The Mad Titan Thanos is one of Marvel’s all-time best villains, an evil (but also complex) madman bent on murder and conquest. In various stories, such as The Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos nearly brought all reality to its knees, but in Clobberin’ Time #5, readers learn of a villain, still in the distant future, who will come to rival Thanos.

Clobberin’ Time #5 is written and drawn by Steve Skroce, colored by Bryan Valenza, and lettered by Joe Sabino. Chicago-based Kartemquin Films will receive the North Carolina festival’s Master Of Cinema award.

Kartemquin’s credits include Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters (pictured) and PBS miniseries The New Americans.

Founder and artistic director Gordon Quinn will attend the festival to accept the award alongside executive director Justine Nagan and frequent collaborators Steve James and Peter Gilbert.

Previous Master Of Cinema honourees include Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler of Killer Film, Peter Bogdanovich, Bill Pullman, Pam Grier, Ned Beatty and Cliff Robertson.

Emerging Master Awards will go to Winter’s Bone director Debra Granik and actress Melanie Lynskey. Previous honourees include Jeff Nichols, Paul Schneider, Michael Shannon, Ramin Bahrani and David Gordon Green.

Spark Awards will go to actors Sophie Desmarais, Tye Sheridan and Tyler James Williams. Previous recipients include Anna Margaret Hollyman, Madeleine Martin, Terence Nance, David Oyelowo, Brady Corbet and Amy Seimetz.

Once again, in a perfect blend of Canadian and U.S. experimental film harmony, the cities of Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan are teaming up for the 17th annual Media City. It’s four nights of great experimental videos and films from all over the world that will run on May 24-28.

Special events this year include a retrospective of the work of Dutch filmmaker Jaap Pieters, which opens the fest. Pieters specializes in shooting 3-minute reel Super 8 films of the interesting people and events that pass by his apartment window, which he has been making for three decades.

There will also be a retrospective of the films of William Raban, who has been making experimental documentaries about the changing face of east London over the past 25 years. Plus, artist Silvi Simon will host a discussion of her sculptural film projections, which will be on display at the Art Gallery of Windsor.
