Biography

    • Albert Stotland Ruddy was a Canadian-born American film and television producer. He is known for producing The Godfather (1972) and Million Dollar Baby (2004), both of which won him the Academy Award for Best Picture, as well as co-creating the CBS sitcom Hogan's Heroes (1965 - 1971).

      Albert was born to Jewish parents, Ruth (Ruddy) and Hy Stotland, in Montreal, Canada, and raised in New York City and in Miami Beach, Florida, by his mother, Ruth Ruddy Hertz.

      He attended Brooklyn Technical High School before earning a scholarship to allow him to study chemical engineering at City College of New York. In 1956, he graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California (USC).

  • At The 45th Annual Academy Awards (1973), Clint Eastwood presented the 1972 Best Picture Oscar to Ruddy, the producer of "The Godfather (1972)".Thirty-two years later, they would jointly accept the 2004 Best Picture Oscar at The 77th Annual Academy Awards (2005), along with fellow "Million Dollar Baby (2004)" co-producer Tom Rosenberg.
  • Ruddy worked for the Rand Corporation before he worked in films, and then later worked for Ayn Rand attempting to produce Atlas Shrugged as a movie in the seventies.
  • After his modest success with Little Fauss and Big Halsy (a film about itinerant motorcycle bums), Ruddy next planned to do a film about female Roller Derby skaters. Then, however, The Godfather came into the world, and the Roller Derby film never got off the ground.
