Image
More than 2,300 members of the Writers Guild of America West and East, including no shortage of heavy hitters, have signed the union’s open letter decrying the Trump administration’s “recent threats to the free press.”

“We are members of the Writers Guild of America who speak with one voice to decry the dangerous and escalating attacks on the First Amendment, independent media, and the free press,” the letter reads in part. “[Trump] regularly calls for the cancellation of news and entertainment television shows that criticize him in late-night and, most recently, The View.”

It ends with the ominous line, “This period in American life will not last forever, and when it’s over the world will remember who had the courage to speak out.” Read the letter and list of signatories in full below.

Spike Lee, Adam McKay and 2,300 More WGA Members Sign Letter Blasting Trump’s ‘Authoritarian Assault’ on Free Speech
Image
More than 2,300 members of the Writers Guild of America have signed an open letter decrying recent actions taken by President Trump and his administration that they say represent “an unprecedented, authoritarian assault.”

The WGA East and WGA West union members signing the letter include Spike Lee, Adam McKay, Ilana Glazer, Mike Schur, Liz Merriwether and Tony Gilroy.

The letter cites Trump’s “baseless lawsuits” against news organizations that have “published stories he does not like and leveraged them into payoffs”; for example, it points to Paramount Global’s agreement last month to pay Trump $16 million to settle “a meritless lawsuit” against CBS over a “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris that Trump alleged was deceptively edited. In addition, the letter notes, Trump has “retaliated against publications reporting factually on the White House and threatened broadcasters’ licenses,” and has regularly called for the cancelation of news and entertainment TV shows that criticize him.

The Night Agent season 3 just got a lot closer after latest filming update
Image
It's been a while since we had an update to share about The Night Agent season 3 as the upcoming season remained in production for much of the year, but we finally have some news directly from the creator himself. Peter Sutherland's next mission just got one step closer to hitting our screens as the third season officially hit the filming milestone that fans have been waiting for.

On July 14, The Night Agent creator Shawn Ryan revealed on social media that season has "officially wrapped production." Filming on the forthcoming third season began back in February 2025 before season 2 had even been released on Netflix. Why Rob McElhenney and the ‘It’s Always Sunny’ gang didn’t want Danny DeVito to join the record-setting sitcom (exclusive book excerpt)
Image
It's safe to say it wasn't always sunny behind the scenes of a certain beloved sitcom.

In her new book, It’s (Almost) Always Sunny in Philadelphia: How Three Friends Spent $200 to Create the Longest-Running Live-Action Sitcom in History and Help Build a Network, Gold Derby contributor Kim Potts traces the strange but true history of the show as it prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

The brainchild of Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Glenn Howerton (collectively known as Rcg), It’s Always Sunny, which premiered on FX on Aug. 4, 2005, introduced "The Gang," a gaggle of self-centered miscreants running a South Philly dive bar. Potts recounts the low-budget origins of the show, how Rcg joined together to craft the pilot and assemble the team, and, in the exclusive excerpt below, how its most famous cast member, Danny DeVito, wasn't quite welcomed with open arms when he joined in the second season.

The Boys creator is terrified about getting the ending right
Image
The fifth and final season of The Boys is on its way to Prime Video; according to cast member Jensen Ackles (Soldier Boy), filming wraps up next month. Then all there is to do is edit the episodes together, add in special effects and watch as the reactions roll in.

If you're showrunner Erik Kripke, that's a scary prospect. "I am in a fair amount of terror about a series finale," Kripke told The Night Agent and The Shield creator Shawn Ryan on an episode of the Creator to Creator podcast. According to Kripke, there are not that many great finales in the history of television, and being a fan-favorite show means nothing if you're unable to stick the landing. "You can count in one, maybe two hands, the truly great series finales. Of which, by the way, well done, I think The Shield is one of them. And, conversely,...

Breaking down the 2026 Golden Globes podcast category: Possible contenders, eligibility requirements, voting timeline
Image
On Wednesday, the Golden Globes released the eligibility rules for the new Best Podcast Award category. The goal of the honor is to celebrate excellence in podcasting by recognizing their "quality, creativity, audience engagement, and impact," but which famous podcasters might be in contention for the prize?

Only those that appear on a curated list of the "Top 25 Podcasts," as determined by Luminate, will be eligible to compete. The company will use a "proprietary methodology designed to objectively evaluate podcasts," based on the following key metrics: audience reach/engagement, financial metrics, and platform visibility/market presence. Nothing in the rules states that eligible podcasts have to be entertainment-related.

