‘ER’ alum Eriq La Salle looks back on the Benton-Carter rehab moment 25 years later: ‘If you have to go to hell, I’m coming to hell with you’
Image
One of ER fans' favorite sequences is also Eriq La Salle's.

May 18 marks the 25th anniversary of the Season 6 finale of the NBC hit, "May Day," the ending of which is a top-tier moment in the Benton (La Salle)-Carter (Noah Wyle) bromance. "It was definitely one of my favorite episodes," La Salle tells Gold Derby.

Towards the end of the hour, Dr. Benton, Dr. Greene (Anthony Edwards), Dr. Weaver (Laura Innes), Dr. Chen (Ming-Na Wen), and Dr. Anspaugh (John Aylward) stage an intervention for Dr. Carter, who had developed a pain medication addiction after surviving the brutal attack earlier in the season by schizophrenic patient Paul Sobriki (David Krumholtz) that killed Lucy (Kellie Martin).

Not a man of many words anyway, Benton does not say anything during the intervention, from which a defiant Carter storms out and quits. Benton follows his mentee and former med student outside,...

Image

At a time when so many shows are canceled after just one or two seasons, it's important to remember how a lot of great shows took a while to find their identity. The horror genre has plenty of examples of it, from hits like Supernatural to underrated gems.

Box Office: ‘Equalizer 3’ Opens to $3.8 Million in Previews
Image
Denzel Washington is back as professional killer Robert McCall in “The Equalizer 3,” which has made $3.8 million in previews at the box office.

The R-rated, action thriller is expected to make between $28 million and $30 million in its opening weekend. With the Labor Day holiday on Monday, it could grow from $33 million to $40 million in the four-day frame. That will be enough to claim the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend, beating Sony’s “Gran Turismo,” which topped the charts last week.

“The Equalizer 3” will have the smallest three-day opening of the franchise, following the $34 million debut for the original “Equalizer” in 2014 and its 2018 sequel’s $36 million launch. Both of those movies grossed over $100 million at the domestic box office and nearly $200 million globally.

Antoine Fuqua, who directed the first two movies and “Training Day” with Washington, returned to helm the third and final “Equalizer” installment. This time,...

Van Helsing Returns For A Final Season And Adds Time Travel To Its Narrative Palette
Image
This Van Helsing article contains major spoilers for the season 5 premiere.

From the dynamically retooled opening title sequence to the Jack-centric Transylvania storyline, it takes only moments to recognize that Van Helsing’s fifth and final season promises to take fans on a wild ride as it brings to a close its delightfully circuitous tale of horror’s most iconic vampire hunting family. Season premiere “Past Tense” doesn’t represent the first time the Van Helsing family story finds itself in the past, but there seems to be a more concerted effort this time to employ traditional time travel elements as the unanswered questions mount.

It’s been sixteen months since the season four finale, but the head of the Van Helsing clan remains noticeably absent from the story even though her imprint is unmistakable. Fans of the series understand Kelly Overton’s (Vanessa Van Helsing) pregnancy last season limited her participation,...

Van Helsing Season 5: Everything You Need to Know
Image
Because Van Helsing season 5 is the show’s final run, expectations are high that the vampire apocalypse series will be able to end on its own terms and provide closure to fans. Showrunner Jonathan Lloyd Walker, who took over from Neil Labute in season 4, recently confirmed on Twitter that production has wrapped, so fans won’t have long to wait to see a conclusion to the story of Vanessa Van Helsing, the descendant of the famed vampire hunter who has the power to reverse the conversion of humans into bloodsucking fiends.

Entering our last week on #VanHelsing I must say thank-you to a group seldom thought about at season/series wrap. Family. Partners, kids, friends… all endure a lot of stress, separation and extra work supporting cast/crew through long hours & days. You make the dream possible.

Van Helsing Season 5 Overcomes Production Challenges
Image
After witnessing the series’ titular hero and devoted followers battle the vagaries of a global vampire pandemic for four years, Van Helsing prepares to return for its fifth and final season with a virtual appearance on a Comic-Con@Home Panel Discussion. Though short on specific plot details about the upcoming season, the cast and crew, nonetheless, give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the daunting challenges the show faces as the first television series to resume production in North America.

Of course, fans of the Syfy post-apocalyptic horror tale are most concerned with when Van Helsing will return to the air and whether the oft absent Vanessa (Kelly Overton) will resume her role as the chief vampire slayer after disappearing into a mysterious vortex in last season’s seventh episode. Executive Producer Chad Oakes revealed that though the network likely won’t make an announcement until September, its intention remains for...

‘Van Helsing’ Adds Kim Coates & Others As Production Resumes On Syfy Series’ Final Season
Image
Syfy said today that production has resumed on the fifth and final season of Van Helsing, its action-horror series from Nomadic Pictures and Dynamic Television. Sons of Anarchy alum Kim Coates has joined the cast along with Ali Liebert and Steve Bacic.

Coates — who co-starred as “Tig” Trager on Soa — will play Count Dalibor, the husband of Olivia who, despite his best intentions, makes some disastrous choices. Liebert will play Nina, a vampire with a colorful past that involves Julius (Aleks Paunovic) and a hidden agenda that entails a lot of death. Bacic will portray the father, a wild vampire who dresses in animal skins and has been hiding in an abandoned mine with a child.

