James McCaffrey in Rescue Me (2004)
James McCaffrey, Rescue Me Star and Voice of Max Payne, Dead at 65
James McCaffrey in Rescue Me (2004)
James McCaffrey, a seasoned veteran of the small screen and the voice of the iconic video game character Max Payne, has died.

He was 65.

According to reports, McCaffrey died Sunday of multiple myeloma cancer.

He was probably most well-known to non-video game players for his work on Rescue Me, where he played Jimmy Keefe.

Keefe was a New York firefighter who lost his life on 9/11.

He appears as a ghost to his cousin, played by Denis Leary, and his character drives some of Leary's richest scenes as Leary's character tries to understand the loss and why he's still alive.

McCaffrey had a series regular role for the first three seasons before switching to a recurring capacity for the final four seasons.

The FX hit also starred John Scurti, Michael Lombardi, Steven Pasquale, and Andrea Roth.

Throughout his career, the actor had countless credits across movies, TV, and video games.

In addition to Rescue Me,...

‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Cast Looks Back on Their Characters’ Evolution
Image
[The following story includes spoilers for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.]

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel may have come to a close on May 26, but the characters at the heart of the Emmy-winning series will stay with the castmembers who played them for much longer than that.

The final season of the show from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino saw the characters at the heart of it accomplish satisfying arcs — from one of the leads going to jail for his ex-wife to two other characters running in between stand-still traffic on New York City’s Upper West Side to support their daughter.

Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) and her father, Abe Weissman (Tony Shalhoub), have perhaps come further than most pairs in the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. They went from not understanding each other and not having much of a relationship in season one to realizing they’re a lot more like the other than either of them realized when the show kicked off.

Michael Zegen on Joel’s Sacrifice for Midge in ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’: “He Did It to Protect Her”
Image
[This story contains major spoilers for episode six of the fifth and final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.]

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season five, episode six, “The Testi-Roastial,” answered a few major questions that have been hanging over the fifth and final season of the Prime Video series since it premiered on April 14.

At the beginning of episode two, “It’s a Man, Man, Man, Man World,” Marvelous Mrs. Maisel teased that Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) and Susie (Alex Borstein) eventually have some sort of falling-out. Over the course of the following two episodes, tensions begin to rise between Susie and Joel (Michael Zegen), who discovers Susie’s involvement with mobsters Frank (Erik Palladino) and Nicky (John Scurti) may have an impact on Midge’s life and career down the line.

Episode six reveals that Joel confronts Susie in her office about her involvement with the mob, finds her books and discovers just how much of Midge’s career Frank and Nicky own: for every $100 Midge makes,...

Allison Janney and Hugh Jackman in Bad Education (2019)
“Bad Education” Is A Masterclass From Hugh Jackman
Allison Janney and Hugh Jackman in Bad Education (2019)
HBO is both a great and slightly regrettable home for Bad Education. When they picked up the movie out of the festival circuit, it was somewhat of a surprise. After all, the flick had gotten some strong awards buzz, especially for star Hugh Jackman. Would they really be going for potential Emmy (and Golden Globe) attention, as opposed to gunning for Oscars? Well, it appears that way, and aside from that unusual quirk, it’s undeniable that they have a quality picture on their hands. This is actually one of the better titles of the year, no matter where you actually see it. The film is a true crime character study, looking at a massive instance of long term fraud in the affluent Long Island city of Roslyn. The school system in the town is among the best in the nation, due in no small part to the work of the Superintendent of the district,...

Trailer for Sundance 2016 Favorite 'As You Are' with Owen Campbell
"Fresh and richly intelligent." A new trailer has arrived online for an indie film titled As You Are, which premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival last year to positive reviews (here's my review). I'm glad to see this is finally being released soon, it's a great film. Owen Campbell stars as a teenager caught in a love triangle between his two friends - played by Charlie Heaton and Amandla Stenberg. The cast includes Mary Stuart Masterson, Scott Cohen and John Scurti. This is best to see without knowing too much going in, because the film reveals the truth as the story plays out. The trailer features the song "Appalachian Moon" written and performed by Kevin Reilly, included on the soundtrack. I recommend giving this a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Miles Joris-Peyrafitte's As You Are, direct from YouTube: Set in the early 1990's, As You Are...

Sundance Film Festival 2016 Midnight and Competition Movie Lineup
The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.

The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

Some of...

