Chuck Russell is a genre legend. He wrote the screenplay for Dreamscape (1984). He co-wrote and directed A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), which redeemed the Nightmare franchise after the critical drubbing of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985). He directed The Blob (1988), one of the greatest remakes of anything ever, co-writing the screeplay with none other than Frank Darabont. He co-wrote and directed The Mask (1994), which solidified Jim Carrey's place as a king of comedy. All these films featured groundbreaking effects. When I think of the fun times I had in movie theaters throughout the 1980s and early 90s, Chuck Russell’s...

Producer David S. Goyer provides an update on The Blobremake. The first ever version of this horror classic was released in 1958. Starring Steve McQueen, this B-horror film focused on an alien life form that consumes everything in its bath and continuously grows.
The Blob was later remade into a 1988 body horror film directed by Chuck Russell and starring Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith. Early last year, a new remake horror film was announced to be in development by Warner Bros. The film will be directed by David Bruckner of the Hellraiser remake fame.
While in an interview with Comicbook.com, The Blob producer Goyer shared a significant update on the remake film's progress. He began by explaining that some major changes were being made to The Blob, including changing the antagonistic substance's point of origin from space to "something that is made in the lab."
To make that transition, Goyer and Warner Bros.

One of my most prized possessions is a poster of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors signed by Robert Englund, so to say that I was excited to talk with Chuck Russell, the director behind the Freddy Krueger film that got me rockin' with Dokken, is an understatement.
No stranger to adding his own unique flavor to beloved franchises with his work on the third Elm Street film, the 1988 remake of The Blob, and The Mummy prequel The Scorpion King (and I would also be remiss to not mention his groundbreaking work on The Mask), Chuck Russell has made his anticipated return to horror with a reimagining of Kevin Tenney's Witchboard.

If you thought that the first trailer for Witchboard was pretty good, wait until you see the red-band trailer for the remake of the 80s cult favorite, because it's even better. Hitting theaters on August 15, this updated version looks nothing like the 1986 original, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it takes things to a whole other level to deliver a horror movie that you won't soon forget.
While the new red-band trailer (seen below) does have a lot of the same imagery as the first one that was released a few weeks ago, this one is a heck of a lot bloodier, as we see things like a cat eating a severed hand, someone's throat being cut, and the pièce de résistance: someone ripping their face off to expose all the muscle and sinew that lies underneath. There's also a lot more sexuality, which was really only hinted at the first time around.

‘Witchboard’ – Red Band Trailer for Chuck Russell’s Remake Peels Off Faces and Spills a Lot of Blood
Now this is what we’re talking about. A much better Red Band trailer for director Chuck Russell’s horror return Witchboard was debuted by Collider, and this one is finally starting to feel like a horror flick from the director of Dream Warriors, The Blob, and… The Mask!
Yes, Chuck Russell directed all of the above films, and yes, we’re talking about The Mask starring Jim Carrey. Speaking of which, a dude’s face gets peeled off like a mask in the new Red Band trailer for the Witchboard remake, which we invite you to check out down below.
Look for Witchboard to release in theaters on August 15, 2025. The new film is set in present day New Orleans and centers on “a cursed artifact unleashes a vengeful witch, drawing a young couple into a deadly spiral of possession, temptation, and occult terror.”

