During the Somernites Cruise event on June 28 in Somerset, Ky., stuntman Raymond Kohn drove a replica of the “Dukes of Hazzard” car known as the General Lee over the town’s fountain square (via Commonwealth Journal). The car jumped 150 feet in front of an audience of fans and locals. According to the local outlet, 35,000 spectators came to show support for the jump, which was inspired by the series, which aired from 1979 to 1985.
The event was held for the Somernites Cruises’ 25th annual classic car cruise, which runs each year between April to October.
“It’s done,” Somernites Cruise Executive Director Keith Floyd told the Journal after the event took place. “Praise the Lord, everybody’s safe. [Kohn] is doing great.”

Alongside taking over the TV landscape with a staggering array of series, Taylor Sheridan has been engaging in a sort of Western boosterism. The man who rose to TV prominence by creating and scripting the hugely successful neo-Western series "Yellowstone" has since churned out multiple spin-offs alongside a raft of other series, many of which are either Westerns themselves or inspired by the genre. At this point, there are almost a dozen shows under the Sheridan umbrella, including a Western series that you've probably never heard of but which sums up the man's modus operandi.
"The Last Cowboy" is a reality competition series that focuses on the sport of horse reining, wherein contestants compete in the "Run for a Million" event, which was started by none other than Sheridan himself. According to the actor’s wife Candace Kaniecki, he died unexpectedly on Thursday in Los Angeles, TMZ reported. His cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
Hurst’s co-star Ben Jones, who played Cooter Davenport on the 1979-’85 CBS sitcom, announced his death on Facebook after Hurst was scheduled to appear at Cooter’s Place in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee next month.
“It doesn’t seem right that Rick Hurst passed away this afternoon. When something so unexpected happens, it is ‘harder to process,’ as the current expression goes,” he said in a statement. “I have known Rick for over 45 years and there wasn’t a minute of that time that he didn’t leave me smiling or laughing. Sure he was a professional comedian, but mostly he just had a heart as big as Texas.

Despite ending nearly 15 years ago, Smallville remains a classic among both Superman fans and casual audiences. The hit series lasted for 10 seasons and starred Tom Welling as a young Clark Kent before donning his signature blue, red, and yellow suit. What set Smallville apart however is its split emphasis on Clark and his eventual nemesis, Lex Luthor, portrayed by Michael Rosenbaum. The two young men cross paths when the former saves the latter after his car careens into a lake, subsequently forming a brother-like friendship.
Aside from Welling and Rosenbaum, the cast included Kristin Kreuk, Erica Durance, John Glover, Sam Jones III, Justin Hartley, John Schneider, and Annette O'Toole, among others. Though its cast was a major part of the series' appeal, another factor in its success was its reverential treatment of Superman's history. When Roseanne Barr was fired from the rebooted Roseanne in 2018, the producers decided that, in order to continue, the series would need to change. Instead of the sarcastic loudmouth Roseanne Conner as the center of her family, John Goodman’s Dan Conner, Laurie Metcalf’s Jackie Harris and Sara Gilbert’s Darlene Conner stepped in to fill the void, making it a show with a bit less attitude and an increased focus on grief in light of Barr’s character’s death. These changes allowed the show — now rebranded as The Conners — to last for seven seasons.
However, not all shows are smart enough to fully pivot after a cast departure. Instead, many just end up replacing that person with a new character who has pretty much the exact same personality. The hope, presumably, is to keep whatever dynamics a show already possesses.

Before James Gunn’s Dcu was even a thought, before Henry Cavill took to the skies as the Man of Steel, and before The CW assembled the Arrowverse, Smallville redefined Superman for a new generation. Running from 2001 to 2011, the show dared to ask: what if Clark Kent was just a small-town teen trying to get through puberty and algebra without heat-visioning his classmates? With Tom Welling’s square jaw, Kristin Kreuk’s Lana “meteor freak” drama, and Michael Rosenbaum’s perfectly bald Lex, Smallville turned Superman into a modern superhero again. While the show wrapped over a decade ago, its legacy is still being talked about today—especially by one of its biggest stars. In an interview with The Series Regular, John Schneider, who played the best Jonathan Kent of all time (according to fans), dropped a truth bomb that’s shocked many Superman fans: “The movies are just Ok.

