"She Falls at the Last Hurdle": Denise Gough Opens up About Dedra’s 'Andor' Season 2 Fate
Image
Denise Gough plays Dedra Meero in the Star Wars series Andor. A woman dedicated to the Empire and rising up its ranks, Dedra's fate was a lesson for those who uphold fascism. She is left in an Imperial cell alone, there because she tried to get to Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård) and prove herself to her superiors. All of this happened after Dedra lost her love when Syril Karn (Kyle Soller) is shot by a blaster during the Ghorman Massacre. And in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gough spoke about what happened in the year since Syril's death and what she really thinks about Dedra's final moments.

Syril's death happens when he finally finds Cassian Andor (Diego Luna). He's moments away from killing Cassian himself, but then Carro Rylanz (Richard Sammel) comes to Cassian's aid. When asked about Dedra's response in the year between Episodes 9 and 10, Gough says that his death "ruins her.

‘Bad Thoughts’ Netflix Review: Tom Segura’s Comedy Series Is Traumatizing And Funny
Image
Up to 2020 I used to watch a lot of stand-up comedy. I guess my introduction to the genre was through Seinfeld. After that, I used to actively seek out old videos of Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Jim Carrey, George Carlin, and every other comic who built the bedrock of this profession. And I used to keep track of the newcomers, especially from India, because it was so interesting to get fresh and hilarious perspectives on things I encountered in my daily life. But then the pandemic happened, live shows were shut down, and all those Zoom sessions didn’t really cut it anymore. Then Bo Burnham released Inside and changed everything. Crowdwork didn’t seem funny anymore. Observations about urinals and, I don’t know, sliced bread fell flat. Jokes about the transgender community and sexist humor, which weren’t amusing to me to begin with, felt all the more crass.

Andor season 2 episode 8’s big death explains a major Rogue One absence
Image
Just as Tony Gilroy’s Andor gets into its stride, it’s time to accept that the story is nearly over. While the first season played out over 12 thrilling episodes set in year 5 Bby (Before the Battle of Yavin), the final season has leaped through the galaxy far, far away at breakneck speed. Even though we’ve enjoyed having our own mini Star Wars movie every week, releasing three-episode blocks, with each covering a different year, means there’s been a lot to pack in.

Gilroy previously told Empire how Andor will lead directly into the events of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. As well as Diego Luna leading the charge as the titular Cassian Andor, Rogue One alumni including Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), and Bail Organa (recast with Benjamin Bratt) are neatly knitting things together. The question is, what...

Andor Season 2 Episode 8 Makes The Destruction Of Alderaan Look Like Child's Play
Image
Be ready to give up all chance at inner peace and make your mind a sunless space if you haven't watched episode 8 of "Andor" season 2, because there are major spoilers ahead.

One of the biggest magic tricks "Andor" pulls is make you forget it's a prequel. The problem with prequels is that, by knowing what's coming, the tension disappears. How can you surprise the audience when they know where things are headed? Where the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy focused almost entirely on just showing the origin of characters we knew and how they ended up where the audience first met them, "Andor" (and "Rogue One" before it) have a similar approach to the balancing act of the masterpiece that is "Better Call Saul."

Though we know where Cassian (Diego Luna), Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly) and Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) end up, the surprises and tension rest on those characters whose fates we don't already know.

‘Andor’: Is [Spoiler] Dead? Breaking Down Season 2’s Most Shocking Moment
Image
Note: This article contains spoilers from “Andor” Season 2, Episode 8.

“Andor” Season 2, Episode 8 is one of the most viscerally upsetting hours of up-close, in-your-face violence that the “Star Wars” franchise has ever produced. After spending seven episodes setting it up, the Disney+ series finally delivers on the growing, Imperial-induced tensions on Ghorman. Dedra (Denise Gough) and her fellow Imperial officials manipulate a crowd of Ghorman protestors into the planet’s capital square and then use a shot from a hidden Imperial sniper as an excuse to begin massacring all of the Ghormans present.

The episode’s most shocking moment is not the massacre itself, though, nor is it the long-awaited reintroduction of K-2So (Alan Tudyk). It is, instead, the death of Syril Karn (Kyle Soller), the tightly wound Imperial busybody whose initial Season 1 investigation into Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) set in motion all of the show’s events. Syril is...

