Millennials might be the first to remember The Disney Afternoon, a two-hour block of Disney cartoons that aired on weekdays from 1990-1997. The block ran in four half-hour segments which alternated between multiple animated series. Surprisingly, the line-up was not slated for The Disney Channel only and aired in many markets across the United States. Some of the headlining shows featured characters that Disney fans would have already been familiar with from the studio's catalog of films and shorts, while others presented all-new characters and concepts.
Recognizable shows, like Darkwing Duck, first aired on The Disney Afternoon and featured voice talents like Jim Cummings. A veteran Disney voice actor, Cummings is best known as the current voice of Winnie the Pooh and Tigger -- but his resume extends well beyond Disney. Nostalgia for The Disney Afternoon has encouraged the studio to consider rebooting some of its properties from the block,...

Welcome to the dog days of summer, where you’ll sweat through your clothes mere seconds after stepping outside and you risk a nasty sunburn just from getting your mail.
That said, we’re more interested in the canine part of the equation. After all, what better way to distract you from a bout of heat stroke than by watching the funniest pups in the history of movies?
To determine which hilarious furballs should make our list, we reached out to all manner of dog experts — from veterinarians to dog groomers to the voice of the Taco Bell Dog to the guy who performs Rowlf for the Muppets. Which is to say: We’re confident that we most definitely barked up the right tree.
For the record, though, this list is only movie dogs, so no Eddie from Frasier or Courage the Cowardly Dog, though some of the dogs below...

San Francisco police have arrested a suspect in the April 4 stabbing death of Cash App founder Bob Lee, and say the alleged killer and his victim knew one another.
Nima Momeni, 38, has been booked on one charge of murder, San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott announced at press conference this afternoon. The suspect will be arraigned tomorrow, with officials pledging to seek detention without bail.
Scott said police would not yet provide information confirming their assertion that Momeni and Lee were acquainted.
Local San Francisco news reports and a LinkedIn account indicate that Momeni is the 38-year-old founder of Expand It, a tech support and consulting firm based in Emeryville, California. The company’s website is no longer operational.
Earlier today, San Francisco Board of Supervisors member Matt Dorsey tweeted a message commending the police department’s homicide investigators for “their tireless work to bring Bob Lee’s killer to...

The new animated anthology miniseries "Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi" is now streaming on Disney+, and brings us a new perspective on Count Dooku: a view of him in his earlier years before the corruption of the Sith took him and twisted him into Darth Tyranus.
The man behind Count Dooku's voice, Corey Burton, has been a voice actor for decades, providing voices you hear almost every day. From the tram operator at Disneyland and "Star Wars" characters like Count Dooku and Cad Bane, all the way to Captain Hook, Spike Witwicky and Shockwave from "Transformers," and even James Bond, Jr., Burton has shaped the audio landscape of Saturday morning cartoons and theme parks for decades. We were able to have a wide-ranging conversation with him about the beginnings of his career, his work as Count Dooku, and the legacy of "Star Wars."

The clumsy, vine-swinging George first swung onto screens in cartoon form in 1967 with the series George of the Jungle, created by Jay Ward and Bill Scott – the latter of which also voiced the titular George – as an anthology consisting of three segments: George of the Jungle, Tom Slick, and Super Chicken. Unsurprisingly, the titular character became the most popular and was rebooted in a solo show forty years later in 2007. The character came to life, however, with the 1997 big-screen, live-action adaptation starring Brendan Fraser as the much-loved character. Walt Disney Pictures produced the movie which went on to become a huge success at the box office. Reviews – both at the time of release and retrospectively – have been favorable for the most part, which is relatively unusual for live-action adaptations of cartoons. Movies such as 1994’s The Flintstones, 1999’s Inspector Gadget, and, more recently, 2021’s Tom & Jerry have seen a...

