Seeing as how the 1980s gave us four Halloween movies, five Elm Streets and no less than eight Friday the 13ths, it’s pretty easy to see why the decade is considered the golden age of slasher flicks. Throw in all the lesser known psycho-killer/dead teenager flicks from the era that have since gone on to become bona fide cult classics – the Sleepaway Camp trilogy, Maniac, Pieces, etc. – and it’s pretty much indisputable that the Reagan years were indeed the glory days of cinematic mass murder.
Even in a decade glutted with degenerate cinema classics like My Bloody Valentine and Silent Night, Deadly Night, there nonetheless remain several unsung, unheralded slasher movies from the 1980s that definitely deserve more retroactive respect and reverence. Sure, none of the following flicks may be on par with subgenre heavy hitters like Black Christmas or Twitch of the Death Nerve, but they...

One of my favorite entries in my favorite franchise, the Friday the 13th sequel Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter features stuntman Ted White as the hockey-masked horror icon Jason Voorhees, and he is widely considered to be one of the best Jason performers in the entire series. Sadly, White passed away in 2022 at the age of 96 – but well before he passed away, he provided the foreword for his son Michael Bayouth’s memoir In the Shadows of Giants: True Stories From The Son of a Hollywood Stuntman, which is available for purchase at This Link. To promote the book, Bayouth recently shared an excerpt that tells a fun story from the set of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. You can check it out below.

While fans are waiting for Jason Voorhees and Friday the 13th’s return, that hasn't stopped companies from celebrating the franchise since the iconic slasher series turned 45 this year. Neca has been a driving force in keeping Jason’s pop culture fame alive in the 16 years since his last bloody film. Now, with Crystal Lake on the horizon, Neca has unveiled their latest Friday the 13th figure from an unlikely place.
Revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, photos courtesy of Toyark.com, Neca’s next Jason Voorhees figure in their Ultimate seven-inch horror figure collection is from Friday the 13th: The Game. Specifically based on an original design by iconic genre makeup artist Tom Savini. He was also the original designer of the character for the 1980 film. This is an interpretation of what Jason may have looked like after Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. The figure sees Jason’s...

There are certain joys in cinema that can’t be replaced or often times replicated. While showing someone you love one of your favorite movies can be a terrifying experience, especially if they don’t like it, or maybe they already knew too much about it and aren’t wowed, this experience builds even more if the movie has that One scene or that One twist that you know is coming but your viewing partner is blissfully unaware. For me, its showing The Usual Suspects to someone who somehow doesn’t know the secret of Keyser Söze or watching the tense body of a loved one jump out of their seat when R.J. MacReady tells us that Gary is going to be the Thing only for someone else’s blood to jump away from the hot needle. As fun as being the source of someone else’s thrill and living vicariously through them is,...

Following festival acclaim for his short Three Houses Down, Huffer teams with Screamify to develop a practical-effects-driven folk horror feature slated for a 2026 release.
Screamify, the independent horror streaming platform, has signed a development deal with writer/director Ty Huffer to produce and distribute his first feature-length horror film, slated for release in 2026. The project, currently untitled, is planned as a modern folk-horror tale involving a Norwegian black metal band, a witch, and a farm family. Huffer intends to shoot the film using all practical effects with no AI technology, staying true to the hands-on gore and creature work that characterized his earlier projects. The FX team includes award-winning artists James Fairley and Ret Harrison (Three Houses Down), a graduate of Tom Savini’s Special Make-Up Effects program. This deal marks Screamify’s latest venture into original content production, aligning with the platform’s mission to champion independent horror filmmakers...

Back in 1968, George A. Romero made his feature directorial debut with one of the greatest horror movies ever made, Night of the Living Dead – and while doing so, he also introduced the world to flesh-eating ghouls that became a new definition for the world “zombie.” Romero, who passed away in 2017, went on to make several more zombie movies over the decades… and recently, his daughter Tina Romero revealed that she’s making her own feature directorial debut with a zombie movie called Queens of the Dead. That movie had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival last month – and won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Film there! Now, Deadline reports that it has secured North American distribution through Independent Film Company (formerly IFC) and the Shudder streaming service. A specific release date has not yet been announced, but Independent Film Company has let it be known that they...

