The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation is putting the program together for its upcoming gala — the Elizabeth Taylor Night of Compassion to be held at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Sept. 18 — by drafting Tina Knowles to receive a marquee honor.
The business mogul, designer, best-selling author and activist has been selected to receive the Elizabeth Taylor Commitment to End AIDS Award for her ongoing support for people living with HIV and for her allyship with the LGBTQ+ community. The gala event, fronted by standout TV host Melvin Robert (who departed his post at Extra and Good Day L.A. to replace the late Sam Rubin at Ktla as entertainment anchor), will feature Cookie Johnson as Etaf’s 2025 champion. Supported by presenting sponsor Gilead Sciences, the Elizabeth Taylor Night of Compassion will include a reception, culinary experience, live performance and views of select items from the Elizabeth Taylor archive.

“Extra” correspondent Melvin Robert will be joining Ktla 5’s “Morning News” as its new entertainment reporter, TheWrap has learned. Robert will be filling the void left by local legend Sam Rubin, who passed away last year.
Robert’s first day on the morning show will be next Monday, a person with knowledge of the hiring told TheWrap; he will be leaving his role at “Extra,” where he has been a senior correspondent since 2022, as he joins Ktla.
Rubin’s passing at the age of 64 from a heart attack in May 2024 rocked Ktla, where he had been its lead entertainment reporter since 1991. The local stalwart received multiple Emmy wins, a Golden Mike award, a lifetime achievement award from the Southern California Broadcasters Association and was named best entertainment reporter by the Los Angeles Press Club during his 33 year run at channel 5.

Ktla Hires Melvin Robert to Fill Sam Rubin’s Role as ‘Morning News’ Entertainment Anchor (Exclusive)
“Good Day LA” anchor and “Extra” correspondent Melvin Robert is heading to Ktla, where he will join the “Ktla Morning News” team as entertainment anchor the week of March 17. Robert will fill the chair that had been held for decades by L.A. TV icon Sam Rubin, who died last May.
It’s a homecoming of sorts for Robert, who previously worked on “Ktla Morning News” between 2016 and 2018 and first interned there as a teenager. More recently, Robert was one of the original anchors at Spectrum News 1; he then joined “Extra” as a senior correspondent and weekend co-host in 2022, adding Kttv’s “Good Day LA” to the mix in 2023.
“It’s really exciting day to be back here,” Robert said of Ktla. “I’m a Southern California native, I grew up in Inglewood. I always dreamed of being on the ‘Ktla Morning News.’ It’s the most iconic show in LA.

Like the grand majority of film critics out there, Roger Ebert, the famous Chicago Sun-Times referent for all things regarding movies, and probably the most important film critic in history, didn’t exactly love horror movies. It didn’t matter if it was on the TV show Siskel & Ebert, with fellow critic Gene Siskel, or reviewing in print material, Ebert famously looked down on most horror movies. Only a handful of scary films made his Great Movies list (according to his website there are only 16), and a four-star rating was not common. But this doesn’t mean he wasn’t impressed by them occasionally, a good example being Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.
Made in 1994, but from an idea director Wes Craven had in 1987, New Nightmare is a different kind of horror film. There’s nothing quite like it in the universe of scary films, and this is probably...

Longtime KTLA reporter Sam Rubin’s cause of death has been revealed.
According to a Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner Office, the anchor and entertainment reporter died naturally from ischemic heart disease due to atherosclerotic coronary artery disease, which results in a lethal heartbeat due to lack of blood and oxygen flowing to the heart.
Ischemic heart disease is caused by narrowed arteries, leading to less blood and oxygen reaching the heart muscle, according to the American Heart Association.
“Mr. Rubin arrived at a local hospital with stomach pain the morning of May 10 after calling 9-1-1 as advised by his doctor,” the medical examiner’s office said in a press release. “He later was pronounced dead in the emergency room.”