Once the 25 podcasts have been determined by Luminate, it's then up to those producers or distributors to submit their podcasts for consideration at the Golden Globes. Those who choose not to submit between the Oct. 1 and Oct. 31 submissions period will not be eligible.

“What Are We Doing Here?“: Eric Kripke Shares the Storyline That Almost Made Him Quit Season 1 of ‘The Boys’
Image
Now four seasons in, Prime Video’s The Boys has solidified itself as a favorite among audiences and critics alike. During its run on Amazon’s streamer, the title has nabbed eight Emmy Award nominations and has taken home trophies from the Critics’ Choice Super Awards and the Astra TV Awards. Yet, at the beginning of it all, series creator Eric Kripke found himself struggling to get the studio to understand the over-the-top, dark, and often incredibly gross yet comedic vision that has now become synonymous with the production. But luckily, no matter what notes he received, he always stuck to his guns when it mattered, as he revealed to his fellow industry professional, Shawn Ryan, during a recent episode of Sony’s podcast, Creator to Creator.

Recalling one of the first and (to their credit) only times Amazon put their foot down on a scene, Kripke said,

“The first...

“It Really Defined the Character”: ‘The Boys’ Creator Reveals the Scrapped Season 1 Finale Moment That Worked Its Way Back Into the Series
Image
Eric Kripke has been able to get away with a lot during his time as the showrunner of The Boys. Turning the raucous comics first penned by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson into series form was no small undertaking, but it’s something that Kripke fought hard for the chance to do. Along the way, he learned that he had to pick his battles with the title’s home studio of Amazon MGM, earning their trust as the series progressed. During an episode of Sony’s Creator to Creator, in which he appeared opposite Shawn Ryan, the show’s creator looked back on a time when something the studio axed ended up getting used down the road.

Pointing to the original idea for the Season 1 finale, Kripke said,

“This’ll sound silly, but it ended up being a really iconic moment in The Boys in Season 1. We shot Homelander – Antony Starr...

Another ‘Timeless’ Movie? Abigail Spencer Would Love to Do One — and Direct It
Image
In 2016, a sci-fi drama about time travel premiered on NBC. Timeless, starring Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, and Malcolm Barrett, was canceled after one season. This was back before shows being saved from cancellation became more and more common. But it was. Three days after its cancellation, NBC renewed it. Then, after Season 2, it was canceled again, in 2018. Miraculously, it was then saved again and given a wrap-up movie later that year Considering how popular revivals have become in the years since, we can’t help but think now is the perfect time to delve into that world again. And when TV Insider spoke with Abigail Spencer in March for her dark two-episode arc on 9-1-1, it became clear we’re not the only ones. “I call [Timeless creators] Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke occasionally. I’m like, ‘Hey, let’s do a movie,'” she told us. “My perfect world,...

Eric Kripke Has a Near Impossible Dream for ‘The Boys’ Finale After Consulting the Best Show Ever
Image
Eric Kripke announced last year, before the premiere of the fourth season, that The Boys would end after its fifth season. Kripke shared that he was thrilled to bring the climax of the series to the audiences. However, it isn’t an easy job for Kripke, who knows there are a ton of shows that were ruined by their disastrous endings. So, how does Kripke intend to avoid a Game of Thrones-like disaster?

He has consulted with the writers of one of the greatest shows in history, which nailed its ending. Bryan Cranston’s Breaking Bad writers may have provided him with answers on how to come up with the perfect finale, but Kripke admits that it is a near-impossible mission to execute those suggestions for The Boys Season 5.

'The Boys' Showrunner Admits to Being Petrified About a Series Finale
Image
Prime Video's superhero TV series The Boysis nearing its conclusion with the current development of its fifth and final season. Details remain under wraps, and while some have teased an epic finale, most fans remain in the dark about what could happen during the final showdown between the Boys and the Supes. Naturally, showrunner Eric Kripke has all the answers, but even holding all the narrative power in his hands can't stop him from being afraid of ending the show: "I am in a fair amount of terror."

Kripke chatted with Shawn Ryan (The Night Agent) on the Creator to Creator podcast, produced by Sony. During the episode, he talked about The Boys' final season, which is probably arriving on streaming some time in 2026. While he remained vague about plot details, his comments imply that things will get messy.

Kripke has previously mentioned that some characters will die in Season 5, teasing a brutal confrontation.

