Ron Perlman's Gritty Crime Thriller Series On Prime Video Is An Underrated Gem
Image
When Kurt Sutter's Shakespearean crime drama "Sons of Anarchy" ended in 2014 after seven seasons, we as fans were all trying to find something that could fill the gap it left behind. Perhaps that search is still ongoing — and no offense to the "Sons of Anarchy" spin-off, "Mayans M.C.," but that show was never able to live up to its predecessor — because nothing can replicate the vibe of the twisted motorbike brotherhood that Samcro had to offer. Ben Watkins' "Hand of God," which kicked off in the same year that "Sons of Anarchy" wrapped up, wasn't the answer, but at least it gave us the mighty Ron Perlman back in another leading role, this time as morally-bankrupt judge Pernell Harris.

In retrospect, the main issue that "Hand of God" suffered from and got subsequently slammed for by critics was that it tried to be deadly serious and wanted viewers to treat it as such.

Image
Michael B. Jordan credits his role in The Wire for launching his career, allowing him to learn from talented veterans and showcase his talent at a young age. The Wire is widely regarded as one of the greatest shows in television history, which caught the attention of industry professionals. Jordan's role as Wallace in The Wire led to other opportunities in future productions, as people were fans of the show and his character, opening doors for his career.

Michael B. Jordan reflects on his career-making role in The Wire over two decades after the show premiered. Created by David Simon, the highly acclaimed HBO drama began as a show about the Baltimore drug trade, told through the eyes of the dealers and law enforcement, and with each subsequent season, expanded to explore a different facet of the city, including the port system, politics, education, and the media. 10 The Wire Scenes That Are Basically Perfect
Image
The Wire offered viewers a number of iconic moments and memorable quotes, with some scenes that just felt like perfect TV. The HBO crime series ran for five seasons and was known for a brand of meticulous writing and scene structure that offered authenticity and realism to complement its drama. The Wire is a masterpiece of modern television that is still massively important and relevant to American society. The series is known for taking a candid look at the police system but also offers some insight into education and the urban political landscape.

The Wire isn't perfect from start to finish. Like any series, it has its more controversial story arcs, but it's certainly a masterwork of television screenwriting, and even its lowest points have strokes of genius. In a series filled with incredible dialogue, including candid monologues, it's nearly impossible to narrow down the best moments. However, some scenes...

Is To Leslie Based On A True Story? Real-Life Inspiration Explained
Image
To Leslie stars Andrea Riseborough as Leslie Rowland, an alcoholic determined to turn her life around, and after watching the film, viewers wondered if Leslie's story was based on a real one. The movie premiered at South by Southwest in March 2022 before making its way to theaters in October of the same year. Aside from Riseborough, To Leslie stars Allison Janney, Marc Maron, Andre Royo, Owen Teague, and Stephen Root. Michael Morris made his directorial debut with the film, and Ryan Binaco wrote it.

Netflix added the movie to its streaming library in June 2023, and, as of the writing of this article, it has already made its way to the Top 10 Movies in the United States list. It also received rave reviews from critics, and Riseborough even garnered a (controversial) Oscar nomination for To Leslie. But as the credits rolled, one couldn't help but wonder if To Leslie was based...

‘To Leslie’ Instagram Post Referencing Cate Blanchett Could Factor Into Academy Board Meeting
Image
Update: The Instagram post shared on the “To Leslie” account has been removed.

The movie awards industry is buzzing following the news that the Academy is “conducting a review of campaign procedures” after Andrea Riseborough received a surprise best actress Oscar nomination for the independent drama “To Leslie.”

The “grassroots” campaign enlisted numerous famous names to help spread the word about the small indie, but did that break any rules or just smartly play the awards game?

Celebrity influencers aside, an Instagram post on the “To Leslie” page may have violated the Academy’s rules and guidelines.

In a post dated two weeks ago, the official Instagram account for “To Leslie” quoted Richard Roeper’s blurb from his top 10 films of 2022 article from the Chicago Sun-Times, where he listed the movie at no. 5. The quote reads: “As much as I admired Blanchett’s work in ‘Tár,’ my favorite performance by...

The targeted campaigning paid off, pushing Riseborough into the 2023 Oscar Best Actress field ahead of presumed contenders like Danielle Deadwyler for “Till” and Viola Davis for “The Woman King.”

