'You're Not Being Seen': Voice of Goku Shares Biggest Obstacle Working on Dragon Ball
Image
A major part of Dragon Ball Daima’s draw for modern audiences was the sense of nostalgia it gave fans of the Og series. Key to capturing that feeling for English-speaking fans was the return of beloved original Kid Goku voice actor Stephanie Nadolny. While Nadolny’s star power speaks for itself nowadays, that wasn’t always the case -- especially given the behind-the-scenes nature of voice acting as a profession.

In a new interview with Cbr at San Diego Comic-Con, Stephanie Nadolny revealed how difficult it was for her to adjust to acting off-screen. Nadolny was the voice actor of young Goku in the original Dragon Ball series, and also the voice of Gohan in Dbz. She later continued her role as Kid Goku in Dragon Ball Gt and has since taken on roles as Kid Goku and Gohan in numerous Dragon Ball video games and other media. However,...

“I just can’t stay quiet”: ‘Dragon Ball’ Voice Actor Reveals Why 88-Years of Age Doesn’t Stop Her From Voicing Goku
Image
People resign themselves to a slow life after they hit the retirement age, believing there isn’t much they can do anyway. Well, at 88 years old, Masako Nozawa, the legendary voice behind Dragon Ball’s Goku, is still going strong.

In a franchise that is extremely demanding when it comes to vocal range, Nozawa is still powering through the iconic lines and battle cries with ease. The battles in Dragon Ball involve a lot of shouting and screaming, especially in scenes with attacks like Kamehameha (which takes a surprisingly long time to say).

However, in a recent event celebrating Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Nozawa thrilled audiences by performing Goku’s famous “Kamehameha!” attack live on stage. Just how is Nozawa so energetic? How has she continued to maintain the same skill level in voice acting?

Dragon Ball’s Official Voice of Goku Reveals Secret Behind Kamehameha
Image
Masako Nozawa, the official Japanese voice actor of Goku, is staying true to her vow of voicing the Dragon Ball character until she's in her late 180s. The iconic voice actor stunned audiences at a recent theatrical showing of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero with her powerful vocal performance of Goku’s signature attack, the Kamehameha Wave, in person.

According to Japan Anime News, Marunouchi Toei, the last movie theater directly operated by Toei and Japan’s final roadside-style cinema, is set to shut down in late July after 65 years, due to the building's redevelopment. To honor the theater's legacy, over 100 classic films will be screened from May 9, 2025, to July 27, 2025. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the 21st animated movie in the Dragon Ball franchise, will air from July 18-24, during the 11th week of screenings. Nozawa, who attended an early re-screening of the Super Hero movie on July 9 at the legendary Toei theater,...

It's The End of an Era For Dragon Ball Super & Akira Toriyama's Legacy
Image
Dragon Ball will never be the same again. The latest release of Dragon Ball Super marks the end of Akira Toriyama's contribution to the series as creator, leaving the future of the franchise to Toyotarou, the artist and co-creator of the manga.

Dragon Ball Super Full Color, Volume 24 was released in Japan on July 4, 2025. The latest digital colored collection includes Chapters 101-104 of the manga, which concludes the adaptation of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero anime movie and features the recent one-shot story starring Goten and Trunks. The complete colorization of the Dragon Ball Super manga also, unfortunately, means that Toriyama's contribution to Super and the Dragon Ball franchise is now officially over. Toyotarou -- who assured fans that a new Dragon Ball Super arc is coming -- will now have complete creative control of the manga when it resumes publication.

The Dragon Ball series has been on hiatus for a while now. The anime hasn’t progressed after the Tournament of Power, while the manga has been halted since Toriyama’s passing. Things might seem grim right now, but as long as the fans wait it out, the future is bright.

Dragon Ball Va Jason Douglas on Playing Beerus: “I didn’t know how big it would be for me”
Image
Dragon Ball is a phenomenon! From Goku and his Kamehameha blasts to Beerus and his cat naps, the franchise is an absolute force. The show has been a vibe since the beginning, but with the release of Battle of Gods in 2013, things changed with Beerus, the God of Destruction, entering the Dragon Ball world.