It’s so very hard to consider any movie perfect. Looking at rankings like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, or other cinema scores, you will be hard pressed to find a consistent 10/10 or perfect score on something. Go deeper and it’s damn near impossible to unite a fanbase into something or find something genre specific to align in the right ways for it to become a universal classic. The Shawshank Redemption, Goodfellas, The Lion King, and a handful of others can be used as examples, but what about horror? Horror is nearly as divisive as the Marvel or Star Wars fan base with even more options to choose from when you break down the various subgenres. For me, anthology films will always hold a special spot, and I have always sought them out. The problem with many of them is that they range from undercooked to flawed but fun. It would...

In 1968, director George A. Romero re-defined the word “zombie” with his feature debut Night of the Living Dead, one of the most highly respected and beloved horror movies ever made. Unfortunately, Romero and his collaborators didn’t make as much money off of that film as they should have, due to a copyright mistake that instantly put Night of the Living Dead in the public domain. So twenty-two years later they decided to produce a remake with legendary special effects artist Tom Savini directing. The 1990 version of Night of the Living Dead (watch it Here) didn’t have the smoothest production – in fact, Savini has described the experience of making Night ’90 as “the worst nightmare of my life,” and says that the finished film only represents a small percentage of the vision he had for it. The rest was lost due to budgetary limitations, clashes with the producers, and the wrath of the MPAA…...

Tom Savini‘s 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead will celebrate its 35th anniversary with a SteelBook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray release on September 23 via Sony.
In addition to the theatrical version, a new uncensored cut is included, both newly restored in 4K with Dolby Vision. Supervised by Savini, the alternate cut restores gore that was originally cut to avoid an X rating, in addition to starting in black and white before transitioning to color.
“Yes finally,” Savini wrote on Instagram. “Completely uncut, uncensored, and as I intended 35 years ago… it is black and white for a bit, as a homage to the original, and then color opens the curtain to my remake.”

The George A. Romero / Stephen King horror anthology Creepshow is one of my all-time favorite movies – and so is the Michael Gornick-directed sequel Creepshow 2, which I’ve probably watched even more times than its predecessor. I love everything about Creepshow 2, so I was very glad to hear the news that Arrow Video is giving the film a 4K Uhd release in the US, the UK, and Canada. The release date is September 30th, and copies can be pre-ordered through a variety of links (check out the list on Arrow Video’s Facebook page), including This One.
Directed by Gornick from a screenplay by George A. Romero (based on stories written by Stephen King), Creepshow 2 has the following synopsis: Join our old friend, the rotting Creep himself, as he introduces this horror anthology which presents gruesome looks at three tales of horror: a hit-and-run driver in “The Hitchhiker...

For decades, fans of George A. Romero mourned the loss of the black and white, three and a half hour director’s cut of his film Martin. On an audio commentary, Romero once said something along the lines of the “greatest tragedy of his career” was that the film reels containing his Martin director’s cut went missing. Romero passed away in 2017, but then the director’s cut film reels were somehow finally been located in 2021 and went up for auction at Julien’s. Martin cinematographer Michael Gornick said this director’s cut “was always Romero’s preferred version. May it soon return safely to the custody of Richard Rubinstein and Braddock Associates for digital revitalization and distribution to the world.” Sadly, producer Richard Rubinstein made it clear that he did not want the 3-hour version of the movie making its way out into the world, for whatever reason. The...

One era of the Friday the 13th franchise officially came to an end on January 1st, when the servers for Friday the 13th: The Game – an awesome game that was hindered by the legal issues the franchise went through in recent years – were shut down at the request of the rights holders. A new era is about to begin, with Linda Cardellini having been officially cast as Pamela Voorhees in the Peacock streaming series Crystal Lake. As we sit in this space between eras, we still have the movies to watch over and over again. So let’s take a look at this Friday the 13th Movies Ranked list!
While this list is all in good fun, I have to admit that I found it to be surprisingly difficult to put together. That’s because the Friday the 13th franchise is my favorite of all franchises and I love every one of these films.

