Video Exclusive: Former ‘Superman’ Star Brandon Routh Admits He ‘Cried’ Watching New ‘Superman’ Movie
Image
Former Superman star Brandon Routh spoke exclusively to uInterview about his reaction to the new Superman movie. “I cried several times in the movie, I’ll be honest,” Routh told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “I think David [Corenswet] did a fantastic job. I have not met him, but I just think that he carried the spirit, the earnestness and the sincerity of Superman. I think it’s exciting to have him back and have crypto. And I mean, there are so many fun things about the movie. It’s a very ambitious movie, and I can’t wait to see where they’re going. And I think it’s just a great opportunity to have these DC properties who haven’t been able to mature and manifest in the way that may be best for them, for them to have a new space to do that because I think the DC...

Devious Maids Actor Reveals He Was Once the Front-Runner To Replace Christopher Reeve As Superman
Image
There’s no shortage of “almost Supermans” in Hollywood. There are plenty of actors who came close to wearing the cape but never quite took flight. One of them is Devious Maids and Chuck actor Ryan McPartlin, who recently took a stroll down memory lane on Instagram, reminding everyone that in the early 2000s, Us Weekly claimed he was the “front-runner” to replace Christopher Reeve. But as fate would have it: he wasn’t. “Every time a new Superman movie hits theaters,” McPartlin wrote, “I’m transported back to the early 2000s when Us Weekly boldly declared that I was the front-runner to be the next Man of Steel. Spoiler alert: I wasn’t.” McPartlin, now 50, went on to praise Brandon Routh, the actor who eventually nabbed the role in Superman Returns (2006), saying, “@brandonjrouth was clearly born to wear the cape. And my family learned a valuable lesson that day:...

Every Single Superman Actor (Movies and TV) Ranked!
Image
Who’s your definitive Superman? Is it George Reeves in his strongman leotard? Maybe it’s Henry Cavill, playing the most Superman-looking Superman I’ve ever seen. Or perhaps it’s the wholesome farm boy Clark Kent, played by Tom Welling on Smallville. Whoever your favourite is, today we’re celebrating every major live-action take on the Man of Steel, across both big and small screens. We recently published an article on cinematic portrayals, but now we’ve decided to take a bigger swing. We’ve rounded up nine major portrayals, and we’re ranking them based not on the movies or shows they were in, but purely on the performance and depiction of Superman himself. That’s right—this is about the actors and how well they embodied the character.

#9: Nicolas Cage (Superman Lives)

This barely counts, and that’s why it’s at the bottom. Cage was...

Arrowverse's Legends of Tomorrow Make A Shocking Return, Confirmed As Official DC Canon
Image
It's time for fans of DC's Legends of Tomorrow to celebrate, as the iconic television team has made a shocking jump into comic canon. The bad news: they're being hunted by an army aiming to kill all time travelers.

The shocking revelation arrives with little warning in Justice League: Dark Tomorrow Special #1, as a masked superhero seeks help from DC's greatest heroes. But it's the character's vehicle which begins to establish the TV/comic crossover, instantly recognizable as the Waverider piloted by the Arrowverse's time traveling squad.

The ship is only the first of several clues dropped for Legends of Tomorrow viewers, with the most important one being the true identity of the hero hiding beneath the mask (for now).

Legends of Tomorrow Returns, As One Member Crashes The Waverider Into DC Canon Justice League: Dark Tomorrow Special #1 by Mark Waid, Marc Guggenheim, Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr.

5 Actors Who Almost Played Superman Before David Corenswet
Image
Thanks to James Gunn's charmingly silly "Superman," David Corenswet has joined a class of actors that includes the likes of Christopher Reeve, Henry Cavill, and Brandon Routh, all of whom have had the honor of playing the Man of Steel in a live-action project. Where history ranks the Corenswet among the greats who've portrayed Clark Kent and his superhero alter ego throughout the years remains to be seen, but his iteration of the character is certainly the funniest version in quite some time. It's also a refreshing change of pace following Superman's ultra-serious era under Zack Snyder, which will divide fans of superhero cinema until the end of time.

What's more, no one is disputing the fact that Corenswet looks the part. His dark hair, endearing smile, general good looks, and nice guy qualities align with Superman's classic features and characteristics. Heck, it wouldn't be shocking to learn that...

