‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Editor John Ottman to Direct Antonio Vivaldi Biopic (Exclusive)
Image
Editor, composer, director and producer John Ottman is teaming with film and music industry executive David Franco to develop a dramatic biopic based on the life of world-renowned Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi.

The project, written by Kevin Lund and Tj Scott, has had been long-gestating, beginning 20 years ago when Ron Howard was set to direct. After many unsuccessful attempts, including with members of the famous Italian filmmaking De Laurentiis family in 2008, the project needed a new vision.

In 2018, Franco, the music producer on previous versions, brought the script to Ottman, who he saw as the man “destined to bring Vivaldi to life.” “There’s simply no talent more suited to craft this remarkable story,” he says.

Ottman immediately got to work re-shaping the story with the writers, before the Covid-19 pandemic stalled the project once again. Now, it’s finally back on track. “After all these years, we’ve never been more confident.

What Are the Best Star Trek Discovery Episodes?
Image
With Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 closing out the groundbreaking series, it's a good time to look back on how much it accomplished in the first four. Discovery changed the game for the franchise when it premiered in 2017, effectively launching the current Star Trek resurgence and fully updating its core concepts for the age of streaming. In that sense, it might be the most important effort the franchise has made since Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered in 1987.

Finding the 10 best episodes among the 55 of the first four seasons is more challenging than it sounds. Discovery is built around single-season mega-plots, which is an echo of its original concept as an anthology series. Individual episodes are thus difficult to separate from each other without marring Discovery's unique style of Star Trek storytelling. That said, the show has certainly delivered its share of high points in its first four seasons, and there's...

Eric McCormack Joins ‘Departure’ As Canadian Series Starts Production On Season 3
Eric McCormack
Season three of international thriller drama series Departure, headlined by Archie Panjabi, has begun production in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Toronto. Will & Grace alum Eric McCormack has joined the series, produced by Shaftesbury in association with Corus Entertainment, Starlings Television and Red Arrow Studios International.

Departure, whose existing two seasons are streaming on Peacock, was renewed for a third season by Canadian network Global in May. Peacock picked up Seasons 1 and 2, which also starred the late Christopher Plummer, after screening them so it is too early to say if the streamer will also take in Season 3.

Created by Vincent Shiao, with Jackie May serving as showrunner and Canadian Screen Award winner T.J. Scott as director, Departure centers on the mystery of The Queen of the Narrows ferry, destined for St. John’s Newfoundland, which sinks in record time with many of its 500 passangers on board.

The investigation team, led...

V Wars: Release Date, Trailer, and Photos for Netflix Ian Somerhalder Vampire Series
Kayti Burt Joseph Baxter Nov 19, 2019

V Wars, Netflix's television adaptation of Jonathan Maberry's vampire comic book series, stars Ian Somerhalder.

V Wars is set to immerse its starring actor, Ian Somerhalder, into a familiarly associated scenario, immersed amongst vampires, just as he’d previously done as an immortal for eight seasons of The CW's The Vampire Diaries, which ended in 2017. This time, however, he’ll be on the human side of the struggle.

Netflix set 10 episodes of the hour-long series, V Wars, an on-screen adaptation of Jonathan Maberry's 2012 book about the first Vampire War. The book is the first in a series that feature prose stories about the supernatural struggle. V-Wars: Chronicles of the Vampire Wars has four installments, and is distributed by Idw Publishing, who is also producing the series alongside High Park Entertainment.

The duo of William Laurin and Glenn Davis serve as showrunners for V Wars,...

Gotham, Ep. 2.06, “By Fire”
Gotham, Season 2, Episode 5, “By Fire”

Written by Rebecca Perry Cutter

Directed by Tj Scott

Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox

The Firefly story comes to a close this week in spectacular fashion as Gotham balances some very campy elements with emotional truths that skirt the line enough to work as an overall episode. There are many great, genuinely touching moments, others that are pitch-perfect black comedy, and a few instances of weird kitsch ideas that for the most part work, as they are executed with full-on commitment.

Gotham throughout its run has mixed many genres into its mold and some are more successful than others. This season has been more of a city-set western, with how brutal the villains have been and how Gotham feels almost lawless, even among those wearing the badge. Captain Barnes brings in the ideals of civilization, which is what Gordon began with in season one,...

Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox

Gotham enters a new arc as Theo Galavan begins to implement phase two of his plan to seize control of the City. The first part of his plan was to bestow chaos by unleashing the Maniax and his next move involves making himself appear as a hero to win the hearts and minds of the citizens. The extent of this plan was accomplished with the surprising twist in last week’s “The Last Laugh”, which also disposed of one of the show’s most interesting villains. This turn has reaped rewards for Galavan, as well as created a new shift in the direction of the season.

Galavan’s staged heroism has won him a candidacy for the Mayor’s office which will give passage for the next phase of his evil plan.

As a movie reviewer there’s nothing more difficult than reviewing an average movie. With terrible movies you can spew forth all the bile and hatred you want, with good (or great) movies you can rave over each an every aspect that got you excited. But with an average movie there’s very often little to say beyond “it’s Ok” – and that’s what Tracers is, just Ok.

Down on his luck Cam (Taylor Lautner) is barely scraping by. Drowning in debt and living out of a garage, he is desperately looking for an out. Cam’s prayers are seemingly answered when he meets the beautiful and mysterious Nikki (Marie Avgeropoulos). She...

Gotham, Ep. 1.20, “Under the Knife” finds Barbara in a twisted romance
Gotham, Season 1, Episode 20: ‘Under the Knife’

Written by John Stephens

Directed by Tj Scott

Aired Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox

The search for the serial killer known as The Ogre continues with Gordon on edge, convinced that his loved one, Dr. Leslie Thompkins, may be in imminent danger. This turns out to be a very clever misdirect that brings Barbara back into the main story. The episode’s most interesting development comes when The Ogre realizes the truth and is left to consider whether or not he should kill her. At this point Barbara is so deep in her self loathing that The Ogre actually begins to see her as a romantic candidate instead of a simple victim, which makes this possibly the strangest meet-cute on television. The possibility that Barbara could be another contender for his affections really livens up the Ogre storyline as does the oddly...

Watch Taylor Lautner Do Parkour in Tracers Trailer
Remember that time when Hollywood thought Twilight star Taylor Lautner was going to be the next big movie star? That didn’t quite work out for anyone, did it? But he’s back in an upcoming movie called Tracers, which doesn’t look very promising. It’s described as a parkour action thriller, and this is the synopsis:

“Tracers follows a New York City bicycle messenger, Cam (Lautner) who is the hottest thing on two wheels, but is in debt to an organized crime gang. When he crashes his bike into a sexy stranger, Nikki (Avgeropoulos), Cam is immediately seduced by her and the thrill of the high-stakes world of parkour.”

Even though I enjoy parkour, Lautner just kills the whole thing for me, and it's hard to take seriously. The film was directed by Daniel Benmayor (The Manhunt) and had an army of screenwriters that included Leslie Bohem, Matt Johnson,...

Constantine, Ep. 1.08, “The Saint of Last Resorts” is a dark, atmospheric midseason finale
Constantine, Season 1, Episode 8: “The Saint of Last Resorts”

Written by Carly Wray

Directed by T.J. Scott

Airs Fridays at 10 pm Et on NBC

“The Saint of Last Resorts” breaks the mold of a lot of previous Constantine episodes, which partially set up the character of John Constantine (Matt Ryan) as some kind of cynical, occult superhero instead of the hell-bound bastard and con-man from the Hellblazer comics. Instead of having Constantine initiate the case of the week with Zed’s (Angelica Celaya) scrying, this time he gets a call from his magic tutor, old flame, and member of the Newcastle crew Anne-Marie (Claire van der Boom), who has seen a baby snatched by a supernatural force. Because this is personal, John leaves Zed on her own at the House of Mystery, giving her first solo plotline to show how she has grown as a character, along with revealing a...

Taylor Lautner Becomes a Parkour Master In This Tracers Trailer and Poster
I don't think I'm quite the intended audience for this Tracers trailer.  In a way, it pleasantly remains me of some of those action capers from the 80's that would latch onto emerging sports or fads in search of an identity.  But I'm just probably too old to really invest in Taylor Lautner jumping on and off things for 90 minutes as he battles with the ethical issues inherent in being one of the world's more athletic thieves.  But that doesn't mean you shouldn't watch the trailer!  Chances are you'll be entertained whether or not you end up with a desire to see the movie. Hit the jump for the Tracers trailer and poster.  The film was directed by Daniel Benmayor (The Manhunt) and written by Leslie Bohem, Matt Johnson, Kevin Lund and T.J. Scott.  Marie Avgeropoulos, Rafi Gavron and Adam Rayner also star.  The film currently does not have a U.

