Bruce Springsteen closed out his three-episode residency on The Tonight Show Wednesday with a soulful rendition of “Nightshift,” off his new covers LP Only the Strong Survive.
Backed by the same powerhouse band that accompanied him for the previous night’s performances, Springsteen delivered his take on the Commodores’ 1985 classic, a tribute to soul legends Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. The single is the “newest” recording featured on Only the Strong Survive, which is mostly comprised of R&b singles from the Sixties and Seventies.

Bruce Springsteen’s soul covers record Only The Strong Survive lands November 11, and he’s just shared a video for “Don’t Play That Song,” which you can check out right here.
The 1962 song was written by Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun and Betty Nelson, the wife of Ben E. King. The original rendition was released by King on his 1962 LP Don’t Play That Song!, but the most memorable rendition arrived in 1970 when Aretha Franklin covered it on her album Spirit in the Dark. Bruce Springsteen has shared the video for his cover of the 1985 Commodores hit “Nightshift,” which will appear on his upcoming soul covers LP Only the Strong Survive, out November 11.
Commodores wrote the song a few years after parting ways with Lionel Richie to honor the memories of Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. The soul icons died just months apart the previous year. It was the group’s final Top 40 hit.

A new Leon Bridges song will premiere in the final episode of Season 2 of HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and be featured on the second soundtrack for the series.
“He had great timing,” says music supervisor Simon Astall. “We got this demo for a song that’s going to be on his next album and it worked in episode seven.”
Titled “That Was Yesterday,” its placement is part of the producers’ use of songs and specific artists as a connective tissue from season to season and even episode to episode. It’s the music of Charles Bradley and Ann Pebbles, the sound of Janis Joplin, and songs such as Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” that work their way into multiple episodes. Sunday night’s episode closed with a show-commissioned cover of Timmy Thomas’ “Why Can’t We Live Together” by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James...

Following a long struggle with cancer Robin Gibb has passed away, aged 62.
Robin was one of three Gibb brothers who formed the Bee Gees in 1958. Robin, Maurice and Barry released 22 studio albums throughout their career and won numerous Grammy awards. Their soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever won 5 Grammys alone and their soundtrack to Staying Alive was awards lauded and has now become iconic with that era of music. The group wrote and produced all of their own music as well as hits for other artists.
Born in the Isle of Man before moving to Manchester and then Australia, The Bee Gees had two distinct periods of success; early on in the career as a pop act and from the mid seventies onwards as a preeminent Disco act. Their songwriting credits also include Diana Ross, Jimmy Ruffin, Tina Turner, Destiny’s Child, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers amongst others.

On Sunday night's Grammy Awards, Jennifer Hudson paid tribute to the late Whitney Houston, who was found dead a day earlier in Beverly Hills, by delivering a teary-eyed rendition of her most famous song, "I Will Always Love You." What many do not know is that "Love You" is a tune with a long and interesting musical history that dates back to 1974 and has a connection to the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley.
"I Will Always Love you" was written by country superstar Dolly Parton on June 6, 1974, as the second single from Parton's 13th solo studio album, Jolene. That's right, by 1974, Dolly Parton had already released 13 albums. And it may interest fans of the song to know that while "I...

We’ve just received information that the world premiere of the brand new Michael Jackson biopic, is set to take place right in here in London. To celebrate, we’ve been given this brand new clip from the movie which is introduced by legendary music Producer and friend to the Jackson family, David Gest.
Following the announcement, we get to see a new clip from the movie entitled He Went to a New Level which I’ve placed in the video embedded below. When you see the clip you just scratch the surface of the impact that he made on the world. I was astonished at some of the clips seeing just a few of the people he met.
I’ve also placed the press release that we have been sent with full details on the World Premiere which is set to take place on November 2nd 2011 at the Empire Leicester Square.

