Elvis Presley’s ‘Sunset Boulevard’ Box Set to Anthologize Seventies L.A. Recordings
Image
A new box set will examine Elvis Presley’s third act, collecting rare highlights from his L.A. recording sessions between 1970 and 1975. Sunset Boulevard, out Aug. 1, includes 89 rarities, more than half of which have never come out officially in the U.S., across five discs.

A preview of what the box set holds, “Burning Love (Take Two),” finds Presley’s band sounding groovy and funky, with lots of wah-wah on the guitar, as the King finds his footing with the vocal performance. He sang the more familiar hit version with more vim and vigor,...

Michael Shannon Says George Jones’ ‘Sensitivity, Frailty and Grief’ Drew Him to ‘George & Tammy’
Image
This story about Michael Shannon and his two recent projects, “George & Tammy” and “Waco: The Aftermath” first appeared in the Limited Series / TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

A tweet recently circulated asking, “Who is an actor who may not be the main character, but always makes any movie better?” The answer for many was Michael Shannon, whose tense, often explosive performances frequently inspire listicles ranking his roles by their degree of creepy terror, such as the gentle paranoia of Curtis Laforche in “Take Shelter” and the repressive fanaticism of Nelson Van Alden in “Boardwalk Empire.”

Now the 48-year-old actor has moved center stage with standout lead performances in two Showtime limited series: “George & Tammy,” in which he plays the outsize country rabble-rouser George Jones with masterful vulnerability (opposite Jessica Chastain) and “Waco: The Aftermath,” capturing the slow-burn inner turmoil of FBI negotiator Gary Noesner.

One True Loves Cast & Character Guide
Image
The cast of One True Loves includes a combination of blockbuster movie stars and Broadway talents in a story of three characters who unexpectedly find themselves in a complicated love triangle. Based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Daisy Jones & the Six), the romantic drama follows a woman torn between her thought-dead husband and her new fiancé. It's like a gender-swapped remake of the Cary Grant and Irene Dunne classic My Favorite Wife, minus the screwball comedy antics, and One True Loves is similarly hinged on the appeal of its casting.

While not filled with household names, especially compared to previous movies directed by Andy Fickman (Playing With Fire), which were led by the likes of Dwayne Johnson, John Cena, and Bette Midler, the main and supporting cast of One True Loves consists of recognizable actors from some of the biggest entertainments of the past decade.

Lisa Marie Presley was the closest thing America had to royalty. She was a rock & roll princess, the only daughter of a King. But the rarified existence that Elvis’ fame and success afforded her also confined her — and perhaps presaged her death in January at 54. In an exhaustive feature story, Rs details the heartbreaks, surprise marriages (to Michael Jackson, especially), and troubles with self-identity, substance abuse, and daily life in general that Presley faced. Baz Luhrmann in The Great Gatsby (2013)
Baz Luhrmann’s latest project “Elvis” marks his glamorous return to filmmaking, almost a decade after his last feature film, “The Great Gatsby,” was released in 2013.

Black musicians like Little Richard, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and B.B. King played a major role in influencing Elvis’ development as a singer.

Whether it be fans of Elvis, Butler or Luhrmann (or all three), many may be wondering how to watch “Elvis,” so we’ve gathered all the details below.

The Oscar-Nominated Women Behind ‘Elvis’: Gail Berman, Catherine Martin & Mandy Walker Speak On The Man, The Myth, The Movie
Image
When one thinks of women and Elvis Presley, it’s either his widow Priscilla, his late daughter Lisa Marie, or the legion of ladies left weak in the knee when the badass kid from Tupelo, Mississippi began shaking that moneymaker. In the case of the eight-time Oscar-nominated film Elvis, the front men are writer/director Baz Luhrmann, Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. Behind the camera, the film was entirely made possible by a chorus of women, many of whom are nominated. They include Luhrmann’s partner Catherine Martin, who’s up for the Production Design Oscar with cohorts Beverley Dunne and Karen Murphy; Mandy Walker, for Cinematography; Gail Berman for Best Picture with Martin, Luhrmann, Patrick McCormick and Schuyler Weiss; and Martin again for Costume Design.

Here, Berman, Martin and Walker discuss their passion for Elvis.

Lisa Marie Presley, a singer, songwriter and the daughter of Elvis Presley, was remembered during a funeral service Sunday as a loving mother and an “old soul” who endured tragedy but persevered as a dedicated protector of her father’s legacy as a rock ‘n’ roll pioneer and pop icon.

More than a thousand people gathered on the front lawn of Graceland on a gray, chilly Memphis morning to mourn the death and remember the life of Lisa Marie Presley, who died Jan, 12 after she was taken to a hospital in California.