Kelly Overton, Jonathan Scarfe, Tricia Helfer, Keeya King, Paunovic and Nicole Munoz star in Van Helsing, which its producers say is the first drama series to restart filming in Canada — namely Kamloops and Vancouver.

Van Helsing Season 5 Confirmed by Syfy, Set as Final Season
Joseph Baxter Dec 17, 2019

Syfy’s Van Helsing has been renewed for a fifth and final season, set to properly close out the vampire-slaying series.

Van Helsing has spared its fans from speculating if the December 20 Season 4 finale will stand as the series finale, thanks to Syfy’s announcement of a fifth season, which will serve as the show’s final frame.

Syfy has given a 13-episode order for Van Helsing Season 5, which will premiere sometime in 2020, as revealed by THR. Production is expected to start early into the new year. With the finish line now clearly on the horizon, the series will be able to properly conclude its story, which has greatly evolved its mythology from an initial concept centered on Vanessa Van Helsing (Kelly Overton), who, bearing an innate ability to combat (and even cure) vampires, was brought back to life to serve as humanity’s last hope in a post-apocalyptic near-future.

Aleks Paunovic, Kelly Overton, Jonathan Scarfe, Nicole Muñoz, and Keeya King in Van Helsing (2016)
“Van Helsing” fans will get to sink their teeth into the fantasy drama one last time.

Syfy has announced it is renewing the vampire show for a fifth and final outing. The news comes only a few days ahead of the season 4 finale, which airs on Dec. 20.

“Van Helsing” is set in a world dominated and controlled by vampires. Season 4 continues the story of Vanessa Van Helsing and her band of heroes as they fight to reclaim the world after vampires took over during “The Rising.”

The most recent season of the show is averaging just under 300,000 total viewers through 12 episodes in the Live+Same Day ratings, down from the 380,000 average viewers who tuned in to season 3. Those numbers place it as the second least watched series on the network, only in front of “Happy!” which was canceled after a single season back in June.

Van Helsing Season 3 Episode 11 Review: Been Away
Axel returns home for a bittersweet reunion, and Sam searches for Mohamad on a thought provoking Van Helsing.

TV

This Van Helsing review contains spoilers.

Van Helsing Season 3 Episode 11

“In the end, no one’s ever really who you think they are.”

Now that Vanessa has come to terms with her past actions, it’s only fitting that Axel Miller be afforded the opportunity to confront some of his own demons in a continuation of the cast-lite approach Van Helsing has adopted of late. The deeply personal “Been Away” puts Jonathan Scarfe in the spotlight as Axel wrestles not only with the conflicting forces of love and hate, but the knowledge that at his core he’s as imperfect as the next man.

There’s only so much a show can do when it focuses solely on one of its regular characters operating in a limited and compact framework, and...

‘The Equalizer 2′ Blu-ray Review
Stars: Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Ashton Sanders, Melissa Leo, Orson Bean, Bill Pullman, Jonathan Scarfe, Kazy Tauginas, Garrett Golden, Sakina Jaffrey, Tamara Hickey, Karen Strong | Written by Richard Wenk | Directed by Antoine Fuqua

Denzel Washington returns as ultra-violent vigilante Robert McCall in this slick sequel that marks the actor’s fourth collaboration with director Antoine Fuqua. Handsomely made and superbly acted, the film is a stronger outing than its predecessor, smoothing over several of its rough edges.

After a fun prologue on a train to Turkey that has an in-disguise McCall violently rescuing a young girl, the plot switches to Brussels, where a suspicious double murder draws the attention of his former CIA boss Susan (Melissa Leo) and his old colleague Dave (Pedro Pascal). When Susan winds up dead, McCall finds himself targeted by a squad of gun-toting goons and sets out on a trail of bloody revenge.

At the same time,...

Van Helsing Season 3 Episode 8 Review: Crooked Steps
Vanessa and Scarlett track down the third Elder, but it's his true identity that highlights this week's Van Helsing.

TV

This Van Helsing review contains spoilers.

Van Helsing Season 3 Episode 8

“Just once, can we have something in plain English.”

Coming on the heels of its most violent episode to date, Van Helsing slows the pace allowing Vanessa and Scarlett time to get a better handle on how they’ll manage to take down the Dark One and save the human race from the “tyranny of the vampire.” Showrunner/writer Neil Labute’s dialogue rich “Crooked Steps” answers some lingering questions, gives the sisters a chance to strategize, and inserts more of the compelling Van Helsing family history into the mix. Having settled into a comfortable rhythm that allows viewers to alternately experience the terrifying struggle humans face amidst the vampire apocalypse and the analytic approach necessary to bring an end to the chaos,...

Van Helsing Season 3 Episode 1 Review: Fresh Tendrils
Scarlett and Vanessa accept help from an Elder as they set out to bring down The Dark One on the return of Van Helsing.

TV

This Van Helsing review contains spoilers.

Van Helsing Season 3 Episode 1

“You want a monster? I’ll give you a monster.”

Van Helsing returns and “Fresh Tendrils” seamlessly picks up where the season two finale leaves off. Vanessa wakes to find herself face to face with the Elder sent by Scarlett, and a new breed of vampire roams the countryside. There’s a lot going on here, but Neil Labute deftly handles all the moving plot parts making it easy for viewers to comfortably slide back into the third installment of this rapidly changing world.

Whether it’s a flashback or a childhood memory, the peek into 1986 provides another view of Vanessa’s early life and the abandonment issues that fuel her present desire to operate...