Gotham episode 6 review: Spirit Of The Goat
Harvey Bullock is the focus of this week's confident episode of Gotham. Here's Rob's review...

This review contains spoilers.

1.6 Spirit Of The Goat

Holy Ghost on a bicycle, Batman! The oft-criticised Gotham displayed some real confidence this week.

Spirit Of The Goat had jumps between time periods, core characters being left out, development for background cast-members, some stellar direction, and a core mystery that kept us guessing throughout. As we said in our big feature about Gotham over the weekend, those who are continuing to watch the show are most definitely being rewarded as the weeks go on.

One of our favourite facets of this week’s episode was the focus on Donal Logue’s Harvey Bullock. Since week one we’ve been hoping to learn why he acts like such a prat all the time, and if there’s a more genuine, damaged character underneath. This week, in a...

Gotham, Ep. 1.06, “Spirit of the Goat” is Harvey Bullock’s finest hour
Gotham, Season 1, Episode 6: “Spirit of the Goat”

Written by Ben Edlund

Directed by Tj Scott

Airs Mondays at 8pm Et on Fox

Unlike last week’s “Viper”, this week’s Gotham turns in a case of the week that truly amps up the creep factor without going too far outside of the gritty reality that the show has set up. “Spirit of the Goat” presents an antagonist that not only fits well tonally with the series, but is entertaining, with a somewhat supernatural mystery whose answer falls in line with the noir style. One of the episode’s most pleasant surprises is that it places Harvey Bullock in the lead, allowing him some much needed character depth, as well as highlighting his skills as a great detective in his own right. This episode also provides a significant development in the ongoing Major Crimes Unit investigation of Jim Gordon and...

Gotham, Ep. 1.04, “Arkham” lays the groundwork for new inciting development
Gotham Season 1, Episode 4, “Arkham”

Written by Ken Woodruff

Directed by T.J. Scott

Airs Mondays at 8pm Et on Fox

“Arkham” picks up right where we left off last week with Oswald Cobblepot at Jim Gordon’s front door, which had potential for an explosive outcome. Although not as incendiary as one might have thought, “Arkham” does pull all the subplots of the previous episodes together and sheds some light on the significance Arkham will have in this series. Gotham has done very well integrating its case of the week stories with the overarching plot in the past but now it’s brought the war between Carmine Falcone and Sal Maroni to the forefront and this gives viewers a look at the key players and their motives.

In “Arkham”, we learn the history of the Arkham district and why it’s of value to the two crime bosses. The Waynes’ foundation...

Best TV Episodes of 2013, Part Two: April – June
Southland, “Chaos”

Written by Zack Whedon

Directed by Christopher Chulack

Aired April 10th, 2013 on TNT

Forget Hannibal. Forget American Horror Story. Forget “The Rains of Castamere.” You want harrowing? You want soul-crushing blackness with a side of trauma? You want pure, unforgiving narrative nihilism? Try on the penultimate episode of sadly-departed cop drama Southland. Whereas the typical episode hones in on a few plotlines between seven or eight characters, “Chaos” revolves mostly around a single, nightmare-inducing act: the kidnapping of two of our principal characters by a pair of deranged meth-heads. On paper, it sounds like your average “Very Special Episode” of… really, any cop show ever. The “team member(s) get nabbed and have to be rescued by the rest of the team” setup is well-worn territory. “Chaos”, however, is a different beast entirely. Based loosely on a real incident, “Chaos” earns its title honestly, unfolding seemingly without rhyme or reason,...

Orphan Black’s near-perfect first season managed to slip quietly under the radar
Orphan Black, Season 1

Written by John Fawcett and Graeme Manson

Directed by John Fawcett and T.J. Scott

Aired Saturdays at 9 pm (Et) on BBC America

Despite heavy praise from both critics and fans alike, Orphan Black’s near-perfect first season managed to slip quietly under the radar—only successfully generating mainstream buzz a few days before the finale aired. The high-concept sci-fi show’s main premise involves an orphaned young woman, Sarah Manning, who unwittingly stumbles headlong into an illegal human cloning conspiracy after witnessing her doppelganger’s subway suicide and attempting to steal the dead woman’s identity.

Though the show’s premise initially sounds reminiscent of any generic sci-fi set up, Orphan Black’s story is far from ordinary. The tightly-woven and thoroughly well-written plot (thanks, in part, to a modest ten-episode season) is bursting with complex twists, excellent characters, and a believable, fully-realized world. Nothing in Orphan Black...