‘Andor’ Star Kyle Soller on Syril’s Big [Spoiler], That ‘Feral Cat’ Fight Scene During the Ghorman Massacre and Drinking the Empire’s ‘Kool-Aid’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for Episodes 7, 8 and 9 of “Andor” Season 2, now streaming on Disney+.

“Who are you?”

Despite all their years of playing cat-and-mouse, Diego Luna’s rebel spy Cassian Andor and Kyle Soller’s Empire agent Syril Karn have never had much screen time together — until now. Unfortunately for Syril, their meeting is short-lived as he takes a blaster shot to the head amid the tragic Ghorman Massacre.

The political tension and civil unrest on Ghorman finally hits a breaking point in the latest “Andor” episodes. The Empire is going ahead with its secret mining plot, and soon the entire planet of Ghorman will be rendered unstable. Despite feeding inside information about the rebels’ plans to his Imperial supervisors, Syril is caught off-guard and feels betrayed by his partner Dedra (Denise Gough), who knew the truth all along. He snaps and briefly chokes Dedra, demanding that she...

Andor Season 2 Gives Its Best Star Wars Character A Perfect, Horrible Ending
Image
Call your kin to come and sing "We are the Ghor" ... but only after watching the latest three episodes of "Andor" season 2. There are major spoilers ahead.

"Andor" really is the single greatest narrative achievement of the "Star Wars" franchise, isn't it? This show is nothing short of a miracle, a bold, brave, complex experiment that makes the nearly 50-year-old franchise better in retrospect. Season 2 has brought every character arc and plotline to a masterful boil on the road to "Rogue One" with a tragic, poignant exploration of the cost of fighting fascism. There is no mistaking it: This beautifully crafted, shot, and designed show is not just great "Star Wars" TV, but one of the best TV shows of the decade, period.

In an already tragic yet epic season, it's been hard to say goodbye to characters we've followed since season 1. Of course, "Andor" is not just going to...

‘Andor’: Genevieve O’Reilly & EP Tony Gilroy Talk [Spoiler]’s Death, Mon’s Big Speech & the Ghorman Massacre
Image
[Warning: The following contains spoilers for Andor Season 2 Episodes 7, 8, and 9.] There’ll be no more ambiguity in the Star Wars history books as to what really happened when the Empire descended on Ghorman two years before the Battle of Yavin. During Andor Season 2’s third block of episodes, we see Imperial soldiers open fire on a crowd of peaceful protestors; unbeknownst to them, it’s a gathering specifically staged for slaughter by Isb Supervisor Dedra Meero (Denise Gough), who narrowly escapes assassination by Cassian (Diego Luna) during the event. On the subject of Cassian, a reeling and betrayed Syril (Kyle Soller) finally catches him — but he’s killed by a blaster bolt from Carro Rylanz (Richard Sammel) before he can bring the “criminal” to justice. In the aftermath, Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) prepares and delivers a stunning denouncement of Imperial leadership to stand among the best speeches in the galaxy… but safely extracting her from Coruscant proves a dangerous ...

‘The Strain’: Why Was Guillermo del Toro’s Vampire TV Show Not Renewed for Season 5?
Image
The early 2010s in the television landscape were more of an experimental space, undergoing a seismic shift. The success of shows like The Walking Dead had proven that even the horror genre could thrive on the small screen, paving the way for a wave of genre-defining series. Among these was Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain, a visceral, blood-soaked vampire thriller that premiered on FX in July 2014.

Created by del Toro and novelist Chuck Hogan, and helmed by showrunner Carlton Cuse, the series was based on their novel trilogy of the same name. A vampire thriller combined with de Toro’s signature blend of grotesque creature design, mythological depth, and juicy storyline, The Strain was a show designed for modern audiences fond of the genre.

From its initial days to its tantalizing ending, the series delivered a chilling narrative about a viral outbreak in New York City. For four seasons,...

Andor Season 2's Ghorman Language Sounds Familiar For A Reason
Image
This article contains mild spoilers for "Andor."

"Andor" was already the best "Star Wars" thing in decades when season 2 debuted, but Tony Gilroy's timely political thriller shines the brightest while focusing on the Ghorman storyline in its latest installment. The show not only offers a poignant exploration of politics in the face of fascism, but also of the mundanity of evil and how people become radicalized. In the Ghorman subplot, however, we see the full condensed story of the rise of a larger resistance against the Empire. While we've previously seen rebellions like the one on Ferrix in season 1, we haven't seen the formation of an organized revolution like the one on Ghorman -- until now.

