Plans for Disney to produce a new adaptation of Jules Verne's 1869 underwater adventure novel 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea seem to be back on track, thanks to director David Fincher. The Fight Club director approached the studio's new production head Sean Bailey with interest in making the movie and is currently in negotiations with the studio, as is screenwriter Scott Burns, who has been slated to write the new take on Verne's classic story.

Now this might just be a bit of shepherding no one saw coming: David Fincher at the helm of Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake. McG (Terminator Salvation) may have departed the early iteration of the film, but the studio has not, in fact, canceled the project, as many had perhaps prematurely concluded.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog, the studio is in negotiations with Fincher and writer Scott Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum) to develop a new take on the classic Jules Verne tale.

Apparently the project came together after Fincher approached Disney this winter, wanting to work on a big blockbuster movie, somewhat of a departure from the dark, R-rated dramas such as Fight Club and Zodiac for which he's become known in recent years.

Walt Disney Pictures new head, Richard Ross, has been making some pretty abrupt project development changes at the studio recently, including a suspension of both McG's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Robin Williams' comedy Wedding Banned. Now, according to Variety, the latest project that's been halted is a follow-up to 2007's Wild Hogs.

Brad Copeland, who wrote the original film, had already drafted the script for the sequel, and new writers were in the process of being hired to take over. Moreover, discussions had already commenced with the stars of the first film, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, William H. Macy and Tim Allen, but since no monetary contractual obligations had been established, Ross decided to leave well enough alone and kill the project.

Disney shrunk Miramax at the beginning of October, getting rid of about 75% of the work force. It wasn't a major studio with thousands of employees, but 75% is pretty much a work stoppage. Hard for 20-odd employees to really run a competitive shop in the movie business these days.

Perhaps that's what Miramax president Daniel Battsek thought, as well. He's leaving the company, which is being shuttled across the country from New York to Burbank.

"With the change in direction at Miramax, we have reached a mutual agreement with Daniel Battsek that he will leave his post as president, effective January 2010," said newly minted Disney chairman Richard Ross in a statement.
