Avatar: Every Different Type of Bending Featured In The Last Airbender
Image
Avatar: The Last Airbender has four main bending types with unique abilities, including fire, earth, water, and air. The show became popular but had a despised live-action movie; a Netflix series is set for release in 2024. Each bending type has special subsets like bloodbending, metalbending, and energybending with various powers.

Avatar: The Last Airbender features four main types of bending: fire, earth, water, and air; however, each of them has its unique specialties as well. Airing on Cartoon Network from 2005 to 2008, Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most beloved animated shows of all time. The show became so popular that it received a despised live-action movie called The Last Airbender. More recently, plans were announced for a Netflix live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series based on the beloved TV show, which will be released on February 22, 2024.

The Iron Claw: Zac Efron's Wrestling Drama Debuts With Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
The critics are loving The Iron Claw, even if it's leaving them as a blithering mess by the end of it.

Written and directed by Sean Durkin, The Iron Claw explores the tragic, real-life story of pro wrestling's famous Von Erich family. Zac Efron leads the cast as wrestling legend Kevin Von Erich, supported by Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickinson playing his brothers and fellow pro wrestlers. It's not opening wide until Dec. 22, but with its early reviews at Rotten Tomatoes, the film has debuted with an approval rating of 91%. The overwhelming majority of the critics are giving very high praise to the film, giving credit to the entire cast along with Durkin's presentation of the "gripping" story.

Leila Grey Interview: Netflix's Wrestlers & Aew
Image
Wrestlers documentary series on Netflix focuses on Ohio Valley Wrestling (Ovw) and the behind-the-scenes struggles faced by CEO Al Snow and his team. Ovw hopes that the show will bring attention and turn their fortunes around, and the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive from both wrestling and non-wrestling fans. Leila Grey, a member of Aew and Ovw, discusses her experience on the show, working with Aew superstar Jade Cargill, and her goals in Aew as a standalone character.

Leila Grey is a member of the All Elite Wrestling roster, but she's also part of Ohio Valley Wrestling, which is the focus of the new Netflix documentary series, Wrestlers.

In Wrestlers, CEO and head of creative Al Snow copes with the pressures of booking his local Kentucky pro wrestling promotion, Ovw, which has a live weekly television show. Along with a rowdy locker room of wrestlers including Ovw Champion Mahabali Shera,...

For the Stars of Netflix’s Wrestlers, Timing is Everything
Image
Nestled away in what looks to be a warehouse district in Louisville, Ky is the Davis Arena. It might not look like much, but the sign outside of the door suggests otherwise:

“Tomorrow’s Superstars, Today!”

This is the home of Ohio Valley Wrestling, what I affectionately like to call the “little promotion that could.” It is also the subject of the powerful, hard-hitting new Netflix docu-series, Wrestlers, which follows the men and women in this struggling developmental territory. They are the future stars of professional wrestling, many of them. All of them have that dream. But to accomplish it, they must first make their name and prove themselves. And that happens in places like Ovw. Unfortunately, times are tough for the company. No longer a breeding ground for the main roster stars of WWE, Ovw is going through a turbulent stretch with new owner Matt Jones, who often conflicts with 60-year-old wrestling legend,...

Netflix’s Wrestlers TV Review
Image
Plot: A group of underdog wrestlers try to make the big time.

Review: When people think of professional wrestling, they imagine the glitz and polish of the WWE, which has dominated the landscape for decades. Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler put a spotlight on what is the reality for most wrestlers out there, and that is the struggle they face to remain part of this business, to make money in it, to reconcile this grueling profession with their personal lives and individual demons. Netflix’s Wrestlers, a new docu-series from Emmy-winning filmmaker Greg Whiteley, has captured the everyday drama and struggle of professional wrestling in a way that has never been done before.

The series centers on Ohio Valley Wrestling. Chances are you’ve never heard of it. As someone who has grown up with professional wrestling, been in the ring a bit, and basically loves it with every fiber of my being,...

‘Wrestlers’ (2023) Review/Recap: A Nostalgia-Heavy Series About Wrestlers Trying To Find A Foothold Again
Image
Sports drama documentaries have had a resurgence in recent times. Netflix has released countless documentary series and movies in this genre to help people understand the amount of training, time, and investment that goes into making this one athlete or team world-famous. Wrestlers, directed by Greg Whiteley, is about a bunch of wrestlers from an organization who make sacrifices for the sake of their passion and entertainment.

