Before He Was Hulk: Mark Ruffalo’s ’90s Horror Roles Show a Totally Different Side of the Star ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
Before Marvel came calling, Mark Ruffalo’s early film work looked nothing like his future superhero role. In the mid-1990s, long before his breakout in indie dramas and MCU fame, Ruffalo starred in back-to-back direct-to-video horror sequels, playing entirely distinct characters. One such flick is Mirror, Mirror III: The Voyeur (1995), which had fans reacting to how unrecognizable he looked. From his hairstyle to his model-like frame, everything in the movie clashes with the image of the green, brooding Hulk.

It’s funny how some of the most important and beloved movies of all time can come from stories that aren’t quite as celebrated or well read, and I’m not just talking about movies from 1982. The Thing certainly falls under that category because while Who Goes There is certifiably a great sci-fi story and there have been at least 3 movies based on it, The Thing and John Carpenter will live on far longer than Who Goes There and John W. Campbell. While that certainly doesn’t extend to all famous authors, Stephen King’s name is etched into history and 75% of his adaptations will either be forgotten or redone multiple times over, there’s also that middle ground. Phillip K. Dick has more than his fair share of adaptations out there, but his adaptations typically turn out higher profile than the author or his original works. Blade Runner...

Books and TV shows have had a special relationship for over a century now. There have been countless TV adaptations of popular books, and even if we count this year (which isn’t over), there have been over seven or eight. While there have been many brilliant books that were adapted through the years, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the TV shows are also good, and that’s why we decided to compile a list of the absolute best TV shows that were based on books. As a side note, we also decided not to include Game of Thrones and Dexter, mainly because of how they ended.

John Candy passed away on March 4, 1994, at the age of 43, having died from a heart attack. Candy had a history of heart issues in his family and spent portions of his life struggling with alcoholism and tobacco and cocaine usage. He was taken far too soon, as Candy was a charismatic, funny, talented comedian with dazzling movie star qualities. He died in Durango, Mexico, where he was filming Peter Markle's unremarkable Western comedy "Wagons East!," a film in which Candy starred opposite Richard Lewis.
"Wagons East!" was an inauspicious exit for Candy. The film was released only five months after Candy died, and it was a horrible box office bomb, earning only $4.4 million. What's more, it was terribly reviewed, racking up the rare and unenviable 0% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 30 reviews). Roger Ebert gave it one half of a star, calling it one of the least amusing comedies he had ever seen.

If you are the parent of a curious child whose reading level is well above their age, and, most importantly, seems to be seriously into horror, you're going to want to introduce them to the literature of Stephen King earlier than might feel responsible. If they can handle mainstream screamfests like "Poltergeist," "Alien," and "The Omen" (1976), they are ready to begin their lifelong journey through King's oeuvre. And he is so accessible as a storyteller in terms of vocabulary that much of what might seem beyond a burgeoning reader's ken is surprisingly graspable. The content can be a bit much, but King's edgiest works are unlikely to appeal to kids in the first place. They're not going to get a whole lot out of "Gerald's Game." They will want to read "Pet Sematary."
Where should they start? That's easy. "Night Shift." Published in 1978, King's collection of 20 short stories range from...

