Sid And Nancy Screens at Schlafly Bottleworks February 7th – ‘Strange Brew’
“I’ll never look like Barbie. Barbie doesn’t have bruises.”

Sid And Nancy (1986) screens Wednesday, February 7th at 8pm at Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar (7260 Southwest Ave.- at Manchester – Maplewood, Mo 63143) as part of Webster University’s Award-Winning Strange Brew Film Series. Admission is $5

Sid And Nancy, the powerful and mesmerizing biopic centred around the life and times, and general demise and downward spiral of The Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his drug-addicted American girlfriend Nancy Spungen is nothing short of harrowing and moving in equal measure. This is thanks in part to both the directorial eye of Alex Cox, and the performances of the two leads Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb. Oldman portrays Vicious as he apparently really was, a moody young man who was easily led, as is portrayed in the movie. Chloe Webb is equally as good, portraying Nancy as a volatile and often...

The Breaking Point (1950)
Criterion Collection Announces August 2017 Additions, Including Restored ‘Sid & Nancy’ and Mike Leigh’s ‘Meantime’
The Breaking Point (1950)
Late summer is all about reflection over at The Criterion Collection, as the library is spending August offering up a handful of unsung classics and new look at some longtime favorites.

Michael Curitz’s “The Breaking Point,” a mostly overlooked Hemingway adaptation, starring John Garfield and Patricia Neal, will be available on Blu-ray for the first time, while Sacha Guitry’s “La poison” arrives on home video for the first time ever. Elsewhere, Mike Leigh’s revelatory “Meantime” is getting a 2K restoration, all the better to enjoy the early work of Tim Roth and Gary Oldman. That’s not all for Oldman fans, however, as Alex Cox’s “Sid & Nancy” hits the collection with a brand new 4K digital restoration. Finally, Walter Matthau stars in the charming comedy “Hopscotch,” also available on Blu-ray in a 2K digital restoration.

Below is the complete list of August additions, with descriptions provided by Criterion.

Watch: UK Trailer for 30th Anniversary Re-Release of 'Sid and Nancy'
"Who the hell do you think you are?!" Hey punk fans, it's time to revisit this cult classic. Described as "the definitive [film] of the punk phenomenon", the punk rock drama Sid and Nancy is getting a re-release this year for its 30th anniversary. The film stars Gary Oldman as Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, who tried to start a solo career after the band broke up in 1978. The film profiles his turbulent and destructive romance with his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, played by Chloe Webb, a heroin-addicted groupie who was found dead months later. The cast includes David Hayman, Andrew Schofield, Xander Berkeley, and Courtney Love in a small role. It's always cool to see great films return to theaters for a restored re-release. Have fun. Here's the new 30th anniversary re-release trailer for Alex Cox's Sid and Nancy, from The Guardian: Morbid biographical story of Sid Vicious (Gary Oldman...

'Boardwalk Empire' star Stephen Graham: My TV Hero
"Where I lived when I grew up, there was a fantastic actor called Andrew Schofield.

"He was in a TV series called Scully. It was actually about a young lad who wanted to play for Liverpool and he had these fantasies and daydreams about it. It was a comedy and it was written by Alan Bleasdale.

"Drew lived across the road from where my nana's house was, so I suppose seeing him as a kid made me realise that me being an actor was tangible, it was attainable.

"I could see that there was this man who was on TV and he was a brilliant actor, he was in great stuff like Boys from the Blackstuff and he was living nearby in my neighbourhood.

"That gave me the faith and the hope and belief that one day maybe I could be an actor. He was my hero as a kid.

Sid and Nancy: an intriguing glimpse into a dysfunctional relationship
As with all portrayals of punk, its authenticity can be, and was, questioned. But with lead performances of this quality it's really all about the relationships, messed up as they were

Sid and Nancy (1986)

Director: Alex Cox

Entertainment grade: B+

History grade: B–

Sid Vicious was the bassist of punk band the Sex Pistols from 1977 to 1978. When his girlfriend Nancy Spungen was murdered in October 1978, he was charged with the crime. He died of a heroin overdose before the case could come to trial.

Casting

Sid Vicious (Gary Oldman) and Johnny Rotten (Andrew Schofield) are vandalising a Rolls-Royce on a London street. Can of paint in hand, Sid kicks in the windscreen to reveal a nonplussed Scottish terrier sitting in the driver's seat. "Go on, Sidney," says Johnny. "Spray the beast." "Nah," replies Sid. "It's a really good dog." What a kind heart. Oldman and Chloe Webb are astonishingly good as Sid and Nancy,...

Waterloo Road's Rochdale set is being transformed into cheap temporary accommodation. The Greater Manchester classrooms, formerly Hilltop Primary School in Kirkholt, will be offered to local people at a cost of £180 per month to deter squatters and vandals, says Pa. The BBC school drama has moved to the Scottish town of Greenock, 25 miles outside Glasgow, for its eighth series. The Rochdale set, which has been Waterloo Road's home for six years, will eventually be demolished. Andrew Schofield, branch manager at Ad Hoc Property Management Ltd, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for people (more)...

Weekend Rental: Alex Cox's Sid and Nancy
  • It's odd that one of the first sequences in (500) Days of Summer (just released yesterday) will haphazardly remind some of the famous When Harry Meet Sally diner sequence and it also happens to contain a Sid & Nancy reference - not the movie, but the maladjusted couple. It acts as a possible foreshadowing of things to come in this rom com and it is one among many references to film history (we find The Graduate, Bergman, French New Wave, Disney and Han Solo). Zooey and Joseph got together with helmer Marc Webb for a piece of viral of self-promotion for 500 Days, which reminds us of a film worth pointing to in our Weekend Rental suggestion. The 1986 film was directed by Alex Cox,lensed by Roger Deakins and featured Gary Oldman in the role of Sid Vicious. See NYTimes review after the jump.      Few would have suspected, when Sid Vicious died
