All 5 Star Trek Animated Shows, Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
As of this writing, there have been five animated series in the annals of "Star Trek." The first was also called "Star Trek" (although is now better known as "Star Trek: The Animated Series"), and it reassembled most of the 1966 show's original cast (Walter Koenig was left out), continuing where the original series left off. It ran for two seasons in 1973 and 1974. Some Trekkies consider "Animated Series" to be only partially canonical, as later films and shows contradicted what it put forth. It was, however, the first time Trekkies learned that the "T" in "James T. Kirk" stood for "Tiberius."

The second animated "Star Trek" series didn't launch until 2020, after the franchise had moved to Paramount+. "Star Trek: Lower Decks" was a 30-minute animated sitcom version of "Star Trek," set shortly after the events of "Star Trek: Voyager." That show lasted a successful five seasons before coming to a close...

The Brady Bunch Had A Lot Of Spin-Offs You Didn't Realize Existed
Image
Sherwood Schwartz's 1969 sitcom "The Brady Bunch" was progressive and retrogressive at the same time. On the one hand, it vaunted the virtues of remarrying and finding new families, showing that step-siblings and second spouses could produce as harmonious a domestic unit as more traditional nuclear families. On the other hand, the characters were clean-cut and virtuous to a cartoonish degree, only expressing the blandest sorts of domestic turmoil. It's easy to be harmonious when every member of the family is scrupulous and clean. The show was more about mild, silly pet peeves than about legitimately hard-hitting clashes of character.

Of course, "hard-hitting" was not Schwartz's métier. He was a writer of high-concept, light-hearted comedies. This was, after all, the "Gilligan's Island" guy. He wasn't about to skew into Neil Labute family dramas with "The Brady Bunch."

And "The Brady Bunch" was huge. It lasted a gangbusters 117 episodes over its five seasons,...

A Forgotten Star Trek Spin-Off Is Still Worth Revisiting 5 Decades Later
Image
Sometimes, even the most hardcore fanboys need to be reminded that certain facets of their own beloved sci-fi franchise actually exist. "Star Wars" fans, for instance, often need to be reminded that there are 16 movies in the series, and not just the nine that have Roman numerals in them.

(To quickly provide a list, the 16 movies include "Star Wars," "The Star Wars Holiday Special," "The Empire Strikes Back," "Return of the Jedi," "Caravan of Courage," "The Battle for Endor," "The Great Heep," "The Phantom Menace," "Attack of the Clones," "Revenge of the Sith," "The Clone Wars," "The Force Awakens," "Rogue One," "The Last Jedi," "Solo," and "The Rise of Skywalker." 16. I will hear no further arguments.)

Likewise, many Trekkies have to be reminded about the sheer volume of TV shows that the franchise has produced since its inception in 1966. As of this writing, there have been 13 "Star Trek" TV shows,...

Five of the Most Expensive TV Shows of the 20th Century
Image
In the age of the Cinematic Universe and streaming platforms with unlimited venture capital money to throw around, it’s par for the course for a TV show to cost dozens of millions of dollars per episode. But television used to be a much humbler pursuit — one Stranger Thing could buy you multiple seasons of Cheers.

Here’s a little taste of what was considered a gigantic budget, pre-Y2K…

5 Thundercats (1985)

1985’s Thundercats didn’t invent the kids’-show-as-commercial approach to television programming, but it did cynically exploit it. He-Man and Transformers had already made millions for their studios and toy companies, and the producers of Thundercats decided to go all-in: They got stations to agree to air it in key timeslots in exchange for a cut of the toy sales.

That’s how they were able to justify a whopping (at the time) $15 million budget for the first season.

John Erwin Dead Aged 88; Mourned by She-Ra and Skeletor Actors
Image
As the world prepares to see a new He-Man hit the big screen next year, it has been sadly reported that the voice behind the original animated version of the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe character, John Erwin, has died aged 88. The actor, who began his career working in adverts in the late 1960s, made a number of other appearances, but for many, it was his role as He-Man that he will be most remembered for. As well as leading the show in the role of He-Man, Erwin also played the monstrously dim-witted Beast Man.

According to PR firm Celebworx, who represented the star, Erwin actually died last month, “around December 20,” of natural causes. The announcement not only drew reactions from many children of the ‘80s, but also Erwin’s costars, Alan Oppenheimer, who voiced Skeletor, and Melendy Britt, who provided the voice of She-Ra. In a...

Clayface Movie Moving Forward At DC Studios With Doctor Sleep's Mike Flanagan Penning The Script
Image
Variety is reporting that a Clayface movie is officially moving forward at DC Studios, with Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep; The Fall of the House of Usher; Midnight Mass) attached to write the screenplay.