Image
Many remember the events of 2006’s Superman Returns, where we witnessed Brandon Routh‘s portrayal of the titular protagonist in the film. Even in CW’s Arrowverse, he has played the role of Superman and even The Atom. But now, we know his alleged partner has seen success with projects involving DC IPs as well.

Rachael Leigh Cook, who is being reported to be in a relationship with Routh (via People), voiced the character of Chelsea Cunningham in Dcau’s Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. This film is one of the most critically acclaimed in the animated universe, with a whopping 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

James Gunn's Superman Box Office Just Beat Out Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel For A New Record
Image
The success of James Gunn's Superman movie continues as the DC Universe installment has surpassed Zack Snyder's Man of Steel in a major box office update. The Man of Tomorrow has finally made his cinematic return, as the Superman ending has become a proper launch for the Dcu timeline, with DC Studios' rebooted franchise marking the dawn of a new era for the DC brand.

Starring David Corenswet as the newest take on the DC legend, the Superman movie has become one of the first critical wins for DC in many years after several Dceu films struggled, which brought an end to the decade-long franchise in 2023. As Superman continues its theatrical run, the 2025 installment has now hit another box office record.

Box Office Mojo is reporting that Gunn's Superman movie has officially crossed $292.4 million at the domestic box office as of Tuesday, July 29, with a total of $506.5 million worldwide.

"[Making] Ma and Pa Kent Stupid Rednecks. That's A Choice": Lois & Clark Star Dean Cain Weighs In On Superman
Image
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman star Dean Cain has become a divisive figure in recent years, and when the Maga contingent came for Superman following James Gunn's immigrant comments, he was first in line to tear into the "woke" reboot.

Talking to Variety, the actor was a little more level-headed and admitted that, "Seeing Krypto in the trailer gave me goose bumps. He saves a squirrel. He saves a little girl. I respect that."

It's unclear whether the actor has actually sat down to watch Superman, though he doesn't sound overly enthused by some of the creative decisions made in Gunn's first DC Studios movie.

"James Gunn and his decision to make Ma and Pa Kent the stupid rednecks. That’s a choice," Cain pondered. "And Superman has to be saved, like, repeatedly? On a movie this size, every decision is a choice made carefully.

‘Ick’ Director Joseph Kahn on Returning to Filmmaking, Fighting for Creed Rights and Crafting a Modern Disaster Movie: ‘When the Monster Comes, We Don’t Get Along’
Image
What do Eminem’s “Without Me,” Lady Gaga’s “LoveGame” and Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” have in common? They all have music videos directed by Joseph Kahn, who, after a seven-year hiatus, returns to cinemas with his new creature-feature comedy “Ick,” in theaters now.

Kahn updates his Y2K swagger for a 2025 audience in his narrative comeback, which acts as a VFX-fueled meditation on nostalgia, disaster films and Gen Z’s cultural dominance. Starring Brandon Routh, Malina Pauli Weissman, Mena Suvari, Harrison Cone and Taia Sophia, “Ick” follows Hank, a high school it-boy turned high school janitor. As Hank and Eastbrook’s graduating class are consumed by visions of an unfulfilling tomorrow, they largely (and hilariously) ignore an invasive alien entity known as the Ick, which threatens to destroy their futures altogether.

Days before the wide release of “Ick” on July 27, Kahn sat down with Variety to discuss his return to feature filmmaking,...

Brandon Routh and Mena Suvari tell us all about their alien invasion horror/comedy Ick
Image
Alien invasion films seem to be having a bit of a comeback (with Spielberg even coming back to the subgenre next year), but they often follow a similar formula. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s often either the Independence Day or Invasion of the Body Snatchers approach. Joseph Kahn’s Ick instead gives us a Blob-like lifeform that has been around for decades, slowly permeating the everyday life of everyday people. It can get pretty brutal while still maintaining a fun lightness. You can check out Bumbray’s review of the film Here.

Stars Brandon Routh, Mena Suvari, Malina Pauli Weissman, and director Joseph Kahn get into the fun and difficulties of making this alien invasion horror/comedy. Routh was a bit more reserved, discussing the big differences between his time in the Superhero world and the world of horror. Mena gets into the fun...

Actor Brandon Routh discusses his role the new comedy-horror film, Ick, in an exclusive uInterview video. “I’d never done a football movie or TV show,” Routh told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “I’m a football fan. I didn’t play much. I only played in seventh grade. But I know how to play football. And so it was cool to step into being a quarterback for those couple of days and have that be such a fun part of the movie. Because again, when I moved out to Hollywood, I missed the Varsity Blues moments and all those kind of opportunities of those that age movies. So to get to do it here and to do it with Mina Suvari, playing with my high school girlfriend was pretty awesome.” Ick is now playing in New York and L.A. and opens in theaters nationally on July 27.

