KPop Demon Hunters May’ve Hid an Alice in Wonderland Tribute in Plain Sight
Image
Netflix‘s breakout animated hit KPop Demon Hunters may contain a hidden tribute to Alice in Wonderland. Yumyan, aka the Derpy Tiger, the feline companion of Jinu, shares several striking similarities with Cheshire Cat from Tim Burton’s 2010 movie Alice in Wonderland. The parallels suggest that the character may be a subtle homage to Lewis Carroll’s world of Wonderland.

Like Cheshire Cat, Derpy is a large, non-verbal, feline creature. It was initially aligned with the antagonist side, but later reveals a loyal side. In Alice, the Cheshire Cat is a beast controlled by the Red Queen. After Alice shows kindness, she becomes an ally. Similarly, Derpy is introduced as a courier working for Jinu, the leader of the demon boy group Saja Boys.

He is dim-witted but fiercely loyal. In one scene, he offers Rumi’s bracelet to his master Jinu and tries to remind him of his humanity...

Is Celine from KPop Demon Hunters a true villain? The answer is complicated
Image
One of the biggest aspects that draws people to Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters is how it deals with heavy themes. Discussing shame and acceptance can sometimes be too dark for a movie targeted to kids, but KPop Demon Hunters brilliantly weaves these themes throughout the bright colors and catchy tunes.

But one character is under fire for how she handles the darkness mixed with the light.

Celine (Yunjin Kim) is the mentor and mother figure of the K-Pop girls' band, Huntr/X. She was one of the demon hunters/K-Pop stars of her generation, and she taught Rumi, Mira, and Zoey everything she knew. The only problem? Everything she knew was about hiding any imperfections and weaknesses. In Celine's mind, that was the only way to be strong enough to defeat all the demons. But things get complicated when the girl Celine raised like a daughter, Rumi, is half-demon.

Locarno’s Alliance 4 Development Lineup to Feature Feminist Take on ‘Kamasutra,’ Mystery in Chocolate Factory and ‘Spark of Poetry’
Image
There are plenty of surprises waiting for those brave enough to take a closer look at Locarno’s Alliance 4 Development initiative – including a “feminist take on ‘Kamasutra’,” as promised by directors Maria Kaur Bedi and Satindar Singh Bedi.

Their film “3rd Eye of Shiva” will be “bold, sensual and ironic,” they said, talking about the story of a student deciding to rewrite the famous manual from a whole different perspective. “We challenge taboos around female sexuality through a visually rich Bollywood-style dramedy. This film is a personal and political journey for us: a cinematic act of love, rebellion, and reimagination.”

Mysteries will have to be solved too, starting with Valentin Merz’s “Dark Chocolate” where a young worker in a chocolate factory faces a mysterious disease threatening the cacao supply – while his own identity also begins to mutate. Meanwhile, eerie creatures lurk in the city streets, waiting.

“It’s shaped...

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Becomes No. 4 Most-Watched English Language Netflix Movie of All Time, Securing 158 Million Views
Image
“KPop Demon Hunters” made Netflix history during the week of July 28, becoming the streamer’s fourth most-watched English-language movie to date. In the seven weeks since its debut, the action musical secured 158.8 million views.

The animated movie from Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans has now been more widely watched in its first 90 days than Ryan Reynolds and Jennifer Garner’s “The Adam Project,” Sandra Bullock’s “Bird Box,” Cameron Diaz and Jaime Foxx’s “Back in Action,” Sam Esmail’s “Leave the World Behind,” Ryan Gosling’s “The Gray Man,” Millie Bobby Brown’s “Damsel” and Robert Rodriguez’s “We Can Be Heroes.” It also bumped “We Can Be Heroes” out of Netflix’s top 10 most popular English-language movies list.

And since the 90-day cutoff for “KPop Demon Hunters” won’t happen until mid-September, chances are high that ranking will only be going up, up, up.

Despite the success of Netflix’s latest hit,...

How Two Songwriters From K-Pop and Musical Theater Built This Summer’s Surprise Chart Smash
Image
When songwriters Mark Sonnenblick and Ejae were first contacted to work on Netflix’s ambitious animated musical KPop Demon Hunters, the two thought it would be a fun and unique project to add to their musical résumés. A madcap animated film following a K-pop girl group that moonlights as the mystical destroyers of an invisible demon realm — what’s bolder than that?

But now, five weeks after KPop Demon Hunters’ Netflix premiere, the film has skyrocketed to take the title of the streaming platform’s most-watched animated film ever. As for the music,...