Flanagan and Trevor Macy, his partner at Intrepid Pictures, pitched the potential film to James Gunn and Peter Safran over a year ago, and it looks like the idea won over the new DC bosses as they've issued a formal greenlight.

Plot details remain under wraps, but what we do know is that Clayface won't be a villain in the feature, which makes sense considering that back in 2021, Flanagan, when asked which DC movie he'd like to make, said, "Well I've wanted to do a Superman movie since I was a kid, but I would also be really keen to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy."

Filming is tentatively scheduled to begin early next year,...

Sherwood Schwartz Almost Added A Dinosaur To Gilligan's Island
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The seven lead characters in Sherwood Schwartz's 1960s sitcom "Gilligan's Island" have become an indelible part of the world's pop consciousness, emerging as a new canon of distinctly American Commedia del'arte archetypes. The Professor (Russell Johnson) is the updated version of Il Dottore. Mr. Howell (Jim Backus) is the new Pantolone. The Skipper (Alan Hale) is clearly a modern Scaramuccia, and Gilligan (Bob Denver), well, he's Arlecchino. Additionally, Mary Ann (Dawn Wells) is likely Colombiana, Ginger (Tina Louise) is Gianduja, and Mrs. Howell (Natalie Schafer) is ... I guess another Pantolone.

It's hard to imagine a world where the seven stock "Gilligan's Island" characters were dramatically altered, as the seven characters audiences saw were downright perfect. One could always predict how one character might interact with any of the others.

Of course, it took a little trial and error to get the characters right.

5 Different Actresses Replaced Tina Louise As Ginger After Gilligan's Island
Image
After Sherwood Schwartz's hit sitcom "Gilligan's Island" wrapped in 1967, actress Tina Louise, who played the glamorous movie star Ginger Grant, was finished. While most of Louise's co-stars would return for "Gilligan's Island" TV movies and spinoffs, she would stay away from the franchise, pursuing other film and TV projects as her whims dictated. Louise's refusal to make more "Gilligan's Island" after 1967 led to persistent rumors that she hated the show and didn't enjoy her time on it. While Louise might have been a little cold to her co-stars, she has revealed that she never resented them for any reason, and actually very much enjoyed her time on "Gilligan's Island."

After "Gilligan's Island," Louise starred in several high-profile films, including the Matt Helm spy spoof "The Wrecking Crew," the sci-fi horror film "The Stepford Wives," and the made-for-tv sequel "Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby." Her most recent performance came...

Gilligan's Island Had Two Animated Spin-Offs You Probably Forgot About
Image
Back when Saturday morning cartoons were actually a thing, animated spinoffs were network executives' golden ticket for extending the lifespan of their biggest hits. 1960s sensations "Star Trek" and "Gilligan's Island" both enjoyed new leases on life when they were revived via cartoon series years after going off the air, bringing back most of the original casts in their beloved roles. In the case of Sherwood Schwartz's silly slapstick sitcom about a group of people stranded on a remote island somewhere in the Pacific, it actually got a second animated spinoff, if you can believe it.

If you're wondering how the hell Schwartz wrung enough juice for two whole other shows out of the "Gilligan's Island" formula, the answer is he didn't — not exactly. Where the showrunner's Western knockoff "Dusty's Trail" swapped out Bob Denver's sailor gear for a cowboy getup, stuck the passengers of the SS Minnow on a wagon train,...

Mash's Animated TV Parody Series Explained (& Why It Failed)
Image
Mash was an incredibly popular sitcom and its finale remains the most-watched of all time, making it unlikely that its record will be broken. Mush, an animated parody of Mash featuring canine versions of the characters, was produced by Filmation but received poorly and eventually got cancelled. The failure of Mush led to the cancellation of the entire Uncle Croc's Block show and marked Filmation's first-ever cancellation from a network, ending their relationship with ABC.

Mash's popularity led to a very strange parody, Mush, which ultimately failed. Regarded as one of the best sitcoms of all time, it shouldn't be surprising that Mash was also immensely popular during its time on the air. Mash's finale remains both the most-watched finale of any show and the most-watched episode of a scripted series. Considering the many viewing avenues now, it's unlikely that its record will be broken. Before it even reached that,...

Star Trek: The Animated Series Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Tribute Comic
Image
Star Trek: The Animated Series was crucial in bringing the franchise back after its original cancellation, keeping the adventures of Starfleet alive during its "wilderness years." The status of The Animated Series in canon remains debated, but its contributions to the franchise continue to be recognized and integrated into continuity. Idw's new tribute comic, Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents the Scheimer Barrier, is part of the franchise's 50th-anniversary celebrations and aims to introduce The Animated Series to a new generation of Star Trek fans.