It’s wild to think about, but Smallville first hit our screens 24 years ago. Back in 2001, it did something no other Superman adaptation, or rather any superhero adaptation, had really done before—it took us into Clark Kent’s early years.
Instead of jumping straight to the caped hero we all recognize, Smallville lets us see a teenage Clark, awkwardly navigating high school, friendships, and self-discovery while slowly coming to terms with his destiny. It wasn’t about Superman, the larger-than-life icon—it was about Clark, the person. And that’s what made it so easy to connect with.
For ten seasons, we got to watch him stumble, grow, and finally step into the hero we all knew he was meant to be. The show brought in classic Superman characters, but it did so in a way that felt natural, like they were always part of Clark’s world.

It's possible that "somebody save me" is a thought that crossed Tom Welling's mind while he was filming the earlier seasons of Smallville. During a MegaCon panel that celebrated different iterations of Superman, at which Collider's Maggie Lovitt was in attendance, the actor talked about the first few seasons of the hit series and how the on and off-screen relationship with John Schneider (The Haves and the Have Nots) was fundamental for him to build some self-confidence.

The stars of Smallville recently discussed the Superman prequel series, revealing what mementos they took from the set. The fan-favorite The CW series, which continues to be popular, ended its remarkable ten-season run fourteen years ago.
Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kreuk, and Erica Durance were all on the Smallville MegaCon panel. Cbr asked the actors what they had taken from the set, to which the Clark Kent/Superman actor Welling responded, "Just my memories." His co-stars, however, were not quite as reticent. "I got the Smallville jacket. I have Lex's goggles. A picture of the crazy doll," Lex Luthor actor Rosenbaum stated. Kreuk revealed she had kept a memento from one of the wildest Smallville episodes, "Thirst," which had her character Lana Lang turn into a vampire. "My vampire teeth and de-kryptonite necklace," she responded. Durance, who portrayed Lois Lane, kept her character's name tag and entire wardrobe.

When your favorite TV show ends, you can feel like mourning. Sometimes, though, a show has gone on for so long that there's nothing left for it to do except to end. That was where "Smallville" was in 2011, when it began its 10th and final season on the CW.
"Smallville" followed a young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) during his high school years. Running storylines included Clark's relationship with girl next door Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) and his friendship with future nemesis, Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum). Along the way, the show included a monster of the week formula where Clark battled people given superpowers from Kryptonite — "Smallville" was very consciously "Superboy" by way of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer."
Season 10 was not announced to be the final season at the time, but the writers approached it as such. (The finale of "Smallville" is literally titled "Finale.") For one, while "Smallville" wasn't failing,...

Nerd movies, like geeks themselves, have come a long way over the last few decades. When films about nerds and geeks started becoming popular in the 1980s, they showed the characters as losers, misfits, and outsiders who had to face bullies, who were often the cool, popular kids. Since the 80s, the roles have stayed the same concerning their brains and status as misfits, but these characters have become more prestigious and important, as brains are more important than brawn in today's society.
When it comes to movies about nerds and geeks, they are no longer just about nerds being picked on by jocks and having to survive. They have become films about the smartest kids in the class doing things that no one ever imagined they could do. Geeks today are cool and often have more in common with regular people than the jocks that used to rule the class.

The CW’s Smallville told the story of Clark Kent before he was Superman, starting in his teen years. Clark doesn’t fully transform into the famous comic book hero until the final episode of the series. The hit superhero show created by Al Gough and Miles Millar featured many recognizable names from the Superman comics, like Lana Lang, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen.
In DC Comics’ Superman, Jimmy Olsen was a young photographer at the Daily Planet and good friends with Lois Lane and Clark Kent. Smallville’s Jimmy was also a photojournalist, and he was a love interest for Chloe Sullivan. Introducing Jimmy Olsen in Smallville created some discrepancies in the timeline and ultimately led to Jimmy’s death on the show.

Smallville is the longest-running live-action superhero series, providing a decade of interesting takes on the Superman mythos. The show stars Tom Welling as Clark Kent and Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor. It primarily serves as a Superman origin story, yet it also gives his nemesis a fairly emotional origin as well. Their dynamic fueled the earlier episodes before later seasons took on other threats within the DC universe. A big draw of Smallville is the stellar cast, which also included Annette O'Toole, John Schneider, John Glover, Kristen Kreuk, Erica Durance, and more.