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Review: Netflix’s Surprise Smash Is a Dazzlingly Animated, Infectiously Soundtracked Treat
Image
K-pop has become such a global music phenomenon that it’s a wonder its groups haven’t been tapped to star in more Hollywood movies. Netflix has somewhat rectified that with an animated musical that has seemingly come out of nowhere to become one of its most popular offerings ever (take that, Adam Sandler).

It’s not hard to see why. KPop Demon Hunters delivers not only a cornucopia of earworms whose melodies will be lingering in your brain for weeks, but also a fast and funny genre mash-up that puts most theatrical animated releases to shame. Considering that the accompanying soundtrack album has been conquering the charts as well, sequels are all but inevitable.

The titular heroes are the superstar girl group Huntr/x (be advised that’s the last time I’ll be typing that name), consisting of Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong) and Zooey (Ji-young Yoo...

KPop Demon Hunters Faces AI Controversy As Song Gets Vulgar Twist – Legal Action On The Way! (Photo Credit – Netflix)

Netflix’s latest original animated film, KPop Demon Hunters, has gotten entangled in a new controversy. While the movie was earning all the massive achievements from topping the Netflix charts to becoming the most-watched animated film, it has now faced a controversy where one of the soundtracks of the movie has been AI-altered with sexually explicit lyrics. The altered version has been circulating on various social media platforms, including YouTube and online communities.

For those who don’t know, the film is about a girl group named Huntrix, who are K-pop stars by day and demon slayers by night. However, when they meet the demon boy band, the Saja Boys, they face a lot of trouble. One of the tracks that Saja Boys sang in the film, Soda Pop, has now been manipulated with vulgar lyrics.

They sing. They dance. They kick demon ass so well that KPop Demon Hunters have become a global phenomenon. So much so that Netflix is already eyeing sequels and more.

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Review (Netflix)
Image
Features the voices of: Arden Cho, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo | Written and Directed by Chris Appelhans, Maggie Kang

When it comes to film titles, conversations are often shared about misleading examples. For instance, Paddy Considine’s Tyrannosaur is nothing like one would expect from the title alone. A fascinating conversation can be had about the inverse, where a title tells you everything that you need to know about the film. In that regard, KPop Demon Hunters is a film that does exactly what it says on the tin.

The story follows K-Pop superstars Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo). As the girl group, Huntr/x, they sell out stadiums and perform to their legions of fans. Behind the scenes, the trio fight demons to protect humanity, with their growing fandom invigorating the group’s abilities.

Not Even Madea Can Take the Streaming Crown From This 96% Rotten Tomatoes Must-Watch Adventure on Netflix

Tyler Perry (Sistas) has proven himself as a valuable asset to Netflix. Just recently, the comedian and filmmaker managed to take over the streamer's charts with the surprise hit movie Straw, which dominated the global Top 10 and accumulated millions of views. It was pretty safe to say that the new installment of the Madeafranchise, Madea's Destination Wedding, would be a top performer – and it was. The new movie just didn't count on a dark horse that is quickly becoming one of Netflix's biggest hits ever: KPop Demon Hunters.

This past week, the animated movie continued its winning streak among the Netflix Top 10 globally. Ever since it premiered, the movie has ranked among the most-watched titles on the platform, and this week it added 24 million views to its total – which, at 80 million views, makes it one of Netflix's biggest animated movies ever. In addition to a surprising performance on Netflix, the...

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Built a Soundtrack to Slay Global Pop Charts
Image
In Netflix’s original animated musical film “KPop Demon Hunters,” the trio that make up fictional K-pop band Huntr/x — Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) — rule the pop charts when they’re not working in their true calling as demon hunters. Worlds collide, though, when the Saja Boys, a new, competing boy band, reveal themselves to also be demons, with the girls being the only hope to take them down.

But this film, from directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, knows something about taking out the competition since that’s what it’s been doing since it premiered on June 20 on the streamer. Based on Netflix’s data for the week ending July 13, “KPop Demon Hunters” has spent four weeks in the Netflix Global Top 10 (English) with 40,400,000 hours viewed and just reclaimed the #1 spot after being bumped from #1 to #2 last week by the release of...

Maggie Kang’s directorial animated film, KPop Demon Hunters, which was released on June 20, 2025, continues to break records in every sector. The movie’s soundtrack has reached greater heights and earned a spot on the Billboard 200. If you don’t know the storyline, Netflix’s animated film revolves around a girl band named Huntrix that consists of three girls – Rumi, Mira, and Zoey – who are pop stars by day and demon slayers by night.