Introduction

Wrestlers is a seven-part documentary series that talks primarily about Ohio Valley Wrestling Gym, which is the starting point for many wrestlers who want to make their passion a serious profession. The Ohio Valley Wrestling Gym, also known as Ovw, is run by ex-WWE fighter Al Snow, whose real name is Allen Ray Sarven. He talks about the amount of work that he and his team put in to entertain the audience, which loves watching their favorite wrestlers fight. Ovw is...

Netflix Docuseries ‘Wrestlers’ Follows Up ‘Cheer’ With a (Body) Slam Dunk: TV Review
Image
Everyone loves an underdog, but it’s possible nobody loves one more than Greg Whiteley. With Netflix hits “Cheer” and “Last Chance U,” the documentarian trained his eye on undergraduate athletes whose programs lack the resources or respect of a Big Ten institution. Each show made a compelling case for its subjects’ skill, tenacity and right to a bigger spotlight; “Cheer,” in particular, made stars of its protagonists, a charismatic squad of Texas students who performed death-defying stunts with a smile.

The second season of “Cheer” was forced to reckon with the fallout of its own success, taking some focus away from its namesake sport to address squad member Jerry Harris’ being sentenced to prison for soliciting sex from minors, as well as coach Monica Aldama’s stint on “Dancing With the Stars” and the uncomfortable transition from challenger to heavy favorite. Thankfully, Whiteley’s latest effort offers a fresh start.

Names including John Cena, Brock Lesnar, The Miz, Mickie James, Randy Orton, Brock Lesnar, Dave Bautista, Cm Punk, Cody Rhodes, and countless others honed their skills at one point or another there. New stars like “Mr. Pec-Tacular” Jessie Godderz of Big Brother and Impact Wrestling fame among others are featured. In the show’s seven episodes, cameras follow Snow as...

"Wrestlers" is a new 8-episode BBC Studios documentary TV series, directed by Greg Whiteley, streaming September 13, 2023 on Netflix:

"...wrestler Al Snow is attempting to keep professional wrestling league 'Ohio Valley Wrestling' (Ovf) afloat, navigating the brutal waters of mounting debt and the power struggles of new ownership.

"Ovf is located in Louisville, Kentucky, and once served as a premiere training ground for aspiring pro wrestlers like Brock Lesnar, John Cena, Dave Bautista, The Miz, and Randy Orton. In recent years, Ovf has struggled to keep its doors open, prompting Snow to sell a majority stake to a group of local businesses — one of whom is Matt Jones, one of the most popular radio personalities in the state of Kentucky..."

There to help guide the way is WWE legend Al Snow, now dedicated to training the superstars of tomorrow while keeping Ovw in business. Netflix has set the premiere date for a docuseries about the pro wrestling promotion Ohio Valley Wrestling, Variety has learned exclusively.

Titled “Wrestlers,” the show will debut on Netflix on Sept. 13. The series hails from director and executive producer Greg Whiteley, who previously created the hit docuseries “Cheer” and “Last Chance U” for Netflix.

A trailer and first look images from the series can be seen below.

Ohio Valley Wrestling, or Ovw, is based in Louisville, Ky. It was originally an independent promotion until it became a developmental territory for the WWE. Ten Best: Ecw Pay-Per-Views of All Time
Remember Ecw? I do. Extreme Championship Wrestling was the underground wrestling phenomenon that had a cult following in the 90s and still does today. It was on the fringe. During an era of pro-wrestling that consisted of WWF booking Doink the Clown, Bastion Booger and a more cartoony product and WCW was beginning to sign former WWF talent and starting to resemble the WWF a few years earlier Ecw was the grunge-rock scene, it was punk, it was hardcore, it was edgy. Before WWF Attitude, before WCW turned Hogan heel and flew to the moon on the back of the New World Order of wrestling, brother, there was Ecw doing something that influenced pro-wrestling forever.

Now, I am a lifelong WWF fan and I loved the cartoon era because I was a kid back then, and I loved the Attitude Era, because I was a teenager, and so on, and so forth.

Impact Wrestling to Use Ovw as Its Minor Leagues Again
Louisville, Kentucky’s Ohio Valley Wrestling will once again serve as the minor-league system for Impact Wrestling, feeding talent to the larger company.

