Some high-profile titles might seem missing: For example, Netflix’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and “Senna,” its biggest TV productions to date in Latin America. Voting, however, began before either title was released.

Image
Last August, Ximena Sariñana had a crazy idea: What if Mexico City hosted a massive festival à la Corona Capital, but made up of only women-led acts? The Mexican singer hit up her friend and singer Francisca Valenzuela who launched a similar fest Ruidosa Fest in Chile, and asked Ocesa promoter Itzel Gonzalez Flores out to dinner to present her with the idea. They immediately got to work.

“After our chat, we knew. ‘It’s time,’” recounts Sariñana. “In two months, Itzel already had a team and we started setting everything up.

Girl Ultra Thinks the ‘Latin Boom’ Is a Myth
There’s never been a more opportune time for Latinx artists to impact contemporary R&b than right now. Not that Latinos in R&b are an entirely new phenomenon — as evidenced by old school Chicano Soul artists like the Royal Jesters, or proto-rockeros Cannibal and the Headhunters, who once toured with the Beatles. Yet in recent years, a growing number of new voices have supplemented the genre with touches of Latinidad: including Chicano Batman, Kali Uchis, and Omar Apollo. Nevertheless, when you think of R&b hotbeds, Mexico isn...

Gloria Gaynor
Now 50 years after the Stonewall Riots, the month of June has become synonymous with Lgbtq Pride. ‘Tis the season for campy pop classics to start creeping back into the airwaves — as well as seasonal releases that teeter between opportunistic cash grabs and gifts of sweaty, dancefloor catharsis. But don’t be deceived; timeless anthems Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” and Sylvester’s “Mighty Real” still speak to the Lgbtq community’s fears, heartbreaks and life-affirming quests for authenticity, metabolized into song. In the case of Mexican singer-songwriter Juan Manuel Torreblanca,...

From ‘La Bamba’ to ‘Adiós Amor’: How Regional Mexican Music Stays Relevant
As Latin urban music continues to pervade the contemporary pop stratosphere — with the commercial growth of reggaeton and trap en español outpacing that of any other genre — it’s worth noting that regional Mexican music is also gaining speed. While it is true that the south-of-the-border genre has remained an enduring force within Spanish-speaking communities between the U.S. and Mexico for decades, its impact is arguably much bigger than what today’s Latin pop charts reflect.

“Through new forms of technology and social media, [regional Mexican music] is reaching unprecedented places. It...

Ximena Sariñana
Mexican Pop Trailblazer Ximena Sariñana Claims the Night for Women and Girls
Ximena Sariñana
Ximena Sariñana is out of touch. She’s not making Pepsi commercials for international markets, nor is she stoking political debates via Instagram. She’s not making a trendy sound like “Chicano Soul” — in fact, she doesn’t even know what that is. She’s not a Grammy darling, nor someone who rakes in many Pazz & Jop votes among music critics.

That’s not to call her irrelevant, though. Sariñana’s been in the public eye since she was nine years old, when she was cast in a small role in Hasta Morir,...

Dillon Francis on New Spanish-Language Album ‘Wut Wut,’ Edm’s Latin Pop Crossover
James Van Der Beek, Bobby Lee, Dora Madison, Michael Croner, and Dillon Francis in What Would Diplo Do? (2017)
Best known for his arena-caliber Edm and bombastic bass drops, Los Angeles-born DJ-producer Dillon Francis has a long and storied history with Latin music. He began releasing mostly dubstep tracks in 2010, when the then-nascent moombahton genre — which combines electro-house with Latin-tinged reggaeton beats — first took the Internet by storm. Francis then notched his first major hit in 2011 via “Que Que,” a Spanish-language track alongside mentor and frequent collaborator Diplo, featuring Dominican-American artist Maluca. Fast-forward to 2018, and Francis has reached the cusp of a new career chapter: Dillon Francis, Latin pop crossover star.

DJ-producer Dillon Francis has announced the release date for his forthcoming Spanish language studio album. Wut Wut will drop on September 28th via his Idgafos label.

“The whole thing started from the Westside Ep in 2011. I had just discovered moombahton and began experimenting with Latin styles,” Francis said in a statement. “For my second album, I wanted to create one cohesive vision, since I now have a better understanding about what that means. Latin music is very close to my heart, and I knew this would be fun. I was...

Latin Artists Take Over Coachella in 2018
It’s the time of year when festivalgoers have passed the white-knuckle phase of purchasing a wristband for the annual California desert phenomenon known as Coachella, which takes place over two consecutive weekends on April 13–15 and April 20–22. Now it’s time to explore the extensive and talented lineup.

The fest’s organizers at Goldenvoice have a reputation for keeping things fresh — see the Tupac Shakur hologram on stage with Snoop Dogg in 2012. Indeed, while it was originally billed as an indie rock festival, this year’s Music and Arts Festival will go without a single rock headliner for the first time.

During Tuesday night's brand-new episode of "Glee," McKinley High School power couples old and new went toe-to-toe in a battle of duets. But only one pair emerged a clear winner. While their cohorts opted for show tunes and Muzak, burgeoning lovebirds Quinn (Dianna Agron) and Sam (newcomer Chord Overstreet) shined with their take on the adorable pop rock tune (not to mention inevitable prom and wedding staple) "Lucky."

Released on Jason Mraz's 2008 album We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things, the singer-songwriter's duet with fellow mellow crooner Colbie Caillat became a beloved, bubbly hit that just begs you to sing along (its catchy chorus goes, "I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend/ Lucky to have been where I have...