Voiced by Jason Douglas, this chill yet terrifying character steals the show with his swagger in every scene. Beerus is a character that’s just on a whole different level, and the voice actor?

The role totally flipped Douglas’s world as he had no idea of how huge this could become for him. He had been voice acting in anime for years, thinking he had witnessed everything, but Dragon Ball had the type of fans’ energy that hit like a Spirit Bomb!

Sean Schemmel's Legendary SSJ4 Scream Returns In Dragon Ball Daima's English-Dub Finale

"And this...is to go... even further beyond!"

The groundbreaking Super Saiyan 3 transformation of Goku was first unveiled to Japanese viewers in Dragon Ball Z episode 245, "Super Saiyan 3?!," which aired on November 9, 1994.

North American audiences experienced this iconic moment on September 26, 2002. It was in this episode's English dub that Sean Schemmel delivered a performance that, for many, established him as the quintessential voice of Goku.

Now, Schemmel is delivering yet another noteworthy performance as Goku transforms into SSJ4 in the Dragon Ball Daima final battle against Supreme Demon King Gomah, the successor of Dabura from Dbz's Buu saga.

‘Dragon Ball Daima’ Tested Goku Va’s Limit After He Passed Out 3 Times During the Finale
Image
Dragon Ball is a legacy series that has seen multiple generations of fans. The thought and genius that goes into making the manga by Toriyama, and now Toyotarou, is immense. But on the other hand, there is a lot to be done when adapting the series into anime as well.

Each element of the anime has to be perfect, be it the animation, sound effects, or the voice acting. Especially, the voice acting is the point that brings out the life in the characters.

Dragon Ball Daima, the latest installment of the Dragon Ball franchise, was the last work of Toriyama. The all-out battles in Daima meant a lot of intense shouting from the Va (Voice actor), Sean Schemmel, the voice of Goku, had his limits tested and fainted multiple times during the recording sessions.

Dragon Ball Z: Christopher Sabat Is Not Getting Enough Credit for Vegeta’s Super Sayian 3 Amid Goku’s SSJ4 Hype
Image
Okay, so let’s discuss something that’s been totally driving Dragon Ball Z fans crazy. Everyone and their Saiyan grandma is losing their minds over Super Saiyan 4 Goku again, and honestly, we get it, SSJ4 is super awesome, and Sean Schemmel’s voice acting always hits the spot. But can we just take a second to recognize something else that was released around the same time and was just as awesome?

We are talking about Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta. And for real: Christopher Sabat completely went god mode on the mic during the English dub during that scene. You could totally feel the spit flying out of Sabat’s mouth as he screamed ‘Final Flash’ like like his life depended on it. But while everybody’s too occupied simping over Goku’s Gt glow-up and flexing SSJ4 edits on their timelines, Sabat’s beast playing SSJ3 Vegeta is being left behind.

Dragon Ball Daima English Dub References Iconic Super Saiyan Goku Quote
Image
Dragon Ball Daima's English dub has finally reached its dramatic conclusion, and it’s celebrating the finale with a fun callback to a monumental moment in the franchise’s history.

In Dragon Ball Daima Episode 19, "Betrayal," Goku powers through his Super Saiyan transformations in a dramatic reference to his original Super Saiyan 3 power-up in Dbz. In the Dbz anime, Goku first ascends to SSJ3 in Episode 245, "Super Saiyan 3?!" He showcases each of his Super Saiyan forms, from SSJ1, to SSJ2, and finally SSJ3, and his doing the same in Dragon Ball Daima’s penultimate episode is already an amazing homage to an iconic Dbz moment. However, the English dub takes the reference even further than Daima’s original Japanese version did.

“I never had the final say”: Vegeta’s Va Christopher Sabat Clears Confusion on His Role in Dragon Ball Franchise
Image
He’s the legend, the icon, and the moment. Indeed, we’re talking about Vegeta, the Saiyan prince who remains a fan favorite. His journey from a vengeful character to a compassionate father and husband is remarkable. We cannot thank Toriyama sensei enough for painting him as a layered character.

However, voice acting notches it up and deserves praise, and this applies to Christopher Sabat, who brought the character to life with his gruff and raspy tone. He has been doing so for decades, which makes it noteworthy in every sense. But there’s a catch to that as well.