The renewed partnership follows the two pro-wrestling promotions’ co-billed Louisville event, One Night Only: Clash in the Bluegrass. That Davis Arena show, which featured wrestlers from both organizations, sold out.

Ovw previously served as WWE’s minor leagues from 2000 to 2008. Alums include Brock Lesnar and John Cena.

Ohio Valley Wrestling was Impact’s training territory from 2012 to 2014.

Wretch Trailer Is The Blair Witch on Acid
2019 is trying hard to beat 2018 when it comes to horror movies, and it's on its way to accomplishing that, with a ton of big releases planned throughout the year. Check This Out: 'Space Story - A Bad Day' Mashup from Luc Bergeron
"Hello, Hal. Do you read me?" This is awesome! Editor/filmmaker Luc Bergeron, also known as Zapatou, has released a mashup video featuring scenes from 25 space movies all edited together to tell one 5-minute story. It's actually quite amusing, especially once things get going. The video is titled Space Story: A Bad Day and includes footage from pretty much every great sci-fi/space movie ever made - from Star Wars to The Fifth Element to 2001: A Space Odyssey to Apollo 13 to Moon to Armageddon to Avatar to Guardians of the Galaxy and everything else. This reminds me of the Hell's Club mashup but with space movies. Enjoy! Thanks to Kottke for the tip. Edited by Luc Bergeron, also known as Zapatou. He writes: "Here is my new Mashup. 25 movies in 4 minutes. The action starts at 1.40, but you have to watch the start for understanding story." Jokers, circus masters and demonic dolls. Which TV characters terrify you? Den Of Geek asked its writers that very question…

The subconscious is a terrible place; dark, mysterious and peopled by spectres from the past. As a bit of a laugh then, we sent our writers journeying into theirs and asked them to drag out any TV terrors they found lurking in the shadows.

Some television fears had been ensconced there since childhood, others were more recent tenants. Some were morally terrifying; human beings with icy hearts capable of atrocities, others were simply… atrocities.

Join us as we count down in order of terror from the sort-of-creepy to the downright terrifying, the 50 TV characters that, for whatever reason, give our writers chills. It’s by no means an exhaustive list, so feel free to fill in gaps by adding your own peculiar television nightmares below…

Mia Wasikowska
Somehow Johnny Depp's 'Alice in Wonderland' is getting a sequel and here are the posters
Mia Wasikowska
Back in 2010 — during the height of the post-“Avatar” green screen Renaissance — Disney released a live-action adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland” starring Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp. Directed by Tim Burton, the film was a darkly psychedelic trip through Wonderland. The film was visually stunning but deeply divisive among both critics and audiences. But love it or hate it — or have no strong feelings about it one way or the other — the movie made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that Disney is going back for a second helping, especially considering the recent success of their live-action “Cinderella.” Today at the annual Disney Expo, the teaser posters were unveiled for 2016’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass.” Image Credit: Walt Disney Studios Image Credit: Walt Disney Studios According to IMDb, Linda Wolverton returns as the screenwriter but Tim Burton has not. Robert Englund interview: The Last Showing, Freddy Krueger and horror
Horror legend Robert Englund talks about his new film The Last Showing, what was wrong with the Nightmare On Elm St remake, and more...

Sitting with Robert Englund deep in the bowels of a gilded London hotel, it becomes obvious just what a great storyteller he is. As he reminisces about his early acting career in such films as Five Easy Pieces or Hustle, or goes even further back to his childhood brushes with the horror genre, he talks in a soothing, sonorous voice that is a million miles away from his signature role of Freddy Krueger.

Then again, Englund doesn't look or sound like the character in his latest movie, either. In The Last Showing, a psychological horror thriller written and directed by the UK's Phil Hawkins, Englund plays Stuart, a once proud projectionist who, thanks to the advent of digital cinema, finds himself busted down to the lowly...

And no expense will be spared for the studio’s second most expensive production to date (second only to Avatar), the most expensive comic book film ever.

The final full-length X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer – the best one yet – debuted two weeks ago and Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters this week and even features a button during the credits teasing the X-Men. The movie’s cast – one of the X-Men’s best selling points - will be doing the press rounds worldwide and franchise star Hugh Jackman will unsurprisingly doing most of the leg work.

He even made an appearing at last night’s WWE Monday Night Raw. Jackman ...