With Ick hitting theaters this weekend, we recently caught up with director Joseph Kahn (Bodied; Torque) to talk about his latest monster movie that blends classic creature-feature thrills with a modern twist.

In the film, Kahn explores the chaos unleashed by a mysterious entity known as the Ick. The synopsis reads, "For almost two decades, a viscous vine-like growth known colloquially as “The Ick” has benignly crept into every nook and cranny of American life while the residents of small town Eastbrook remain blasé about its existence. The exceptions are former high school football star-turned-hapless science teacher Hank and his sardonically perceptive student Grace who are thrown together by Grace’s mom Staci’s closely-guarded secret and a mutual suspicion that the Ick is about to unleash some monstrous mayhem."

Brandon Routh Swaps DC for Marvel at Comic-Con
Image
Brandon Routh just pulled off one of the best Comic-Con surprises of the year. And no, it didn’t involve a red cape. The 45-year-old actor, best known for his turn as Superman in Superman Returns (2006), showed up at an All-American Rejects concert dressed head-to-toe in Spider-Man cosplay. Entertainment Weekly even posted the moment on Instagram, writing, “Surprise! Brandon Routh walked out on stage dressed in full Spider-Man cosplay during the packed All-American Rejects concert at #ComicCon.” And, of course, fans lost it. “Dare I say it, he’d make a great older Peter Parker,” one person wrote. Another chimed in with a cheeky nod to his Scott Pilgrim vs. The World villain: “But does he have vegan powers?” One comment simply said what everyone was thinking: “I totally see him as Spider-Man.” And, honestly, they’re right! Routh does look like he could swing into the MCU tomorrow as a seasoned Peter Parker.

Sdcc Highlights: Nothing Beats Brandon Routh Ditching Superman For a Spider-Man Costume
Image
Brandon Routh is widely recognized as one of the best versions of live-action Superman, and he deserves every bit of that praise. But wait, what if he ditched the Man of Steel to become Spider-Man? Sounds unbelievable, yes, but that’s exactly what he did at the recently held San Diego Comic Con (Sdcc) 2025.

As can be seen in the videos currently making rounds on the internet, the superhero from Superman Returns really left pretty much everyone’s mouth hanging wide open when he took the stage during the All-American Rejects’ set while clad, neck to toe, in the web-slinger’s red and blue costume (via @getFANDOM on X).

But as attention-grabbing as that was, that move was followed by the actor going on to promote his upcoming horror-sci-fi, Ick.

How Joseph Kahn’s ‘Ick’ Sets Itself Apart from the Current Body Horror Trend [Interview]
Image
Body horror is on a hot streak lately, but leave it to Detention director Joseph Kahn to forge his own path. Ick, the filmmaker’s latest, brings the carnage and comedy in spades with an energetic pop punk ode to retro creature features.

Fathom Entertainment brings Ick to select theatres in New York and Los Angeles for a one-week theatrical run starting Thursday, July 24, and expands to theaters nationwide July 27-29.

Ick stars Brandon Routh as Hank, a former high school football star turned science teacher dealing with life’s disappointments when the plant-based “Ick” that’s long plagued the town suddenly becomes far more aggressive and rampant. It’s the type of fast-spreading alien threat that calls to mind films like The Blob, but with a contemporary spirit and sense of humor, especially when it comes to skewering the generational divide.

That retro monster movie meets modern comedy presents...

The Flash Actor Grant Gustin Reviews The Dcu's Superman Movie
Image
Grant Gustin, who portrayed The Flash in the Arrowverse, shares his DC Universe review of James Gunn's Superman movie. 2025 is marking one of the best years for DC's theatrical legacy in a long time, as the Superman movie has emerged as a box office success while also receiving a lot of critical praise.

The installment sets up the wider world of the DC Universe via both its central story and the Easter eggs and DC references in the Superman movie, showing that the franchise's journey has just started. As fans and critics are making their voices heard about Gunn's Superman film, several DC actors of the past have also provided their thoughts about the 2025 installment.

One such actor to have shared their thoughts about Superman is none other than Grant Gustin, who starred as Barry Allen in The Flash TV show and the wider Arrowverse, as the DC...