“We Want It To Go Deeper, Not Bigger”: Eric Kripke Reveals How ‘The Boys’ Stays Away From Becoming a Parody of Itself
Image
During its four — soon(ish) to be five — seasons on Prime Video, The Boys has gone above and beyond the call of providing jaw-dropping moments. Whether it’s Homelander’s (Antony Starr) obsession with milk, The Human Centipede sequence with Splinter (Rob Benedict), or Herogasm, no bridge is too over-the-top, gross, or shocking for showrunner Eric Kripke and his team to cross. At the same time, the series’ creator, who recently appeared on an episode of Sony’s podcast, Creator to Creator, alongside Shawn Ryan, admits that they never want to go too far with things in a way that would distract from the primary story.

When asked by his fellow industry professional if he's tempted to go bigger with each season, Kripke said,

“I do my best to really wrestle that down. We always say we want it to go deeper, not bigger. But there’s inevitably — just because...

“As Good as a Show Gets”: ‘The Boys’ Showrunner Reveals Which Series Finale He’s Learned From the Most
Image
Though The Boys won’t be Eric Kripke’s first rodeo into series finales, it’s the one he’s dreading the most. After successfully rounding out beloved titles like Supernatural after an incredible 15-season run, the Prime Video production is the thing that’s now keeping him up at night. Luckily, he has plenty of other masterful titles to look to for inspiration. During a recent installment of Sony’s Creator to Creator podcast, the showrunner chatted with The Night Agent’s Shawn Ryan about the series of yesteryear that informed his approach to what will essentially be the biggest episode The Boys has ever delivered.

First and foremost, at the top of his list of importance is ensuring the audience gets the well-rounded finale they’re looking for, telling Ryan,

“How do you tie up the stories? How do you do it in a way that is emotional and satisfying?...

That shocking ‘The Last of Us’ death, final seasons for ‘The Boys’ and ‘Cobra Kai,’ and more from Sony TV actors and showrunners
Image
Few TV deaths have been as shocking as the one suffered by Pedro Pascal on The Last of Us. Anyone who has played the PlayStation video game from which the show is adapted knew that Pascal's character, Joel Miller, was doomed from the start, yet his demise midway through Season 2 still came as a surprise. And as game creator and series cocreator Neil Druckmann revealed during a recent FYC event for Sony Television some higher-ups were desperate to keep it from happening for as long as possible.

As Druckmann recalled, he had a conversation with Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO, who said, "I just got off the call with this agent, and he yelled at me: 'Why didn't you offer those guys millions of dollars to not kill Pedro?'" Bloys, to his credit, said, "A deal's a deal. We have to adapt the material." This was the first time that Craig Mazin,...

“It’s Kind of Our Take ‘On Top Gun: Maverick;”: ’S.W.A.T. Exiles’ Boss Teases Exciting New Spin-Off Details
Image
CBS delivered another crushing blow to S.W.A.T. fans a few months ago when the network announced the show had been canceled. However, it didn’t take long — only two months, in fact — for Sony TV to swoop in and save the series. It was announced that Shemar Moore would return and reprise his role as Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson in S.W.A.T. Exiles, a new spin-off series that’s in early development. Moore is currently the only one attached to star in the project, but it was confirmed a few weeks ago that series executives “expect” some fan favorite characters to return in the series. During a recent interview with Variety, Sony Pictures TV President Katherine Pope spoke about how Top Gun: Maverick inspired the show:

"It’s a bit of a take on the culture generation clash of Gen X versus Gen Z. Where Hondo is all about duty,...

"It’s Kind Of Our Take On Top Gun: Maverick": S.W.A.T. Exiles Team Reveals The Spinoff's Hook
Image
The team behind S.W.A.T. Exiles opens up about how the mega-hit Top Gun: Maverick inspired the show's take. Surviving cancellation for a third time, it was announced in May that the world of S.W.A.T. would continue with the spinoff S.W.A.T. Exiles. Lead star Shemar Moore is set to reprise his role as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson Jr. for the project. However, rather than reunite with his former castmates, Moore will be joined by a new cast of characters. Sony Pictures Television, which produces the action drama franchise, has yet to announce a home for the spinoff.

In a recent interview with Variety, Sony Pictures TV President Katherine Pope was asked to shed some light on the creative direction of the surprise spinoff and the decision to bring on Lucifer's Jason Ning as showrunner and executive producer. In the quote below, Pope talks about why original series creator Shawn Ryan is...

Dave Mustaine: Metallica Stole “Enter Sandman” Riff from Another Band
Image
Dave Mustaine has once again asserted that Metallica stole their most famous riff from a song by another band.

In a new interview on “The Shawn Ryan Show,” Mustaine accused his former band of lifting the “Enter Sandman” riff from crossover thrash band Excel and their 1989 song “Tapping Into the Emotional Void.”