Few films can coast on good intentions alone, but low-budget zombie romp “Queens of the Dead” comes close. Directed by Tina Romero, the delightful feature debut is a horror comedy chock-full of fun and meaningful ideas, most of which stop just short of fruition. Romero is notably the daughter of zombie movie progenitor George A. Romero (of “Night of the Living Dead” fame), and she channels her father’s decades-long fascination with undead ghouls as cinematic symbols for society at large. By filtering familiar hallmarks through a distinctly queer story set at a drag show gone awry, she channels the genre’s uglier, edgier leanings into a glamorous farce with a beating heart.
“Queens of the Dead” is the kind of movie that requires going with the flow — not by turning your brain off, but by keeping it especially sharp while sidelining expectations of refinement. Its aesthetic approach seldom lives...

At the world premiere of Terrifier 3, franchise writer/director Damien Leone said there will be a Terrifier 4 – and he later said he thinks that will be the last entry in the franchise, because he doesn’t want it to wear out his welcome. (Although he has also said that Terrifier 5 might be required to properly wrap up the story.) We’ve heard that Leone plans to reveal Art the Clown’s origin in the new sequel, and now he has revealed to Cris Parker of 3C Films on YouTube that Art’s backstory will be told in the first 15 minutes of Terrifier 4! So if you’ve been wondering how this guy came to be, you’re going to get the information right up front in the next sequel.
Leone said, “I know this word gets used a lot, but it’s gonna be epic. It’s not gonna disappoint.

War films are horror films, aren’t they? Both genres explore inevitable death intertwined with moral quandaries and are full of suspense. Come and See is often hailed as one of the scariest films and Son of Saul almost plays like a found footage in Auschwitz.
There is a thin line between the two, but military horror goes further by blending the literal and figurative. This hybrid subgenre repeatedly uses the zombie as the antagonist of choice, a reason identified by Scholar Kevin Wetmore in Post-9/11 Horror in American Cinema: “Zombies cannot be reasoned with, cannot be negotiated with, they seek only to replicate themselves, which also makes them an excellent metaphor for terrorists.”

High school is hell, and navigating it is terrifying in and of itself, so it’s no surprise that it’s a frequent setting in horror. Even less surprising is how it transforms major milestones of the high school experience, like school dances, into a lethal horror nightmare.
This week brings the arrival of Netflix’s Fear Street: Prom Night, a standalone installment that aims to slaughter the competition of hopeful prom queen candidates. It’s far from the only horror movie to explore the social pressures and teen angst that come with formal events; how many adaptations of Carrie are there now?
While spring tends to be peak prom season, this week’s streaming picks are dedicated to high school dance set horror movies that transform the setting into slaying grounds.

A reunion of the 1996 vampire action film From Dusk Till Dawn has happened, but it isn't for a sequel or a reboot. Instead, director Robert Rodriguez decided to listen to a fan's request and revisit the horror universe that introduced us to Santánico Pandemonium. How exactly? Through a music video that'll leave you wanting more of Rodriguez's unique approach to the vampire genre.
The music video is "The End," by heavy metal band Mammoth. Band leader Wolfgang Van Halen, the son of guitar legend Eddie, stars in the video where the band arrives at a shady bar where their tunes aren't exactly welcome. After receiving a degree in chemical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney, Dolph Lundgren started his acting career with a James Bond film (A View to a Kill) in 1985, quickly followed by his iconic performance as Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, and then a string of action films. With a career spanning five decades, the man has kept busy, playing over 100 parts… and now, we have taken on the task of picking some of his best movies. Here we go:

The 1980s was a tremendous decade for horror movies. We saw the birth of new icons, and were treated to a plethora of practical effects from filmmakers who pushed the limits of acceptable taste. Yet sandwiched in between the likes of Freddy Kruger, Jason Voorhees, and effects wizard Tom Savini was perhaps one of the best supernatural horror movies ever made that doesn't get nearly the love that it should. Maybe now it will get the recognition it deserves thanks to star Heather Graham, who is set to lead a new spin on the true story that inspired 1982's The Entity.
Deadline reports that Graham is set to lead Entity Within, which comes by way of Insidious and Paranormal Activity producer Steven Schneider. Directed by Nick Simon, the film isn't a remake in the traditional sense, but rather a new look at one of the most documented paranormal cases in...