Sundance ’16: Antonio Campos, So Yong Kim, Elizabeth Wood & The Daniels Among U.S. Dramatic Competition
In last year’s selection of sixteen U.S. Dramatic Competition offerings, it was Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s Me & Earl & the Dying Girl that landed both U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic and Audience Award: U.S. Dramatic awards, it was Rick Famuyiwa’s Dope who landed the richest deal ($7 million range), it was Patrick Brice’s The Overnight that had the most post festival momentum, it was Marielle Heller’s The Diary of a Teenage Girl that received a longer term accolades (Bel Powley won Best Actress at the Gothams) and it might be Robert Eggers’ The Witch that becomes the cult item we reference back in a decade from now. This year we accurately predicted ten of the sixteen items below. Among the more familiar folk, we have established names such as Antonio Campos (Christine – see pic of Rebecca Hall above) and So Yong Kim (Lovesong). We have second...

Person of Interest Review: The Return of A Former Foe
I'd been wondering when Person of Interest was going to bring back criminal mob boss, Elias.

It's exciting because it reignites the possibility of Reese and Finch's larger enemy. The seeds have certainly been planted for a variety of bad guys - from the elusive Root to Reese's CIA hunters - but Elias set the stage for the bigger recurring problem. Does that mean that the show will delve deeper into Elias' character and his own story arc or will we not get to see him for another few episodes?

As is the case most weeks, the endings have really given that kick that adds to the show's excitement, and seeing Elias with a perfect grin on his face was a fantastic way to conclude the hour. Sure, I wish there was more for him to have actually done in regard to the overall story, but the reunited possibility of...

New 'Amazing Spider-Man' Clip: "No Bag, No Gwen"
Don't Peter Parker/The Amazing Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) make a super cute couple?  I don't think so either.  But, in the first clip released for Marc Webb's Spidey reboot, young Parker will do just about anything he can to reach Gwen in her place other than share the contents of his backpack with a nosy doorman.  You may recognize the doorman.  He previously played my personal favorite, former Rescue Me NYC firefighter Ken Shea (John Scurti) in the recently extinguished FX series.

First Amazing Spider-Man Clip
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
The promotional campaign for The Amazing Spider-Man is now in full swing, what with the massive, multi-country footage screening and all manner of trailers, photos and posters online. Now the first full clip has arrived, and it’s full of everything you might expect from the adventures of Peter Parker. Take a look below.Everything, of course, assuming that by that you expect him to appear in the lanky form of Andrew Garfield being hassled at the door to Gwen Stacey’s building by an officious Noo Yawk doorman (played by John Scurti, who is usually found getting into trouble alongside fellow Amazing Spider-Man actor Denis Leary on TV’s Rescue Me).If you’re hoping for explosions, web-slinging, roaring lizard beasts or the lovely Emma Stone as Gwen, you’re better off checking out the trailer again. Still, it’s a good indication of the humour that will run through the film.

Two And A Half-men Neighbor Enters House
Two And A Half-men Neighbor Enters House

Actress Melanie Lynskey is about to pop in on the cast of House. Let’s hope she uses the front door of the hospital instead of climbing over the balcony as her cooky Two and Half Men character, Rose, so often did. I miss the banter between Charlie and Rose, don’t you?

The Kiwi actress, which is a cute way of saying she’s from New Zealand, broke into cinema with 1994′s controversial picture Heavenly Creatures. She was adorable in Ever After, and just as quirky as ever in films like Sweet Home Alabama and Up In the Air. I’ve also been told she’s my celebrity look alike, but I’m sure you couldn’t care less about that! On to the real news!

For the Fox medical drama, Lynskey will act in an episode scheduled for early next year.

Rescue Me Victim to House Season 8
Rescue Me Victim to House Season 8

FX’s Rescue Me just recently aired its series finale and already one of its actors has found his way to another show. Actor and writer John Scurti, known from Rescue Me as Ken “Lou” Shea, is guest starring on House for an episode that will play in November. Scurti’s character on Rescue Me died in an explosion (the poor guy). If only he had been on House then; he might have been saved! Alas, that’s not the case.

According to TVLine, Scurti may not even be playing the main patient of the week. All we know about the character is that he will meet Dr. House (Hugh Laurie) in the hospital’s free clinic. That doesn’t mean House won’t take notice of something that turns out to be a rare blood disease of some kind, but the chances are...

'Rescue Me' honors 9/11 with timely series finale
Nearly 10 years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and little more than 7 years after its debut, FX's landmark drama "Rescue Me" concluded its run with the Sept. 7 series finale, "Ashes."

The New York firefighter drama, co-conceived by Denis Leary in the aftermath of 9/11, referenced its tragic roots -- but, true to form, it was not excessively sentimental. For those of you who didn't watch, spoilers ahead...