‘Hemlock Grove’ Red-Band Trailer: Gypsies, Werewolves, and Nazis
Netflix continues its exploration of proprietary content with Hemlock Grove, a mystery-horror series from the mind of splatter director Eli Roth (Inglourious Basterds). When a teenage girl is brutally murdered in the titular town, two unlikely allies band together to find her killer. Their search will uncover a local band of werewolves and secrets long thought buried by the elite of Hemlock Grove.

Though listed as the primary creative force behind Hemlock Grove, Roth will only direct the pilot and executive-produce the rest of the series. Deran Serafian (House M.D.) and T.J. Scott (Spartacus: War of the Damned) will handle directorial duties for the rest of the series. Hemlock Grove stars Famke Janssen (Taken 2), Bill Skarsgård (Anna Karenina), Landon Liboiron (Terra Nova), and Dougray Scott (My Week With Marilyn).

Interview: Blessing Mokgohloa of "Spartacus"
"Apologies, Nasir, but, seriously, can you really resist this sexy pirate grin?"

The body count grew in last week’s penultimate episode of the Starz drama Spartacus: War Of The Damned, but the good news is that our beloved Agron (Dan Feuerriegel) did not perish as we were lead to believe. Instead he came down off the cross (literally) and was reunited with love of his life, Nasir (Pana Hema Taylor).

Since we’ve already hit many emotional highs in these last episodes, creator Steven S. DeKnight is obviously not holding back and, having seen the last episode, I can promise he delivers a series finale worthy of the entire Spartacus franchise.

Part of what made the Nagron story so compelling this season was introduction of the strapping Castus (Blessing Mokgohloa). The sexy pirate made it clear early in the season that he had eyes for Nasir, he and didn...

Christian Antidormi of "Spartacus" Talks Caesar Rape and Taking Down Crixus
Christian Antidormi went to big heights the final Spartacus season as young Tiberius.

Only two episodes left to go for the Starz series Spartacus: War Of The Damned, and if you think the testosterone mix of blood, sex and tears is going to go out quietly, you’re mistaken in a big way.

In the previous episode, we saw our gay brother Agron (Dan Feuerriegel) tragically fall during battle, but it may have been an even bigger shock when Crixus, played by hunky Manu Bennett, died at the sword of young Tiberius, or "Tibby" as fans on this site have taken to calling him.

Will Spartacus (Liam McIntyre) and his remaining crew get their revenge on Tibby, Caesar (Todd Lasance) and Tibby’s father, Cassus (Simon Merrells)? Or will they continue to fall one by one until next week’s series finale?

For a glimpse into where we’ve been...

Spartacus Vengeance – Episode 9: Monsters

Stars: Liam McIntyre, Peter Mensah, Manu Bennett, Viva Bianca, Craig Parker, Katrina Law, Hanna Mangan-Lawrence, Lucy Lawless, Dan Feuerriegel, Nick Tarabay, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Dustin Clare | Written by Brent Fletcher | Directed by Tj Scott

Just one more episode left to go, and a much faster paced episode than I expected it to be. A lot happens this week, with the highlights being: Nasir takes his turn to pretend to be a Thundercat (“Hissssss!”). Seppia goes all emo. The women of the ludus plot against Glaber. Glaber lets it all hang out – male nudity quota now fulfilled. We learn that Ashur really, really wants to be Batiatus. Blonde women are crazy and like kissing other women. Varinius returns learns the power of the word “Hadoken!”. Glaber gets a “bit of red” on him. Glaber and Spartacus are in need of marriage guidance. Ashur and Glaber go all CSI Capua,...

Chris Columbus ("Percy Jackson," "Mrs. Doubtfire") is negotiating to direct the action comedy "The Secret Lives of Road Crews" at Paramount Pictures says Deadline.

The story follows a clandestine group of road crew workers who are the last line of defense against a subterranean alien race. Kevin Lund and T.J. Scott scripted the feature, with Craig Mazin doing a re-write and writers being sought for another re-write.

Chris Columbus to direct The Secret Lives Of Road Crews
Chris Columbus is in talks to direct The Secret Lives of Road Crews, an action comedy script by Kevin Lund and T.J. Scott. Deadline reports that Columbus is close to a deal about "a clandestine group of road crew workers who are the last line of defense against a subterranean alien race." The project was picked up first by DreamWorks for producer Hal Lieberman, and then was brought to Paramount with Adam Goodman. Lieberman is still on for board to produce the project which has been rewritten by Craig Mazin.

