Clint Eastwood's Pale Rider Has A Lot In Common With This Classic Western
Image
The 1980s was a lean spell for western fans. After the critical and commercial disaster of Michael Cimino's "Heaven's Gate," Hollywood studios were understandably reluctant to pile lots of money into a moribund genre and notable horse operas were few and far between. With the likes of "Silverado," "Young Guns," and "Three Amigos!" to choose from, Kathryn Bigelow's "Near Dark" was pretty much the best of the bunch, but that was as much a modern vampire movie as a typical oater. The classic western movie looked seriously long in the tooth, and it wouldn't flourish again until Kevin Costner resurrected it with his Oscar-winning "Dances with Wolves."

Then of course there was Clint Eastwood. If ever there was a filmmaker and a star who could buck the trend, it was arguably the best western movie actor to dominate the screen. By the mid '80s, Clint had  been...

Paul Newman Made Some Of The Greatest Westerns Ever With One Director
Image
When it comes to ranking the best Western movie actors, Paul Newman rarely troubles the likes of John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Gary Cooper at the top of all-time lists. Sure,  one of his most beloved movies was starring alongside Robert Redford in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," but arguably his most iconic roles were brooding outsiders like Eddie Felson in "The Hustler" and Luke Jackson in "Cool Hand Luke." Even so, Newman starred in his fair share of Westerns over the course of his career, putting in big performances for Arthur Penn in "The Left-Handed Gun," John Huston in "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean," and Robert Altman in "Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson." He also made two of the greatest Westerns ever with one particularly underrated director, Martin Ritt.

Ritt is arguably one of the most unsung Hollywood filmmakers, working...

One Of John Wayne's Best Westerns Launched An Unofficial Trilogy
Image
Picture the scene: You've been dating this great person for a while and it's time to find out whether they're a keeper. One night over cheeseburgers and vanilla Cokes you decide to pop the question: "Hey, do you like 'Rio Bravo?'" By his own admission, that was a criteria for a successful relationship in director Quentin Tarantino's younger years and he has called Howard Hawks' classic western of the greatest hang-out movies of all time. Depending on your point of view, spending two hours hanging out with John Wayne might not sound like the most appealing prospect, but there is little denying he was a screen icon despite his personal flaws. In "Rio Bravo," we find the Duke at his most engaging and charismatic, and the movie was so successful that it launched an unofficial trilogy.

Released in 1959, "Rio Bravo" was born out of Howard Hawks and...

Val Kilmer and Adam West Played 1 of the Western Genre's Greatest Icons 34 Years Apart
Image
Doc Holliday is one of the most interesting men in the history of the Western genre. A dentist-turned-gambler-turned-gunfighter, his real-life story has been fictionalized through countless portrayals in film and TV. Throughout the years, Doc has been portrayed in a wide variety of ways, ranging from the cold and calculating to the charming and unpredictable.

Among the many actors who have taken on the role, Val Kilmer and Adam West stand out for their takes on the character, even though they played him decades apart. Kilmer’s portrayal in Tombstone remains one of the most iconic, playing Doc as a brilliant and witty man battling tuberculosis. West, on the other hand, took on the role in the late 1950s and early 1960s in a series of TV Westerns, bringing a more classic version of the gunslinger. Despite these differences, both actors made their portrayals memorable, adding to the character's legendary status in the Western genre.

Quentin Tarantino Recommends John Wayne's 'Rio Bravo' for Date Night
Image
Quentin Tarantino seems to enjoy watching movies rather than making them. There’s still no word about his tenth and final film, yet he has recommended over 300 movies over the years. His fans might be irked by his unwillingness to be as industrious as his peers, but he sure has good taste. That Tarantino is a film fan more than a filmmaker should come as no surprise, considering that he worked at Video Archives, a video store in Manhattan Beach, California, for five years. Additionally, he is a self-taught director, meaning he had to do plenty of research early in his career. "When people ask me if I went to film school, I tell them, 'No, I went to films," Tarantino was once quoted saying.