On August 15, an evil unlike any other will be unleashed — but why wait until then when you can get a taste of it right now? Today, Collider is thrilled to debut the exclusive Red Band trailer for the upcoming supernatural horror flick, Witchboard, which puts A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors helmer, Chuck Russell, back in the genre for a truly one-of-a-kind feature. Serving as a remake of Kevin Tenny’s 1986 film of the same name, the plot might look familiar, but comparing the two will certainly show the original’s age when it comes to clarity and effects. Writer-director Larry Cohen’s The Stuff takes aim at consumerism, advertising, and right-wing paranoia, and though high on the gore quotient, it isn’t really a horror movie. Using its high-concept sci-fi premise—an evil corporation mass markets a sentient yogurt-like product that slowly takes over its consumer’s mind and body—to ground its supercharged satire, The Stuff is the Catch-22 of alien-invasion movies, made three years before Chuck Russell’s remake of Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr.’s The Blob. Only here the threat comes bubbling up through the ground rather than from beyond the stars.
In the early stages of its takeover, the Stuff proves highly addictive, playing on the notion that corporations knowingly peddle harmful products to unsuspecting consumers. It also points out that consumerism itself is akin to addiction. Hooked users end up being known as “Stuffies.” Throughout, Cohen takes on the glib superficiality of contemporary advertising,...

The return of director Chuck Russell to horror feels like an event. Decades after he defined a certain brand of spectacular, practical-effects-driven horror with classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and his gooey remake of The Blob, he steps back into the genre with Witchboard.
This is not a direct continuation but a complete reimagining of the 1980s slumber party staple. Russell swaps the familiar for a grander, stranger mythology. The film sets its stage in the atmospheric French Quarter of New Orleans, where we meet Emily (Madison Iseman) and Christian (Aaron Dominguez), an ambitious young couple pouring their life savings into opening a new Creole restaurant.
Their dreams take a dark turn when Emily, foraging for ingredients in the woods, unearths an ancient pendulum board. What begins as a fascination with the ornate object quickly descends into a dangerous obsession, awakening a malevolent power that has been dormant for centuries.

When it comes to classic horror franchises, few are as iconic and timeless as A Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddy has been the ghoul, the playful demon, the jokester, and the sadistic maniac. But for most viewers, he's the slasher killer that we can't help but cheer for whenever he does his usual stuff. Well, as it turns out, now we have something more to cheer about: Freddy is set to receive an awesome 4K release that'll bring your nightmares to life.

Over forty years after its source material was first published, Neuromanceris finally coming online. Apple TV+ announced that the long-awaited cyberpunk science fiction adaptation has entered production in a new teaser clip. No release date for the series has yet been announced. The series will be an adaptation of William Gibson's seminal 1984 novel, which essentially birthed the entire cyberpunk genre. Many attempts at adapting the novel for the screen have been made, but Apple, whose Macintosh personal computer was likewise first released in 1984, will be the first one to successfully crack the code.
In the teaser, a bar slowly comes to life, its lights and arcade machines switching on, before a neon sign buzzes to life, revealing that the bar is the Chatsubo, the Chiba City lounge that is a key location in the novel. It then announces that the series, which was first greenlit in early 2024, is now in production.

Hold onto your hats, horror fans, because the new trailer for the Witchboard remake is finally here, and it's nothing like the beloved 80s cult-classic. Directed by Chuck Russell, this version promises to deliver a whole new experience that's light on laughs, and heavy on supernatural thrills.
Featuring Madison Iseman (star of the USA Network's upcoming adaptation of John Grisham's The Rainmaker), the Witchboard trailer kicks off with a bang, showcasing not the Ouija board that was at the heart of the 1986 film, but a pendulum board, which, we guess is kind of scary? "There are powerful forces at play," says Jamie Campbell Bower's character of Alexander Babtiste shortly thereafter as we're treated to some erotic scenes before Iseman is assaulted by disembodied hands coming up from her mattress to grab her. Kind of cliché, but not bad. From there, the trailer descends into an all-out assault on the senses,...

