‘Sing Sing’ Co-Writer Previews ‘Train Dreams’ Alongside New Image Featuring Joel Edgerton and Kerry Condon [Exclusive]
Image
Joel Edgerton’s Train Dreams premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival to widespread critical acclaim — the film earned a 97% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. As part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event, we are thrilled to partner with Netflix to preview a new image of Edgerton in Train Dreams, and we also had the chance to ask director Clint Bentleya few questions about the film. Bentley also wrote the script with his long-time collaborator Greg Kwedar.

Train Dreams is Bentley's first movie since Sing Sing, which he wrote the script for while Kwedar directed. When asked what Bentley took away from working on Sing Sing that he brought to Train Dreams, he spoke about bringing the “real world” into a film and allowing a movie to “evolve to accommodate the surprises of life.”

"In writing Sing Sing, Greg and I always left space for the script to...

Real Reason Why Paul Schneider Left Parks and Rec After Season 2
Image
When Parks and Recreation premiered in 2009, Paul Schneider’s character, Mark Brendanawicz, was positioned as a major player in the ensemble cast. A city planner in Pawnee, Mark was introduced as a cynical counterpart to Leslie Knope’s unshakable optimism.

He had a history with Leslie and quickly became entangled in the plot to turn an abandoned pit into a park. In those early episodes, Mark wasn’t just a supporting character; he was central to the story’s heartbeat.

Yet by the end of season two, Mark was gone. Abruptly written out of the show, he made his final appearance in the season two finale, “Freddy Spaghetti,” and was never mentioned again. It was as if he had never existed. So, what happened?

Mark’s exit was especially odd because Parks and Rec became known for its recurring characters and emotional callbacks. Fans often wonder why he left, why no one acknowledged him again,...

Adam Scott Has A Surprising Idea For Potential Parks and Recreation Spinoff
Image
Long before his success with the Apple TV+ series,Severance, Adam Scott had a role inParks and Recreation. The acor recentrlt revealed who he thinks should lead a potential spinoff series.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Scott was asked which Parks and Recreation character he would choose to center a spinoff around. "Probably Jerry [portrayed by Jim O'Heir]," the actor said. "I think because when we left the show, he was mayor, still, of Pawnee. I'd like to see how that worked out, if there were any scandals, or if he was able to keep his powder dry and run the town in the way we know it should be run."

O'Heir portrayed the lovable Garry "Jerry" Gergich on Parks and Recreation from the series' pilot episode. The character was an optimistic and kind-hearted employee of the Department of Parks and Recreation in Pawnee, Indiana. Despite his longstanding presence and positive demeanor, Jerry...

Netflix Sets Theatrical Release Date for Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones' 97% Rotten Tomatoes Drama

Joel Edgerton was last seen playing a variety of Jason Dessens in the first season of Dark Matter on Apple TV+, but the next project from the star just took a major step forward. Edgerton stars alongside Kerry Condon and Felicity Jones in Train Dreams, a drama following an average man struggling to adjust to his new environment after losing his family. Not only has Netflix debuted a new image of Edgerton in Train Dreams, which can be found below, but the streamer has also announced that the film will play in select theaters starting November 21. This is an interesting step for Netflix, a studio that usually sends most of its movies straight to streaming, but it could signify a changing of the tide in the months and years to come.

'Star Trek: Picard' Star Leads 'E.T.' Meets 'Alien' Sci-Fi Thriller in First 'Xeno' Trailer [Exclusive]
Image
What if E.T. was less cute and cuddly, and instead resembled a razor-jawed H.R. Giger creature from Alien? And what if that alien's appetites tended more towards living flesh than delicious Reese's Pieces? Those questions are asked and answered in the new Collider-exclusive trailer for Xeno, a new science fiction adventure film starring Lulu Wilson. It's a heartfelt story of a girl and her gruesome alien pal like no other. Xeno will hit theaters on September 19.

In the new trailer, Wilson is Renee Rowan, a teenage girl who has an affinity for unlovable creatures, as evidenced by the snake living in her terrarium. But that affinity is going to be put to the test when she meets Xeno, a snarling quadropedal alien beast with a taste for livestock. Nevertheless, the two form a bond, which becomes a big problem when an alien-hunting government task force led by Jonathan Keyes...