Set in an alternate version of South Korea, when these K-pop idols faced a demon group, The Saja Boys, led by Jinu, things get a little messier for Huntrix. Apart from having a unique storyline, the film has a fantastic album of songs, including How It’s Done, Golden, Soda Pop, Your Idol, Takedown, and Free. These soundtracks have been attracting...

Why Saja Boys Characters In KPop Demon Hunters Weren't As Fleshed Out As Jinu Explained By Director
Image
KPop Demon Hunters features the villainously endearing demon K-pop boy band called the Saja Boys, but only one of them gets any real character development. KPop Demon Hunters' story is actually about the girl group Huntr/x, who are demon hunters as well as singers, and how the Saja Boys arise to combat them on behalf of Gwi-Ma (Lee Byung-hun), the demon king.

Because the Honmoon, the magical ward protecting the world from demons, is powered by Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey's (Ji-young Yoo) voices and their fans' appreciation for their music, a group of ambitious demons propose to Gwi-Ma that becoming a rival musical group is their best move. The group is led by Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop), a more nuanced and sympathetic character.

While Jinu's tragic backstory is explored, and he offers some emotional support to Rumi, who is struggling to accept her own demon heritage,...

Rumi's Mystery Powers In KPop Demon Hunters Addressed By Director: "Like Neo At The End Of The Matrix"
Image
KPop Demon Hunters is primarily about Arden Cho's Rumi, a half-human, half-demon hunter and K-pop singer of immense power and skill. KPop Demon Hunters' great reviews are due to its concentration on telling a clean, effective story, which, for its first outing, didn't leave too much time to explore Rumi's powers.

However, one of the directors of the new hit Netflix movie has teased that Rumi's capabilities are tumultuous, and have not seen their end. Like her fellow hunters Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), Rumi is skilled in combat and helps shield the Earth with the power of her voice — but her demon heritage means her powers likely go further.

Via Reddit, KPop Demon Hunters co-director Maggie Kang essentially confirmed that we have not seen the full extent of Rumi's powers, which she likens to the inexplicable well of Neo's abilities in The Matrix. Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop...

Plot: A world-renowned K-pop girl group, Huntr/X, balances their lives in the spotlight with their secret identities as demon hunters.

Review: If you’re a Netflix subscriber, the best animated movie of the year (so far) is within your grasp. KPop Demon Hunters is a perfect storm of sight, song, character chemistry, color, and emotion. It’s The Powerpuff Girls meets Blackpink. It’s a kaleidoscope of colors effortlessly rotating from bright to dark in tune to a soundtrack of genuine bangers. It’s another shot in the arm from Sony Pictures Animation, the studio that changed the game by releasing the ground-breaking film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Co-directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Applehans, the film focuses on Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), a trifecta of demon hunters disguised as the K-pop girl group Huntr/X. As a trio, their voices lend power...

KPop Demon Hunters Rumored Director's Cut Gets Definitive Response From Director
Image
Rumors have been circling about more of KPop Demon Hunters, including those pertaining to a potential director's cut, but one of the new movie's directors was confused by this discourse. Since the movie took over Netflix and KPop Demon Hunters' ending set up a sequel, people have naturally been wondering what is next for the budding franchise.

Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) have no more secrets after Rumi's demon heritage was disastrously revealed, but Huntr/x reconciled and saved the world from a demon invasion.KPop Demon Hunters' reviews reflect how it is a well-paced musical spectacle, but people still ask if there could be more.

During an Ama session on Reddit, KPop Demon Hunters co-director Maggie Kang addressed the director's cut rumors, definitively shutting this theory down. Kang wasn't sure where the idea even originated since they "work on one cut of the movie,...

At the center of Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters are a trio of young women, whom many can relate to, though viewers may not know their exact ages. However, one of the directors of the streaming hit recently answered any questions fans might have about who is the oldest of the fictional demon-fighting K-pop group Huntr/x.

Best friends Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) have all found happiness and support in each other, which they didn't have before. In an Ama session on Reddit, KPop Demon Hunters co-director Maggie Kang confirmed what she believes to be Rumi, Mira, and Zoey’s ages, to enthusiastic responses about characters being depicted in their 20s.

‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ Review: Netflix’s Breakout Hit is a Total Crowdpleaser
Image
One year after “Brat Summer,” Chappell Roan’s rise to stardom, and a full six-month period where the lyrics “That’s that me espresso” were stuck in every American’s head, 2025 pop music has proven disappointingly ordinary. With the charts staler than ever and little new releases to enjoy on the horizon, pop excellence has to be found in unconventional places.