One of the most obnoxious sitcom tropes is when a show becomes popular enough that celebrities begin appearing on it as themselves. Now, some shows have made it work. Insane guest stars are The Simpsons thing, for example. And Curb Your Enthusiasm is about a guy in show business, so celebrities playing themselves makes total sense. But when a show is about ordinary people yet gigantic household names keep showing up on their doorstep the reality of that world is blown apart.
There have, however, been a handful of times when a celebrity played themselves on a sitcom and actually pulled it off. These are the top five…
5 Marisa Tomei on ‘Seinfeld’
Tomei’s appearance on Seinfeld worked out of sheer absurdity alone. The very idea that the pathetic George Costanza (Jason Alexander) would be exactly her type is funny on its own, but when George and Marisa meet, the comedy is sublime.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest television shows of all time, the star-studded 2004 Western crime drama Deadwood touts a top-tier ensemble cast led by Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, and Jim Beaver, with the sweeping series taking place in the lawless mining town in 1876 where former Marshal-turned-hardware store owner Seth Bullock finds himself at odds with the scheming saloon owner Al Swearengen. Featuring a winning blend of historical and fictional elements, the smash hit series ran from 2004 to 2006, garnering universal acclaim before being shockingly canceled after three seasons.
Fans were left outraged by the Western's unceremonious cancelation, as it won eight Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe during its brilliant run while helping launch the dazzling career of lead star Olyphant. In 2019, longtime viewers were finally given the conclusion they deserved when the cast and crew returned for Deadwood: The Movie, becoming a certified knockout just like its predecessor. Let's...

The Blade Runner franchise received a long-awaited sequel in 2017 from Denis Villeneuve, and although it was hailed by many as another masterpiece, the film failed to make a splash at the box office. Since then, another big-screen installment has been out of the conversation, but audiences will be re-entering the futuristic neo-noir world soon enough. Amazon is currently developing Blade Runner 2099, a television series starring Michelle Yeoh that will serve as the latest sequel to Ridley Scott's original 1982 classic.
According to Discussing Film, Blade Runner 2099 has officially wrapped production, which took place in the Czech Republic. Alongside the 2023 Best Actress Oscar winner, Euphoria star Hunter Schafer is set as the co-lead for the upcoming Blade Runner sequel. Due to the union strikes in 2023, the show's production was delayed several times before finally finishing filming late this year. As one could assume, plot details have remained scarce at best,...

Many factors are involved in crafting a compelling villain for a science fiction movie. After all, the bad guys often tend to be just as captivating than the heroes. Of course, one key element in designing a proper villain is giving them a purpose; a clear goal for them to be trying to achieve, particularly one that directly combats the objectives of the hero. Every so often, a film takes this idea so far as to include an antagonist who, when you think about it, actually has a very valid reason for doing what they do.
This is not to say that all of their actions are completely defensible; many villains are given that title because of the violent/excessive methods they use to achieve their goals. However, at the end of the day, it is difficult to deny that they did have understandable motivations. Having ideas that the viewers...

For a show that took a little while to find its footing, Newhart knew exactly what it had in the characters of Larry, Darryl and Darryl right from the start. In fact, the three brothers arrived fully formed in just the second episode of Newhart. In it, they were hired to dig up a body in the basement of Bob Newhart’s inn. The Darryls never spoke, but Larry, the leader of the group, was equal parts eloquent and unsettling. As such, they were delighted to dig up the body, and at the end of the episode, they were even more delighted to learn that they could have a dead possum that had been sitting outside of the inn (which no doubt served as a meal).
It was meant to just be a one-time appearance, but the brothers were an instant hit, so they were brought back a few episodes...

Ridley Scott's earliest films are now cult classics, but only Alien was a breakout hit when it was released in theaters. Scott reflected on Blade Runner's fumble at the box office.
Ridley Scott said Blade Runner and Alien would have been equally successful if not for one film critic's scathing feedback. "She destroyed me," he told Entertainment Weekly, referring to Pauline Kael, The New Yorker's legendary film critic who "destroyed Blade Runner in four pages."
"I didn't even meet her," he added. "To me, it almost walked in the column of industrial espionage, because you're destroying a product before it's out." Scott confirmed he had those four pages framed and mounted in his office, as his constant reminder not to read and believe his own press.

