After World War II, her family had to change its surname from "Sass" into "Saß" because the East German officials thought that it was a reminder of the Nazi organizations SA and SS. After the German reunification in 1990, Katrin Sass decided to call her "Sass" again.

Daughter of Marga Heiden.

Started her stage career at the Kleist Theatre in Frankfurt/Oder (1981).

Worked as telephone operator before starting her acting career.