Enter: Huntr/x, a K-pop trio with banging leather outfits and a likable lineup that slots into the classic “Powerpuff Girls” mold: there’s the childish and sweet “Bubbles” type Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), the tough and sarcastic “Buttercup” type Mira (May Hong), and the “Blossom”-esque earnest type-a leader Rumi (Arden Cho). Since June, the group has blown up in America with an album at No. 3 on Billboard and a hit single climbing up the Hot 100. It’s a particularly impressive feat for a group that isn’t actually “real,...

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Cannot Be Stopped on the Charts
Image
The love for KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix’s latest animated film, and its soundtrack, only seems to be growing.

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, Demon Hunters follows Huntrix members Rumi, Mira and Zoey as they perform undeniably catchy K-pop tracks by day and battle demons by night. The girls spend the film facing off against a newly formed boy band, Saja Boys, a group of secret demons who are using their popularity to steal souls.

The movie, which returned to the top of Netflix’s U.S. movie top 10, has perhaps found its biggest impact in the form of its soundtrack. The compilation of mostly original songs has taken real-world music charts by storm.

The song’s lead single, “Golden,” sung by the girl group Huntrix (Ejae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami), hit No. 1 on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs Global Chart on Thursday — it remained in the top spot in the U.

KPop Demon Hunters Sets A Major Record As Netflix Eyes Award Potential
Image
KPop Demon Hunters, as a movie, has proven to be a huge streaming success for Netflix, but its musical status is raising it even higher. The animated fantasy adventure inspired by K-pop and Korean mythology follows a K-pop girl group, who double as demon hunters, using the power of their voices to shield humanity.

While the movie continues to trend on Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters' soundtrack is just as popular on music platforms. Highlights include "Golden" and "What It Sounds Like," both of which illustrate the insecurities and fear experienced by Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young-Yoo), and how they overcome them.

KPop Demon Hunters' soundtrack hit new milestones this past week, as fictional demon boy band The Saja Boys' track "Your Idol" reached No. 2 on Spotify's U.S. ranking on July 3, making it the highest-charting track by a K-pop boy group ever, surpassing BTS's "Dynamite" (via Vulture).

Meanwhile,...

Netflix's Fake K-Pop Groups Are Shattering Streaming Records - Here's Why It's A Big Deal
Image
As South Korean pop culture continues to dominate the globe, the Netflix animated movie "KPop Demon Hunters" effectively blends influences and leans into the international appeal of Korean entertainment. Mixing energetic pop songs with K-drama storytelling stakes, the movie has topped Netflix's streaming charts and proven original animation can still thrive. Beyond the film's streaming success, however, the production's soundtrack is also breaking records, with its major single "Golden" now up for awards consideration. This breathtaking popularity on multiple fronts is a clear testament to the growing ubiquity of South Korean entertainment worldwide and signals the country's cultural spread is only gaining momentum.

For the uninitiated, "KPop Demon Hunters" is an animated musical about a K-pop girl group that hunts demons, as the title suggests. The story focuses on Huntr/x, a girl group enjoying global success while also secretly hunting demons and using their musical abilities to maintain a magical barrier protecting the world.

KPop Demon Hunters Director Has A Hopeful Update About A Sequel On Netflix
Image
"KPop Demon Hunters" topping the Netflix charts is one of 2025's most surprising success stories. With animation recently stumbling at the box office and live-action remakes (ranging from "How to Train Your Dragon" to various Disney titles) being all of the rage, it seems that original animation has taken a backseat. However, the success of Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans' movie proves that there is still an appetite for unique storytelling out there -- but will its success lead to a sequel?

As the title implies, "KPop Demon Hunters" is a musical about a girl group that takes on evil, otherworldly creatures. The story centers on a trio known as Huntr/X -- Rumi (Arden Cho/Ejae), Mira (May Hong/Audrey Nuna), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo/Rei Ami) -- as they use their musical gifts to achieve global superstardom and keep the Honmoon barrier sealed. That said, demons are tricky...

“Golden” Moment: How ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Created the Year’s Catchiest Soundtrack
Image
It was a night K-Pop fans around the world wouldn’t forget: Superstar groups Huntrix and Saja Boys would go head to head at this year’s International Idol Awards.

There was only one catch: the International Idol Awards aren’t real — and neither are those groups. Both groups can be seen in Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, a slick animated feature that chronicles the adventures of Huntrix, a girl group comprised of three members who just happen to also fight monsters from the underworld. While the film has become the streamers latest surprise hit, even more surprising is the fact that its soundtrack has taken the real-world internet, and music charts, by storm.

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, Demon Hunters follows Huntrix members Rumi, Mira and Zoey as they perform undeniably catchy K-pop tracks by day and battle demons by night. The girls spend the film facing...