Cris Abrego, the Chair of the Television Academy, made the announcement on Ktla this morning, saying the vote in favor of Rubin was unanimous.

“General Hospital” led night one of the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards, winning four prizes — including the outstanding daytime drama Emmy. “General Hospital” won the top daytime drama award for the fourth year in a row.
“Gh” took an early lead as proceedings got underway, including writing, directing and supporting actor performance in a daytime drama series (Robert Gossett as Marshall Ashford). While accepting the honor for daytime drama directing, the show’s team paid tribute to Johnny Wactor, the former “Gh” performer who was recently killed.
Besides Gossett from “Gh,” daytime acting awards were spread out among several shows, with CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” winning two — for lead actress (Michelle Stafford as Phyllis Summers) and supporting actress (Courtney Hope as Sally Spectra). CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” won the drama actor for Thorsten Kaye as Ridge Forrester, who also won last year.

I spent the first 37 years of my life on the East Coast, and even there, I knew who Sam Rubin was.
The beloved Ktla Los Angeles entertainment reporter, who died May 10 at age 64, was a Hollywood fixture for over 30 years, beloved, trusted and respected. Drawing heartfelt tributes ranging from industry veterans like Tom Hanks and Henry Winkler and rising stars like Charmaine Bingwa, I’ve never seen such an outpouring for an entertainment journalist since perhaps Roger Ebert in 2013. Sam greeted everyone with the same infectious enthusiasm and genuine curiosity, whether they were industry stalwarts or nervous newcomers. He was synonymous with Los Angeles but he was also known well outside of Southern California through his reporting for ITV and Australia’s 9 Network.

Over the nine years that I’ve been contributing to Ktla-tv in Los Angeles, I’ve been asked the same question over and over again by people who recognized me from the channel: “What is Sam Rubin really like?” The short answer is simple: With Sam, what you saw was what you got. The news this morning of the death of entertainment journalist Sam Rubin has touched a nerve in Los Angeles, with his home base Ktla going live and commercial free with remembrances and tributes from the top of the 1 o’clock news through the station’s regularly-scheduled programming at 2 p.m. and right into the Ktla News at 3.
Among those calling in was Henry Winkler, who was one of Rubin’s favorite guests.

Jerry O’Connell, another regular on the show, spoke with the anchors on air.
“The man was a legend. Everyone is going to have a story about how Mr. Rubin touched them, personally. My first live interview was with Sam at Ktla.

“Everybody Loves Raymond” creator and “Somebody Feed Phil” host Phil Rosenthal knows a thing or two about Hollywood, which is why Ktla’s Sam Rubin asked him about the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes Saturday morning. When it comes to what is really at the heart of what’s happening, Rosenthal pinned it all on one thing: “Greed.”
He said, “I’ve spoken to the people who are heading up the thing, they don’t know [when it will end].” The problem is “greed … and they’re not in the entertainment business, these people. This is not about studios and networks and writers and actors. This is about Corporate America versus the worker.”
When will Hollywood’s dual strikes end? @PhilRosenthal offers his thoughts. pic.twitter.com/GLyS0HTqXg
— Sam Rubin (@SamOnTV) August 31, 2023
Rosenthal continued, “It’s very obvious that’s what’s happening. These giant conglomerations, they have the entertainment division as almost like an afterthought.

Sam Rubin, the longtime entertainment reporter at Ktla-tv in Los Angeles, will face off with Joy Benedict, a reporter at L.A.’s CBS 2 and Kcal, in the election to represent broadcasters on SAG-AFTRA’s L.A. board of directors.
Rubin is running on presidential candidate Matthew Modine’s Membership First opposition slate, while Benedict was announced earlier this month as running on the ruling party’s Unite for Strength slate headed by presidential candidate Fran Drescher. Election ballots will be mailed to members August 3 and counted September 2.
Rubin, who has been the entertainment anchor on the Ktla Morning News since 1991, said he’s concerned about recent changes in eligibility requirements at the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan. Those changes sparked a lawsuit that claims that they “illegally discriminate based on age” – a charge flatly denied by the plan’s trustees, who say the changes were necessary to keep the plan afloat.