The upcoming show Blade Runner 2099 is taking the approach to the world of replicants that Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 should have. Though there isn't much information about Blade Runner 2099 yet, what is publicly known about the Amazon Prime Video show is extremely promising. Michelle Yeoh landed the lead role in Blade Runner 2099, and Hunter Schafer was also cast in a currently unnamed role. Yeoh's character, Olwen, in particular, seems to hint that the story of Blade Runner 2099 will be intriguing as well, as Olwen has been described as a replicant at the end of her lifespan.
Aside from the fact that it's a show instead of a movie, there are a few ways Blade Runner 2099 already seems very different from Blade Runner 2049. Ridley Scott, the director of the original Blade Runner, and his production company, Scott Free, are helping to produce 2099. Denis...

As beloved as it has always been, HBO's Deadwood was never one of the cable channels' highest-rated series. That's why it only lasted for three seasons. So, compared to stalwarts like The Sopranos or Game of Thrones, Deadwood might not be as well-renowned, but here's the thing: it's just as good, if not better, than those same series.
Set in the titular town in the glorious (and not so glorious) days of the Old West, Deadwood is a pulpy, one-of-a-kind Western, the likes of which fans of the genre won't find anywhere else. Boasting thrilling stories, memorable characters, and some of the most beautifully repugnant Shakesperean-like use of cussing anyone has ever heard, Deadwood is the type of series that fans love to experience time and time again. If you plan on doing so soon, here are the ten best episodes to re-experience.

What are the defining traits of a character actor? Why is a shapeshifting virtuoso like Daniel Day-Lewis considered a full-blown movie star, while a chameleon-like genius like Giancarlo Esposito is routinely relegated to supporting player status? As previously discussed here at /Film, there are multiple factors at play: box office, deeply ingrained cultural notions of physical attractiveness, distinctive utility, and the Borgnine Paradox.
It should come as no surprise that my solo endeavor to arrive at a solid-ish definition of "character actor" is not the first in the history of the written word. There have been many, many attempts by whole groups of esteemed journalists to get at some kind of reasonable understanding of this term/concept, and, having read more than a few of them, I can assure you that there is no hard-fast rule. You could call just about everyone outside of Britney Spears a character actor --...

Bob Newhart, the iconic comedian and actor who launched a more than six-decade run in show business in 1960 with his introduction of a deadpan, stammering everyman character whose popularity he rode well into his 80’s with a Grammy-winning comedy album and a pair of beloved Emmy-nominated sitcoms, is dead. He was 94 and passed away at his home on Thursday following a short illness. His longtime publicist Jerry Digney announced his death in a press release.
Newhart burst on the scene in 1960 with his album “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” the first comedy album ever to top the Billboard charts. It won three Grammy Awards in ’61, including Album of the Year, Spoken-Word Comedy Album and New Artist. Newhart’s first two albums of comedy monologues (the second called “The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back!”) in fact held Billboard’s top two spots simultaneously, a rare feat.

Bob Newhart, an Emmy winner and nine-time nominee who helped launch the recorded comedy craze with two smash stand-up albums before starring in the revered TV shows The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart, died today at his Los Angeles home. He was 94.
His longtime publicist Jerry Digney said Newhart died after a series of short illnesses.
Newhart broke out in 1960 with a pair of No. 1 comedy albums — despite never having done stand-up before. The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart spent 14 weeks atop the Billboard 200 and stayed on that chart for more than two years. The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back! arrived about 10 months later and also hit No. 1. The former won Grammys for Album of the Year, Comedy Album of the Year and Best New Artist and featured a slow-spoken still-cited monologue with Newhart as Abe Lincoln.

And yes, it should be considered somewhat “popular” since it spawned three sequels. If you haven’t seen the original Mirror Mirror, don’t worry because Dark Force Entertainment, headed by Demon Dave, has released it in 4K Uhd. That means you Og fans of this B-movie classic can relive some sense of nostalgia from that decade, now in 4K clarity.
Let’s dive into the film’s plot. Megan Gordon and her mother Susan move to L.A. and into a new home to begin their equally new lives. The previous residents left behind a lot of their belongings that are being sold by an auctioneer named Emelin.