Former Superman Actor Addresses Dcu Man Of Steel "Weakness" Complaints & James Gunn Movie Criticisms
Image
Warning: This article includes Spoilers from the Superman movie. One of the many actors to have played Superman in live-action has weighed in about the DC Universe commentary surrounding James Gunn's new take on the DC icon. Following the Superman movie ending, Krypton's last son has an open future in the world of the Dcu, with David Corenswet now playing one of the franchise's most legendary superheroes.

A big topic of discussion for Superman has been how Corenswet's Clark Kent is depicted, both in terms of whether the hero can be deemed "weak", and in terms of how his morals are displayed. This has led to a range of takes on things like Superman's power levels, or the moments in the Superman movie where Clark saves animals.

During an exclusive interview for Brandon Routh and Joseph Kahn's movie, Ick, ScreenRant's own Grant Hermanns asked the former...

James Gunn's Superman Made One Of The Previous Man Of Steel Stars Cry
Image
Superman has been a part of American history for the better part of the century. He's famously faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. But he can also cry -- at least according to one actor who once donned the iconic blue-and-red spandex.

While audiences might associate the character of Superman with either James Gunn's hope-punk defender of justice from his recent blockbuster smash hit "Superman" or with Henry Cavill's depiction in Zack Snyder's brooding "Man of Steel," the truly definitive performance of Superman against which all others are judged remains Christopher Reeve's iconic portrayal of Kal-El from 1978's "Superman." While the film's three sequels produced diminishing results, Reeve's performance endured in cinema history. So when "X-Men" director Bryan Singer was hired to direct a new take on the iconic hero in the mid-2000s,...

Superman Returns Star Brandon Routh Shares His Take On James Gunn's Dcu Reboot: "I Cried Three Times"
Image
Bryan Singer's Superman Returns was not exactly well-liked by fans when it hit theaters back in 2006, but many would agree that, whatever faults the movie may have overall, Brandon Routh did a pretty good job in the role of Clark Kent/Superman.

The film's tepid reception led to a planned sequel being scrapped, but Routh would get the opportunity to play the Man of Steel many years later as the Kingdom Come version of the legendary DC Comics hero for the CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths television event.

This appearance most likely marked Routh's final time in the iconic red and blue suit, but the actor has often spoken about his love for Superman and clearly has a strong grasp of what's made him such a popular and enduring character over the years.

While speaking to Variety to promote his new horror movie, Ick, Routh revealed that he...

'Superman' Star Brandon Routh Reveals His Emotional Reaction to James Gunn's Reboot
Image
One of the former actors honored with bringing the Man of Steel to live-action life in the past has broken his silence about the new version of Superman by James Gunn. Brandon Routh, most famous for portraying the iconic superhero in the 2006 feature film Superman Returns, has now declared his support for the film, with the actor having a surprisingly emotional reaction to the Dcu reboot.

Back in 2006, Routh was responsible for breathing new life into the character who had stayed dormant (at least in the feature film format) for decades. Superman Returns was one of the actor's first movies, and though it had a decent reception from critics and audiences, Warner Bros. felt that it just wasn't enough to warrant a franchise. Routh had no choice but to redirect his career outside the superhero genre. Nonetheless, he has shown nothing but support for the 2025 reboot, saying, "It was a lot of fun,...

"I Cried No Less Than Three Times": Previous Superman Actor Reviews The 2025 Dcu Movie

A former Superman actor gives his review of James Gunn's DC UniverseSuperman movie. Ick Review: Joseph Kahn’s Riotous, Satirical Take on the Creature Feature
Image
Note: This review was originally published as part of our 2024 TIFF coverage. Ick opens in theaters on July 24.

The world is ending and nobody cares in Ick, Joseph Kahn’s latest genre offering after 2017’s Bodied and 2011’s Detention. Despite only making four features in 20 years, Kahn is ubiquitous in pop culture from his background in directing music videos for major artists like Britney Spears and Taylor Swift. He also directed 2004’s Torque, a film received so disastrously even he pokes fun at it. That might explain why, after making one studio film, he’s directed all of his following films independently––including Ick, a riotous take on the creature feature and a scathing satire of society’s apathetic attitude in the face of existential threats.

It takes almost no time to see that Ick is very much Kahn’s own creation. This film runs rampant without a single studio note.