Get Metallica Tickets Here

Comparisons between the songs have been made over the years — even by Mustaine himself some 20 years ago — and members of Excel once considered taking legal action against Metallica, per a report in 2003. The riffs do bare similarities, as does the tom-drum buildup in both songs, and Mustaine felt the need to remind people when he began discussing Metallica in the interview.

“I made sure not to ever say that I quit, because I wanted people to know that I was unfairly dismissed and that I didn’t give a shit,” the Megadeth mastermind said of his tenure with Metallica.

S.W.A.T. Actor Comments On Shock Shemar Moore Spinoff Announcement After Its Cancelation: "It Felt Like We Were Brushed Aside"
Image
S.W.A.T.star David Lim reacts to the surprising spinoff news, sharing his thoughts in a lengthy social media post. Mere days after the S.W.A.T. series finale aired on May 16, it was announced that Sony Pictures Television, which produces the action drama, was moving forward with the spinoff S.W.A.T. Exiles. Shemar Moore is set to reprise his role as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson Jr., though reporting has indicated that he'll be joined by a new cast of fresh faces.

Lim, who plays Victor Tan, reacted to the spinoff news on Instagram. In a lengthy post, which is included below, Lim confessed that Hondo's spinoff's surprise rollout did “sting”, underlining the lack of a mention for the original cast. The actor, who was a part of S.W.A.T. from its very first episode, went on to thank fans for their messages of support and said that he doesn't know what the future might hold.

Swift ‘S.W.A.T.’ Spinoff: Behind The Mad Dash To Get ‘Exiles’ Starring Shemar Moore Off The Ground
Image
S.W.A.T. fans have been on an emotional rollercoaster over the past two years, mourning the series’ cancellation and rejoicing in its subsequent resurrection — three times each.

Like the action drama’s first two comebacks at CBS — its surprising cancellation reversal in 2023 and equally surprising 2024 Season 8 renewal after Season 7 had been billed as final — the most recent one was a cause for celebration, at least at the beginning.

And like the previous two saves, that last one also came as a surprise, two and a half months after S.W.A.T.’s latest (and permanent) cancellation by CBS and only 3 days after its series finale aired on the broadcast network. On Sunday night, S.W.A.T. studio Sony Pictures Television announced that it was extending the franchise with a spinoff series, S.W.A.T. Exiles, headlined by original series’ star Shemar Moore reprising his character as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson.

The news about the offshoot...

S.W.A.T. Spinoff Show: Cast, Story, and All We Know So Far
Image
CBS’s action drama series S.W.A.T. has been kicking doors down since 2017. The show was the reboot of the 1975 TV series. It followed Shemar Moore’s Sergeant Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson and his team of LAPD officers and gave us eight seasons full of action and social commentary. But even though the show was a success, it had its own challenges.

S.W.A.T. has been cancelled many times before, and it was the fans’ love that kept bringing it back again and again. But now, the series marked its end with Season 8. However, that doesn’t mean that fans won’t see Hondo back in action. A new spinoff series has already been announced, which will keep the legacy of the original alive. But before that, let’s explore what happened with the original series and what the spinoff brings to the table.

Why was S.W.A.T. cancelled multiple times? Shemar Moore, Jay Harrington,...

The Real Story Behind ‘S.W.A.T.’s Latest Cancellation Revealed
Image
CBS

After nearly a decade of tactical takedowns, moral dilemmas, and community service on primetime television, S.W.A.T. has officially signed off.

The action-packed series, led by the ever-charismatic Shemar Moore, concluded its final mission on May 16, 2025, bringing an end to an eight-season journey that beat the odds more than once.

From its premiere in 2017, S.W.A.T. carved its own lane in the crowded world of cop dramas, reinventing the 1970s classic with a modern edge and a deeply diverse cast. Fans gravitated toward Moore’s portrayal of Sgt. Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson—a leader caught between duty and justice in a city that rarely made things easy. Alongside him were Jay Harrington, Alex Russell, David Lim, and others who gave heart and heat to the streets of Los Angeles.

But while the series found a devoted audience, its path behind the scenes was anything but smooth. Cancellations, comebacks, contract conflicts, and network shake-ups made S.

Shemar Moore is taking a moment to thank all the “baby girls” out there who fought to keep S.W.A.T. alive.

Following word that the thrice-cancelled CBS police procedural would continue by way of 10-episode offshoot S.W.A.T. Exiles, Moore celebrated the news in a video shared by producers Sony Pictures Television.

‘S.W.A.T.’ Spinoff Planned By Sony With Shemar Moore Set To Reprise His Role As Hondo
Image
Come to think of it, Shemar Moore did seem uncharacteristically subdued on social media after the May 16 series finale of S.W.A.T.