Before the invention of the TiVo and the birth of the streaming era meant that you could watch whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted, families gathered around television sets to soak in whatever the networks had programmed for their prime-time blocks. When a new TV show premiered on one of the few channels available, millions of Americans tuned in to see what was in store.
Some of the biggest television show premieres of all time are long-lasting and classic sitcoms, while others have been forgotten over time. In the bygone era of gathering around the TV at a set time, new shows that premiered on the big networks always had a chance to make a splash with audiences.

Smallville remains one of the best superhero origin stories of all time, despite never getting past the actual origin story elements. Early in the rise of the superhero genre, Warner Bros. Television took the most famous and powerful superhero of all time back to basics. And thanks to an incredible cast, creative writers, and compelling stories told through the lens of a young adult coming-of-age story, it was a huge hit, paving the way for what would ultimately become The CW's Arrowverse.

The TV series Smallville was a beloved show, especially in its earlier seasons. This was due to its more down-to-earth tone and relatable characters, which made it more of a drama than a superhero series. John Schneider's Jonathan Kent continues to be seen as a standout character from the series.
The adoptive father of Clark Kent, a.k.a. Kal-El, Jonathan's character was central in molding him from a young boy into Superman. Sadly, Schneider wasn't around for the entire series, with his initial exit being quite drastic. He did come back, however, cementing how important he was to the series' themes.
Updated by Alex Roush on November 21, 2024: John Schneider's portrayal of Jonathan Kent on Smallville was the first time the character had truly been delved into. This allowed Schneider's version to expound on the character like never before, which is why Jonathan Kent's Smallville death was so tragic.

Smallville adapts Golden Age Superman and Superboy comics for a modern audience, showing the Man of Steel's upbringing in Smallville, Kansas, and his journey to becoming an icon. The town is plagued by disgruntled citizens imbued with powers from Kryptonian radiation, and it's usually up to Clark and his friends to save the day.
Golden Age Superman stories were notoriously weird, and Smallville perfectly captures that weirdness, balancing the interpersonal relationships of teenagers with world-ending threats. There are two kinds of weirdness: good weirdness comes when storylines start to explore goofy concepts like those from the original comics, while bad weirdness comes from beloved characters thrust into uncomfortable situations. Smallville tries to lean into good weirdness, but sometimes the bad kind seeps through.

Superman is one of the most popular characters in the entire DC Universe, and the popular comic book "The Death of Superman" has served as inspiration for several projects throughout the years. In animation, live-action, and even video games, the story of Superman's death has been a popular point of adaptation, featuring Doomsday or even bigger villains. While some series have adapted details loosely, including in the Justice League cartoon, where Superman did not actually die but was sent to the future, others have been much more faithful to the source material.
Superman's darkest story has been made even heavier with the recent episodes of Superman and Lois. Following a clash with Doomsday, the show has focussed on the trauma of how this has affected others, and this follows a long line of adaptations that have done the same. Seeing this iconic storyline being adapted for a new series has...

Smallville star Tom Welling discusses the possibilities of the Multiverse in relation to his Crisis on Infinite Earths appearance.
Speaking to ScreenRant, Welling discussed the ways in which his various reprisals of the role of Clark Kent, aka Superman, were never quite in line with his portrayal of the role on Smallville. As such, Welling isn't certain that the Smallville Superman was the one who gave up his powers on The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths event. "I was asked to be in a lot of the other shows after Smallville ended, I was asked to sort of appear in them as Clark and it never felt like their tone was the same as Clark was or what Smallville was," Welling explained. A Smallville animated series has been in the works for years. While the original cast is ready to lend their voices to their animated cartoon counterparts, Tom Welling says they still need to get the go-ahead from DC execs.
"We've been talking about it for a few years," Welling said during an appearance at the Terrificon convention in Connecticut on Aug 18 (via KryptonSite). "We want to do a Smallville comic book and animated series, and then we would all voice the characters. We've already got an artist, and we have a poster. We haven't been able to share it yet, but Lionel Luthor is looming over everybody, and it's really cool. But we just can't do anything without DC saying we can do it. Allison Mack didn't plan to return for Smallville season 10, wanting to move on from the show after a long tenure in it. Mack returned to wrap up Chloe's story, citing fan commitment. Chloe's narrative continued in Smallville Season 11 comics.
Allison Mack was a regular fixture of the DC Universe in Smallville where she played Chloe Sullivan, but she only appeared in 6 episodes of the show's final season. Sullivan had the second-longest tenure on the series, behind only Tom Welling, and appeared in 205 episodes, including many of Smallville's most rewatchable episodes. The Superman prequel series pulled the bulk of its main characters from the comic book lore of Superman and Superboy. However, Allison Mack's Chloe Sullivan was an exception, with the charismatic journalist character being an original addition by the show's writers.
Considering the regular departures of the cast from the series, Allison Mack's persistence on the show is notable.