Marc Alan Fishman: WWE and A Future For Comics
Last Wednesday, Vince McMahon announced the launching of the WWE Network. Suffice to say it was well received by his hardcore fans just as he’d hoped. To use a bit of hyperbole – which all things considered, seems apropos – the self-made millionaire stands to become a billionaire with the launch.

It’s many things, but above all else, it’s a stroke of genius in the modern era of content delivery. Comic companies might want to take note… but I’m getting ahead of myself.

The WWE Network would appear to just be Netflix for hillbillies, but truly those who aren’t in-the-know, and quick-to-judge are missing out the insane deal the WWE is offering. For $9.95 a month (purchased in six month blocks, with a potential discount for year long subscriptions forthcoming), users get access to every pay-per-view since 1985 from the WWE, as well as rival companies WCW and Ecw.

"Jurassic Park" Joins The Billion Club
It took twenty years but it finally did it - Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" has earned a membership in the billion dollar movies club. The original film took in around $920 million in unadjusted worldwide grosses back in 1993.

The 3D global re-release has now added around $90 million to that total since it began rolling out in April, taking it to just over $1 billion. The re-release also took in a whopping $28.8 million in its opening weekend in China this past weekend.

Other films in the global billion dollar box-office club include "Avatar," "Titanic," "Marvel's The Avengers," "Iron Man 3," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," "Skyfall," "The Dark Knight Rises," "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," "Toy Story 3," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," "Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace,...

'Pacific Rim' Family Review: 5 Things Every Parent Should Know About the Monster Sci-Fi Flick
"Pacific Rim" is director Guillermo del Toro's latest sci-fi action epic, and the result is an entertaining battle between huge "Godzilla"-like creatures (called the Kaiju) and ginormous man-made weapon-ized robots (called Jaeger -- "hunter" in German) piloted by human soldiers. As per usual in these movies, the extinction of humanity is a very real possibility if the small circle of brave Jaeger pilots doesn't succeed. There's humor (courtesy of Charlie Day, who plays a Kaiju researcher, and Ron Perlman, who's a fabulously outfitted black-market dealer), romance, and staggeringly massive action sequences, so be prepared to take your tweens and teens to see "Pacific Rim."

But first, here are five questions to consider before taking the kids to see "Pacific Rim."

1. Is your kid freaked out by monsters? If there's one thing director Guillermo del Toro is known for, it's his big, scary creatures ("Pan's Labyrinth" "Hellboy," "Hellboy II'). In "Pacific Rim,...

WWE: 4 Best In Your House PPVs
Back in 1995, the WWF was offering five PPVs – Rumble, WrestleMania, Kotr, Summerslam and Survivor Series – at $30 apiece. The idea behind the concept was that a shorter (2 hours compared to 3) and cheaper ($15 to start with) PPVs in months without a major event would give them an edge over the increasing WCW threat.

You may notice that the earliest PPV included was in February ’97, despite the first event being held almost two years prior. The problem was that, although some of the main events were exceptional, the overall cards were poor because the WWF didn’t have a brilliant roster. The fact that the WWF seemed obsessed with stipulations at the time didn’t help – Razor Ramon vs. 1-2-3 Kid in a Cry-baby Match comes to mind.

Iyh: Mind Games is a perfect example. Shawn Michaels defended the WWF Championship against Mankind, in a brilliant thirty minute bout. While the main event was excellent,...

Will platoon of Gallipoli films give Turkish audiences battle fatigue?
Hollywood often produces two films on one subject, but the six movies based on the Battle of Çanakkale are a sign of a healthy domestic market for Turkish products

Maybe one sign of a fully matured film industry is when it's capable of spewing out an Olympus Has Fallen and a White House Down at the same time – coinciding films with identical subjects. One of those little zeitgeist clots that suggest creative minds running in parallel, in a highly evolved community driven by the relentless background hum of close competition – and also, all those scripts passing between studios, with ample opportunities for intellectual-property theft. Mostly, these weird convergences seem to come in pairs: Deep Impact and Armageddon, A Bug's Life and Antz, and so on.

So what does it say about the emerging Turkish industry that it has six movies on the same subject either recently on release or imminent?...

Overtime's Brian Cunningham Reveals Insider Filmmaker Details
The horror-comedy Overtime: The Movie (review) starring Al Snow and John Wells is now available. One of the film's creators, Brain Cunningham, has just released insider details of how filmmakers can create their own film and get it into Walmart stores entitled How to Make a Movie for $2,700.