Released in 1985, the movie, which was also produced and directed by the cinema legend, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and the celebration has started early as fans have been discovering the film on Tubi, sending it straight to the top of the free streaming platform’s movie chart.

As per the synopsis of Pale Rider, “When property owner Coy Lahood (Richard Dysart) starts using a band of hooligans to terrorize a group of small-town gold miners into giving up their territory, an enigmatic man named "Preacher" (Eastwood) arrives in town. Preacher fends off the attacks, and then goes directly to Lahood to negotiate. When the miners, led by Hull Barret (Michael Moriarty), refuse the terms, Lahood sends in Marshall Stockburn (John Russell) to take down Preacher and the others.

Clint Eastwood fans will soon be able to stream his genre-resuscitating 1985 Western Pale Rider for free. Horror Icon John Carpenter's Favorite Movies Surprisingly Aren't Scary
Image
It hardly needs repeating, but director John Carpenter is known for making multiple horror classics, including "Halloween," "The Fog," "Christine," "The Thing," "Prince of Darkness," "In the Mouth of Madness" and "Vampires." Although Carpenter doesn't have a notable, recognizable style or motif in his filmography (apart from recurring actors) he does seem to possess a subtle, natural mastery of filmmaking craft that makes all his films, even the bad ones, imminently watchable.

Carpenter loves horror, of course, but oddly, he's not a horror guy at heart. He possesses an old-world workman's attitude when it comes to filmmaking, just sort of sussing out, by instinct, how to shoot a scene, regardless of genre. Carpenter has given multiple interviews where he's talked about monster movies and sci-fi flicks that inspired him, but moreso, Carpenter talks about the films of John Ford and Howard Hawks, two American filmmakers best known for their high-profile Westerns.

The Horror Movie That Terrified Martin Scorsese and Guillermo del Toro
Image
Grief is a common theme in horror as it is one of the most terrifying aspects of being human that everyone will inevitably have to face. We are hardwired to prolong, or at least not think about our mortality, and films that explore our deep-seated collective fear of losing our loved ones will almost always cut deep. This fear must resonate deeply with both Martin Scorsese and Guillermo del Toro, as they both have named the 1980 haunted house classic The Changeling as one of their favorite horror films. Starring the phenomenal George C. Scott, The Changeling is a moody and atmospheric meditation on the trauma of losing one's family. It is clear from the first few minutes that George C. Scott's protagonist, John Russell (Scott), is suffering a deep break from reality as a result of a tragedy that no father or husband should ever have to face. The film...

The Changeling 4K Uhd & Blu-ray Review
Image
Sometimes, a particular subgenre simply isn’t your thing. I can count the number of haunted house movies I like with no fear of running out of fingers: Robert Wise’s original The Haunting; The Innocents; Crimson Peak; Hausu; Beetlejuice if you count comedies. Lake Mungo is a borderline case, not truly a haunted house movie for me, but a great film. I might also say The Others, but I last saw it about 20 years ago, so who knows? There’s one more I enjoy a lot, and we’ll come to that, but to cut a long story short, The Changeling had a bit of a mountain to climb with me. I’ll say this upfront: if you’re generally into ghost/haunting movies, you can add a star to my grade here.

Composer John Russell (George C. Scott) loses his wife and daughter when a truck ploughs into their broken down car.

30 Most Memorable Western Movies of All Time
Image
Western films have been a staple of American cinema for practically as long as movies have been made.

Movies in the Western genre are set in the American West, typically between the 1850s to the end of the 19th century. While it has been a stable genre — no pun intended! — it has also been the starting ground for several hybrid genres like Western comedies, Western musicals and horror Westerns.

No other genre’s history goes back quite as far as that of Westerns. According to documentarian David Gregory, “It has been estimated that up to 40 percent of all films made before 1960 were Westerns.”

Although the category reached its greatest popularity in the early and middle decades of the 20th century, with several becoming cult classics, films continued to be made even through droughts for Westerns in the late ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. Actors have also made their name starring in Western films,...

June Blair, who portrayed the wife of her real-life husband, David Nelson, on the reality-bending ABC family comedy The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, has died. She was 90.