And now we know why he wasn’t repeating things like “we ain’t done chasing bad guys and blowing up stuff” like he did after CBS canceled his show a second time: he’s not saying goodbye to Hondo, after all.

Sony Pictures Television is spinning off the cop drama for a new show dubbed S.W.A.T. Exiles. Moore will reprise his character as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson while the 200-person production crew that helped to make S.W.A.T. a success for CBS will get to keep their jobs when production resumes this summer in Los Angeles.

Move over, Spotify and Apple. YouTube has its own podcast charts now.
Image
For years, Spotify and Apple have published their own charts showing best-performing podcasts. As a result, when new podcasts debut or older podcasts see a notable spike in listenership, those companies are often cited in articles, simply because they’re the ones providing the data.

YouTube, it seems, is no longer willing to be left out–especially with 1 billion people listening to podcast content on its platform each month.

This morning, as a followup to its annual Brandcast presentation, it revealed the launch of its own weekly podcast charts.

Called Weekly Top Podcast Shows, the chart will update each Wednesday, showing the top 100 podcasts on YouTube by U.S. watch time.

Unsurprisingly, YouTube’s first chart showed The Joe Rogan Experience is its #1 podcast, followed by Kill Tony, Rotten Mango, 48 Hours, The MeidasTouch Podcast, and H3 Show. (More below.)

Alexi Hawley Reveals How 'The Night Agent' Affected 'The Recruit'
Image
The Recruit and The Night Agent are two action-packed Netflix shows that share many similarities in the themes they explore and their settings. The Recruit follows Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo), a CIA lawyer, while The Night Agent follows Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), an FBI agent. The shows were released around the same time and overlapped while in development to the point where The Recruit had to change its title. Other characters in the show regularly call Owen the Chaos Agent, and series creator Alexi Hawley revealed to Deadline that the show was to be called The Chaos Agent. However, with The Night Agent also coming up on the same streaming platform, there was a risk of confusing viewers, which could affect viewership. Here's what Hawley said:

“I mean, it’s a phrase I use, and it was actually one of the titles that got kicked around for Recruit way back in the day,...

S.W.A.T. Series Finale Update Reveals if Original Characters Will Return
Image
In a recent update, it was revealed that the S.W.A.T. series finale will feel like "business as usual."

The 2017 action-drama S.W.A.T. has been canceled for the third and possibly final time. With the series finale just a few weeks away, TVLine, unfortunately, confirms that former cast members will not be making a return for the series send-off. Fans asked if viewers could expect the return of former characters such as Jim Street (Alex Russell), Christina Alonso (Lina Esco), and Dominique Luca (Kenny Johnson), specifically about the possibility of aStreet-Chris wedding. TVLine responded that, per the series finale synopsis, "it will be business as usual for 20-Squad."

The second episode of the two episodes making up the season finale is set to air on May 16th. S.W.A.T. showrunner Andrew Dettmann corroborated this in a statement, saying, "Even if we're no longer airing each week, we want the viewers to feel that...

Where You've Seen The Cast Of The Night Agent Before
Image
Not all television series are built with an eye toward earning critical acclaim and winning Primetime Emmys. Some shows are unabashedly formulaic, shuffling around tried-and-true plot turns the producers and writers know will satisfy their loyal viewers. Sure, prestige series like "Mad Men," "Deadwood," and "Succession" get all the plaudits, but hour-long franchises like "CSI," "NCIS," and the "One Chicago" universe bring in a ratings bonanza. And while networks and streamers dig awards, what they prize above all are ratings.

At best, these series combine savvy casting choices with punchy writing to concoct breezily effective procedurals that power you past their myriad implausibilities. They're akin to what we used to call "airplane reads" – i.e. briskly plotted novels that you pick up at an airport newsstand and tear through while enduring a long flight (perhaps people still do this). So it's not a surprise that TV creators have turned to...

The Night Agent Season 3: Everything We Know So Far
Image
Netflix has another hit on its hands with "The Night Agent," developed by "The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan and based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk. The series garnered attention as a political action thriller that follows low-level FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), whose father was accused of treason, leading to poor Agent Sutherland getting treated as suspicious as well. Despite saving a number of people during a terrorist attack on the metro, he's assigned to the frustrating role of "Night Agent," watching over a phone in the basement of the White House that seems to never ring ... until one day it does.

The first two seasons followed Sutherland as he tried to discover the identity of a mole somewhere high up in the U.S. government, and though he managed to discover quite a bit of corruption, it also came at a serious cost.
