After making waves at Cannes, the new drama movie The History of Sound is getting ready to take over the world — and maybe kick off its awards season run. Led by Paul Mescal (Gladiator II) and Josh O'Connor (Challengers), the movie centers around two music lovers who bond over their passion for folk music and end up falling in love during the less-than-gay-friendly era of the early 20th century and against the backdrop of WWI. Mubi is handling the distribution, and the movie is set to premiere on September 17. You can check out the trailer in this article.
The trailer for The History of Sound makes it clear that music is not just a random element in the story. It opens with Mescal's character Lionel revealing that he has such a strong connection with music that he can "see" it ever since he was a kid. He then grows up...

"There was a moment when I realized that I had probably never been as happy as I was when collecting songs.." Mubi has revealed the first official trailer for a heartrending, romantic film titled The History of Sound, made by acclaimed South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus. This premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival a few months ago to mixed reviews - some raves, but plenty of negative reviews as well. Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor play star-crossed lovers Lionel and David in the film - a sweeping, moving and tender romance from Oliver Hermanus. Two young men during World War I set out to record the lives, voices and music of their American countrymen. They're both in love with folk music and walk through the forests of Maine to find and record these songs forever. But little do they know this will change the course of both of their lives.

One of this year’s funniest comedies, Friendship, is available to rent or purchase on Digital! You can rent the Tim Robinson-led film for $19.99 or buy the feature digitally for $24.99 on Prime Video, Apple TV, and other video-on-demand platforms. If physical media is your poison, you can pre-purchase the movie on Blu-ray and DVD at participating retailers. The physical version of Friendship does not have a release date, but A24 should let us know when it’s coming to shelves soon.
Written and directed by Andrew DeYoung, the film stars Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson) and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) in the story of a suburban dad (Robinson) who becomes hellbent on being BFFs with his charismatic new neighbor (Rudd). In his review, Chris Bumbray wrote that the film is, in addition to being very funny, “surprisingly nuanced about how hard it is to make friends as an adult male.

Paul Mescal continues to emerge as one of the finest young actors working today. The Irish actor rose to fame for his lead role in the BBC/Hulu miniseries Normal People, for which he earned an Emmy nomination. From there, Mescal transitioned to film with his feature debut in The Lost Daughter and quickly earned his first Academy Award nomination for his quietly devastating performance as a troubled father in A24's Aftersun. He also starred in the LGBTQ+ romance All of Us Strangers, earning a BAFTA nomination for his performance.
However, for his first major action blockbuster, Mescal carefully chose Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, playing the lead role of Lucius, the son of Russell Crowe's Maximus. Despite expanding to big-budget filmmaking, Mescal hasn't lost his identity as an actor and continues to opt mostly for smaller, independent projects that showcase his subtle sensibilities as an actor. Paul Mescal reflected on masculinity in film during the Cannes press conference for “The History of Sound,” saying that he thinks cinema is “moving away” from alpha male roles. Mescal stars in Oliver Hermanus’ gay romance alongside Josh O’Connor, with the two playing musicians who travel to New England together in the summer of 1919 to record the folk songs of their rural countrymen.
“It’s ever shifting,” he said. “I think maybe in cinema we’re moving away from the traditional, alpha, leading male characters. I don’t think the film is defining or attempting to redefine masculinity, I think it is being very subjective to the relationship between [their characters] Lionel and David.”
The actor also spoke out against comparisons of the film to “Brokeback Mountain,” calling them “lazy and frustrating.” Several reviews of “The History of Sound,” including Variety‘s, drew a connection between the two films.

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor offer more proof that they are among the best contemporary actors we have in The History of Sound, a resonant account of a tender but too-fleeting gay love affair interrupted by World War I. Adapted by Ben Shattuck from his jewel-like short story of the same name, the film’s romance and heartache are intensified by the intimate experience the two men share of traveling the backwoods of Maine in 1919, collecting traditional folk tunes and ballads from rural people, essentially the equivalent in music of an oral history.