Blair died Monday of natural causes at her home in Sherman Oaks, her daughter-in-law Susan Nelson told The Hollywood Reporter.

Shortly after posing as Playboy‘s Playmate of the Month in January 1957, the redheaded Blair starred as a woman mixed up in a complex theft of narcotics in the film noir Hell Bound (1957), starring John Russell.

Then, in 1959 releases, she portrayed a vulnerable secretary at a construction firm in The Rabbit Trap, starring Ernest Borgnine, and was one of three daughters of a nuclear scientist (future Batman butler Alan Napier) — Venetia Stevenson and Diane Jergens were the others — in Island of Lost Women.

“It’s Halloween. I guess everyone’s entitled to one good scare,” Sheriff Brackett says in John Carpenter’s Halloween. While the seminal slasher delivered no shortage of creepy moments and well-placed scares, the Halloween movies aren’t the only ones to embrace holiday frights. Howard Hawks Had One Rule When It Came To Writing A John Wayne Romance
Image
All leading men are not created equal. This is especially true when it comes to playing a love scene. Clark Gable was a man of action; when he lavished his affections on a woman, he knew they would be reciprocated. Cary Grant's approach was more playful; he used banter as foreplay, and let the woman decide when to take their sparring to the bedroom.

And then there was John Wayne. He was trickier. The Western superstar was adored primarily for his unruffled nature. He was the toughest guy in every scene, and we never truly believed his opponent could lick him or outdraw him. Romance was, at best, a secondary concern for him, but when a woman had her mind set on wooing him, he didn't exactly shoo them away. He might've been stolid, but he wasn't made entirely out of stone.

The Best Gothic Horror Movies
Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Monica Bellucci, Sadie Frost, Michaela Bercu, and Florina Kendrick in Dracula (1992)
One can make a case that the genesis of horror onscreen was borne out of the Gothic literary movement in the 19th century. Crumbling castles; ghostly cries across the moors at night; fog so thick it can swallow the moonlight… and your will to live. These are all staples of some of the greatest works of Gothic horror on the page, and many of the greatest horror movies of the first half of the 20th century pulled directly from such iconography.

While Gothic horror has become rarer in recent times, as you can see from the below list, it yet beats like the telltale heart in the wall. Given the right direction, it can even thrive and escape from its cloistered hiding places. Hence we here have composed a list of not all the best Gothic horror movies, but enough to get you started in exploring the most alluring of shadows.

Class of 1980: Memory and The Changeling
Image
“To remember is, more and more, not to recall a story but to be able to call up a picture.” — Susan Sontag

My maternal grandfather, Shiwóyé hastiin in Apache, lived with my family during the latter years of his life in the late 1980s. I was about 9 years old and he would watch me play basketball on my makeshift hoop in the backyard while smoking hand-rolled cigarettes and spitting chewing tobacco into soda cans with the lids chopped off. He was mostly quiet, on occasion sharing stories about encounters with rattlesnakes around his horse corral, his review of western movies played on late-night cable, and stories about my mother that were lessons on respect. Sadly, many of the stories have been lost somewhere in memory since that time so long ago.

However, one memory that continues to evoke strong emotions from me in oddly strange ways over the course of...

80s Horror Classic The Changeling Is Getting a Remake with Director Anders Engstr&#246m
Image
Director Anders Engstr&#246m is remaking the 1980 supernatural thriller The Changeling. No production start date has been revealed, but it is expected to shoot in Ireland. Joel B. Michaels was the original producer of the 1980 movie starring George C. Scott and he is on board for the remake and says that he kept the basic form of the story the same. "I just added another layer of an additional bigger idea onto that," he says. "That [idea] made it the same, but in a fresh and bigger way, [with] bigger stakes."

The Changeling remake focuses on John Russell, an accomplished composer who moves into a haunted mansion following the deaths of his wife and daughter, who were killed in a car accident. The remake will be an update and Joel B. Michaels is really excited to get to work on the upcoming project. He had this to say.