The historical drama miniseries Manhunt was a fascinating look at the pursuit to track down President Abraham Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Booth, and, following its conclusion, many viewers may be looking for a similarly great historical drama series to watch. Luckily, there have been plenty of fantastic historical dramas that dealt with similar themes and present extraordinary depictions of real-life historical figures. Lots of these explored the incredibly varied history of the United States, but several historical dramas looked at other locations, periods, and themes.
From high-quality Westerns like Deadwood, which explored the formation of modern American civilization and the disintegration of the Wild West, to fascinating chronicles of other United States presidents like the miniseries John Adams, historical dramas have the power to both entertain and inform. Outside of America, there were also highly engrossing series dealing with other cultures, including Ancient Rome in Rome or feudal Japan in Shōgun.

Deckard is a top Blade Runner with a knack for identifying and retiring replicants with precision and skill. K, a Nexus-9 replicant, is a highly effective and intelligent Blade Runner, excelling in detective work and combat. Joseph excelled in eliminating replicants but stepped back from the job after falling for a replicant, while Marlowe remained loyal.
The Blade Runner movies may be named for the futuristic profession of hunting down replicants, but it's not immediately clear which of the few Blade Runners featured is the most skilled. In November of 1993, writer/director John Lafia (Child’s Play 2) unleashed Cujo Cocaine Bear (great punk band name) upon the world with Man’s Best Friend. In the movie, a Tibetan Mastiff named Max 3000 is released from a genetic research facility by a reporter named Lori (Breakfast Club’s Ally Sheedy) while trying to expose a company for their cruel experiments on animals. We eventually learn that while Max might look like the best boy ever, he has a lot more in common with Wesley Snipes’ Simon Phoenix character from Demolition Man than he does Lassie.
While in the lab’s care, Max has been experimented on and genetically enhanced with the DNA of a slew of dangerous animals. For example, if threatened he can camouflage himself with the colors of your garage and hide there like a chameleon before deciding to pop out and bite your dick off. He has super strength,...

On a recent episode of "Hot Ones," actor Mark Rufflao was invited on to discuss his career while chocking down incredibly spicy hot wings. Sean Evans, the show's host, read a film synopsis to Ruffalo and asked if he could identify the title. Evans read a synopsis for a 1994 film called "Mirror Mirror II: Raven Dance," a straight-to-video horror film put out by the beloved B-movie studio Image Entertainment. Ruffalo, of course, could indeed identify the movie. "That's 'Mirror Mirror,'" he said. "That was probably my first movie." Indeed it was.
Ruffalo pointed out that there was "Mirror, Mirror" and then there was "Mirror Mirror II: Raven Dance," which had a "Penthouse pornstar" as the lead actress and Billy Drago as the male lead. He noted that he played "the series actor sidekick." He joked that he had established a brand with the "Mirror Mirror" movies, sarcastically imitating...

'80s retro is popular right now, and chances are when people remember the great films of the decade, they are thinking of movies from 1982. In that magical year, the stars aligned and Hollywood seemed to create smash hit after smash hit. 1982 made not just the best movies of the decade, but some of the most enduring classics of all time.
The roster of amazing features from 1982 is so extensive that Oscar-winners like Gandhi, Das Boot, Quest for Fire, Sophie's Choice, and An Officer and a Gentleman won't fit on this list. Drama may have run the table at the Academy Awards that year, but sci-fi, action, and comedy dominated the pop culture, proving that 1982 was a truly great year for cinema.
Blade Runner Transformed the Sci-Fi Genre