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor made Cannes Film Festival sob on Wednesday night with Oliver Hermanus’ “The History of Sound,” which earned a six-minute standing ovation.
While Mescal received a standing ovation when walking in, O’Connor had to miss the premiere because he was finishing filming his part in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film and couldn’t make it.
Though O’Connor wasn’t present, Mescal carried the weight. One rowdy fan screamed, “We love you, Paul!” seconds before the film started, when the audience usually sits in reverent silence. By the end, moviegoers were weeping and swatting at each other trying to get video of Mescal, who was also tearing up.
“This has been one of the most wonderful creative collaborations of my very, very short career, but this has been a testament to the genius of Paul Mescal,” said director Hermanus.

After teasing subscribers with some first-look images, the streaming platform formerly known as Max decided to unveil the first trailer for its upcoming thriller series Task. The show stars Mark Ruffalo (All The Light We Cannot See) and Tom Pelphrey (Ozark) on opposite sides of the law. Ruffalo's Tom Brandis has to command a task force that needs to investigate and put an end to a series of home invasions led by Pelphrey's Robbie Prendergrast in Pennsylvania. HBO Max also revealed the release window for the series: We can expect to see it this September.
The trailer for Task suggests that it will be a high-stakes kind of thriller and reveals that we will follow the story from two distinct POVs. On one side, we will follow Tom and his team. He's not really happy with the people selected for the task, so chances are that they will have their differences.

Friendship, an upcoming A24 comedy starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, is now regarded as one of the best films of the year thus far. The film is getting a limited theatrical release, but it sounds like audiences should do whatever is necessary to catch Andrew DeYoung's feature-length directorial debut that has the I Think You Should Leave star taking his unique comedic sensibilities to the big screen.
As of this writing, Friendship has a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 61 reviews. If it stays around that number, it will be a Top 15-rated film on the review aggregate website for 2025. The critic consensus reads, "Tim Robinson expands his exquisitely painful cringe comedy style to feature length with seamless results in Friendship, a toxic bromance that'll make audiences laugh and wince in equal measure." The current spate of California blazes has made the memorable Star Trek Generations line of dialogue, “They say time is the fire in which we burn” truer than ever. The line, spoken by Malcolm McDowell’s villainous character Soran and inspired by the Delmore Schwartz poem “Calmly We Walk through This April’s Day,” hits home now as Star Trek actors, including Denise Crosby and Kate Mulgrew, share the real-life toll of the disasters on them and their loved ones.

Taye Diggs got his start in the professional performing arts world on stage, not on screen. He had a successful Broadway career with roles in Carousel and Rent before he appeared in his first TV roles in 1996. He has become such a prolific film and TV actor since then that many might forget that hes a song and dance man first.
Diggs first big screen break was with the romance How Stella Got Her Groove Back in 1998. Hes been nonstop as an actor and writer ever since. In fact, in addition to all his work on screen, Diggs has also written four childrens books and founded a dance company. With all of his creative talent, its no wonder that he has worked on so many great movies and TV shows.

We often talk about how hard it is to forge new friendships as we get older. Our routines lock us into specific spaces where meeting new people and trying new things is hard. With that being said, have you ever met someone who's a little too eager to be friends, or maybe even uncomfortably overzealous? You hit it off, hang out, and as you get to know them, alarm bells go off. Andrew DeYoungs new film Friendship takes this premise, turns it up to the highest degree, and utilizes cringe connoisseur Tim Robinson to take it as far as possible.
The film banks on several hilarious scenarios that play much like a full-length sketch from Robinson's acclaimed Netflix show, I Think You Should Leave, but there are also some intelligent epiphanies sprinkled throughout Friendship. In between, DeYoung lets his main character run amok and burn everything down.