Sabat voiced the Saiyan Prince for three decades, but fans are often confused about his main role in the franchise. This has been a pressing question within the fandom, and the Va cleared the air. This also sheds light on his journey as a voice actor, which is reflected in his expertise,...

Sean Schemmel Didn’t Want to Voice Goku but This Dragon Ball Character When Christopher Sabat Called Him After Audition
Image
Dragon Ball is one of the top-tier shonen franchises, holding on strong after decades. The hard work, resilience, and persistence are something that the series lives by. It also taught the generations the importance of self-belief and strength.

What truly enhances the message in the anime is the voice acting. Yes, the characters fuel any story or narrative, but actors catalyze it. They mould them well, and Sean Schemmel is no exception. However, the Goku voice actor had different plans altogether.

In other words, Schemmel had another character in mind after his audition. That is, before Christopher Sabat called him, but there’s something quite interesting about it. Amid the bickering and banter, both voice artists have one thing in common, which we see throughout the series.

Sean Schemmel eyed another Dragon Ball character

Dragon Ball isn’t a cliche, run-of-the-mill Shonen series, but a cult phenomenon in many ways.

2 Ways Goku Would Beat Superman: Dragon Ball Z Voice Actor
Image
It is curious to draw matchups with characters from totally different franchises. For instance, Goku from Dragon Ball and Superman from DC Comics are both seen as extraordinarily powerful in their own right. So, it makes one wonder, who would win if they fought? Goku is a Saiyan who has achieved the highest potential in his race, and Superman is a Kryptonian who has reached the epitome of his kind.

Both of the characters are at the level of the divine, far beyond mortals. But Dragon Ball’s franchise seems more power-scaled and has a larger display of powers. Although Superman is indestructible and can continuously grow stronger, could he end up matching Son Goku at his peak?

Goku would ask for a sun‑powered showdown

Piccolo Va: “It almost might be a joke for Akira Toriyama” To Do What He Does to Vegeta in Every Dragon Ball Arc
Image
Over the years, Dragon Ball has evolved a lot. With each subsequent installment, it went from a simple martial arts story into a layered epic with gods and angels, alternate universes, and endless transformations and power-ups. But if there’s one thing that hasn’t changed, it’s the way Vegeta gets treated by the narrative itself. The once arrogant Prince of all Saiyans is made the butt of many jokes and has to be second-best all the time.

Piccolo’s voice actor, Christopher Sabat, recently shared his thoughts on this, and it might be what the Vegeta fans have been wondering all along. Did Toriyama intentionally nerf and turn Vegeta into a character that seems to get no wins?

Dragon Ball Theory Reveals a Female Saiyan in Universe 7 Even Stronger Than Goku and Vegeta
Image
The Dragon Ball universe may have been built around Goku and Vegeta for the longest time, but a new theory suggests the future of Saiyan power lies with Pan. We have seen the gradual evolution of this seemingly limitless race called the Saiyans. The Super Saiyan mode was supposedly the peak of their powers, but the Dragon Ball universe has even seen the use of Super Saiyan 4 in Daima (it is canon).

So, where do the limits of the Saiyan race lie? Goku and Vegeta are pure-blooded Saiyans and have both mastered Ultra forms. Gohan has Ultimate and Beast modes, making him far more unique with seemingly no loss in potential despite his half-human side. What about Pan, who is just a quarter Saiyan?

Goten has adapted to the Saiyan powers quickly, and the third generation of the Kakarot Saiyan family is Pan. As Gohan’s daughter and Goku’s granddaughter,...

Akira Toriyama Did Not Really Ruin Goku’s Training Partner Krillin With Depressing Defeats and Here’s the Proof
Image
There is a closed set of characters in Dragon Ball that have been carried over to the next installments and still continue to be relevant to the story. There is no denying that Krillin, Goku’s best friend, fellow disciple, and martial arts master, is one of them.

From Dragon Ball itself, the series has showcased Krillin’s willingness to train himself and become stronger, even shaving his head to prove his dedication. But he gets a bad reputation for being treated like cannon fodder and losing to every opponent he faces.