Sitcom Cast Departures That Didn’t Hurt the Show One Bit
Image
When Steve Carell left The Office, the show never recovered. And when Chelsea Peretti left Brooklyn 99, a critical part of its cast’s dynamic was lost, which cost the show some of its edge. Usually, when a sitcom loses a character, no matter the reason, the show suffers. Sometimes, however, a departure is more akin to when a butcher trims the fat; the show is tightened up and, because time is no longer wasted on them, it’s an overall improved result, if anyone even notices at all.

Here are five such times where a character was removed from a sitcom, arguably for the better…

1 Mark Brendanawicz on ‘Parks and Recreation’

While actor Paul Schneider didn’t do anything wrong as the character Mark Brendanawicz on Parks and Recreation, he was meant to be a love interest for Leslie Knope, yet there was absolutely no chemistry between them. And...

Usually, when an established sitcom suddenly adds a new character, it’s a sign of desperation — and one most viewers can see right through. This, in turn, provokes them to attack without mercy. Just think of poor Cousin Oliver, the cute kid brought in for Season Five of The Brady Bunch who is still blamed for the show’s cancellation. Scooby-Doo fans similarly still revile Scrappy-Doo, and even Andy from The Office has his share of haters.

On the other hand, sometimes new blood is exactly the injection of energy a show needs. Here are five examples of new additions that actually made a series much, much better…

1 Frank Reynolds on ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’

Season One of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, while pretty rough, had an undeniable spark. The only problem? No one watched it. That’s why the head of FX insisted the show bring in...

How Parks And Recreation Almost Became A Spin-Off Of The Office
Image
In April of 2008, writer and producer Michael Schur added a new title to his resumé after getting his start on "Saturday Night Live" and, of course, Greg Daniels' American remake of "The Office". Before "The Office" ended in 2013, Schur was pulled away to work on a show that was initially intended to be a spin-off of the mockumentary set at a Pennsylvania paper company ... a little show called "Parks and Recreation."

Wait, so was "Parks and Recreation" really originally intended to just be a spin-off of "The Office?" The answer to that, amazingly, is yes. According to an archived version of an article in New York Magazine from 2009, the year that "Parks and Recreation" premiered, when Ben Silverman took a role as the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment, the executive asked Daniels and Schur to create a spin-off of the massively popular series. As it happens, though, Schur and Daniels ended...

Why Rashida Jones' Ann Perkins Left Parks And Recreation
Image
A decade after it ended, the NBC comedy "Parks and Recreation" continues to be one of the most beloved, online-favorite sitcoms of the 21st century. The show's blend of upbeat optimism in the form of local-government official Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and its scathing satire of small-town America have both held up strongly. But while seven seasons of "Parks and Recreation" have aged well in retrospect, the fact that it was often a show on the bubble of either being renewed or cancelled by the network on which it aired, NBC, may well have contributed to the departure of one of its stars.

The other thing to keep in mind here is that while those seven seasons had many strong episodes, engaging arcs, and entertaining characters, there was something of a revolving door with cast members. The first and second seasons featured Paul Schneider as city planner Mark Brendanawicz before...

Watch This Overlooked Sci-Fi Series Instead Of Netflix's The Electric State
Image
Netflix's "The Electric State" isn't very good. By most metrics, it's a complete disaster — a movie so expensive and so devoid of purpose that it honestly defies logic. That's especially true if you've read the book it's based on by Swedish writer and artist Simon Stålenhag.

Stålenhag's books each center on different sci-fi ideas, but the format generally stays the same. They're big books filled with gorgeous digital art of worlds very like our own, but also different. These images are accompanied by one manner or another of prose, telling a linear story or at the very least adding context to the scenes being shown. Where "The Electric State" shows an American landscape devastated by drone warfare and VR addiction, "Tales from the Loop" and "Things from the Flood," Stålenhag's two prior books, follow a Swedish town and the mysterious scientific research facility it holds, as well as the...