In the midst of one of the biggest music festivals in the world, Bob Forrest wanted the music to be shut off. "Look at this fucking thing that's going on," he asks me, gazing back in the direction of Austin's infamous 6th Street. He laughs, "Do you want to be over there in that fucking thing?"
Though Forrest is still an active musician, there was a time when he was right in the middle of the fray. As the frontman of Thelonious Monster, he came up with a group of Los Angeles bands including the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone (also the subject of an excellent documentary at SXSW called "Everyday Sunshine") that ruled the L.A. scene in the early '80s with a sound that found the rhythm in chaos described as "drunk rock" by one critic. Even though the judges predicted that a female would win this season, women are quickly becoming an endangered species on "American Idol." Last night's ouster of a teary-eyed Didi Benami leaves the ladies with just three representatives: Crystal Bowersox, Siobhan Magnus and Katie Stevens (who's slummed it in the bottom-three for two straight weeks and is in serious danger during next week's Lennon/McCartney-themed show).
Yet while we mourn the passing of yet another "Idol" lady, we can't say we didn't see this coming. Didi ditched what everyone thought was her gal-with-a-guitar wheelhouse (on display during tunes like Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon") and became a fragile crooner with no defined identity. Last week's head-scratching rendition of Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good" had our resident "Idol" guru Jim Cantiello wondering if Didi had embraced "performance art [as] a defense mechanism against her stage fright." We might never know the answer,...

And then there were nine.
Following the Top 10 performances Tuesday night, it was fairly clear that Katie Stevens, Didi Benami and Tim Urban belonged in the final three - and they ended up there.
Slightly surprising? That Didi was voted off instead of Tim, who's been as bad as it gets. Not to say Didi didn't have it coming herself after an "overdone" effort Tuesday.
Her rendition of the Jimmy Ruffin hit "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" was one that the judges called "off-melody." Never a good sign on ... a singing competition.
So Didi's elimination leaves nine, among them Urban and Katie Stevens, who joined them in the bottom three last night and is another prime candidate for elimination.
Next week? The John Lennon and Paul McCartney catalog. Expect Crystal, Mike and Lee to deliver as usual. The rest of the gang has been hit or miss, but you never know.

Didi Benami did not survive both the third week of big stage and the last chance to impress the judges. The 23-year-old from Knoxville, Tennessee was sent packing in R 'n' B week after Simon Cowell and co. refused to use the judges' save to keep her in the competition although the studio audience wanted them to.
Mentored by Usher, Didi sang a rendition of Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" on Tuesday, March 30 night. "It was like swimming in jelly," Cowell said, adding it was over-the-top, old-fashioned and off melody.
Didi was in the bottom three with Tim Urban and Katie Stevens. However, Katie was declared safe from the bottom two, leaving Didi and Tim to find out their fate. It turned out Tim, who was also panned by the judges for his version of Anita Baker's "Sweet Love", has bigger fan base than Didi.

The Top 10 sang soul and R&B songs Tuesday night on "American Idol." Who won rave reviews and who left the judges less than enthused? We've got the full recap! One by one the Top 10 took the stage looking to impress the judges and their celeb mentor this week, Usher, who also was in the house. Siobhan Magnus kicked things off with Chaka Khan's "Through the Fire." Randy Jackson called the performance "kind of rough" and said, "I don't know if this was one of your shining moments, but I still love the courageousness and the conviction." Ellen DeGeneres agreed, and Kara DioGuardi suggested that Siobhan had simply had an off-night. Then Simon Cowell leveled, "It sounded to me as if you'd run a marathon and you were singing while you were running out of breath. It was so all over the place." Casey James jammed away on an...

"American Idol" finalist Didi Benami might be pretty broken hearted after her Top 10 performance.
The 1966 hit by Jimmy Ruffin was, ahem, pretty rough for Didi Benami. It didn't suit her voice one bit and while we admire her choosing something that means something to her, she should probably pack her bags.

What did you guys think? Will Didi stick around? There were other not-so-hot performances but we think Didi really took the cake tonight. Plus, the voters were probably too blinded by her sparkly dress to read her phone number off the screen.

What should the "American Idol" Top 10 sing for the R&B/Soul week? Make your picks here.
Even though Usher kinda spilled the "Idol" mentoring beans over the weekend, it was officially announced during the Wednesday, March 24 results show that he would be mentoring the Top 10 for R&B/Soul week.
We love that R&B/Soul reaches way back into Motown because some of the non-Michael Lynche singers need some oldies thrown in there.
The song list is available here, but here is the whole list:

Spotted in the audience seat are the three finalists, Alexis Grace, Michael Sarver and Danny Gokey, who have advanced to the next round through last week's live votes.