This is not entirely true. Although Krillin did not scale in power the way Goku and Vegeta did, his strength is nothing to scoff at. Akira Toriyama wanted to portray a human with Ki mastery and a lot of courage—and he did.

Krillin’s early journey was packed with victories

35 Years Later, It Still Bothers Me How Akira Toriyama Broke Dragon Ball’s Power Scaling by Giving an Angelic Ability to a Joke Villain

Dragon Ball series has gone on for so long, generations have changed and a lot has happened. The series might be a massively popular one, but it is not known for its consistency, even when Dragon Ball Z was airing, Toriyama was known for forgetting a lot of elements he put in the narrative. But one of the things he forgot puts a large hole in the lore and breaks the power balance of the whole franchise.

The character who broke the series is none other than Guldo, who debuted during the Namek Saga. Guldo was the smallest member of the Ginyu Force, a group of elite mercenaries hired by Frieza.

Guldo fought kid Gohan and Krillin and simply utilized the powers to control time in order to place restraints on the two. The way he does this seems to be extremely simple and even seems like a taunt, Guldo...

“This change was super wholesome”: There Won’t Be Another Akira Toriyama But Toyotarou Changing Pan’s Story Gives Me Hope
Image
Dragon Ball has been a comfort series for me for a very long time. From a purely Shonen anime that was focused on power scaling and battles, to a more layered and complex series. This happened because of the increase in the focus placed on the characters.

That is why Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is extremely impressive; it brought something special to the table, especially in terms of its emphasis on family. It was a deeper look into the generational series that Dragon Ball has become.

But while the movie gave us a solid Pan moment, by learning to fly out of self-preservation when pushed by Krillin (mother bird move), the manga went and did something that elevated her character tenfold. Instead of flying away from danger, Pan flies into it, showing the courage worthy of a Saiyan warrior.

Pan’s flying scene might be a sign of what...

Goku Va Sean Schemmel: “I take issue with” American Writers Undoing Years of Akira Toriyama’s Work by Pointlessly Changing Goku in Dragon Ball
Image
Dragon Ball is hands down one of the most popular Shonen franchises ever created, and the way it is written is absolutely perfect. Akira Toriyama crafted this masterpiece the way he wanted to, and fans have loved and appreciated it ever since.

Its story or its protagonist does not need any needless changes or baseless modifications. Thankfully, this is also the sentiment of Sean Schemmel, the English voice actor of Son Goku.

Dragon Ball Super has officially passed a major milestone heading into 2025, with 24 volumes now in circulation. There is no doubt that this is a major achievement for a series that ended its anime run back in 2018.

There has been consistent fan demand for a continuation of the Dragon Ball Super series. Although there have been many arcs accumulating that need anime adaptation, there seems to be no movement from Toei Animation as they seem uninterested.

10 Best Shonen Anime Characters, Ranked by Character Development

Shōnen anime are often viewed as more simplistic than anime of other genres. By extension, this perspective leads the characters in even the best works in the genre to be viewed as bland and generic. However, every Shōnen fan is well-aware that this couldn't be farther from the truth.

While lower-quality Shōnen anime naturally feature weaker characters, heroes like Killua Zoldyck and Edward Elric prove that Shōnen characters can be as complex as any others. Some possess depth from the very start, while others have series-spanning character arcs that keep viewers hooked from start to finish. It's always a grim, bloody affair when an anime character gets themselves killed. Depending on the character and the circumstances of their demise, though, fans may have totally different reactions. While some deaths are tragic and heartbreaking, other deaths may give viewers a sense of relief. That is usually the case when villains meet their fate, often as punishment for all their terrible misdeeds.

Notably, some anime villains were missed when they died, so not all villains are total monsters who deserve to die, but plenty still did. Anime fans couldn't help but say "good riddance" to the most twisted, sadistic, and/or annoying anime antagonists or side characters of all time. The death of those characters prevented them from destroying the world or victimizing more people, and it also meant anime fans didn't have to put up with their noxious, grating behavior any longer.