Best Actress Oscar race: Andrea Riseborough (‘To Leslie’) surges into top 10 after celebrity peers express support
Image
The Oscar race for Best Actress is heating up just days before nominations are announced on January 24. The morning after Colin Farrell used his Golden Globes victory speech to stump for Ana de Armas, the “Blonde” star scored an unlikely SAG Awards nomination, while Michelle Williams, fourth in our combined Oscar odds, was snubbed for “The Fabelmans.”

Perhaps the competition’s most interesting development, however, took place outside of the top 10 altogether. Thanks to a wave of support from her peers, Andrea Riseborough, who plays an alcoholic trying to reconnect with her son (Owen Teague) in “To Leslie,” has seen an incredible surge into ninth place (and rising).

John Wayne in El Dorado (1966)
‘To Leslie’ Review: Andrea Riseborough Shines in Good-Hearted, If Conventional, Redemption Story
John Wayne in El Dorado (1966)
This review originally ran on March 12, 2022, for the film’s world premiere at SXSW.

Who gets a second chance? A third? A 20th? And what is the price to pay for these opportunities? Director Michael Morris’s debut film “To Leslie” is a full-hearted, albeit conventional, ode to Leslie (Andrea Riseborough), a woman trying to break free from herself.

In the film’s opening credits, an old news clip airs: Once upon a time, Leslie won the lottery jackpot of just under 200,000 by playing her son’s birth date. She tells the anchor she wants to use the money to get on her feet, open a diner, maybe — but only after she’s bought everyone a round. More than a few thousand rounds later, we learn that these wide-eyed dreams never came to fruition.

When we meet Leslie, she’s been evicted from her motel room, forced to board a...

Andrea Riseborough & Marc Maron in Texas Film 'To Leslie' Trailer

"But you don't gotta worry about me, because, despite your best effort I ain't going nowhere." Momentum Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled To Leslie, marking the feature film debut of TV director Michael Morris. This already premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and will be out in October on VOD to watch. Years after a lottery win, a West Texas single mother is alone, living hard at the bottom of a bottle. Nowhere left to go, she is forced to come home and confront her past. She fights to rebuild her life and find redemption in a place that doesn't want her back. This sounds like a very Texas film in every way. Starring Andrea Riseborough as Leslie, with Allison Janney, Marc Maron, Stephen Root, Owen Teague, Matt Lauria, James Landry Hébert, & Andre Royo. This looks quite good, Riseborough clearly the best part about it,...

If Idris Elba Had His Way, He Wouldn't Have Left The Wire
Image
Few shows, if any, can hope to rival "The Wire" in terms of quality, pop culture influence, or even just the sheer amount of stars-in-the-making who came and went throughout all five seasons of the acclaimed HBO series. From the various Baltimore cops attempting to navigate (and oftentimes directly contributing to) the corrupt system to the gangbangers carving out their territory in the streets to the various individuals caught in between them, creator David Simon made sure to cast each and every role with as much authenticity, talent, and gravitas as he could. After all, when one's ensemble boasts the likes of Lance Reddick, Wendell Pierce, Dominic West, Andre Royo, Michael K. Williams, Reg E. Cathey, and even a young Michael B. Jordan, you must be doing something right.

As one of the bigger and most prominent stars to emerge from the groundbreaking HBO show, Idris Elba brought all the...

Getting The Wire Renewed Was Always An Uphill Battle
Image
Even though it's now widely considered one of the best television series in the history of the medium, if not the very best, David Simon's "The Wire" was frequently on life support. It was a critics' darling, but viewership was never robust, and Emmy voters repeatedly shunned it (the taste-challenged organization coughed up all of two nominations during the show's run). Fortunately, HBO understood the value of committing to a high-quality program regardless of ratings. This is why top-flight artists like Martin Scorsese, Tom Hanks, and David Milch took their network-unfriendly series to the pay-cable channel.

Still, the sword of Damocles hung over "The Wire" at the conclusion of every season. Could HBO justify keeping the show on the air when it kept coming up short in the two metrics that truly matter? This uncertainty was tough for Simon, but especially brutal for the actors.

The Bunk Rides The...

Living A Double Life As Bubbles Wasn't Easy For The Wire's Andre Royo
The Wire (2002)
HBO's "The Wire" spearheaded a new kind of drama television upon its 2002 debut, earning heaps of praise for its patient, cumulative writing and talented cast of lesser-known (at the time) actors. When series creator David Simon pitched the show to HBO's miniseries division, he envisioned a television version of The Great American Novel, writ large over a sprawling season depicting the dissolution of an American city — in this case, Baltimore, where Simon spent a year deposited with the city's homicide unit for a year leading to his Edgar Award-winning novel, "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets." The show...

