominated for 10 Emmys, stars Tina Fey, who also is creator and executive producer, and Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski, Scott Adsit, Jack McBrayer, Judah Friedlander, Lonny Ross, Keith Powell and Katrina Bowden.

"We're thrilled to have such an amazing actress come join us," Fey said, quipping that "also, a lot of guys on our crew want 'The Sopranos' ending explained to them."

Added Baldwin: "Obviously, it's a very exciting thing for all of us to have Edie come on the show."...