Whether it’s the original director or not, following up all time classics in a series is a tall task. We have seen it with many of the greatest movies of all time like Rick Rosenthal having to follow up John Carpenter and Halloween or John Boorman following up William Friedkin and The Exorcist. Sometimes the original director has a go at it for contractual obligations like Tobe Hooper and Cannon films giving us Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 or for passion like John Carpenter himself electing to attempt to give us a better version of Escape from New York but in Los Angeles. Sorry, John, we still think you are wrong about that one. One director that made a career of it was George Romero. While he certainly had a varied career with things like Knightriders, Creepshow, and Monkey Shines, he is also the godfather of modern zombie horror. After Night of the Living Dead...

Isolated cabins, eerie woods, and way too many sharp objects — need we say more?
I watched the horror-comedy “Hell of a Summer” this weekend, and it got me thinking about why summer camps keep popping up as the perfect horror setting. There’s something nostalgic — and deeply unsettling — about being isolated in the woods, far from help. Plus, horror loves its simple setups: one location, one killer, and plenty of unsuspecting victims. So, here’s my top seven horror movies set at summer camp, guaranteed to make you think twice about that lakeside getaway.

Kevin Bacon is having something of a full-circle moment with his latest appearance in The Bondsman, a supernatural thriller series that recently landed on Prime Video to great acclaim. In the series, he plays bounty hunter Hub Halloran, who is killed by rival criminals and then resurrected by the Devil in order to track down demons to banish them back to hell – imagine an odd lovechild of John Constantine and Dog the Bounty Hunter, and you’re part way there.
In the opening episode, audiences see Halloran meet his demise with a brutal throat-slashing, which is not too dissimilar to his famous death scene in Friday the 13th 45 years ago. One thing that has changed a lot, though, is the way such moments are filmed, and as Bacon recalled to CinemaBlend, things have become a lot easier on actors over the years. He said:

This list includes descriptions of violent and graphic movie scenes that may be disturbing to some readers.
In horror movies, the gore isn't just blood and guts designed to repulse — on the contrary, it's an effective storytelling device to convey the consequences and brutality of a scene. It's also a beautifully disgusting art form with superstars as important as scream queens and slashers in horror films. Makeup artists like Rick Baker and Tom Savini have taken the genre from cheesy to realistically gory with a chef's kiss.
To a true gore aficionado, the decapitations and disembowelments are just as key to the movie as the plot or casting. CGI can create everything from the fantastic to the mundane, but it still can't generate believable gore. The best, goriest movies ever made have terrifying, compelling stories and buckets of practical effects, blood, and innards.

A brutal killer is stalking the streets of New York City; a man dressed as a police officer. He lures victims in with a false sense of security, traps them with the authority an officer of the law commands, and he murders them, whether they’re guilty or innocent. It took a couple of genre icons to get this idea into production and more icons to deal with the threat on the screen. This is the story of Maniac Cop, and we’re going to find out what happened to this horror movie.
It all began with the 1980 slasher Maniac. The mainstream feature directorial debut of William Lustig, the film caught a lot of attention when it was released, especially for the shocking moments of violence, featuring Tom Savini gore effects. Lustig followed that up with the 1982 action thriller Vigilante, which gained a cult following, but wasn’t a financial success at first.

The Academy Award for Best Makeup is one of the youngest Oscars. It was first handed out in 1981, one year after the Academy took heat for not having a specific award that could recognize Christopher Tucker's remarkable work for David Lynch's "The Elephant Man." Really, though, there had been mounting pressure on the Academy to honor makeup effects since the early 1970s, when Dick Smith helped Marlon Brando become Don Vito Corleone in "The Godfather" and transformed young Linda Blair into a demon in "The Exorcist."
The first Oscar for Best Makeup went to the great Rick Baker for "An American Werewolf in London," and it felt like validation for horror fans the world over. Our genre would probably never be deemed worthy of major Oscars, but here was a category that it would likely own for decades to come, because no one was doing more revolutionary work...

Tony Todd, prolific actor and horror icon, passed away in 2024, leaving behind an impressive filmography full of memorable roles. Beginning with his first real Hollywood role as Sergeant Warren in Oliver Stone's Oscar-winning "Platoon," Todd then began his journey towards becoming a horror legend by playing Ben in Tom Savini's "Night of the Living Dead" remake — a major milestone on his path to playing the titular "Candyman" in Bernard Rose's celebrated 1992 supernatural horror film. He'd continue his run as a staple of the horror genre after that, ultimately becoming the personification of Death in the "Final Destination" film series.
But horror wasn't the only genre that Todd became known for. The imposing, six-foot five-inch star also made a name for himself in beloved sci-fi series, playing Kurn, the Klingon brother of Worf in both "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine." In fact, Todd once...