And on April 6, Junket worked with Quibi cofounder Jeffrey Katzenberg as he launched the new streaming app with a crack-of-dawn appearance on the Today Show followed by other press outlets via a day-long media junket. He never left his Beverly Hills home.

During an appearance on Ktla 5 Morning News on Thursday, comedian Kathy Griffin had a tense exchange with Ktla 5 weatherman Mark Kriski about the representation of women in comedy.
As Griffin was discussing the fallout to her now-infamous Trump photo with Ktla anchor Sam Rubin, she admitted that her career has continued to take a hit.
“By the way, I still do not have one single day of paid work ahead of me for the rest of my life,” she said. “Now you tell me that’s not because I’m a 58-year-old female in comedy.”
“I think there’s a lot of 58-year-old comedians that are working out there,” Kriski, sitting at the other end of the anchors’ desk, said.
“Are you? Name five women,” Griffin responded.
“Uh, I’m not into the comedy thing,” Kriski responded.

Terrence Howard attended the 71st annual Emmy Awards on Sunday night, where he gave a rather perplexing interview to Ktla on the red carpet.
Asked about his plan to retire from acting after the sixth and final season of Fox's Empire, the 50-year-old actor spoke about "personal discoveries" and "the science that Pythagoras was searching for," among other topics that seemed to confuse news anchor Sam Rubin.
"I was able to open up the flower of life and find the real wave conjugations that we've been looking for, for 10,000 years," said Howard. "...

Ktla anchors and reporters are sharing heartfelt tributes to Chris Burrous, Ktla 5’s Morning News reporter and anchor who died Thursday at 43.
Anchor Dayna Devon, who worked with Burrous on weekends, tearfully remembered her colleague as “a true genius..he just got it.” You can watch the video above.
Christina Pascucci wrote on Instagram, “This morning he was supposed to be sitting next to me.” “I keep thinking ‘what would Chris do’ in this situation,” Pascucci wrote. “Chris, we will do our best to honor you today and always in every assignment, but nobody does it like you.”
Anchor Chris Schauble tweeted that Burrous was a multi-faceted talent. “No one has his amazing range. Unmatched as a proud husband & father. Right now he’s telling the angels where to find the best food.”
.@chrisburrous is the hardest working/most talented person @ktla.

There used to be a term for people like Chris Burrous, the Ktla news anchor and field reporter who died Thursday at age 43. This term pretty much disappeared when everyone with WiFi and a WordPress blog site considered themselves a communicator. The term is “citizen journalist,” and that’s what Chris Burrous was, and that’s why he will be missed.
Chris was the weekend anchor at Ktla, a Los Angeles-based TV station whose morning news became a juggernaut in content delivery. The news was personality driven, and Chris’ place in the motley crew that occupied living rooms, kitchens and cars every morning was a testament to brilliant programming. He was like the kid brother whose role was eclipsed by the more stalwart, fame-familiar older siblings, and that’s the feeling I got about him when I watched him anchor.
Such is the role of the second-string star whose adeptness...

The Kardashian kids may have an enviably glamorous life, but it must not feel that unusual if you were born into it! Kim Kardashian revealed that her kids actually don't know that their family is famous, despite the over-the-top birthday parties and constant cameras following them around! "It's pretty intense, but like at home I'm not known," Kim told Sam Rubin on ITV's This Morning , when he asked how it feels to be so over-the-top famous. Kim says her children don't see her as anything special (besides mommy) and, in turn, they don't have an idea of how well-known they are, either. "Like my kids have no clue what's going on," she continued. "So, I don't really feel it, I spend most of my time at home, so, I mean, obviously I get it, I know it." It sounds like her family's ongoing closeness and realness is what keeps them grounded,...