TV icon Bob Newhart honored his Newhart co-star Peter Scolari as a 40-year friend, a joy to work with and “an essential part of the success” of the great 1982-90 CBS sitcom.
In a statement to Deadline, later tweeted, Newhart said, “I knew that Peter was sick, but his death still comes as a great shock. We were friends and colleagues for over 40 years. Julia [Duffy] and Peter, as a vacuous couple (Michael and Stephanie), were an essential part of the success of Newhart. In life, he was a fantastic person, and it was a joy to work together. Here’s a story about a different kind of ‘lockdown.’ This near-perfect Americana drama might be the real pinnacle of Sissy Spacek’s wonderful career. The no-baloney tale of rural life on the Texas coastline during WW2 is packed with strong emotions and solid sentiment. Wartime hardship and catch-as-catch-can romance strike an uneasy balance with more threatening material, including a highly suspenseful finish. First-time director Jack Fisk hits this one out of the park, with help from Eric Roberts, William Sanderson, Tracey Walter, R.G. Armstrong, Sam Shepard and little Henry Thomas. This is one of those special pictures that creates a warm feeling about people. The ‘Rum and Coca Cola’ scene is perfection of a special kind.

Amidst a garrulous cast of characters known for their exuberant verbosity on HBO's Deadwood, E.B. Farnum, titular mayor and proprietor of the Grand Central Hotel stood out. Like his foppish manner of dress, E.B. used flowery language in an attempt to elevate himself above his station, but his time spent in the "brackish water" always managed to show on his cuffs.

Writer David Milch gave E.B. some of the most nuanced, complex, and clever dialogue in the series, which veteran character actor William Sanderson delivered with aplomb. At once both a caricature of the town fool and the one person capable of showcasing the sincerity of the town beneath its mud-soaked exterior, E.B.'s observant dialogue has since been turned into some of the most quoted by fans.

American Gods arrived on Starz with a stellar cast and terrific source material, the novel by Neil Gaiman. It had pedigreed producers in Bryan Fuller, who ankled his shot at Star Trek: Discovery to devote himself fulltime to this; and Michael Green, a superb writer with tons of genre credits. It was visually arresting, emotionally moving, and stunningly weird.
Then there’s the second season. Fuller and Green were jettisoned amidst problems with the skyrocketing budget that exceeded $10 million per episode and their increased deviation from the novel. When Starz finally settled on Jesse Alexander to showrun the season alongside of Gaiman, a novice at television production. They scrapped the first six scripts while Starz cut the order from ten to eight episodes to save money and delayed release marking two years between seasons. Kristen Chenoweth and Gillian Anderson left in support of the ousted producers so their roles needed to be recast.

George Hearst might not be the worst villain ever played by actor Gerald McRaney, but he’s near the top of that list. The real-life wealthy miner and businessman character joined the series “Deadwood” for its third and final season 13 years ago as the main antagonist to the town. And now McRaney has returned for “Deadwood: The Movie” as a U.S. Senator still up to his murderous, devious ways.
For our recent interview (watch the exclusive video above), McRaney claims that most villains don’t think they are evil. He says, “One of the most important things that separates drama from melodrama is that if you’re tasked with playing a villain, you can’t play him villianously. You have to find all the things that justify all the things he’s doing and concentrate on that. Eliminate all of the stuff that might look evil and play the actions.

“Over the years I’ve read a number of different versions of this script,” reveals “Deadwood: The Movie” director Daniel Minahan, “and every year, it never really came to fruition.” But perhaps this was precisely the right time for the long-awaited film that wraps up David Milch‘s celebrated western series, which ended its original three-season run on HBO back in 2006. “David managed to tap into what I feel is an emotional zeitgeist,” he believes. Thirteen years after “Deadwood” ended abruptly on HBO, Timothy Olyphant returns with guns blazing as Seth Bullock, former sheriff and now a U.S. Marshal. The film version, titled “Deadwood: The Movie,” premieres on May 31 (just in time for 2019 Emmy contention) and picks ups in 1889 as the small western town celebrates entrance into the new 40th state of South Dakota. The two-hour project is written by the original show’s creator David Milch and directed by Daniel Minahan.