Columbus has already quietly been working on the project, despite not officially being attached. The studio is talking to writers to get another pass on the script. Columbus has not had a hit film for a bit, so I hope that he does not screw this up. What are your thoughts?...

Chris Columbus to Direct ‘The Secret Life of Road Crews’?
Chris Columbus
In the past year, Chris Columbus has become attached to a couple different films as producer and possible director (Hello Ghost, Percy Jackson 2 ) and now he's got one more. He's in talks to direct The Secret Lives of Road Crews, which sounds like the title of a drenched-in-irony memoir, but is really a comedic action script by Kevin Lund and T.J. Scott that involves subterranean monsters and the men assembled to combat them. Deadline [1] says the film would be about "a clandestine group of road crew workers who are the last line of defense against a subterranean alien race." So it's sort of a companion piece to Neighborhood Watch? Sounds that way. The script has been kicking around as a spec for a couple years, and ended up at Paramount after the Dreamworks/Paramount split. It's still at the studio, which put Craig Mazin on rewrite duties some time ago.

Chris Columbus in Talks to Direct The Secret Lives Of Road Crews
I guess Adventures in Babysitting, Home Alone, and Mrs. Doubtfire will carry director Chris Columbus forever (the Harry Potter movies don't count; they were successful because they were Harry Potter).  Despite having almost three times as many flops as hits, Columbus continues to get work.  He's attached to direct a remake of the Korean comedy Hello Ghost and now Deadline reports that he's in talks for the action comedy The Secret Lives of Road Crews.  The story is "about a clandestine group of road crew workers who are the last line of defense against a subterranean alien race."  I expect and demand plenty of traffic cone-based humor. Kevin Lund and T.J. Scott wrote the original script, Craig Mazin (The Hangover Part II) did a rewrite and now the script is out again to writers for a new rewrite.  To the writer that gets the gig, remember: that "Stop/Slow" is comedy gold.

Chris Columbus Directing ‘The Secret Lives of Roadcrews’ For Paramount
After the slightly underwhelming box office results for Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Chris Columbus has been spending the past 18 months or so attaching himself to a project here or there. What he actually decides to make next isn’t clear (or, let’s face it, interesting), but a new project has entered the mix, one that seems to have a chance of becoming a reality.

Deadline tells us that the Home Alone director is close to signing with Paramount for The Secret Lives of Roadcrews, which is written by Kevin Lund and T.J. Scott and follows “a clandestine group of road crew workers who are the last line of defense against a subterranean alien race.” A rewrite was done by Hangover Part II co-scribe Craig Mazin, and further work is apparently in store for the script. Former DreamWorks production president Adam Goodman and producer Hal Lieberman are behind the project,...

Forgotten Action Cinema: Tc 2000
When you stop to ponder how many times Billy Blanks gets his ass kicked over the course of T.J. Scott’s dorky science fiction actioner “Tc 2000″, you seriously start to question his status as an action hero. I’m not saying that he has to coast through the entire picture without getting a few scratches on his angular puss, but it would be nice to see him completely overwhelm his decidedly outclassed opponents without getting his posterior handed to him in the process. Of course, if you shortened the action sequences, you’d realize that there’s not much of a story to speak of, no intricate plotting supporting the picture’s countless corridor-centric set pieces. The film’s only saving grace — besides watching Bobbie Phillips obliterate her enemies while wearing a ridiculously cheesy albeit realistically futuristic S&M costume — is the presence of martial arts veteran Bolo Yeung,...

'Hannah Arendt,' 'Vivaldi' get NRW subsidies
Cologne, Germany -- Veteran director Margarethe von Trotta returns to her perennial theme of strong woman with her new project, a biopic of Jewish philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt. Producers Heimatfilm picked up €750,000 ($920,000) in production financing from regional subsidy body Film Board NRW on Tuesday.

Von Trotta co-wrote the script to "Hannah Arendt" with Pam Katz. The film focuses on Arendt's reporting for The New Yorker on the war crimes trial of the Nazi Adolf Eichmann. In it, she coined the phrase "the banality of evil." "Hannah Arendt" will shoot in Israel and in North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany. Von Trotta's last feature, a biopic of the German nun Hildegard von Bingen starring Barbara Sukowa, was a sleeper success in Germany, earning around $4 million at the boxoffice here.

The Film Board Nrw also put up €1.5 million ($1.8 million) towards another biographical feature, Patrica Riggen's "Vivaldi." Jessica Biel and Kevin Zegers are set to star,...