In the early ’90s, I rode my bike to Van Lee’s Video, a local video rental store. In the back of the shop, a darkened room housed the horror section and two arcade cabinets: Street Fighter II: Championship Edition and Mortal Kombat II. It’s where all the cool kids would hang out. Surrounded by familiar faces like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, movies like Waxwork, Evil Toons, Phantasm, and others lined the slotted, mirrored walls. Among the collection was Kevin Tenney’s Witchboard, the type of horror movie you watched when your parents weren’t around. Of all the cultural legacies that the 1990s have left us, one of the most dubious is the trend of offering contests and sweepstakes that either have no prize or were made to never be won. When the story surrounding the McMillions scandal broke in 2018, many a '90s kid was both nostalgic and insulted to discover that the Monopoly peel-and-win game presented by McDonald's restaurants had been a cleverly rigged scam. The story was potent enough to draw some attention from Hollywood, and while a proposed film version from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon has yet to materialize, the scandal was covered in an HBO docuseries, "McMillion$" in 2020.
Never mind board games; some of the most notorious no-prize contests came from the world of video games and cinema. A fair number of these weren't rigged scams like the Monopoly scandal, but rather victims of abandoned projects or bankrupt corporations.

Jim Carrey in the 1990s was a force to be reckoned with. The decade gave fans some of Carrey's best comedic works, including Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, The Cable Guy (which is kind of a comedy), and Liar Liar, along with more dramatic roles like The Truman Show and Man on the Moon. Amid all of those movies, Carrey also starred in two comic book adaptations. His most popular was Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever, in which he played The Riddler. But, Carrey also starred in an adaptation of a far lesser-known comic book, The Mask, and it's recently gained a second life on streaming.
The Mask is currently streaming on Prime Video, and the film is the 10th most popular movie of the week. Viola Davis' G20 still holds the top spot, with Conclave sitting in second following the recent passing of Pope Francis, and The Accountant...

Jim Carrey is one of the most popular comedic actors, and he has starred in many beloved films throughout his career. Carrey has played leading characters, villains, and even a superhero in The Mask, which is now becoming a hit online.

Judith Parker Harris, the president and CEO of Worldwide Entertainment Corp., the home of the 1958 sci-fi classic The Blob that featured Steve McQueen in his big-screen debut, has died. She was 74.
Parker Harris died March 31 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a long battle with multiple sclerosis, a publicist announced.
The Blob, directed by Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. at Paramount, revolved around an oozing, amoeba-like alien that crashes on Earth in a meteorite, then grows as it sucks up people and menaces a small town in Pennsylvania.
The movie, made for just $110,000 and produced by Parker Harris’ future husband, Jack H. Harris, went on to gross more than $3 million.
The Blob spawned a 1972 sequel — directed by Larry Hagman — and, a year after she wed Harris, a big-budget 1988 reboot that was helmed by Chuck Russell and released by TriStar Pictures. There’s another Blob film in the works, to...

One of Jim Carrey's best movies has just received a smokin' hot update courtesy of New Line president and Cco Richard Brener. The studio head hinted that a remake of The Maskwouldbe considered if certain conditions were met. This news is likely to incite jaw-dropping, eye-popping reactions from fans of the original movie's titular green trickster, as many have hoped to see an R-rated take on the 1994 comedy, drawing more gory goodness from its source material and reintroducing a more comic-accurate version of the story into the mainstream.
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Brener was asked outright whether New Line, the distributor of the original big-screen Carrey classic, would ever be interested in a remake of The Mask. He suggested that it could happen, but there would be a few important stipulations for the project to get the green light. The requirements he outlined include getting...

Forty years ago, author William Gibson brought the world a cyberpunk novel called Neuromancer – and an adaptation of that story has been trudging its way through development hell pretty much ever since. Versions of a feature film adaptation have passed through the hands of directors like music video maker Chris Cunningham, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob‘s Chuck Russell, Torque‘s Joseph Kahn, Cube‘s Vincenzo Natali, and Deadpool‘s Tim Miller. An adaptation of Neuromancer is currently moving forward as a 10-episode series that’s set up at Apple TV+, and Deadline reports that Dane DeHaan of Oppenheimer and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has signed on to play a character named Peter Riviera.