Many of our favorite Masters of Horror actually found themselves being accidentally thrust into this position after an early genre success, with very few of them actively choosing to only tell scary stories. From Stephen King to John Carpenter, there are many such cases, but I think that one of the most curious examples of a renaissance man who found himself backed into a spooky corner is that of the legendary George A. Romero.
The father of the modern zombie movie, Romero was also a deeply passionate idealist and multitalented artist with ideas spanning multiple genres. And while most of his fans focus on success of his Living Dead films (and the occasional obscure gem like Martin), today I’d like to discuss the director’s most overlooked feature, 1981’s Knightriders – a film that I think will appeal to hardcore horror fans despite featuring almost none of Romero’s penchant for exaggerated blood and guts.

Edward Furlong helped save humanity in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and now he has to do it again in Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep.
Based on H.P. Lovecraft‘s 1919 short story “Beyond the Wall of Sleep,” the cosmic horror film hits VOD on March 4 from Breaking Glass Pictures.
It’s the third Lovecraft adaptation from writer-director Chad Ferrin, following 2020’s The Deep Ones and 2024’s The Old Ones.
Renowned oneirologist Ambrose London is summoned to Arkham Asylum to investigate a bizarre split-personality case involving a patient seemingly possessed by a 122-year-old colonial peasant. When I first read the news that one of my favorite modern directors, Osgood Perkins, would be directing The Monkey, the article was accompanied by a familiar image: a toy monkey with a cracked-out face, banging two cymbals together. My brain immediately went to George A. Romero’s underappreciated 1988 film, Monkey Shines.
I also immediately assumed Monkey Shines was based on a King story—a natural assumption. What hasn’t King written at this point, after all? In reality, of course, Perkins/King’s The Monkey has absolutely nothing to do with Romero’s Monkey Shines. But while the two properties aren’t officially connected apart from their similar imagery – oddly enough, Perkins had to redesign the toy monkey from King’s story due to a Disney copyright! – they do have a few things in common. Both Monkey Shines and The Monkey feature bat-shit crazy stories full of dark humor,...

Day of the Dead actor Anthony Dileo Jr. passed away on Friday night due to complications from Covid.
A frequent collaborator of George A. Romero, Dileo played Pvt. Miguel Salazar in the 1985 zombie classic, in addition to appearing in Knightriders, Monkey Shines, and Two Evil Eyes.
Sometimes credited as Tim Dileo or Antone Dileo, the actor also played a zombie and worked as a production assistant on Tom Savini‘s remake of Night of the Living Dead, which Romero produced.
“It is with great sadness that I let you all know that my dear friend and colleague Anthony Dileo passed away last night from Covid,” Dileo‘s Day of the Dead co-star Lori Cardille shared on Facebook yesterday.
“Tim was filled with love for nature, his beloved animals, family and friends and fans. He made me laugh every day while making Day of the Dead. Tim was an accomplished pianist with a beautiful voice.

After the enormous success of Terrifier 3, there never should have been any doubt that Damien Leone would be hard at work on Terrifier 4 as soon as possible. If you're a fan of old-school horror, then you're probably familiar with the name Tom Savini. If you're not, then you’ve almost definitely seen a movie he’s played a role in making, as Savini is mostly celebrated for his work as a make-up and special effects guru, doing for horror what someone like Stan Winston did for science fiction. Also, he’s acted in a bunch of movies, and has even tried his hand at directing feature films, too.

At the world premiere of the recently released Terrifier 3, franchise writer/director Damien Leone said there will be a Terrifier 4 – and he later said he thinks that will be the last entry in the franchise, because he doesn’t want it to wear out his welcome. (Although he has gone on to admit that Terrifier 5 might be required to properly wrap up the story.) Now, he has taken to social media to declare that he’s determined to find “the sweet spot” in the balance between gore and plot.
In response to an X user writer, “The Terrifier franchise would have been better if it was less plot-based and more kill-based,” Leone wrote, “Man, these guys aren’t making it easy for me are they? It’s either ‘Terrifier has absolutely no plot and is just mindless gore’ or ‘Terrifier has too much plot and not enough gore...