The Last Command
The ‘other’ Hollywood studio version of the Alamo story is quite good, with strong production values, exciting stunt battle action and something Republic Pictures didn’t manage very often, a solid screenplay. Sterling Hayden is Jim Bowie, this version’s central hero, with great backup from Anna Maria Alberghetti, Ernest Borgnine, J. Carrol Naish, and Ben Cooper. But best of all is that old hay-shaker Arthur Hunnicutt, as the movies’ best and most natural Davy Crockett.

The success of 70’s shockers like The Devils, The Exorcist and Alien – grindhouse films in big budget drag – opened the door to increasingly explicit studio fare – moviemakers were happy to accommodate and upped the ante in the bargain.

1980 alone saw the release of Sean Cunningham’s seminal slasher Friday the 13th, Ken Russell’s evolutionary freak out Altered States and, infamously, the unvarnished (and x-rated) depredations of Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust.

But it was The Shining, with its rotting ghosts, blood-soaked hallways and promise of never-ending horror that personified Reagan era fright films.

Into this heavy atmosphere ambled Peter Medak’s The Changeling, an unassuming murder mystery disguised as a ghost story. Compared to its over the top contemporaries, Medak’s film seemed...

The Uninvited (2009)
‘The Changeling’ Director Peter Medak Says the Industry Thinks He Is Too Old To Work on TV Anymore
The Uninvited (2009)
When it comes to the perfect haunted house films, horror aficionados usually list a handful of reliable classics. There’s 1944’s “The Uninvited,” starring Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey; 1961’s “The Innocents,” where Deborah Kerr takes on Henry James’ iconic ghost story “The Turn of the Screw”; and there’s 1963’s “The Haunting,” a pitch-perfect adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s tale of a truly diabolical haunted house.

However, 1980’s “The Changeling” often gets left out of this conversation — but there’s a reason Martin Scorsese calls it one of his favorite horror films of all time. The film stars Oscar winner George C. Scott as John Russell, a composer struggling with his own family grief who gets caught up in a supernatural mystery involving his new home, where the ghost of a child seeks to bring the house’s dark hidden history to light.

Now 80 years old, “The Changeling” director...

Blu-ray Review: The Changeling (1980)
While ghost stories and the supernatural have made a recent resurgence at the box office (think The Conjuring and Hereditary), there was a time in horror when they lay as dormant as a long-forgotten spirit: the early ’80s. Okay, The Amityville Horror (1979) did big business, and The Shining (1980) did well, but these were exceptions, not rules. Audiences were more apt to take in masked killers and teens in peril than adults dealing with psychic crises of the soul and heart. Leave it to Severin Films to unearth and give the deluxe Blu-ray treatment to The Changeling (1980), Peter Medak’s riveting meditation on retribution and the deep shadows of the past that is long overdue for celebration.

Celebrated composer John Russell (George C. Scott – Patton) moves to Seattle four months after his wife and daughter are killed in a horrendous roadside accident. Looking for a place to write in peace, he...

Meet the lusty Amber St. Clare, a 17th century social climber determined to sleep her way to respectability. And it has one of the all-time great Hollywood movie scores, by David Raksin.

Review: "Cannon For Cordoba" (1970) Starring George Peppard; Kino Lorber Blu-ray Release
By Fred Blosser

“Cannon for Cordoba,” a 1970 film produced by Vincent M. Fennelly for the Mirisch Corporation, written by Stephen Kandel, directed by Paul Wendkos, and distributed by United Artists, has been released by Kino Lorber Studio Classics in an attractive new Blu-ray edition. In the movie, U.S. Army Captain Rod Douglas (George Peppard) leads a three-man team across the Mexican Border in 1916. Douglas has been assigned to gather intelligence on a predatory rebel general, Cordoba (Raf Vallone), who has confiscated American-owned property in Mexico. Wealthy U.S. ranchers and politicians are demanding that the Army secure the border with troops (an outcry for a $70 billion wall would have to wait another hundred years). After Douglas’ team enters Mexico, one of the trio, Adam, is captured and tortured to death by Cordoba’s troops. Douglas and the third ranger, Jackson (Don Gordon), escape to warn Gen. Pershing (John Russell...