Lisa Marie Presley Public Memorial Features Star Tributes, Family Salutes, Gospel Interludes
Image
Lisa Marie Presley was remembered Sunday morning by her family, friends, and fans, all gathered at Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee. It was an emotional public memorial, with Elvis Presley’s ex-wife Priscilla, the mother of Lisa Marie, leading the tributes by reading a heartfelt family message during the ceremony.

Priscilla Presley shared a poem by one of Lisa Marie Presley’s 14-year-old daughters.

The poem alluded to a “broken heart” that hastened Lisa Marie’s death at 54. It was an inference to her son Benjamin’s death by suicide in July 2020.

At the end of the poem, Priscilla switched to her own message. “Our hearts are broken. Lisa, we all love you.”

Lisa Marie’s other daughter, actress Riley Keough, had her husband, Ben Smith-Petersen, read a eulogy for her. Riley shared memories of being driven to school by her mom with Aretha Franklin playing, and how she remembered the...

Lisa Marie Presley’s Last Interview Alarmed ‘Extra’ Host Billy Bush: “Something’s Off”
Image
“Extra” host Billy Bush did the final Golden Globes red carpet interview of Lisa Marie Presley, and immediately realized that something was amiss.

Elvis Presley’s only daughter died Thursday at age 54, just two days after walking the red carpet at the Golden Globes. She attended in support of Elvis, the Baz Luhrmann biopic of her father.

Bush recalled his brief red carpet talk with an ashen and unsteady Lisa Marie.

“She was very uneven in her balance,” Bush, 51, told Fox LA. “The speech was very slow. And, definitely, when the interview was over, I turned to my producer next to me and said, ‘Something’s off here.’”

“She was cognizant. She was certainly with it, just a second slow. But she was there. She was definitely there, but just a tad off in some way,” Bush added.

For Bush’s interviews, stars had to navigate two steps to the platform where he stood.

Lisa Marie Presley Seemingly Struggled At Golden Globes Days Before Death

Despite being in good spirits, Lisa Marie Presley was seemingly struggling Tuesday during the 2023 Golden Globes, where she was in attendance to support Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” biopic. The appearance came just two days before Lisa Marie died after suffering cardiac arrest.

Following the news of her death, videos from the Golden Globes showing Lisa Marie having difficulty standing for an interview and needing assistance walking surfaced.

During an interview with ExtraTV, she is seen leaning on talent manager Jerry Schilling, saying, “I’m gonna grab your arm.”

Lisa Marie Presley was rushed to the hospital on Thursday after reportedly suffering cardiac arrest. Just two days ago, she appeared a bit unsteady on the red carpet at the #GoldenGlobes.

‘Elvis’ Star Austin Butler, Baz Luhrmann & Gail Berman On The “Terror” Of Taking On The King – Contenders L.A.
Image
After landing the coveted title role in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama Elvis, Austin Butler barely slept for two years.

“I’d wake up everyday at 3 in the morning and my heart would just be pounding,” the actor said on a panel for the Warner Bros film at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards-season event. “It felt like this immeasurable weight on my shoulders. It felt so mammoth.”

The “terror” he was feeling, he said, had to do with his fear that he couldn’t “possibly ever live up” to the task of portraying the musical icon — a performer with idiosyncrasies familiar to so many around the world.

Butler was joined on the panel at the DGA Theater by Luhrmann and producer Gail Berman, who like the actor have see the risks they took with Elvis affirmed many times...

‘Elvis’ Finally Gets HBO Max Streaming Date
Baz Luhrmann in The Great Gatsby (2013)
Good news for all “Suspicious Minds,” Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” biopic officially has a HBO Max streaming date.

The Austin Butler-led film will be streaming on HBO Max next Friday, Sept. 2, 70 days after the film’s opening in theaters on June 24. While the biopic might not follow fact over fiction to a T, “Elvis” offers a good deal of escapism as audiences relive the days when The King frequently clubs in Mississippi and on Beale Street alongside B.B. King, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup.

The question of when “Elvis” would hit HBO Max became a major question in recent weeks, as Warner Bros. Discovery shifted its strategy when it comes to streaming dates for new releases. While this year’s “The Batman” and “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” were streaming on HBO Max exactly 45 days after they hit theaters, starting with “Elvis” Warner Bros. films are...

Priscilla Presley Reveals Elvis and Colonel Parker Scenes Were the Hardest Part to Watch in the Biopic (Video)
Priscilla Presley in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)
Priscilla Presley revealed that watching the scenes between Elvis and manager Colonel Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic were the hardest to watch and “brought back a lot of memories.”

“He didn’t take Elvis where he wanted to be, and that was hard because I lived it,” she said in an interview with the “Today” show on Tuesday. “So living that, with him, and watching the movie, it brought back a lot of memories.”

Presley also said that her former husband’s longtime manger “should have stayed a publicist,” recalling the arguments between the two in which Elvis explained his desire to be involved in “serious” projects.