In today's streaming era, where most shows last only three seasons with eight episodes each, it's easy to forget how inconsistent network television could be. Most of these shows, in what was known as the Golden Age of TV, lasted for at least five seasons, with twenty episodes each. While there were benefits to long-running television, many agree that these shows often got worse the longer they ran.
Many of these shows started off really well, with interesting and compelling pilot episodes that captured the viewers' interest. However, as these shows went on, the plot began to falter, and many of these shows ended up jumping the shark. With shows like Riverdale, they had such good pilots that the show would be almost unrecognizable by the series finale.

Longtime Ktla entertainment anchor Sam Rubin, who died earlier this year, received the 76th Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award on Saturday night, given posthumously to recognize his “legacy of more than three decades of entertainment news reporting for Ktla.”
Rubin also won an Emmy in the entertainment news category, for his “Ktla Morning News” coverage of the SAG-AFTRA strike last year.
Overall, pubcaster Kcet (which now calls itself “PBS SoCal Plus”) dominated with ten wins, including in categories such as culture/history (“Legacy 10 Days In Watts”), L.A. local color (“Angel City Press: L.A. Through the Pages — Artbound”), independent programming (“Everybody Dance”), crime/social issues (“Bonnie Boswell Presents: Saving Moms”) and more.

Public broadcaster Kcet is once again the leader in Los Angeles Area Emmys nominations, landing 22 this year (down slightly from last year’s 24), thanks to expecially to the locally produced series “Artbound” and its “10 Days in Watts.” Cable news outlet Spectrum News 1 was in second, with 17 — up from 14 last year.
Meanwhile, Kabc-tv — aka ABC7 — saw a nice surge to 14 noms, up from 7 last year and good enough to top the commercial broadcast outlets. Nominees included the late Sam Rubin, who was nominated in the entertainment news story for his coverage of the SAG-AFTRA strike on Ktla.
As usual, all stations that enter are immediately nominated in the daily morning newscast (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.), daily daytime newscast (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.), and daily evening newscast (7 p.m. to 12 a.m.) categories.
Last year, Telemundo outlet Kvea swept the newscast categories, winning the Emmys for evening (7 p.m.

Universal Pictures and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a trilogy of sequels to the 1973 classic The Exorcist, which we’re going to another collaboration between Blumhouse Productions and directed David Gordon Green (who recently delivered a trilogy of Halloween sequels), they were definitely expecting the first entry in the new trilogy to go over better with audiences than The Exorcist: Believer did when it was released last October. (You can read our 4/10 review Here.) The box office numbers were okay, the movie pulled in $137 million on a $30 million budget, but Universal was hoping for a lot better than “okay,” and the reactions were largely negative. Soon after the release of Believer, we heard that Universal and Blumhouse still intended to carry out the trilogy, but the follow-ups would be reworked. While speaking to The Direct this week, producer...

Friday the 13th and Spooky Season converge this month, so what better time to see an “Exorcist” sequel? “The Exorcist: Believer” is a follow-up to the iconic 1973 film, dubbed my many as the scariest movie ever made. This new movie promises frights and terror in equal measure, and if you’re not seeing Taylor Swift’s concert movie or are looking for something scary to watch, you may be wondering where, exactly, you can see “The Exorcist: Believer.”
Here’s everything you need to know.
Is “The Exorcist: Believer” in Theaters or Streaming?
The film opened exclusively in theaters on Oct. 6, so right now the only way to see it is to buy a movie ticket. However, you won’t have to wait long to catch the film at home. The film is currently available on PVOD and will be streaming on Peacock on Dec. 1.

The Exorcist: Believer (our review can be read at This Link), the latest entry in the Exorcist franchise, didn’t go over well with critics or the general audience… which pretty much makes it a typical Exorcist movie, because none of these movies – other than the original The Exorcist and Exorcist III – are very popular, even among the horror crowd. There’s a new Exorcist movie in theatres now, The Exorcist: Believer (read our review Here), and for the first time in the franchise Ellen Burstyn reprises the role of Chris MacNeil, the character she played in the 1973 classic The Exorcist. Her presence has been a major selling point in the marketing of this movie – but there’s another returning cast member who makes a brief appearance in the film. We heard months ago that Linda Blair (who was also in Exorcist II: The Heretic) would be showing up in The Exorcist: Believer, and during an interview with People magazine director David Gordon Green talked about reuniting Burstyn and Blair for “a beautiful moment”.
Green told People, “It was just a really special moment to be a part of that reunion, to be a part of that legacy, the connection that’s so monumental that the two of those performers have.