Brandon Routh is speaking out about the new Superman movie!

The 45-year-old actor previously portrayed the DC superhero nearly 20 years ago, in Superman Returns, which debuted in 2006, and once again in The CW’s five-part “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event in late 2019 and early 2020.

While promoting his new movie Ick on Monday (July 21), Brandon shared his thoughts on the 2025 movie and David Corenswet‘s portrayal.

Brandon Routh on ‘Ick’ and Why David Corenswet Is a ‘Fantastic’ Superman: ‘I Cried No Less Than Three Times’
Image
When James Gunn’s “Superman” was released earlier this month, former Man of Steel Brandon Routh cheered its arrival on Instagram.

A July 12 post featuring a trailer for the movie was accompanied by Routh’s message, “Go see #Superman in theaters now!”

He also wrote, “Seeing it soon! But at @fanboy_expo in Nashville— talking to all the amazing Superman fans who have seen it already, and we are very excited to see it soon! Same as me!”

Routh, who starred as the DC superhero in 2006’s “Superman Returns,” tells me he has now seen the movie.

“It was a lot of fun,” he said Monday while promoting his new sci-fi horror comedy, “Ick.” “I really enjoyed it. I think David [Corenswet] is fantastic. I cried no less than three times.

“I see this in a different way. I come at it from a different perspective,” Routh added. “I really got...

Superman’s Next Big Challenge: David Corenswet’s Fight Against Typecasting
Image
Up, up and away! This looks like a job for Superman’s agents.

After breaking out as “Superman” in the title role, David Corenswet has become Hollywood’s newest leading man. But for the 31-year-old actor, his newfound superhero stardom is also the town’s most notorious career trap.

Corenswet must quickly leverage his breakout role into the right projects before the cape starts to feel like an albatross around his neck. “Superman” has won over critics and fans and delivered a second strong week of box office returns, with Corenswet’s performance being singled out as a particular highlight. He brings Superman back to his boy scout roots and makes the man of steel vulnerable and relatable.

But the career trajectory for actors who have portrayed Superman has been largely abysmal.

If Corenswet doesn’t capitalize on his newfound high profile, he could fall prey to the same typecasting...

The 'Superman' Cast Is Earning Double What Henry Cavill Made for 'Man of Steel'
Image
One week has passed since Superman hit theaters, and it’s safe to say the Dcu launch has been a hit for Warner Bros. The first film under James Gunn’s creative control soared to over $220 million worldwide over its first weekend and is continuing to break barriers, now flying towards the $300 million mark. For a big-budget feature with a lot of pressure riding on it, given all the plans for DC’s future, however, the salaries have appeared on the modest side for its stars. According to a Variety report, Gunn himself got the biggest paycheck at $15 million, 20 times what the new Clark Kent and Lois Lane, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, made at $750,000 apiece. It may not seem like a lot when compared to superhero salaries nowadays, but for a franchise starter, their totals are roughly in line with past Supermen and other comic book movie stars.

Compared to their direct predecessors,...

‘Superman’ Soars Past Brandon Routh’s Failed Franchise-Starter at Global Box Office
Image
Following a blockbuster debut last week, director James Gunn’s Superman continued to dominate the box office as it prepares to face direct competition in the form of fellow superhero film The Fantastic Four: First Steps in a few days. This weekend, Supermansoared past the $200 million mark domestically and the $400 million mark worldwide, further establishing itself as a solid win for Warner Bros. The studio had a difficult start to the year, but has delivered five hits in a row, including F1, which it’s only distributing for Apple Studios. Superman is the studio’s second-biggest hit of 2025, behind onlyA Minecraft Movie.

With around $235 million domestically and another $172 million from overseas markets, Superman’s cumulative global box office haul stands at $406 million. The movie has now overtaken the entire $391 million global box office haul of director Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. Released in 2006 to mostly positive reviews, the movie featured...

Brandon Routh Dodges Field Full of ‘Ick’ in Exclusive Clip from Joseph Kahn’s Creature Feature
Brandon Routh
Brandon Routh is dodging a whole lot of Ick in our exclusive new clip from director Joseph Kahn’s pop punk creature feature.

Fathom Entertainment brings Ick to select theatres in New York and Los Angeles for a one-week theatrical run starting Thursday, July 24, before expanding to theaters nationwide July 27-29.

