Apple TV+ is still relatively new in the streaming industry, and despite having made a name for themselves by producing quality content that people talk about to no end, the Apple-owned streaming service has produced some shows that don’t get talked about much, but not because they are bad, but because they are overlooked. On one hand, Apple TV+ has produced extremely popular shows like Ted Lasso and Severance; on the other hand, it has brilliant but nowhere near as popular shows like Drops of God and Slow Horses. Created by Paul Rutman, Criminal Record follows two detectives Capaldis Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hagerty and Jumbos Detective Sergeant June Lenker crossing horns with each other after a call from a mysterious woman stirs an old murder case. The eight-episode crime thriller on Apple TV+ follows the footsteps of Lenker as she tries to seek justice for Errol Mathis (Tom Moutchi), whom she believed to be wrongly convicted for the murder of his girlfriend Adelaide Burrowes (Ema Cavolli). However, at every step, she finds resistance from Dci Hagerty, who seems to be covering his tracks all along. In the end, although Lenker manages to seek justice for Mathis, Criminal Record leaves room for more mysteries to be solved in Season 2.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Criminal Record finale “Carla.”] Apple TV+‘s latest crime thriller does wrap up its case in the finale, but given that nothing really seems to be limited anymore, we have to ask the question: Will there be a Criminal Record Season 2? “Quite honestly, we’ve been so consumed by making this series—we didn’t finish in post very long ago—and getting it out that we just haven’t really had those conversations. We just want everybody to love this season,” executive producer Elaine Collins told TV Insider. Added executive producer Paul Rutman, “Then we’ll see.” The finale sees the truth come out about the murder for which Errol Mathis (Tom Moutchi) has been serving time all these years. He didn’t kill his girlfriend, despite a statement her son Patrick gave to Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) that led to Errol’s confession. Rather, the murderer was ...

If one were to turn away their eyes from the stellar performances put forth by Cush Jumbo and Peter Capaldi going head-to-head while a dark mystery brews in the background, there’s plenty that still makes Apple TV+’s Criminal Record unlike any other detective drama on streaming. Brimming with mystery, social commentary, and tension natural to its social setting, Criminal Record rises above the expectations of its genre to deliver a plot that keeps thickening despite gradually shedding its layers. Ultimately, Paul Rutman’s Criminal Record is as much about the mystery as it is about the policing system and the veil of prejudice that often blinds it.

This episodes one and two review contains plot details but is largely spoiler-free.
In eight-part crime thriller Criminal Record, Peter Capaldi’s Dci accuses Cush Jumbo’s DS of unconscious bias. Has she – a woman of colour – automatically believed a tip-off about a West African-British prisoner’s wrongful conviction because she’s primed to see racist conspiracy everywhere? Or is Jumbo’s character simply seeing racist conspiracy because she’s looking right at it?
That mystery is at the centre of this new drama from the makers of ITV’s Vera. Two episodes of writer Paul Rutman’s series are out now on Apple TV+, with the rest to follow weekly on Wednesdays until February 21. Has Jumbo’s DS Lenker stumbled on a corrupt ring of racist cops led by Capaldi’s Dci Dan Hegarty, or is she putting two and two together to make five?

It is certainly not the case that every lackluster show title reflects a lackluster show. For every tepid Suspicion there’s a zippy Hijack, for every drab Liaison a gorgeous Foundation — and that’s just on Apple TV+. But an uninspired name can feel, in retrospect, like an early warning sign.
So it is with the streamer’s Criminal Record, not to be confused with Criminal Minds or Criminal: UK or Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The thriller has its merits, chief among them Cush Jumbo and Peter Capaldi as a pair of rival cops. But a tendency to prioritize themes over characters, combined with languid pacing and a too-measured tone, ultimately results in too little payoff for the time it demands.

The television landscape is replete with forgettable show titles, but few are as bland as Criminal Record. The name reveals nothing about the contents of the Apple TV+ series, beyond indicating that it's a crime drama, or reflects the fact that it's a two-hander between Cush Jumbo and Peter Capaldi, who play police detectives on opposite sides of a murder investigation. And it certainly doesn't do justice to the thriller's unique willingness to confront police corruption head-on, something that instantly sets Paul Rutman's drama apart from the many shows that prefer to glorify the criminal justice system.

When Peter Capaldi flickers into view on the Zoom call, I half expect him to tell me to “F** Off!”
For TV viewers of a certain age, the 65-year-old Scottish actor will forever be Malcolm Tucker, the supremely sweary spin doctor in Armando Iannucci’s pre-Veep Brit political satire The Thick of It.
“It’s The Thick of It and Doctor Who,” says a charming (and clean-mouthed) Capaldi, about the roles he’s most recognized for (he played the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor in the cult sci-fi series from 2013 to 2017). “Surprisingly, The Thick of It is still incredibly popular [the series wrapped in 2012]. People, generally very cool, smart young people, recognize me from that a lot. They generally just ask me to swear at them.”
Of course, there’s a lot more to Capaldi than Tucker and the Doctor. His scores of film and TV appearances include playing alongside Burt Lancaster in Bill Forsyth’s 1983 classic Local Hero,...