Update: A security guard who was protecting a TV crew before being shot has died.
The guard, a retired police officer, was hired to protect KRON4 reporters at the scene of an armed robbery. He was attacked when one of 12 robbers tried to take the crew’s cameras.
Kevin Nishita was a father of two and grandfather of three. He was shot in the lower abdomen and was rushed to the hospital for surgery, but died Saturday morning.
Earlier: An unnamed security guard and an unidentified Berkeley man were shot in Oakland on Wednesday, as a TV crew for KRON4 was targeted for robbery while filming, the Bay Area news station reports.
Ironically, the crew found itself targeted by armed robbers while reporting on another in a string of smash-and-grab thefts at Oakland clothing store Prime 356. Police say the criminals were after their camera equipment, with shots fired around 12:20 p.

Yet another in a string a smash-and-grab robbery at a Los Angeles-area Nordstrom took place tonight. The store at the Westfield Topanga & The Village shopping center in Canoga Park was hit at about 7 p.m.
A group of at least five men, one wearing an orange wig, entered the store and stole seven or eight purses before fleeing the scene and jumping into a newer model gray Ford Mustang that sped away from the scene, according to reports from ABC7 and KCAL9.

Three suspects are in police custody today after they were arrested in connection with a reported mass smash-and-grab robbery at L.A.’s popular The Grove shopping center. Other suspects remain on the loose. It’s the latest in a string of flash mob-style looting incidents targeting upscale stores in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Police said they believe the suspects were part of a group of at least 20 people who allegedly robbed a Nordstrom store at the popular retail and entertainment complex in the Fairfax District just before 11 p.m. Monday.
The robbers at the Grove used a sledgehammer and assorted tools to smash one of the department store’s windows and reportedly took several items of men’s clothing, police said. At least four cars sped away from Nordstrom’s as LAPD patrol cars responded to the burglary call.

The banned Bullwinkle bumper that had kids ripping off their TV knobs is making the rounds again. Back in the early 1960s, The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show had puppet intros by the lead character, who was played by Bill Scott. These intros and bumpers were often sarcastic and took part in making fun of Walt Disney, who had a show, Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, that aired directly following Bullwinkle and his friends. The resurfaced video features a few digs on Disney, along with the infamous call on kids to remove their TV knobs.
NBC took over on The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show in 1961 from ABC, who previously called the series Rocky and His Friends. The decision to change the name came about when Bullwinkle's popularity soared over his little flying squirrel friend Rocky. Bill Scott's take on Bullwinkle during the intros and bumpers was quite different from what...

Memorabilia from the private collection of late voice actress June Foray will be up for auction beginning at 1 p.m. at Heritage Auctions.
Foray is best known as the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel in the various “Rocky and Bullwinkle” series, Cindy Lou Who in “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and Granny in the “Sylvester & Tweety” cartoons. But she voiced hundreds of other roles beyond those, working late into her life. She died on July 26, 2017, just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday.
In addition to her prolific voice acting career, Foray was also a key figure in the animation industry as a whole.
“June was not only the preeminent voice actress for decades during her astounding 80-plus-year career, she was also a founding member of Asifa-Hollywood and the creative force behind the Annie Awards,” says Asifa-Hollywood executive director Frank Gladstone. “A fearless and influential advocate for animation,...

Based on the characters Mr. Peabody and Sherman from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, DreamWorks Animation’s Mr. Peabody & Sherman tells the story of a boy who’s adopted by the smartest dog in the world. However, much unlike the original 1960s material, this 3D CG-animated version doesn’t just feature the pair exploring the past courtesy of Mr. Peabody’s time travel machine, the Wabac; it also chronicles the evolution of their relationship as father and son. With Mr. Peabody and Sherman making its way into theaters on Friday, March 7th, Collider got the opportunity to sit down with the duo responsible for bringing these characters back to life, Ty Burrell and Max Charles. Catch what Burrell had to say about paying homage to the man responsible for voicing the original Mr. Peabody, Bill Scott, the tricks Charles used to put himself in Sherman’s shoes while in the sparse sound booth,...