In the film, “For almost two decades, a viscous vine-like growth known colloquially as ‘The Ick’ has benignly crept into every nook and cranny of American life while the residents of small town Eastbrook remain blasé about its existence. The exceptions are former high school football star-turned-hapless science teacher Hank (Routh) and his sardonically perceptive student Grace (Weissman), who are thrown together by Grace’s mom Staci’s (Suvari) closely-guarded secret and a mutual suspicion that the Ick is about to unleash some monstrous mayhem.

47 Years Later, James Gunn’s New 'Superman' Beats Christopher Reeve's Classic at Box Office
Image
Director James Gunn didn't hide his reverence for Richard Donner's 1978 original when he was putting together his Superman reboot. The movie, starring David Corenswet as the iconic superhero, debuted last week to mostly positive reviews and an enthusiastic fan reception. Gunn's Superman retained the goofy tone of the original, which famously featured the late Christopher Reeve in the lead role, and paid homage to it by reusing the memorable theme music composed by John Williams. In less than a week of release, the new Superman has overtaken the original at the domestic box office.

The movie has grossed $155 million domestically and $314 million worldwide. This puts it ahead of the $134 million domestic and $300 million worldwide hauls of Donner's original. Of course, these numbers are unadjusted for inflation, but that's standard practice in tabulating box office performance. What this means, in simple terms, is that the original was watched...

Superman Actor David Corenswet Answers if He’s Natty or on Steroids
Image
David Corenswet is stepping into Superman’s boots with a physique that’s turning heads and stirring debate: is he truly natty, or is there more than meets the eye behind that 40-pound leap? At 31, the actor had his work cut out for him: shaping his naturally lean frame into the Man of Steel, and he’s made it abundantly clear: no shortcuts, no shady tricks!

Speaking plainly during a set visit last June, Corenswet laid his cards on the table about the 40-pound climb it took to become Superman. Corenswet told reporters (via The Wrap), pushing back against social media speculation about performance-enhancing drugs:

I would appreciate anybody who wants to clarify in their writing that nobody is suggesting that I gained 40 pounds of muscle.

The reality? Corenswet’s transformation was a calculated blend of muscle, water weight, and some body fat, all within the realm of a rigorous bulking program.

How Superman's costume conveys a message
Image
As James Gunn’s Superman movie soars into theaters, I wanted to touch on a subject. Specifically, discourse around “muscle suits”. Because that’s what a grown man should be doing ahead of something cool—focusing on what another man I don’t even know (and isn’t even real) wears or not. It is totally not at all ridiculous and weird.

I’m genuinely stoked for David Corenswet stepping into the blue, red, and yellow of DC Comics’s cash cow. From the recent trailers, his Clark Kent and Superman feel authentic. This iteration of the Man of Steel harkens back to the days when he felt like a hero who would inspire hope.

Corenswet’s got a lot to live up to, though, in terms of the live-action greats on film, such as George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill. Yet, they each did things that set them apart.

The Most Devastating Death In James Gunn's Superman Is Surprising
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Superman."

James Gunn's "Superman" is currently soaring to impressive box office heights, now that it's opened in theaters worldwide. The film, which is the first big-screen entry in the newly launched DC Universe, is a much-needed victory for the DC Comics brand in theaters, after a decade filled with a select few highs and constant lows. (You can read /FIlm's "Superman" review here.)

The public's perception of Superman as a character has become warped in the current century. Many have dismissed him as outdated and boring, hence Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" (starring Brandon Routh as Superman) failing to take off. On the other end, the deconstructionist, darker take on the character featured in Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" (starring Henry Cavill as the titular hero) for sure had its fans, but it alienated many folks with its boldly different interpretation of Kal-El.

Superman’s Underwear Returns: A Brief History of the Man of Steel’s Red Trunks
Image
Superman’s costume is as iconic as the character himself, in all its red, blue, and (sometimes) yellow-belted glory. The latest version donned by David Corenswet is a visual step back to a more traditional depiction of the suit, after Henry Cavill and television’s Tyler Hoechlin’s versions ditched its most-discussed aspect. I’m speaking, of course, of the red trunks — or underpants, as they are often referred.

To underwear or not to underwear, or how to underwear, has been a focal point of virtually every Superman production. In the last big “Superman” adaptation, filmmaker Zach Snyder did away with the trunks, which he said he couldn’t make “cool.”

“I did fight to keep them, but let’s not forget that the red trunks are left over from Victorian-era strong men, who had to wear flesh-colored leotards and trunks over it so they didn’t look naked. So...