Sundance Review: Train Dreams Captures a Small Life on a Big Scale
Image
There is a moment in Train Dreams, directed by Clint Bentley, where a tree gracefully falls to the earth, surrounded by lush green. Particles explode from the impact, the sunlight illuminating these small, insignificant specs. As the frame holds for an extra few seconds, these particles gleam as beautiful as anything else in the image. It’s a powerful exclamation that underlines the larger theme of the film: there are wonders both big and small. Tragedy, too, and who will remember any of it? And, perhaps more importantly, does it matter if anybody does?

Written by Bentley and Greg Kwedar, based on the novella by Denis Johnson, Train Dreams tells the story of Robert Grainier (Joel Edgerton), a logger living and working in the Pacific Northwest during the early part of the twentieth century. He is husband to Gladys (Felicity Jones) and father to their little baby Katie. They live...

‘Train Dreams’ Review: Joel Edgerton Mines Depth, Beauty and Sadness From an Ordinary Life in Ravishing Contemplation of Man and Nature
Image
The passage of time is somehow both fluid and jagged in Clint Bentley’s soulful film of the Denis Johnson novella, Train Dreams. It flows or ambles or bumps along, passing over moments of joy, shock, discovery, lonesomeness or devastating sadness, but just as often over seemingly mundane experiences that only later reveal their significance when we look back. The cumulative weight of all those moments that make up an ordinary life is the subject of this elegiac macro-miniaturist portrait of an itinerant worker in the early 1900s Pacific Northwest, played by Joel Edgerton in what might be the best work of his career.

Novelistic yet never page-bound, the story is shaped by superb acting and finely etched characters that seem to have been lifted from a long-ago time, with faces right out of a Walker Evans catalogue; by gifted cinematographer Adolpho Veloso’s painterly eye for compositions and calm,...

'The Family Stone' Holiday Rom-Com Ranks #2 on Prime Video Streaming Chart
Image
Now that the Thanksgiving food coma is behind us, it's time to look at the joy and cheer of the holiday season, and there is no better way to do that than with some Christmas movie favorites. While films such as Home Alone and A Christmas Story are a go-to for many, other, more low-key choices have also moved up the ranks over the years. That has happened with the 2005 comedy-drama The Family Stone, a film that received mixed reviews upon release but was a financial success. In the years since its initial debut, the film has gained in popularity, even if it's a bit divisive due to some of the dramatic turns it takes despite its cheerful holiday setting.

A quick glance at the latest Prime Video chart shows that The Family Stone is currently ranked second, a strong showing as holiday movie watching kicks into high gear. Some...

‘Nutcrackers’ Director David Gordon Green On Applying Blumhouse Model To Comedy, “Disservice” Modern Multiplexes Are Doing To Moviegoers
Image
Not every year brings a new holiday classic, but this Friday, David Gordon Green slips one under the tree.

Snapped up by Hulu following its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, the film is Nutcrackers, a little dramedy Green shot out on a small-town Ohio farm late last year, with an interim agreement in hand. Ben Stiller stars as Mike, a workaholic who heads out to the Buckeye State to look after his recently orphaned nephews, developing a closer bond with the rowdy bunch than he had anticipated.

Green’s way into the project was unconventional — engineering a film around the charismatic young sons of a close film school friend. After years steeping himself in horror, between an Exorcist film and a Halloween trilogy, the project marked a return to his humanist roots, as well as his first feature comedy in almost a decade. But while pivoting creatively, as he’s known to do,...

A Divisive Horror Director Also Helmed This Underrated 21-Year-Old Romance Movie
Image
The independent film to major blockbuster pipeline is very alive and very real. Long gone are the days of music video directors being plucked from the streets and put directly on to multi-million dollar movie sets. Filmmakers of today need to slowly work their way up, working on a wide variety of personal and for-hire projects, to finally secure their spot as the genre filmmaker theyve always wanted to be. This was the case for David Gordon Green, the director of The Exorcist: Believer and the new Halloween trilogy,

The journey is just as important as the destination, though, and on David Gordon Greens journey, he produced some of the most heartfelt and personal projects out there. Among them is 2003s All the Real Girls. A fresh, emotional, and complicated romantic drama that will tug at the heartstrings like no other, All the Real Girls deserves to be remembered.