Jay Baruchel gives an update on Goon 2, and the plan is to get filming in 2014...
Jay Baruchel is an increasingly in demand man. With his latest film, This Is The End, doing comfortable box office for Sony, he's got the small matter of the RoboCop remake/reboot due next year as well. But beyond that, he's also working on a sequel to the really rather grand Goon.
Goon, you might recall, is an ice hockey comedy featuring incredibly violent moments and Seann William Scott. Often in combination with one another. If you've not seen it, and your stomach doesn't mind the odd tooth flying, it's worth checking out. And Baruchel, chatting to the Lethbridge Herald, has revaled that work is ongoing with the planned Goon 2.
"We're furiously typing away", he said, with he and co-writer Jesse Chabot once more on scripting duties.

It was released almost two months ago, but I finally got around to savoring Criterion's Blu-ray restoration of Hiroshi Inagaki's The Samurai Trilogy over the last couple of weeks. I've made mention of it in a few posts here and there, but i wanted to make a special point to give it it's own space considering the massive upgrade we are talking about here over the previously released 2004 DVD editions. I can't remember how long ago it was that I bought the DVD editions, but I bought them blind without having seen any of the three films -- Musashi Miyamoto (winner of the 1955 Best Foreign Language Oscar), Duel at Ichijoji Temple and Duel at Ganryu Island -- but watching them those years ago I remember enjoying the films, but not at all moved by the imagery. The DVD presentations were hardly impressive and Criterion's packaging doesn't suggest they were remastered in any way.

It has been a bit of a busy movie week for me. I saw The Bourne Legacy, The Campaign and Samsara (in digital 4K at Seattle's Cinerama) in theaters. I watched Side by Side and Baraka, both in HD online. Then I watched the new Jaws and The Raid Blu-rays and also watched Musashi Miyamoto, the first film in Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy on Criterion Blu-ray. The Raid Blu-ray I already commented on and if you haven't joined that discussion, I'd ask you to give it a look. As I'm sure most of you are aware, I already reviewed The Bourne Legacy (my review), The Campaign (my review) and Side by Side (my review) and I will have reviews of the Jaws Blu-ray and Samsara soon. However, I do want to talk briefly about Musashi Miyamoto. I own Criterion's previous DVD release of the Samurai trilogy and this new...

Eddie Kaye Thomas talks about returning as Finch in the comedy sequel American Reunion, debuting on Blu-ray and DVD July 10
Like most of his cast mates, Eddie Kaye Thomas was not a household name before the release of the surprise hit American Pie. He had just a handful of credits to his name, including guest starring stints on Felicity and Law & Order before the breakthrough 1999 comedy, where he portrayed the mother-loving Finch. 13 years later, the actor reprises his role in American Reunion, arriving on Blu-ray and DVD July 10. I recently had the chance to speak with Eddie Kaye Thomas over the phone about reuniting with the cast for once last slice of comedic pie. Here's what he had to say.
This had been rumored to be in development for quite a few years before it actually came together. I was wondering when was the first time you were officially approached to come back as Finch?...

Bullhead The best film for your money this week is the Oscar-nominated Bullhead. It's a film that's hard to prepare you for when I mix the fact it centers on a cattle farmer who gets mixed up with the mafioso in a meat trading business that's anything but on the up-and-up. The film will give you a proper introduction to Matthias Schoenaerts, whom you'll see again in this year's excellent Rust and Bone, preparing you for an international star that is going to play a much bigger part on the worldwide stage soon enough. You can read my full review of the film right here.

Goon, purportedly based on a true story, tells the tale of Doug Glatt (Sean William Scott), a stupid but kindly bouncer who stumbles into minor-league ice hockey due to his ability to give out – and take – a beating; mid-match fighting not only allowed but encouraged in ice hockey. All the hallmarks of a classic sports comedy, laid down in tablets of stone by Will Ferrell, who of course, invented the genre, are present and correct. The plucky underdog side, the feisty love interest, the intimidating rival (embodied here by Liev Schreiber) and the climactic, season defining game that stands between glory and ignominy.