Box Office (Sunday Update): James Gunn's Record-Breaking Superman Soars With One Of The Best 2025 Debuts
Image
Update: 2025/07/13 08:11 Est By Brennan Klein

Superman Soars Above Saturday's $115-$121M Projections

This article was originally written Saturday Am and has been updated Sunday Am with up-to-date box office projections (in bold), a full chart, and further analysis.

Superman is set to break a box office record by the end of its first weekend in theaters. The new superhero movie was written and directed by James Gunn and stars David Corenswet as Superman opposite Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

In addition to being the latest feature film bringing the DC superhero to the big screen after previous adaptations starring Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill, 2025's Superman is the first installment in the DC Universe, the soft reboot of the DC Extended Universe which is being overseen by Gunn and his DC Studios co-chairman and co-ceo Peter Safran.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning,...

Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor Gets One Thing Right That Other Superman Movies Missed
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Spoilers for "Superman" follow.

I'm going to say it, Nicholas Hoult is the best Lex Luthor we've had on the silver screen thus far — no, it's not just because he doesn't wear a wig.

In director James Gunn's "Superman," Lex is the Lex Luthor I know from the Superman comics and cartoons. The highest compliment I can pay to Hoult's Lex is that he reminded me of Clancy Brown's voiceover performance as Luthor in the DC Animated Universe (from "Superman: The Animated Series" to "Justice League Unlimited.")

That's not to throw the other Lex Luthor actors under the bus. Gene Hackman, who played Lex opposite Christopher Reeve's Superman, was one of the greatest screen actors who ever lived. Hoult has even said he wasn't trying to top Hackman. But Hackman was playing the Silver Age Lex Luthor,...

'Superman' Ties for a Franchise Record on CinemaScore
Image
Despite the highly-publicized pressure to launch a new franchise and inaugurate a fresh chapter in the history of superhero cinema, director James Gunn seems to have succeeded. This week, he debuted his first film as co-ceo of DC Studios, the big-budget summer tent pole Superman. The movie opened to positive reviews, and an even better audience response, as it targeted a massive debut at the global box office. Superman is the first film of the new DC Universe, which follows the divisive (and now-defunct) DC Extended Universe franchise. That said, its arrival in theaters hasn’t been entirely without controversy.

Superman opened to positive reviews but drew criticism from certain right-wing groups. The movie is currently sitting at a “certified fresh” 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Pulling off the heroic feat of fleshing out a dynamic new world while putting its champion's big, beating heart front and center,...

All the Live-Action Superman Performances, Ranked
Image
Superman is an icon for a reason, and few heroes have had more live-action representation than the Man of Steel.

While some will accuse the character of being a Boy Scout, based on how many different interpretations of the Kryptonian have appeared onscreen, there is clearly plenty of depth in the character to mine. From iconic performances like Christopher Reeve to small-screen outings from Dean Cain in “Lois and Clark” and Tom Welling in “Smallville,” there have been plenty of ways to enjoy Superman over the years.

These are the live-action performances of Superman, ranked from worst to best.

Dean Cain (Credit: ABC) 8. Dean Cain

Dean Cain spent more of his time in the red and blue tights in a TV series soap than out being Supes. “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” shifted much of the focus away from the Kryptonian’s heroic adventures in lieu of...

Superman Soars To $122 Million Opening Weekend At The Box Office
Image
Earth's sun is shining brightly this summer, and while it might be melting the brains of us ordinary humans, it seems to be giving our planet's resident Kryptonian a power boost. "Superman" debuted in theaters this week, launching the hopes and dreams of the freshly rebooted DC Universe with it, and it's off to a strong start at the box office.

Written and directed by James Gunn, and introducing David Corenswet in the titular role, "Superman" grossed $56.5 million from its opening day and Thursday previews (per The Wrap), putting it on track for an estimated $122 million opening weekend. The film has a reported production budget of $225 million, placing its break-even point somewhere around the $500 million mark.

"Superman" also received an A- CinemaScore based on opening day audience polling, which is the best score for a DC movie since 2022's "The Batman" (which received an A- as well). On top of that,...

Superman Actors Ranked: Which Actors Were the Best At Playing The Man of Steel?
Image
With the release of James Gunn’s Superman (check out Both of our Reviews), it’s time to look back at all of the actors who have played Superman over the years. It can be difficult to portray the power of Supes while still maintaining Clark’s vulnerability. We had to make some cuts (there are a ton of people who have voiced the Man of Steel), but we tried our best to represent the major ones from film and television. So let’s break down all of the performances and see where they rank as the best Superman portrayals.