Wait, Does Superman's First Trailer Make a Sneaky Nod to Dragon Ball? It Seems So.
Image
The first teaser trailer for James Gunn’s Superman is out, and it makes a very sneaky nod to Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball and Superman have always had a lot of overlap thanks to their sci-fi themes and the blatant similarities between Goku and Superman, and while that often sparks arguments between the two fandoms, it often leads to just as much camaraderie between the fandoms, even on a creative level.

The overlap between Dragon Ball and Superman is undeniable, and James Gunn’s Superman is, surprisingly, the latest work to bring it up. The first teaser trailer for the film opens with an injured Superman lying in a crater, and with how his body is positioned, the teaser trailer for James Gunn’s Superman might have referenced Dragon Ball by putting Superman in Yamcha’s iconic death pose.

Dragon Ball Super's Toyotarou Releases New Artwork of Official Comedy Series Featuring Goku & Vegeta
Image
Official Dragon Ball Super artist Toyotarou has revealed a brand-new illustration showcasing characters from another classic Akira Toriyama franchise set within the same universe. Part of an ongoing V Jump project showcasing original Dragon Ball and Akira Toriyama-related artwork by Toyotarou, the new illustration marks something of a revival of an iconic Akira Toriyama parody spin-off that originally ran from 1999 to 2005.

Toyotarou has created original illustrations celebrating Toriyama's rich universe and its extended works for each V Jump issue. For this latest release, the Super artist turned his attention to Nekomajin -- a series starring the magical race of titular cat-like beings -- which playfully lampoons Dragon Ball canon. Translating to "magical cat" or "cat genie," Neko Majin are mischievous yet powerful creatures whose antics serve as the perfect foil to the classic shonen franchise's usual intensity.

Best Shonen Anime That Never Get Old
Image
Some shonen anime give all they've got after just one viewing, such as if they're centered around a simple twist or gimmick that is only entertaining the first time around. In other cases, a shonen anime feels depleted after one viewing because they're just mediocre and aren't worth the time to rewatch. Such series may feel old and pass after just a few years, but not every shonen anime ends up like that. Fortunately for shonen fans, plenty of series stand the test of time and never get old.

Those are deep, high-quality series that always have something to give even after multiple viewings, with plenty of them being bonafide classics. Such series are often the name and face of shonen, the essential pillars that new series hope to emulate. No matter how much time passes, shonen fans are always happy to rewatch these series, and they may view these...

Great Anime That Should Never Be Remade
Image
Anime remakes and reboots have increasingly become common in the past few decades, with several classics given new iterations. This is usually done because the original animated adaptation was found lacking in some way or was too divergent from the manga source material. Despite how popular this trend might be, there are several iconic anime that should never be remade from scratch.

These works are simply too iconic and well-known, with their original anime having defined the genre for generations. Likewise, remaking them will only invite unnecessary comparisons to what has come before, putting a target on the back of these projects. As a result, it's best to let the classic takes on these stories be the only versions, namely if they're part of continuing franchises, anyway.

The Dragon Ball franchise is one of the most popular anime and manga brands in the world, but it's always held immense popularity in its home country of Japan. Most recently, this fandom has been displayed by one of the country's governing officials, and the result was certainly "sweet."

Shigeru Ishiba is the next prime minister of Japan, but for one event, he was also the dastardly, sweet-loving Majin Buu. Best known as the ultimate villain in Dragon Ball Z, the foe's pink, corpulent form became Ishiba's business suit for an opening ceremony. While the choice of clothing might not have been planned on his part, it goes to show just how popular the franchise is despite turning 40 years old in 2024.

Would Gon From Hunter X Hunter Survive These Anime Universes?

Gon Freecss is the young, wide-eyed hero of Hunter X Hunter. An incredibly powerful Enhancer, Gon has shown the potential to one day become one of the most powerful characters in his world. However, even when at his peak in the Chimera Ant Arc, he's still on the weaker side of Nen users.

Gon isn't one of the strongest characters in Hunter X Hunter, and his failures have led to his extended absence from the series, but maybe he'd do better in the world of another anime. Nen is one of the most complex power systems in any anime and, with it, he could have the edge he needs to survive in the worlds of series like Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Chainsaw Man. Alternatively, Gon's relatively low strength and extreme immaturity could cost him once again.