Songwriter Mike Stoller on How He and Jerry Leiber Wrote Two Dozen Classics for Elvis — Before the Colonel Cut Them Off From the King
Image
If there were an award to bestow for the most accomplished living American pop songwriter who never doubled as a recording artist, the frontrunner would almost definitely be Mike Stoller, 89, half of one of the most famous writing duos of all time, Leiber & Stoller. Even if the memory of Elvis Presley were completely wiped away, like the Beatles’ in that “Yesterday” movie, this pairing would still be in the history books and collective consciousness for “Stand by Me,” “On Broadway,” “There Goes My Baby,” “Young Blood,” “Kansas City,” “Love Potion #9,” “Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Brown,” “I’m a Woman,” “Ruby Baby,” “Is That All There Is?” and other numbers deeply embedded in pop culture from the mid-‘50s forward.

But we do remember Elvis — and are remembering him more universally than we have since his 1977 death, thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s new “Elvis” biopic. So it’s a perfect chance to catch up with Stoller,...

‘Elvis’ Release Date, Cast and Everything We Know So Far
Baz Luhrmann in The Great Gatsby (2013)
Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” jams into theaters June 24. The film’s hype just keeps growing, especially after receiving a 12-minute standing ovation after its premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

With a runtime of 2 hours and 39 minutes, the biopic has received mixed reviews that range from “trainwreck” to “a sharp edit away from being a classic.” According to Time Magazine’s Stephanie Zacharek, “Luhrmann sees equal value in fact and myth.” The Los Angeles Times’ Justin Chang wrote, “It’s all a bit much, which means it’s just right.”

Audiences will have a chance to find out for themselves later this month, but for now here’s everything we know about “Elvis.”

‘Elvis’ reviews out of Cannes range from ‘How Great Thou Art’ to ‘I Feel So Bad’
Image
Baz Luhrmann has critics “all shook up” after the Cannes Film Festival premiere of “Elvis,” his first feature film since 2013’s “The Great Gatsby.” As befits a director who makes bold artistic choices, reactions to this one are sparking a little more conversation.

The Australian writer-director, whose “Moulin Rouge!” was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar in 2002, did nothing to reel in his signature bombast in telling the cradle-to-grave tale of The Man From Tupelo. The Hollywood Reporter’s positive review opened with an understanding that not everyone will take to Luhrmann’s “brash, glitter-bomb maximalism,” that “leaves you dizzy with its frenetic blast of scorching color, split-screen, retro graphics and more edits per scene than a human eye can count.” But those who can take it (maybe two Advil with that medium popcorn?) will find “a movie that exults in moments of high melodrama as much as in theatrical artifice and vigorously entertaining performance.

Priscilla Presley Praises Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’, Calls Film ‘A True Story Told Brilliantly’
Image
When the first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” dropped earlier this year, the polarizing response was hardly unexpected. The filmmaker is known for his unique visual style and tendency to take artistic license with his source material, so the idea of him making a biopic of one of the most iconic figures in American music was bound to inspire some strong opinions.

While Luhrmann’s unapologetic maximalism will almost certainly divide audiences when “Elvis” is released, the film already has one major supporter. Priscilla Presley, Elvis’ wife from 1967 to 1973, took to social media this week to reveal that Luhrmann showed her the film, along with former manager Jerry Schilling. And it’s safe to say that she’s a fan.

“This story is about Elvis and Colonel Parker’s relationship,” Presley wrote, referring to her ex-husband’s controversial manager Colonel Tom Parker. “It is a true story told brilliantly and creatively that only Baz,...

Luhrmann hasn’t made a film since 2013’s lavish “The Great Gatsby,” which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, and grossed over $350 million worldwide. While not exactly prolific, Luhrmann’s work is certainly distinct, and fans are curious to see the “Moulin Rouge!” director’s take on this American music icon.

Luhrmann co-wrote the screenplay for “Elvis” with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner. The ensemble cast includes Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley, Yola Quartey as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Luke Bracey as Jerry Schilling, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as B.B. King, Dacre Montgomery as Steve Binder and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Jimmie Rodgers.

Production on the film began in Australia in January 2020, but was shut down in...

Netflix is Producing an Animated Elvis Presley Adult Comedy Called Agent King
Netflix is producing an interesting new animated comedy series for adults called Agent King and it will center around Elvis Presley. The series was co-created by Priscilla Presley and John Eddie, and it’s being developed by Sony Pictures Animation, Sony Pictures Television and Authentic Brands Group.

In the series, “Elvis trades in his white jumpsuit for a jet pack when he is covertly inducted into a secret government spy program to help battle the dark forces that threaten the country he loves — all while holding down his day job as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

I’m 100% on board with this series! This sounds like it could be an incredibly awesome and fun show to watch and Presley had this to say in a statement:

“From the time Elvis was a young boy he always dreamed of being the superhero fighting crime and saving the world — Agent King lets him do just that.