And don’t forget to leave Your ranking in the comments below!

8. Dean Cain – Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman

It’s tough to get Superman right when it comes to television, especially in the 90s. And given that Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, felt more...

James Gunn’s Superman (Photo Credit – Instagram)

James Gunn’s Superman reboot, starring David Corenswet, is off to a strong start, earning praise from both critics and audiences, with an 82% critics’ score and an impressive 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Over the years, the iconic DC superhero has headlined several live-action films, portrayed by stars like Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill. But how does James Gunn’s take on the Man of Steel compare to those earlier films when it comes to IMDb ratings, specifically ones where Superman plays a lead or major role? And where does it rank among them? Longtime DC fans might be in for a surprise. Let’s take a look.

Men of Steel: Every Actor Who Has Played Superman – Photo Gallery
Image
Happy Superman Day! Today, the skies of cinema are looking bright. While the exhaustive search for the next Man of Steel concluded some time ago with the casting of David Corenswet in James Gunn’s upcoming Warner Bros. Superman, we can still celebrate the enduring legacy of the hero today. Rachel Brosnahan joins him in the role of the intrepid Lois Lane.

Corenswet has some big tights to fill in the role that has been played by a host of actors on film and TV, and radio.

The first Superman was voiced by veteran actor Bud Collyer on the Adventures of Superman radio show that aired from 1940 to 1951. Collyer was also the voice of Superman in the animated series Superman (1941-1943) and the New Adventures of Superman (1966-1970).

The first on-screen Clark Kent was Kirk Alyn in Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman (1950). George Reeves followed in Superman & the Mole Men...

Former Superman Actor Comments on Fans’ Deep Connection to the Man of Steel: “We’re All Clark Kent” [Exclusive]
Image
The new Superman movie is now playing in theaters everywhere, but a Superman star from another project just shed some light on why he thinks the character has been such a success. It’s no secret that Superman is easily one of the most recognizable comic book figures ever — the Kryptonian stands alone at the top with other titans like Spider-Man and Batman, three wildly different characters. One of the things that makes Superman — and Spider-Man, for that matter — so relatable is his humanity. Although he’s an alien from another planet who can stop a speeding bullet and lift an entire building, Superman is still a human who has experienced the same challenges the rest of us.

Collider’s Maggie Lovitt recently moderated a panel at FanExpo Denver for several former Superman actors, including George Newbern, Tim Daly, Brandon Routh, Dean Cain, Tom Welling, and Tyler Hoechlin. During this panel,...

Superman Returns Revisted: A Visual Stunner Released in the Wrong Time
Image
It’s easy to forget that the vast majority of Superman movies have struggled to move the needle. While the original Richard Donner Superman put comic book movies on the map, the Christopher Reeve-led sequels were bad. While Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is fondly remembered, the stories behind the scenes of the next two movies turned into a powder keg in the discourse. Superman Returns is not without its own controversies.

Directed by person non grata Bryan Singer and starring Kevin Spacey before he was accused of sexual harassment, many have chosen to ignore a title they were not too fond of to begin with. However, with the release of James Gunn’s Superman, it’s time to revisit the movie that is the closest we’ve seen to Gunn’s vision.

Superman Returns Plot

After spending five years investigating what happened to Krypton, Kal-El (Brandon Routh) returns to Earth.

From Christopher Reeve To Henry Cavill – Here’s How Much Each Superman Actor Took Home For Wearing The Cape!
Image
From Kirk Alyn to Henry Cavill – Here’s What Every Actor Earned For Playing Superman Before David Corenswet Took Flight(Photo Credit –Instagram)

Before David Corenswet debuted in James Gunn’s Superman, Henry Cavill had established himself as the DC superhero, having featured in Man of Steel in 2013.

Cavill later continued to play Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017). He even made a special appearance in Black Adam, which was released in 2022. However, his abrupt exit from the DC world left everyone disheartened.

Soon after his departure, James Gunn announced that David Corenswet would be the new Superman. Over the years, we have seen different actors wear the same cape and channel the powers of Superman. While Corenswet tries to sweep the audience with his charm, did you know how much the other actors earn from playing Superman from time to time? Scroll ahead.