There’s a new Exorcist movie in theatres now. The Exorcist: Believer (read our review Here) is tracking to have the highest opening weekend of the entire franchise and might end up pulling in an amount somewhere in the range of 30 to 36 million. Its theatrical run got started last night, and according to The Hollywood Reporter it drew in $2.85 million from those Thursday preview screenings.
Most of the film’s reviews are negative – it currently has a 20% score on Rotten Tomatoes and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray described it as “abysmal” – so we’ll have to wait and see if that’s going to have any impact on the opening weekend box office.

So October has finally arrived and the studios are truly “bringing out the big guns” in order to “scare up” some box office bucks at the ole’ haunted multiplex. We’re talking the “classics” here. No, it’s not another Scream entry, since this one goes back a lot further in fear film history. Not as far as the “thirsty Count” since we’ve had two flicks about the true first “bat-man” in the past year. But it is older than the Halloween (the crew behind the last three are behind this one) series or the assorted other sinister stalkers. We can call this a fright franchise since there have been four (some say five) entries and even a short-lived TV series. And it all started exactly fifty years ago as a best-selling novel was adapted into what was then the most profitable horror movie ever (for at least a...

Everything that sprouts from the soil of The Exorcist pales in comparison, with only Jeremy Slater’s The Exorcist series (canceled far too soon after just two seasons) living up to the standards of William Peter Blatty’s book and William Friedkin’s film adaptation. With the bar set incredibly high, the odds were against The Exorcist: Believer from the start. And, unfortunately, not even the much-ballyhooed return of Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil can cast out the dreaded sequel demons.
The film kicks off with a flashback that only fills in minor story elements (since this is only part one of a planned trilogy). 13 years ago, married photographers Victor and Sorenne were visiting Haiti when a devastating earthquake struck the city. Victor escaped unharmed, but Sorenne was gravely injured. She survived just long enough to give birth to their daughter,...

Fifty years ago, writer William Peter Blatty and director William Friedkin changed the face of possession horror with the seminal feature The Exorcist, which inspired sequels and prequels that never quite reached the same box office highs of the original, along with a short-lived TV series. Director David Gordon Green and Blumhouse, fresh off the recent Halloween trilogy, reteam for a new chapter, The Exorcist: Believer, once again eschewing all canon beyond the original film. Introduced as the first in a new trilogy, Believer attempts to comment on religion in a modern world. However, its thinly sketched narrative and reliance on nostalgia works against it.

In the long history of horror films since the dawn of cinema, it would be hard to imagine any of them quite having the particular impact of 1973’s The Exorcist, which became the first horror film to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar along with nine other nominations including Best Actress for Ellen Burstyn. It eventually won two Academy Awards: for William Peter Blatty’s screenplay based on his 1971 novel, and for the bone-chilling sound work. When I saw it as a young kid in its original incarnation at the National Theatre in Westwood (now no longer existing), there were lines like you have never seen wrapping completely around the block. Warner Bros even put a nurse on duty in the lobby for those who passed out — no mere gimmick because it actually happened.

We’ve seen what director David Gordon Green and Blumhouse Productions could do with the Halloween franchise, three times over. Now we’re going to see what they can do with the Exorcist franchise when The Exorcist: Believer reaches theatres this Friday, October 6th. This movie is meant to be the start of a new trilogy of Exorcist sequels, and Universal Pictures and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute this trilogy… so they’re probably very glad to hear that the film is tracking to have a franchise record-breaking opening weekend.

The Exorcist: Believer is set to be released on October 6th, and the latest piece of promotion is a featurette that discusses spirituality and the father and daughter characters that are at the center of the film’s story.