John Schneider's portrayal of Jonathan Kent in Smallville was influential, creating a strong and loving father figure for Clark. Smallville evolved over its seasons, with key character departures like Michael Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor impacting the show. Schneider's departure after Jonathan Kent's death in the 100th episode set Clark on a path of growth and self-discovery.
John Schneider played an important role in the DC Universe as Jonathan Kent on the Superman prequel Smallville for 5 seasons. Smallville fan art reveals Tom Welling's potential Superman costume. Tom Welling was a perfect Clark Kent, but the show lacked a full Superman reveal. A possible Smallville animated spin-off could show Welling's Superman.
Smallville may have disappointed fans with a lacking Superman costume reveal in the finale, but some fan art has finally showcased exactly what Tom Welling in the suit could have looked like. Smallville aired on The WB at the end of 2001, and continued for 10 seasons, transitioning to The CW when the channel combined with Upn in 2006. The show provided insight into the early years of the world's most powerful superhero.
Smallville did an excellent job providing an origin for the Man of Steel, and showcasing the struggles of living with superpowers as a young man in school. However, it suffered from a lack of development when the show never saw the boy wonder become the Man of Tomorrow.

My Adventures with Superman is one of the most brilliant superhero animated series. Created by Brendan Clougher, Jake Wyatt, and Josie Campbell, the Adult Swim series tells the story of Superman aka Clark Kent as he starts his new job at The Daily Planet, with his roommate Jimmy Olson, and his senior intern at The Daily Planet who is none other than Lois Lane. They quickly become a team and try to bring in big stories so that they can become real reporters while Clark also tries to become the hero he is meant to be. My Adventures with Superman has great action but the brilliant thing about the series is that it isn’t an action series about Superman, it’s a series about a superhero and his relationships as he figures out who he really is. So, if you love the heart, optimism, great story, and fantastic animation...

Annette O'Toole's portrayal of Martha Kent in Smallville redeemed her from her role as Lana Lang in Superman III. Fans' intense affection for Superman has been evident throughout history, impacting adaptations like Smallville. Martha Kent served as the emotional anchor in Smallville, guiding Clark and Jonathan while embodying strength and compassion.
The iconic Superman-inspired series Smallville is a story of redemption, at least for one of its actors. Annette O'Toole is known by fans of a certain age as Martha Kent, Clark Kent's mother. However, O'Toole is known to an older generation of fans, not as Clark's mother, but his first-ever love, Lana Lang in Superman III. While nothing that went wrong with the Superman film franchise is her fault, the time O'Toole spent as Martha Kent helped redeem the actor's place in the legend of the world's most popular superhero.

According to The Wrap, Pruitt Taylor-Vince has been cast as Jonathan Kent in James Gunn’s Superman. I can’t say that’s who I expected to play Clark Kent’s adoptive human father in the movie, but I’ve always been a big fan of the actor, who has appeared in everything from The X-Files to Deadwood to The Walking Dead.
Pruitt Taylor-Vince will join the long line of actors who have brought Jonathan Kent to life in movies and television, including Glenn Ford in the original Superman movie, John Schneider in Smallville, Kevin Costner in Man of Steel, and many more. As I mentioned above, Taylor-Vince might not feel like the obvious choice for the role, but he’s a true talent and I hope fans give him a chance.
