Hunting Grounds Review: Gritty Action, Faulty Logic
Image
The desperate flight from a known evil into the arms of an unknown one is a timeless narrative engine. In Hunting Grounds, this classic thriller setup is given a raw, visceral edge. The story centers on Chloe, a mother whose escape from her violent, mob-connected husband is a matter of life and death. After ensuring her children are safe, she flees into the remote Canadian wilderness, a landscape that promises anonymity and refuge.

There, she encounters Jake, a reclusive woodsman who seems to be the very image of a protector. He offers shelter and security from the henchmen her husband has sent after her. The film skillfully builds an atmosphere of dread, suggesting that this forest sanctuary may be a cage with a far more unpredictable predator inside.

The Brutal Ballet of Survival

The film’s action sequences are its strongest asset, a clear demonstration of director Derek Barnes’ expertise in the world of stunts.

Karate Kid: Legends Lacks One Thing That Made Netflix's Cobra Kai So Satisfying
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Karate Kid: Legends."

In 1984, John G. Avildsen's "The Karate Kid" was one of the best family movies around, and for the past 40 years, nothing has been able to keep it down. The series of films revolving around teenagers overcoming the obstacles in their lives through martial arts has somehow managed to evade obscurity by switching up the formula. Even the 2010 reboot starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith ended up being a pretty good movie in its own right. But let's be real. The only reason "The Karate Kid" franchise is still as prominent as it is today is because of "Cobra Kai."

The YouTube Red turned Netflix sensation is quite the anomaly. There were so many ways in which a legacy sequel series to an '80s phenomenon could have gone sour. But "Cobra Kai" struck hard by pushing those tropes to such an...

‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Cast and Their Salaries in Hollywood: How Much Does Jackie Chan Earn?
Image
The beloved martial arts franchise just wrote itself an exciting new chapter in the form of Karate Kid: Legends. The movie focuses on Kung Fu prodigy Li Fong, who has to deal with his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates. Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio reprise their roles from the previous movies, while Ben Wang is new to the franchise. With the return of Mr. Han and Daniel Larusso, fans are in for a nostalgic ride.

Of course, when a movie as exciting as Karate Kid: Legends drops, people start wondering just how much these stars are actually making. It is no surprise that Jackie Chan, one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood, would have the biggest paycheck.

‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Review: A Triumphant Return to Form
Image
Ben Wang in ‘Karate Kid: Legends’

In the summer of ’84, movie fans met Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), who showed his new young friend Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) how to use karate to handle bullies in The Karate Kid. Now, over 40 years later, the spirit and legacy of that first film are revived on the big screen in Karate Kid: Legends.

Karate Kid: Legends begins with Mr. Han teaching kung fu to students at his dojo in Beijing. Han lets his nephew Li Fong practice, even though it’s against Li’s mother’s wishes. Looking for a fresh start, Li’s mom (Ming-Na Wen) moves with Li to New York City with a new rule… ”No fighting!”

Li quickly makes friends with Mia, a neighborhood girl whose father, Victor, is an ex-boxer who owns a small but popular pizzeria. Trouble quickly finds Li when Mia’s ex-boyfriend Connor Day spots...

Karate Kid: Legends review – charming throwback sequel
Ralph Macchio at an event for The Karate Kid (2010)
Fans of the franchise will get a kick out of Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan teaming up for a breezy new chapter

There’s a lot riding on Li Fong, warrior protagonist of the Karate Kid: Legends. The Beijing émigré (played by Disney mainstay Ben Wang) is barely settled into his new Manhattan surrounds when he finds himself schooling Victor, a West Side pizzaiolo (Joshua Jackson), in the ways of kung fu to help him win a boxing purse and clear his debt with an unfriendly neighborhood loan shark (Tim Rozon). But when Victor is cheated out of a certain win by an illegal knockout blow, Fong is reminded of the tragic death of his kung-fu idol older brother, and his frozen reaction in the moment puts him at odds with Victor’s daughter Mia, an emerging love interest (Sadie Stanley), and his own mother (Ming-Na Wen), who explicitly forbade him from fighting.

‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Review: Charming New Installment Subverts the Formula but Needed to Pick a Lane
Image
Sometimes it feels like “Karate Kid: Legends” is fighting with one hand tied behind its back.

It knows the kind of movie it wants to be, which is a film in the vein of the previous “Karate Kid” stories — including the TV series “Cobra Kai” — where a bullied teenager sorts out his personal issues with the help of a kindly mentor and no shortage of martial arts training montages. It’s a formula that may not be the kind of spectacle-drenched premise that studios now demand from their franchise plays, but it’s one that works regardless of its setting.

But it looks like Sony didn’t want a straight “Karate Kid” reboot this time (2010’s movie only made $359 million worldwide off a $40 million budget so I guess that’s unacceptable) and preferred the comfort of some familiar faces. That makes “Karate Kid: Legends” a movie that understands its identity...

10 Best Western Series Streaming Right Now
Image
More than 60 years after shows like The Rifleman and Gunsmoke aired on television, westerns and neo-westerns are once again popular amongst audiences. But, with so many options now available on TV and online, it may be difficult to choose which series to watch.

Today’s best westerns (not to be confused with the hotel chain) capture the feel of early entries in the genre while staying relevant by incorporating modern dialogue and sociopolitical topics. This has allowed the genre to reach a wider variety of viewers than it might have otherwise done in the 1950s and ‘60s.

Wynonna Earp Brings Supernatural Elements to the Western Genre 2016-2021, Streaming on Netflix

Far from taking a traditional western approach, Wynonna Earp focuses on a descendant of lawman Wyatt Earp as she faces supernatural foes in her hometown of Purgatory. Another key character is the notorious Doc Holliday, who is played by Schitt’s Creek alum Tim Rozon.