Adam Scott, Rashida Jones, Jim O'Heir, Nick Offerman, Amy Poehler, Chris Pratt, Retta, Aziz Ansari, and Aubrey Plaza in Parks and Recreation (2009)
One Of Parks & Rec's Best Couples Wouldn't Exist Without The Worst Character In The Entire Show
Adam Scott, Rashida Jones, Jim O'Heir, Nick Offerman, Amy Poehler, Chris Pratt, Retta, Aziz Ansari, and Aubrey Plaza in Parks and Recreation (2009)
Parks and Recreation is superb at constructing highly meaningful friendships and relationships between its main characters. Besides the series' lead couple, Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott) and Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler), the storyline following the city manager, Chris Traeger (Rob Lowe) and Nurse Ann Perkins (Radisha Jones) is one of the most well-constructed and developed relationships in the entire series. Falling under the slow-burn trope, the two don't reconnect romantically until later in season 5, when he realizes his feelings for her. That being said, the Parks and Recreation couple wouldn't exist without the worst character in the show.

Chris Traeger arrives in Pawnee in the second season of Parks and Recreation, episode 23, "The Master Plan," alongside Ben Wyatt to assess Pawnee's funds and assist with the City Council's severe budget cuts. Unquestionably, the pair were the best additions to the series in the aftermath of Mark Brendanawicz (Paul Schneider) leaving Parks and Recreation,...

Four Great Sitcom Characters Who Weren’t Added Until Season Two
Image
While sometimes adding a new character is the worst thing that can happen to a sitcom (looking at you new kids and babies), other times it elevates a show to a whole new level of hilarity. Just imagine how much less trouble the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia gang would have gotten into without Frank Reynolds bankrolling them? Or how many fewer times the word “literally” would have been uttered on Parks and Recreation if Rob Lowe never joined the cast?

It’s literally frightening to imagine it. So instead, check out this list of great sitcom characters who didn’t arrive until their show’s second season.

4 Michael Harris on ‘Newhart’

After the success of The Bob Newhart Show, Bob Newhart’s second sitcom, Newhart struggled to find its footing in Season One. The show was about New Yorkers Dick and Joanna Louden (Newhart and Mary Frann) buying a quiet inn in Vermont,...

Original Parks & Recs Star Has Conditions For Revival Return
Image
Rashida Jones won't agree to a Parks & Rec revival without a good reason, even though the cast remains close. The beloved show, with confusing timelines and lots of laughs, may not reunite anytime soon, according to Jones. Jones wants to wait for the right moment and a solid idea before considering a return to Pawnee with her co-stars.

Original Parks & Recreation star Rashida Jones has a major demand before she will agree to a revival. Jones, who played Ann Perkins, worked alongside Amy Poehler, Paul Schneider, Aziz Ansari, and more respected stars for years before the show concluded. It ran from 2009 to 2015 and had a special release in 2020 during the pandemic. While the show is still beloved and Parks & Rec's many confusing timelines still draw laughter, the cast is unlikely to reunite for a revival in the near future.

While appearing on the Bingeworthy podcast, Jones...

Rashida Jones On Why ‘Parks And Recreation’ Cast Was “Holding On For Dear Life” Throughout NBC Run
Image
Rashida Jones recalls her time on Parks and Recreation and reveals why the cast felt they were “holding on for dear life” throughout its run on NBC.

In a new interview, Jones opened up about the roller coaster of a ride starring in the sitcom as the ratings did not favor the show.

“Every single season, we were like, this is it. They’re not gonna want us back,” Jones said on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast. “At one point we were canceled and then the president of NBC got off the plane and changed his mind. It was like, ‘Eh, don’t cancel it yet, I guess.’ It was not really a thing at all.”

Parks and Recreation has recently gained popularity as viewers have discovered it via streaming services, saying that the show “is kind of iconic now” and that “it’s like one of those great comedies of that time,...