John Travolta has frequently strayed from one genre into another, switching from comedy roles in movies such as Look Who’s Talking, to bloody and violent action movies like Pulp Fiction with surprising ease. One of the latter varieties came in the 2016 vigilante movie, I Am Wrath, which saw Travolta on the trail of revenge and is currently finding renewed interest on free streaming despite its dismal critical reviews.
Directed by Chuck Russell, known for The Mask and Eraser, I Am Wrath wants to deliver some high-octane action with Travolta playing Stanley Hill, an ordinary man who snaps after witnessing his wife’s murder and then watching a corrupt system let her killers off the hook. Rather than sink into a maudlin cloud of depression and disillusionment, Hill rediscovers a deadly streak from his past and sets off on a destructive journey to eliminate each lowlife connected to the crime.

DinoBoss is still plugging away on development for their roguelite twin stick shooter Demon Spore. The developer recently announced a new co-op demo for Demon Spore that allows you and up to 3 of your friends to team up via Steam Remote Play Together, or you can go it alone.
Taking inspiration from Chuck Russell‘s 1988 version of The Blob and other 80s monster movies, Demon Spore puts you in a genetic research laboratory, where a tissue replication experiment has gone wrong. The resulting accident has given birth to a viral mass of cells that is spreading out of control and evolving into some otherworldly creature. You play as an unfortunate scientist trapped inside the room where this experiment is taking place, along with a handful of staff members. You’ll have to use your scientific experience to learn how the organism behaves, find it’s weaknesses and fight your way to safety.

In the early 1990s, Jim Carrey had a run of movies that cemented his place as one of the greatest comedy actors of a generation. One that has left a lasting impression on pop culture is 1994’s The Mask, the eye-popping, Latin-dancing, Cameron Diaz-introducing spectacle based on the (incredibly) graphic novels by Dark Horse Comics. Now fans of Carrey’s wildly energetic performance have made it a streaming hit on Paramount+ over 30 years later, which asks the question of whether it is time to give The Mask the R-rated reboot it deserves.
Directed by Chuck Russell, the 1994 film is very loosely based on the comic book character who finds that he turns into a (very dubious) superhero when donning a mystical mask – see what they did with the title? The Mask follows bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey), a soft-spoken nice guy who transforms into a green-faced whirlwind of mischief...

What do you get when you mix Nora Ephron with Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers? The combination might seem antithetical, but it works scarily well in director Josh Ruben‘s sweet, funny, terrifying rom-com/slasher movie mash-up, “Heart Eyes.”
Working from an inventive script by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy, Ruben somehow deftly satisfies fans of both “Sleepless in Seattle” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” An iconic new horror villain is born in the form of the movie’s Heart Eyes Killer, a slasher who stalks young lovers each Valentine’s Day.
Ruben, as he explained to IndieWire, wanted the movie’s two sides to be equally strong so that the horror would deepen the romance made all the more terrifying because of our investment in the two young lovers (Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding) fleeing from the Heart Eyes Killer. "The Mask" seems like one of those movies that could only have existed in the 1990s. Though Chuck Russell's beloved 1994 comedy is known mostly for being one of the quintessential Jim Carrey classics that launched him to superstardom, it's also got a weird kind of '90s gloom and an oddly incongruous adult sensibility to it.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact "The Mask" was originally envisioned as a horror movie, or because it was directed by the guy that helmed "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" and the 1988 remake of "The Blob," but there was always something a little dark to a film that, on its surface, seemed like a good excuse to have Carrey chew scenery in his typical fashion. When Peter Greene's Dorian Tyrell donned the titular artifact at the end of the movie, for instance, it was genuinely a...

Cameron Diaz wants to play her role in the 1994 hit film The Mask again, but only if her original co-star Jim Carrey returns. Diaz discussed the effect of The Mask on her career and her willingness to return for a sequel during an interview with Access Hollywood to promote her upcoming Netflix film Back in Action.
Diaz joked, “If Jim is on board, I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one,” referring to how the dream comedy helped her break into the entertainment industry. The film was her first acting role, where she played Tina Carlyle, a nightclub singer caught up in the crazy adventures of Carrey’s character, Stanley Ipkiss. The story is about Ipkiss, a quiet bank teller whose life changes when he finds a magical mask that gives him cartoon-like skills that can change reality.
Diaz’s words match what Carrey recently said about possibly bringing back the franchise.