In our recent interview (watch the video above), Olyphant describes his return as the tough but mostly law-abiding lawman. He says, “David Milch is a genius. Like sipping whiskey on a lazy Sunday afternoon, “Deadwood: The Movie” gradually but deliberately rewards fans who have waited 13 years to find out what happened to our favorite foul-mouthed ne’er-do-wells.
South Dakota’s 1889 statehood celebration reunites those who moved on from this dusty midwestern town such as Alma Garret (Molly Parker) and Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert) with those who never left. The latter includes Al Swearengen and Seth Bullock.
There’s also Trixie (Paula Malcomson), Doc Cochran (Brad Dourif), Sol Star (John Hawkes) and Charlie Utter (Dayton Callie) among others all spewing beautifully crafted dialogue filled with flowery four-letter swears and gems of wisdom. None are as masterful as McShane, of course, and writer and creator David Milch wastes no time giving good old Al all the best lines.
“Does brevity exist in your repertoire, sir?” Al asks an especially despicable George Hearst, reprised by the incomparable Gerald McRaney.

While we wait for the long awaited Deadwood movie to be released, HBO has shared a great behind-the-scenes video for the fans to watch to help us pass the time and keep us happy and excited about what they are going to deliver.
Deadwood: The Movie comes from writer and creator David Milch and director Daniel Minahan (Game of Thrones) and the video features the wonderful cast and crew of the film discussing what it’s been like for them to slip back into their characters after all these years. It’s pretty cool and worth watching if you’re a fan of the show.
In the film, “the indelible characters of the show are reunited after a decade to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds reopened as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.

HBO has unveiled the trailer for Deadwood: The Movie and it finds Ian McShane's Al Swearengen back with some new problems and old rivalries. The network has also revealed the official title for the long awaited project, which is Deadwood: The Movie. We were treated to our first look at the movie earlier this year with a short teaser, but things are shown in a bit more graphic detail in the latest full-length trailer, bringing back Swearengen's trademark use of foul language.
Deadwood originally aired on HBO from 2004 to 2006, but was later unceremoniously canceled after a dispute between studio Paramount Television and HBO. Series creator David Milch agreed to end the series with a 2-hour movie, originally set to air on the network to offer fans some closure to the cult favorite. Welcome back to Deadwood. HBO has dropped the trailer for the upcoming “Deadwood” reunion movie — just in time for the 15th anniversary of the David Milch-created series debut — and by the looks of things, Ian McShane’s Al Swearengen is coming back with a whole new mess of problems.
In the two-hour film — officially titled “Deadwood: The Movie” — the indelible characters of the show are reunited after a decade to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds reopened as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.

American Gods introduces another new character, maybe, as three Gods vie for the favor of one human.
This American Gods review contains spoilers.
American Gods Season 2, Episode 4
One of the things you can say for American Gods is the show's creative team still manages to pull in good actors for even the smallest of bit roles. For example, the one-off appearance of Vulcan in the first season was delightful—I mention it pretty often—because of the performance of Corben Bernsen, who has always been a fun actor to watch.
This week, perhaps in an attempt to curry favor with New God The Reviewer, American Gods brings in none other than William Sanderson to play Money, the most powerful God in this history of Gods, and the God that stands beyond all descriptions. New, Old, or Other, Money has always been important, and since the first incident of bartering for coin,...

Al Swearengen is f—in’ back. HBO released the first trailer for “Deadwood: The Movie” on Thursday, which was also the 15th anniversary of the series premiere of “Deadwood.”
The teaser (watch above) doesn’t give too much away from the film, which is scheduled to premiere Friday, May 31 at 8/7c, aka the final day of Emmy eligibility, but it’s so nice to see those faces and ‘staches again. Set in 1889, the film follows Al Swearengen (Ian McShane) & Co. as they reunite after a decade to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Needless to say, things don’t go too smoothly. Per HBO, “former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds reopened as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.”
“You ever think, Bullock, of not going straight at a thing,” Al asks in the clip.
“No,” Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) deadpans.