Star Trek celebrates the 50th anniversary of Star Trek: The Animated Series in 2023, and in September Idw Publishing is honoring the milestone with a special, digital-release comic, Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents the Scheimer Barrier. Having kept the spirit of Trek alive in the interim between the original show's cancellation in 1969 and its theatrical reprise a decade later, The Animated Series was essential to the franchise's history.

Star Trek: The Animated Series Is Celebrating Its 50th Anniversary With New Shorts And Comics
Image
"Star Trek: The Animated Series," originally just called "Star Trek," debuted on September 8, 1973. It will soon be commemorating its 50th anniversary. To celebrate, as announced at this year's San Diego Comic Con, Paramount will be newly animating several "Star Trek" characters and tapping extant "Star Trek" actors to produce several promotional bumpers in the old "Tas" style. Jonathan Frakes will play Commander William Riker in one such bumper, Armin Shimerman will return to play Quark in another, while Doug Jones will appear as Saru from "Star Trek: Discovery."

The announcement was given by "Star Trek" creative consultant Casper Kelly, who previously worked on "Star Trek: Short Treks."

"Star Trek: The Animated Series" famously reunited most of the original series cast (Walter Koenig does not appear) and merrily continued the five-year mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise. James Doohan reprised his role as Scotty, but also took on a lot of the show's supporting characters,...

Flimation Created the First DC 'Cinematic Universe' on TV
Image
Filmation, a low-budget animation studio, created the first-ever DC Universe with shared continuity outside the comic books themselves. The series finale of The Flash on The CW ended one DC "cinematic" universe, and The Flash movie is the beginning of the end of another. However, DC characters have been sharing a universe in animation for decades.

Of all the recent entries in the live-action DC Comics multiverse, its most prolific, consistent and under-appreciated is the Arrowverse. There's just something about the serial nature of television that lends itself to that kind of storytelling. Perhaps the perfect version of shared superhero continuity is the DC Animated Universe from the 1990s and early 2000s. Its depictions of Batman, Superman, Lex Luthor and other characters are the definitive ones for a generation that grew up with plenty of those characters in live-action. However, before movie audiences believed a man could fly, Filmation producers...

Beyond He-Man and She-Ra: celebrating the Filmation legacy
Andrew Younger Sep 2, 2016

Tarzan, Space Sentinels, The New Adventures Of Batman, Flash Gordon, Bravestarr and more, as we salute Filmation...

For a child of the 1970s and 80s, nothing readied you for a half hour of quality entertainment quite like the Filmation logo. Immortalised by their phenomenal success with He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe, and its spin off She-Ra: Princess Of Power, Filmation produced some of the most fondly remembered animated series to grace the small screen.

Over a period of 26 years - in tandem with classic Doctor Who funnily enough - the company's writers, artists and producers delivered a staggering amount of programming. While naysayers point to Filmation's penchant for reusing a stockpile of rotoscoped body movements, or the heavy handedness of its moralising and educational content - children on the other hand, thrilled to an irresistible mixture of action, adventure and superhuman heroes.

2013 celebrity deaths: Paul Walker, Cory Monteith, James Gandolfini
The year now ending marks another 12-month period of losing talents who have given television viewers entertainment or information ... and some of those passings, even more sadly, came as major and untimely shocks. Zap2it remembers:

Paul Walker: The actor best-known for the "Fast & Furious" movies had career roots in such TV shows as "Who's the Boss?" "Highway to Heaven" and "Touched by an Angel."

James Gandolfini: He projected so much older as mobster Tony Soprano, many were surprised to learn the three-time Emmy winner only was in his 30s and 40s when he played the part.

Cory Monteith: As Finn Hudson on "Glee," the Canadian-born performer touched fans of all ages both in life and afterward.

Jean Stapleton: Forever TV's top "dingbat," the "All in the Family" actress earned three Emmys as lovably daffy Edith Bunker.

Jonathan Winters: The improvisation genius who inspired his...

R.I.P. Lou Scheimer, producer of Filmation cartoons like He-Man and Fat Albert
Producer Lou Scheimer—a founder of the Filmation studios responsible for cartoons like Fat Albert and He-Man—has died at the age 84. Along with Disney veteran Hal Sutherland and the late Norm Prescott, Scheimer founded Filmation Associates, a production company geared to turning out animated and live-action children’s TV shows for Saturday mornings. Filmation’s cartoons, in particular, had a distinctive, readily identifiable look that was largely the result of such cost-cutting measures as rotoscoping and heavy reliance on the repeated use of stock footage. Filmation sought to compensate for the deficiencies of its animation with tie-ins to ...