Toshiro Mifune stars as a legendary 17th Century swordsman in The Samurai Trilogy.
The Samurai Trilogy, directed by Hiroshi Inagaki (The Rickshaw Man) and starring the inimitable Toshiro Mifune (Seven Samurai), was one of Japan’s most successful action-adventure film exports of the 1950s.
Based on the rousing, combat-filled novel by Eiji Yoshikawa that’s often called Japan’s Gone with the Wind, the sweeping Samurai Trilogy fictionalizes the life of the legendary seventeenth-century swordsman (and writer and artist) Musashi Miyamoto. Following him on his path from unruly youth to enlightened warrior, the three films—1954’s Oscar-winning Musashi Miyamoto, 1955’s Duel at Ichijoji Temple, and 1956’s Duel at Ganryu Island—come together as a passionate epic that’s equal parts tender love story and bloody action.

Seann William Scott may be best known for his role as the ultimate dude in the American Pie films, but now the star says he's ready to settle down. Seann William Scott, ice hockey, violence, blood and the odd loose tooth. Here's our review of incoming comedy, Goon, likely to be one of 2012's most violence movies...
If 2012 has a more violent film tucked away on its release schedules, then expect a very bloody year of cinema ahead. Goon, starring Seann William Scott, has the appearance of being a raucous, foul-mouthed comedy, and to a degree, that’s what it is.
What it also is, though, is the ultra-violent story of Doug Glatt, aka Doug The Thug, and his ascendance in the world of professional ice hockey, fired by his unmatched ability to punch seven shades out of the nearest player to him. Actually, scrub the unmatched: there’s one other face on the ice hockey circuit that practices such relentless, wince-inducing beatings, and that’s Liev Schreiber’s Ross Rhea, a man in his last season as a pro.

My experiences as a film blogger have taught me many things. That you have to take the good with the bad, for example. That you whilst may never receive any comments on the vast majority of your reviews, any criticism of Michael Bay will result in abuse. And that whilst not a sure thing, the quality of catering at a screening is often directly inverse to the quality of the film. So when I was presented with hotdogs from Bodean’s prior to the press screening of Goon, an alarm bell sounded in my mind.

Though sometimes harrowing and, far too often, a terrible trip down awkward memory lane, one of the few benefits of attending a high school reunion is seeing what has become of your classmates and friends. Well, if you've become super successful, that is. Otherwise, it's an embarrassing drag.
Over a decade removed from the original "American Pie" film, Jim, Stiffler and the gang are getting back together for a ten year high school reunion in Universal's upcoming, cleverly titled flick, "American Reunion." And just as the film will examine what's become of each character in the years since their last film, "American Wedding," we can examine what has become of the stars that play them.
From salaries alone, we can tell that some have had a better few years than others. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actors being paid the most for returning to the franchise are Jason Biggs and Seann William Scott,...

Perhaps Jason Biggs will be teaching his son about the joys of baking.
Hungry for a hit and with a classic property ready in the works, Universal is bringing the original cast from the smash "American Pie" trilogy back for an awkward fourth coming of age experience. The Wrap relays that Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott and Eugene Levy have already signed on to do a fourth "Pie" movie, with deals in the works for Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari and Jennifer Coolidge to come back aboard, as well.
Though THR doesn't mention Alyson Hannigan, she's listed on IMDb as part of the cast.
Chris and Paul Weitz, the brother director duo that helmed the first film, are signed on as executive producers. Chris spoke with Movieweb.com earlier in the month, and gave some details on the in-development movie.
"I know that Universal wants to do it.

