Her pregnancy with her daughter was written into ALF. She would have a son on the show though.

She had gotten all of Joyce DeWitt's lines in an episode of Three's Company (1976), titled Stanley's Hotline (1979), which aired in 1979, because Joyce had called in sick. Afterwards, Joyce praised her, calling her "one of our favorite guest stars".

The family name was originally Sjodin but got changed somewhere on the journey from Sweden. Her first agent wanted to change it again, but she turned him down, because she thought her whole family would have fun to see the name Schedeen in the credits.

The first three times, she was Jack Tripper's girlfriend Linda; the fourth time as his date Lisa; the final time as a loan officer Louise who rejects Jack's request for a loan, as well as rejecting his advances. She worked with all the regular cast members of the show, with the exception of Ann Wedgeworth, and she said it was the happiest set she had ever been.

She was a contract player at Universal Studios, where she had a recurring role on Emergency! (1972) and was a guest star on numerous series, as well as in several TV movies and feature films.

She grew up on a farm outside of Portland, Oregon, and began acting at the age of 6.

On her daughter Tay Barrett's official website, she said she was "stunned and a little worried" in the first few moments when her daughter came out to her as a lesbian in 2013. However, she was "glad and delighted" that her daughter told her and that she had acknowledged it to herself, because that's "the only path to happiness." Her husband is also very supportive and loving of their daughter, who is a filmmaker and a comedienne.

She took acting lessons at the Portland Civic Theater. She also studied at Portland State University and Fort Wright College in Spokane, Washington. Her first professional job, which paid only room and board, was in a dinner theater on the island of Kauai, then took off to backpack across Europe. She came back and settled in New York. She called a friend with whom she had acted with in Portland and said she had come to New York to act, and her friend replied, 'Oh, no!' It was in response to all the problems that a struggling actress encounters, such as getting an agent, getting to the right classes, getting a survival job and waiting for the magic to start.