Amazon Studios has renewed Gloria Calderón-Kellett‘s romantic comedy series With Love for a second season.

Season 1 followed the lives of the Diaz siblings, Lily (Emeraude Toubia) and Jorge Jr. (Mark Indelicato), across various holidays throughout the year as they search for love.

Cancellations/Renewals Scorecard: TV Shows Ended Or Continuing In 2021-22 Season

Along the way, viewers become intimately acquainted with the Diazes’ loved ones, with who they share their lives — the good and the bad.

The season ends on a cliffhanger: It’s Noche Buena and an engagement is imminent, but which couple will walk down the aisle?

Suspects include Lily and Santiago (Rome Flynn), the least likely of the three couples to be taking their relationship to the next level since they’d only recently reconciled.

Jorge and Henry (Vincent Rodriguez III) could be the in love duo ready to put a ring on it. Although they...

SXSW Review: Andrea Riseborough is Brilliant in the Harrowing West Texas Drama To Leslie
Andrea Riseborough
British-born Andrea Riseborough deserves credit for her ability to seemingly morph into any character like a chameleon. With veteran TV director Michael Morris’ feature debut To Leslie the actress brings a tremendous level of sympathy to her West Texan title character. The story is quite straightforward, hinging upon Riseborough’s ability to carry a script with both hope and cruelty.

Once upon a time, Leslie was a young mother who won 190,000 playing the video lottery at her local bar. Years later, she’s strung out and smoking cigarettes down to the filters. When kicked out of the hotel she’s staying at, she moves in with her son James (Owen Teauge) with the promise to get clean. When a neighbor “parties” with her, he has no choice but to kick her out. Her next stop is a group of aging hippy relatives, Duch (Stephen Root) and Nancy (Allison Janney), who...

Michael Morris’ “To Leslie” is a redemptive drama about a poor Southern white lady played by Andrea Riseborough, who wins $190,000 in the state lottery and only learns the value of sharing after she’s drank all her cash away. But for a while there, the film is almost .

Is it going to be — as the first stop along its episodic first half would suggest — a gruesome scream-fest between a bottom-of-the-bottle alcoholic and the semi-adult son (Owen Teague) who’s trying to give her a second chance? Is it going to be the trashy throwdown that’s teased by Leslie’s “The Real Housewives of Nowhere, Texas”-style reunion with her old best friend Nancy (Allison Janney in regal biker queen mode) and her partner Dutch? SXSW Review: Andrea Riseborough In ‘To Leslie’
Image
The meat of this melancholy, live-action country ballad is left up to the imagination, somewhere in the missing years between the title credits and the point at which Michael Morris’s feature debut actually starts. It’s probably just as well, since To Leslie is a hard enough watch as it is, not because it’s significantly depressing (redemption is suggested in myriad moments in its two-hour running time) but because it’s a testament to Andrea Riseborough’s never less than committed performance that it’s hard to see such a sad and vulnerable woman snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at every turn. There are no indications on screen, but anecdotal reports that screenwriter Ryan Binaco based the script on his own mother seem pretty credible.

The credits are a mini-movie in themselves, to the sound of Here I Am by Dolly Parton (SXSW’s patron saint...

‘Truth Be Told’ Season 2 Review: A Tedious Whodunit Despite Octavia Spencer and Kate Hudson
Image
Does unveiling the worst side of humanity have a higher purpose beyond ratings? That’s the question begged after two seasons of Apple TV+’s “Truth Be Told,” which just premiered on the streaming platform.

Long before the 10-episode season ends, you’ll wish it was over. It’s a whodunit, but a tedious one. By the time the “truth” in the title is revealed, it won’t matter. It’s rather anticlimactic.

From writer, showrunner, and executive producer Nichelle Tramble Spellman, starring and executive-produced by Octavia Spencer, the new season also features Kate Hudson in her first lead role in a television series. The second season, which prides itself as a glimpse into America’s obsession with true crime podcasts, is ultimately a dud.

Poppy Parnell (Spencer) dives into a new case that involves a close childhood friend, Micah Keith (Hudson), and the murder of her husband (who may...

Image
The end of a year that has seen television reach a new summit of influence and importance, with the arrival of 2021 on the horizon, provides a moment to look back at the shows that define the medium in the 21st century so far.