Rocky And Bullwinkle Cartoonist Anderson Dies
Cartoonist Alex Anderson, who created beloved U.S. TV characters Rocky And Bullwinkle, has died after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was 90.
Anderson died in Carmel, California on Friday, his wife, Patricia, confirmed to the New York Times.
He was the first cartoonist to draw Rocky the flying squirrel and his buddy, a moose named Bullwinkle, for 1959 ABC network series Rocky and His Friends, created by Jay Ward and Bill Scott. In 1961 the comedy moved to NBC as The Bullwinkle Show. Anderson was not involved in the production of either series.
Before the success of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Anderson worked with Ward to create Crusader Rabbit, which featured his other cartoon creations, including Dudley Do-Right, a Canadian Mountie.
But the pair's collaboration was marred by litigation following Ward's death.
When Anderson saw a documentary about the Rock and Bullwinkle characters in 1991 that failed to credit him, he filed suit against Jay Ward Productions, two years after Ward died.
A settlement was reached in 1996, with a court-mandated acknowledgement of Anderson as “the creator of the first version of the characters". The financial component of the settlement was sealed.
Anderson is survived by his wife, Patricia, four sons, a daughter, 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Despite Jay Baruchel’s best secret-keeping intentions at this years comic-con, writer/producer Evan Goldberg has let slip that Seann William Scott may well star in the forthcoming movie Goon.
The Playlist report that after Baruchel (How To Train Your Dragon) told MTV in the vaguest of terms that a “bona fide American movie star” would appear in his upcoming hockey comedy, Goldberg unambiguously announced that “We’re hoping that Seann William Scott (American Pie) will be in the movie.”
Should William Scott commit to the project, he will have two competing hockey comedy’s vying for audience’s attention. Hit Somebody, Kevin Smith’s upcoming hockey comedy, already has Scott attached to star.
Although no specific release date has officially been announced for Goon, Goldberg has stated that the movie is running full-steam ahead, Goldberg currently co-scripting with Baruchel due to the former’s busy schedule. Michael Dowse (It...

The fan-favorite director discusses the Blu-ray version of his latest comedy Cop Out featuring the all-new "Maximum Comedy Mode."
Director Kevin Smith is not someone who is known for mincing words. The fan-favorite director of such films as Clerks and Chasing Amy has always had a reputation for being honest and outspoken about the movie making process. He hosts a weekly podcast online and is known for participating in hilarious Q&A sessions that are often filmed for DVD release. So it only makes sense that the new "Maximum Comedy Mode" feature on the Blu-ray Combo Pack of his latest film Cop Out, available on July 20th, would be the perfect outlet for the popular director. The new feature allows fans to watch the buddy-cop film along with Smith, who periodically pops up with the movie's co-star Seann William Scott to give commentary, introduce deleted scenes, outtakes and generally just...

Gene Roddenberry spent the 1970s attempting to create new series and while many got as far the pilot film, none ever went to series. By the end of the decade he was frustrated and gave up, tying himself to Star Trek, riding that cash cow to the end of his life.
His first attempt was 1973’s Genesis II, a take on post-apocalyptic life on Earth, starring Alex Cord as Dylan Hunt (a name that got recycled). The CBS movie of the week looked good and almost made the schedule when the network opted instead for Planet of the Apes. Roddenberry continued to rework the notion, revising it into Planet Earth, and switching from CBS and Cord to ABC and then rising action star John Saxon. After that aired and failed, Roddenberry wisely walked away from the idea in favor of Questor and Spectre.

Seann William Scott has apologised for his role in movie Mr Woodcock. The actor said he was surprised by the poor quality of the film, which starred Billy Bob Thornton and Susan Sarandon. Scott is quoted as saying: "Man, that movie was so bad. I managed to watch about 15 minutes of it before I gave up. "Billy Bob Thornton didn't ever watch it. It was really a case of that movie not being what it could have been and I'm sorry." He added: "You know, my friends back in Minnesota are proud of me, (more)...