10 Sitcom Breakups We Still Haven't Gotten Over
Image
While sitcoms are generally judged on their humor, they can also deliver some devastating emotional moments, especially when on-screen couples break up. Many sitcoms focus on romance as a way to provide some gentle, relatable drama, and as an avenue for humor. However, sitcoms which balance humor with heart can end up creating some surprisingly poignant moments as their love stories take twists and turns.

While some sitcom couples are bad ideas from the beginning, there are others which get the audience rooting for them. If a couple has great on-screen chemistry and they complement one another well, it can be heartbreaking to see their relationships fall apart. Some of the most memorable sitcom moments include dramatic breakups, so fans can remember these heartbreaks for years.

8 TV Seasons That Earned Their 100% Rotten Tomatoes Scores
Image
There are only a few seasons of TV which boast a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, but they're worthy of this honor. Due to the quirks of the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregation system, a single negative review can rob a show of a 100% score. There are many critically-acclaimed seasons of TV that fall short of full marks, and relatively few which have achieved this rare feat over the years.

Some shows have multiple seasons with 100% scores, like The Wire, The Good Place and BoJack Horseman, but these are exceptions to the norm. Most shows can count themselves lucky to have just one season that achieves this level of success. Many great shows have been unable to claim this specific honor, so it's worth celebrating when a show delivers a season of TV that is unanimously praised by critics.

10 TV Shows With Good, Consistent Romance Subplots

A good romantic subplot often proves to be one of the most compelling parts of any TV show. It can elevate the show from being just entertaining to an unforgettable take on the nuances and variety of love out there. These subplots can give audiences a couple to truly root for and keep them invested in the TV show as they watch the highs and lows of love unfold before their very eyes.

These great romantic subplots add an intriguing dynamic to an already compelling narrative, even when the plotline isn't fully centered around it. 10 TV Couples Who Surprisingly Don't End Up Together
Image
Fans often get their own ideas about which TV couples are supposed to end up together, so it can be a big surprise when things don't turn out the way people anticipated. Some couples who seem perfect for each other just can't figure things out in the end, as the writers have other ideas. This can be disappointing for fans, but there are also some cases where a failed relationship makes way for something even better.

Just as there are some TV couples who should break up for good, there are just as many instances of shows splitting up perfectly good couples. With the benefit of hindsight, fans can decide for themselves whether the characters really got their happy endings, or whether the writers forced them into a conclusion which doesn't quite fit. Even though these TV couples didn't last, they are often more popular than what came next.

"Tubi was amazing," Andras said. "They were like, 'No rules. You can push the sexuality. You can definitely push the language.' The name of the game was elevation. Because we're doing a 90-minute special, we wanted to feel like you could only get it on Tubi in this format, but this isn't something you would've seen in Season 3, for example. So, I was stunned."

Tulsa King Season 2 Episode 1 Review: Back in the Saddle
Image
The aptly titled Tulsa King Season 2 premiere finds Dwight “The General” Manfredi back in the saddle, alright.

He’s fighting for his life, giving advice behind bars, and expanding his business, all while navigating new enemies poised to take action to either scuttle or take over his successful Tulsa operation.

Don’t get me wrong; I know he’ll prevail. What’s the point of a show with Sly Stallone behind bars? But still, Dwight’s got a lot on his plate.

(Brian Douglas/Paramount+) Are The Walls Closing in on Dwight?

Thanks to his arrest, it’s the first time anyone has paid attention to Dwight’s Tulsa presence, making things much harder on The General.

Maybe that’s why he constantly toys with the idea of going legit. It’s got to be hard to thrive with that kind of stress. There is always someone out to get him.

The made-for-tv Wynonna Earp movie “Vengeance” sparked discussion among fans following its release on the streaming service Tubi. The 90-minute special focused on demon hunter Wynonna Earp and her allies battling corruption within the Black Badge organization. However, two significant character deaths caused disagreement among viewers of the long-awaited reunion special.

One death dividing fans was Doc Holliday, played by Tim Rozon since the show’s 2016 debut. In a pivotal shootout scene, Doc gunned down five opponents but suffered a fatal wound. Rozon said he supported the creative choice, feeling Doc “died for the one that means anything to him.” He wanted Doc to go down fighting, which the script provided. Co-star Melanie Scrofano called filming the scene difficult but credited the director’s sensitive handling.

Some fans applauded killing off the beloved Doc for story purposes. Others expressed sadness losing the character. Rozon acknowledged different viewpoints, saying as an...

Three Women premieres September 13 on Starz.

The series highlights some taboo and controversial issues that three distinct women experienced, and it will resonate with audiences.

The issues these three women experienced could have happened to any of us. Their stories needed to be told and heard.

‘Wynonna Earp’ Creator Says the Tubi Special’s ‘Cast Has Not Missed a Step’ Since Season 4 Ended 3 Years Ago
Image
“Wynonna Earp” wasn’t going to keep the fans waiting forever for more stories.

The cult series wrapped it’s four-season run back in 2021, and thanks to a small but incredibly mighty fan base that campaigned vocally online, a new 90-minute special is set to air on Sept. 13 on Tubi called “Wynonna Earp: Vengeance.”

Creator Emily Andras told Entertainment Weekly that the show had stories planned for a fifth season but Season 4 was – luckily – written with some closure in mind. Now the special will tie things up once and for all.

“We had been ordered for a season 4 and a season 5, but things were kind of up in the air,” Andras said. “I thought: It’s better to write an ending that is satisfying and if we’re blessed with another season, I can blow it all up. My gamble paid off, for better or for worse.”

That ending saw...