Cameron Diaz is possibly looking for another good time with The Mask.
The actress, who just made her onscreen return in Netflix’s Back in Action following a 10-year hiatus, recently told Access Hollywood that she would be open to reprising her role in a sequel to 1994’s The Mask, starring Jim Carrey.
“If Jim’s on board, I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one,” she said of a potential sequel.
Diaz played Tina Carlyle in The Mask, which followed bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey), who transforms into a manic superhero, called The Mask, when he wears a mysterious green mask. The film was directed by Chuck Russell.
Last month, Carrey also shared that he would be down to put on the iconic green mask once again for a sequel.
“Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea,” he told Comicbook.com at the time.

The A Nightmare On Elm Street franchise has seen various characters come and go, among them Kristen Parker, played by Patricia Arquette, and she’s right about one specific thing about her. Back in 1984, Wes Craven terrorized the audience with a one-of-a-kind slasher villain in A Nightmare On Elm Street. The movie introduces Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), a child killer burned alive by the parents of his victims. However, that isn’t enough to stop him, and he returns to terrorize the children of his murderers where their parents won’t ever be able to defend them: their dreams.
However, if Krueger kills them in their dreams, they die too. One of his targets, Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), goes to lengths to defeat him, but it’s not enough. The success of A Nightmare On Elm Street made way for a franchise with a total of nine movies (including a...

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has seen its fair share of final girls, but one that many fans would love to catch up with again is Patricia Arquette's Kristen Parker. At least the version she portrayed in 1987's A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, before actress Tuesday Knight took over the role in the fourth installment and encountered a grisly fate. Several legacy characters have returned to their respective horror franchises years after the original movies hit the big screen. The latest actor to hint at a potential return is A Nightmare on Elm Street alum Patricia Arquette.
Speaking to ComicBook, Arquette, who played Kristen Parker in 1987's A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, said she would definitely be open to reprising her role under one condition. "You know, I never really thought that in my dreams I'd be a gymnast, so I don't know," she joked. "Maybe I'll come back if I can change my superpower, but I mean, I don't know. Don't get me wrong, but I'd like something a little more lethal when I'm dealing with [Freddy Krueger]."

The third film in a horror franchise often carries the weight of high expectations and franchise fatigue. However, some horror “threequels” break the mold, delivering scares, thrills, and fresh twists. Here are ten of the best horror movie threequels that deserve your attention.
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
Director: Chuck Russell
This third instalment reinvigorates Freddy Krueger with a mix of dark humour, creative dream sequences, and a cast of characters who fight back. It’s a fan favourite for good reason.
2. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
Director: Tommy Lee Wallace
Although it departs from Michael Myers entirely, this standalone entry is a cult classic in its own right. Its eerie plot about a sinister mask company and haunting jingle makes it a unique entry in the Halloween franchise.

We all know Arnold Schwarzenegger terminated the 1980s as the premiere action movie star alongside Stallone, but what about the 90s? Beyond Total Recall, T-2: Judgment Day, and True Lies, what’s the best Arnie action flick released between 1990 and 1999? And when we mean best, we don’t mean box office success, we’re talking about old-school ass-kicking Schwarzenegger action hinting at the halcyon days that date back to Commando and Conan the Barbarian. Is it Last Action Hero? End of Days? Or is it Chuck Russell’s underrated 1996 conspiracy espionage thriller Eraser? If you said Junior, Jingle All the Way, or Batman & Robin, you may kindly show yourselves out the door this instant. Better yet, stick around, Eraser is about to wipe your memory and prove why it’s the last great Arnie action flick to blast the masses in the 1990s.