What makes this so tragic is that we already know the Ghorman Resistance will fail, because it is, quite literally, orchestrated by the Empire, courtesy of your favorite evil "Star Wars" power couple.

Studiocanal, Komplizen Series ‘A Better Place’ Imagines a World Without Prisons: ‘Our System Is Broken’
Image
Can you imagine a world without prisons? In eight-episode series “A Better Place,” bowing at Mipcom, one city decides to do just that, closing down its correctional facilities and reintegrating prisoners into the society. Some support the idea – others are petrified.

“If you ask me, it’s a perfect moment to talk about this topic. The world is becoming more and more polarized, more and more black and white. We want to make people think and this series really takes time to examine the consequences of such experience,” says Nicolas Loock, managing director of Studiocanal TV and Studiocanal Series.

“We need to be able to forgive. Otherwise, what’s left? It’s supposed to be entertaining, but it would be great to launch a discussion as well, because there are similar experiments under way. Different countries look for other ways to rehabilitate people.”

A German-language series, “A Better Place” was produced by Komplizen Serien,...

After a dozen small parts, Baldé engineered his first starring role with the self-produced, English-language action thriller Covert Operation (aka The Borderland). The North Korean-set movie, about a bounty hunter on a mission to break prisoners out of high-security military compound, sold to Lionsgate for the U.S. and won praise from action movie fans.

A decade later, Baldé is appearing in the most ambitious production of his career, six-part show Lex Africana, which is being billed as the first martial arts-based action thriller to come out of West Africa.

Baldé plays brilliant architect and martial arts expert Gabriel Aliou Thiam who returns after a...

Featuring among key cast Alvaro Morte, “La Casa de Papel’s” Professor, and Japanese pop idol Tomohisa Yamashita, written by Alex and David Pastor and directed by Jorge Dorado, the six-part South Pole survival thriller kicks off with a sustained aerial shot swooping over cruelly barren Antarctic expanses, then down to a small but raucous crowd partying outside the Polaris VI Scientific Research Station.

Still the same apparent shot, it shimmies past Morte – who plays the Station’s belligerent cook and is gamely serving hamburgers – then morphs seamlessly into the subjective Pov of Johan (Alexandre Willaume), the Station’s second-in-command, as he nonchalantly grabs a bottle of wine and fair sprints into the Station.

Heading to his bedroom to make love to his wife,...

Behind the Scenes With Mediapro’s Antarctic Thriller Series ‘The Head’
On Sept. 13, the cast and crew of Mediapro’s upcoming dramatic thriller “The Head” gathered at a swanky Santa Cruz de Tenerife hotel to kick off promotional duties for this English-language series, which will wrap shooting later this month.

It was day 50 of production, and the cast had been working late, rushing to get every last shot before heading off to Iceland for one last week. Having only wrapped the previous night’s shoot less than 10 hours prior, all were in high spirits for that morning’s round of junkets with the Spanish, Japanese and English-language press, and for the set visit that then followed.

Variety was on-hand for the day’s events, and can offer the following take-aways from the visit.

Limited Series Appeal

The six-episode limited series took shape when Ran Tellem, creator of the Israeli drama “Prisoners of War” and executive producer of its American remake “Homeland,...

4.7 Ouroboros

As there are only a few episodes of The Strain left, it is certain that fans are going to be forced to say goodbye to some beloved characters. Yes, when a series, particularly a series that is immersed in hardcore TV horror, comes to a close, death is inevitable. This week, the Grim Reaper visits The Strain in a big bad way and we are forced to say farewell to some Strain mainstays. The longtime Strain characters that meet their ends this week do so in an unforgettable fashion. Four seasons’ worth of storylines and character development crescendo to a climax that is...

4.5 Belly Of The Beast

Now that the end of The Strain is in sight (five more episodes after this week, I believe), can we just all start begging FX for a Quinlan prequel series? I mean, who wouldn’t watch a series about an immoral, daywalking, altruistic vampire with an Uzi and a bone sword? This week, we get to see what a potential Quinlan spin-off would look like as the episode flashes back to Victorian England and focuses on Quinlan’s past.

In the present, Quinlan and Fet are still trying...