Timothée Chalamet in The King (2019)
‘The King’ Film Review: Glorious Documentary Takes American Road Trip With Elvis Presley
Timothée Chalamet in The King (2019)
Director Eugene Jarecki’s “The King,” an audacious travelogue that views America through the windows of Elvis Presley’s Rolls Royce as well as the prism of his career, challenges viewers to embrace the Elvis-as-America metaphor. Some may resist the ride, but those who climb in will be rewarded with a sharp, provocative and surprisingly emotional work of cultural and political criticism.

Jarecki’s big, bold and overreaching film — a trimmed and re-edited version of the documentary that screened at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival under the title “Promised Land” — is in love with but also skeptical of its own central metaphor of Elvis’ career as a version of America’s own history. Executive produced by Steven Soderbergh, Rosanne Cash and Errol Morris, this is a film about the poor boy who loses himself in a rich man’s life and ends up stuffed into a spangled jumpsuit, and about a...

'The King' Review: Doc on Rise and Fall of Elvis Holds Mirror to Trump's America
Elvis Presley
There aren't many documentaries that see Elvis Presley as the bruised soul of America through fun times and bum times. In fact, there’s only one. Formerly called Promised Land, the doc – a spellbinder – is now known as The King, and filmmaker Eugene Jarecki (The House I Live In, Why We Fight) had the risky but totally riveting idea of taking Presley's 1963 Rolls-Royce Phantom V and outfitting it with cameras. The purpose being to drive the customized car cross-country to the places the King traveled, from New York to L.

Inside Elvis Presley's Final Days: "He Was Much Deeper and Smarter Than His Image" (Exclusive)
History has been cruel to Elvis Presley in many ways. To most people under 50, he’s known only as a jumpsuit-wearing joke, the man who inspired countless cheesy impersonators and cheap Vegas wedding chapels. But "he was much deeper and smarter than his image," Jerry Schilling, a member of Elvis' "Memphis Mafia" inner circle and an executive producer of the new HBO documentary Elvis Presley: The Searcher, exclusively tells Closer Weekly. "Elvis was anything but comical. He certainly had a great sense of humor, but we wanted viewers to get to know him as a human being." That’s why Jerry, with Elvis’ ex-wife, Priscilla Presley (who also exec-produced the film), enlisted confidantes, experts, and musical disciples like Bruce Springsteen and the late Tom Petty to offer new insight into the King for this sprawling, three-and-a-half-hour doc. "Elvis was a light for all of us," Tom says in the film.

'Elvis Presley: The Searcher' Pulls Back the Veil on the King
Elvis Presley
The Elvis Presley stories repeated most often these days are rarely flattering. Some emphasize his lethal appetite for fatty foods and prescription painkillers; others dwell on bizarre anecdotes like his meeting with Richard Nixon, where he warned the president that the Beatles had an "anti-American spirit." The overall picture in these tales depicts a sweaty, bloated country bumpkin in a sequined jumpsuit who is quick to fire a gun at his own television set. It's a pathetic, cartoon distortion of the man that has little relation to the musical genius from Tupelo,...

Apple Scraps Elvis Presley TV Series from Weinstein TV In Light of Harvey Weinstein Sexual Harassment Scandal
Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
The Weinstein Co. had been touting its partnership with the Elvis Presley estate to produce the rocker’s first-ever TV biopic to be shot at Graceland. But it appears that may not be happening now, as Apple Music, where the project was set up, confirmed Monday that instead it had been scrapped.

The project, first announced in September 2016, was still in the early stages of development. But it represents the latest major fall out from the still unfolding Harvey Weinstein scandal, and comes as The Weinstein Co. mulls its entire future as a production company.

According to Deadline, which first broke the news, Weinstein Co. COO David Glasser is now shopping the series elsewhere, including to another network that had previously been outbid by Apple. It’s important to note that the Elvis show had been in the works at Apple Music prior to the launch of a new TV...

Weinstein Television Is Developing A Groundbreaking Elvis Biopic
2017 will see the 40th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley, and it is presumably this milestone that Weinstein Television is aiming for with a high profile biopic of the legendary entertainer. Elvis will be groundbreaking, in that it will see the company partner with the Presley Estate, along with Priscilla Presley (widow of Elvis), Jerry Schilling (member of Presley’s entourage), Harvey Weinstein and David Glasser (also of The Weinstein Company) as executive producers.

The 8-10 episode event will be based on the book Elvis, by Dave Marsh – a comprehensive study of the life and times of the man who changed music and pop culture forever. But, it is the unprecedented access to the star’s Graceland property, his private journals, and his personal effects that will make this project truly unique. Evidently, this type of opportunity has never before been provided.

In announcing the project, Priscilla Presley gave...