Cannon for Cordoba
A middling entry in the genre of blow-it-up big action spectacles, Paul Wendkos’ Spain-filmed western gives us all the excitement promised by the poster, but with some cardboard characters and lumpy storytelling. George Peppard is on the job, however, and once again proves he can carry a big picture, flaws and all.

Tobor the Great
Robot roll call! This also-ran robotic fantasy from the 1950s is precisely the kind of movie one would expect from Republic, a two-fisted anti-Commie tract for juveniles. The studio comes up with an impressive robo-hero, but short-changes us when it come time for action thrills. Still, as pointed out in Richard Harland Smith’s new commentary, Tobor filled the the kiddie hunger for sci-fi matinees, at least until Robby the Robot came along.

14-Year-Old One-Armed Catcher Stuns Orioles During Camden Yards Practice: ‘Over the Years I’ve Perfected It’
John Russell
Go Luke, go!

The Baltimore Orioles invited 14-year-old Luke Terry to hang out with players at Camden Yards prior to Wednesday’s game against the Cleveland Indians.

Luke, a catcher for his middle school baseball team in Tennessee, had his right arm amputated after he contracted an E. coli bacterial infection at 19 months old.

The teen taught himself to play baseball with one hand, and before Wednesday’s game Luke showed off his skills by catching the game’s ceremonial first pitch from Hall of Famer Jim Palmer. He then fired a fastball to Orioles bench coach John Russell by...

Or supposedly safely.

In honor of the season we thought we'd look at some of the best horror films that take place on Oct. 31, all of which should be added to any horror movie marathon.

The Best Haunted House Movies and TV Shows of All Time
Sarah Dobbs Oct 27, 2019

Do houses have memories? These ones seem to. We pick our favorite haunted house movies and TV shows...

The haunted house is a staple horror device. Usually hundreds of years old, ideally massive, and imposing with as many turrets as its roof can bear, there’s nothing like a haunted house to give you the creeps.

But making this list wasn’t as easy as you’d think. To qualify for the list, a film had to feature an actual haunted house – which immediately rules out many of the films that spring to mind when you read that title. The Shining, for example, is about a haunted hotel, not a house. Paranormal Activity initially seems like it’s about a haunted house, but it’s not the house that’s haunted, and also the supernatural entity is a demon, not a ghost. Ditto Insidious, which has some ghosts,...

Regal Cinemas Bans Backpacks After Theater Shootings
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964)
It's becoming increasingly scarier to walk in and enjoy a movie at the local theater. There have been two high profile theater shootings in just a matter of weeks, and they are as unpredictable as they are unexpected. One measure being taken by the Regal Cinemas theater chain is the ban of backpacks inside their movie theaters. Hawaii News Now was one of the first to report on the ban, which was issued during a special screening of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. last week. The ban has since started to spread across the United States and other theater chains, along with independently owned cinemas.

The line outside the Regal Cinemas&#160Dole Cannery last week was long and winding, but before anyone was allowed entry, the crowd was given a strict set of rules to abide by. The scene was tense, as some patrons grew uneasy with the new rules. No...

Suspect Wielding Hatchet, Gun Dead at Tennessee Movie Theater
Nashville, Tenn. (AP) - A suspect wielding a hatchet and a gun inside a Nashville-area movie theater died after exchanging gunshots with a Swat team that stormed the theater, police said Wednesday.

The suspect, who was not identified, was armed with a gun and a hatchet at the Carmike Hickory 8 theater in Antioch, said Don Aaron, a spokesman for Metro Nashville police.

It was not immediately clear if anyone was wounded. Aaron said one person may have suffered a hatchet wound, but fire department spokesman Brian Haas said the agency had not treated anyone for any sort of injuries.

Aaron said an officer came into the theater and was fired upon by the suspect. The officer shot back, then backed off. After that, a Swat team came in, and there was another exchange of gunfire. The suspect was then found dead.

The suspect had two backpacks, which are being checked by authorities.