Learn how to make your own horror film now!

How to Make a Movie (and get it into Walmart) for $2,700

In 2010, my partner and I began work on a script called “Overtime.” It started as a pet project...something for us to do on the side while we made our living shooting and editing commercial video at a Louisville, Kentucky production company.

Nearly three years later, that project has grown to something neither Matt nor myself could have ever imagined at the start. “Overtime,” a hit-man vs. zombie-aliens action/comedy starring Tna Impact Wrestling’s Al Snow, was released on Blu-ray...

WWE and Tna's Al Snow, Matt Niehoff, and Brian Cunningham Talk Overtime
Okay, kids! Overtime: The Movie (review) releases to the masses on January 1, 2013, and fans will laugh until their eyes bleed in this latest sliver of horror/sci-fi lunacy.

We recently had the opportunity to set down with WWE Superstar Al Snow and the creative geniuses behind the film - Matt Niehoff and Brian Cunningham.

Amanda Dyar: Overtime stars wrestling legend Al Snow and John Wells as the hit duo Raph and Max. How did you guys go about recruiting these two actors for the roles, and what directing tips did you give the duo that allowed them to work so well together?

Matt Niehoff: As a director, I wish this answer was more exotic. But honestly, John Wells and I used to play in bands together back in our younger years (there was always a debate on who had the bigger arms back then... Now... It's John). Anyway,...

Blu Review: Wizards – Old School Animation is Still Beautiful
Wizards is an interesting animated film. At first glance, it is about good vs. evil as the film sets up a clear dichotomy in the beginning. That idea travels through the whole film and never becomes convoluted, but Wizards is more than that. Magic, technology, and Armageddon play a large role as well. The film wants to spread some sort of message about the errors of mankind’s ability to create things that kill and it also wants to promote believing in some sort of indefinable magic. I wanted to start off talking about this because Wizards is not an ordinary animated film and to an extent, not even a kid’s film. Wizards is mature in its own right, and should be. This spewed out of the mind of Raplh Bakshi, so, why would it be normal?

You may know Bakshi for his other animated films which dealt with...

Monstrous Comics for the Horrible Holidays
Garth Ennis at an event for Preacher (2016)
Looking for an excuse to revel in blood and body parts while the rest of the world goes caroling? Trying to find something to comfort your disturbed soul during December’s holiday stress and mayhem? Since Hollywood seems to stay away from scares during the Yuletide season, look no further than your local comic shop. Comic book publishers have been delivering the goods when it comes to horror series lately, and these titles are sure to have you giggling ghoulishly from now to the New Year. So snap them up. Or, even better—hand the single issues out as holiday presents to insufferable relatives who insist on displaying “holiday cheer”. A bit of merry doom will do them good.

Escapism, invasion, sequels and resentment: the cinema trends of 2011
What do this year’s most successful Hollywood films say about our changing tastes, and how do they compare to previous years? Ryan finds out…

At first glance, a look at this year’s ten highest grossing movies reveals nothing more than the usual diet of sequels and effects-filled blockbusters. The final Harry Potter movie made more than $1.3bn. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon and Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides made more than $1bn, in spite of middling reviews. The rest of the year’s hits were largely dominated by computer-animated movies for the family crowd: Kung Fu Panda 2, The Smurfs, Cars 2 and Rio all made the top ten.

Look a little more closely, though, and you’ll see that this year’s hit films reveal numerous common themes, and tell us a great deal about movie-going appetites and contemporary fears…

Why Are We Getting Two Snow White Movies Next Year?
Certain stories stick with us as a culture, providing imagery that can cause a flood of emotions to most of the general populace. These themes, tracing back to the earliest orally told tales, resonate with us in ways we aren’t always fully conscious of: the lone hero’s triumph over oppressive evil, the hilarious case of mistaken identity leading to wacky hi jinks, two people falling in love despite all the odds being against them. We are familiar with all of these stories and they affect us in amazing ways. The characters and settings may change, but ultimately all of our favorite stories borrow from what’s come before, building on a tradition of fictive conventions going back to ancient times.

Next year, two movies will be released in theaters based on the classic Grimm’s Fairy Tale, Snow White. In March, Mirror Mirror, a Julia Roberts vehicle that...