After a brief fake-out, Lou (John Scurti) was revealed to have died during the penultimate episode's fire. Tommy (Leary) does not handle this well. Riddled with guilt and worried about his growing family's future, he resigns from Ladder 62.

This does not last, and he returns to his post.

There aren't any eulogies for Lou or his numbered peers who died on 9/11, but Tommy does, crassly, acknowledge the unique nature of their job when speaking to a group of new recruits.

"This ain't a job," he says.

'Rescue Me' - 'Ashes': Crawling from the wreckage
Denis Leary in Rescue Me (2004)
"Rescue Me" aired its series finale tonight. I offered a review of the series as a whole yesterday, and I have a few specific thoughts about the finale coming up just as soon as I get some red velvet cake mix... "I know who you are, and I know what you are. You need two things to survive: sex, and fire. One's no good without the other." -Sheila I liked the start of "Ashes" quite a bit, with John Scurti getting an effective curtain call as Lou eulogized his fallen comrades in Tommy's dream. And I liked the end, too, with...

'Rescue Me' John Scurti: 'Series finale will shock viewers'
Denis Leary in Rescue Me (2004)
Rescue Me star John Scurti has claimed that the show's final episode will shock viewers. The actor, who plays firefighter Lou, told TV Guide that the FX drama's series finale is "brilliant". Scurti said: "Instead of becoming weepy and having this Kleenex festival, people are going to p*ss in their pants. It's so horribly, horribly wrong, yet so horribly, horribly right for Rescue Me." Scurti also warned fans not to expect a full reconciliation between feuding friends Lou and Tommy (Denis Leary). "They're never going to agree on everything," he said. "There's so much love between (more)...

Lou Sets Tommy Up for Forced Retirement on 'Rescue Me' (Video)
Denis Leary in Rescue Me (2004)

I should probably start now, because it's pretty unlikely that anyone will ever hear these cries, but 'Rescue Me' (Wed., 10Pm Et on FX) really needs to be nominated for a few Emmy Awards. If you don't want to give it one for best series, because all your favorites are still available, then please for the writing, Denis Leary, Maura Tierney and John Scurti this season.

For Scurti, I nominate this episode as the one he should submit for Emmy consideration for Best Supporting Actor. What a subtle and beautiful performance he gives throughout, and it was quite a tumultuous episode for his character, Lou.

Rescue Me's John Scurti on the Final Episodes: "Lou Steps Back Up"
[Warning: The following story contains mild spoilers from Wednesday's episode of Rescue Me. Read at your own risk.]

There are a couple of co-stars John Scurti wishes he'd had fewer scenes with in Rescue Me's final season.

Peter Tolan celebrates the end of Rescue Me by dropping his pants

"I honestly wished we could have given the doughnuts and cupcakes a rest at some point," Scurti tells TVGuide.com. "You pick your battles. I just remember there was a lot of it ... and I didn't think it was that necessary. I hope that people aren't jarred by it."

The prop pastries have been a nearly constant presence during the seventh season as the series explores the continually troubling health of Scurti's character, Lou...

TV Review: Denis Leary Suits Up For Final Season of ‘Rescue Me’
Chicago – It’s hard to believe that we’ve been through six seasons of FX’s beloved “Rescue Me,” a show that never really took off with a very wide audience but has loyal, ardent followers. Being a fan of star Denis Leary for years, I think I can safely say that he’d rather have the small, dedicated following, then one larger but filled with a-holes. Those fans should be satisfied with the start of the final season of one of FX’s most notable shows, even if it does, once again, highlight both the strengths and weakness of a program that was always good but rarely great.

Television Rating: 3.5/5.0

When “Rescue Me” premiered in 2004, it seemed to capture something about the continuing impact of 9/11 that had been missing from dramatic television. Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) was a perfect protagonist for those times when war and the constant threat of another terrorist act loomed.

See that photo? Sadly, it's probably as close as we'll get to our dream of a 'Justified'-meets-'Sons of Anarchy' crossover episode.

But there were plenty of other things to be excited about from last night's FX upfront presentation at the Lucky Strike Lanes in New York, which the network combined with bowling, libations, yummy snacks and an impressive lineup of the FX talent.

Earlier in the day, the network confirmed a third-season pickup for Wednesday-night drama 'Justified,' as well as a third season for animated spy comedy 'Archer.' Casts of both shows were in attendance at the upfront Tuesday night, along with the entire cast of 'Sons of Anarchy,' the male contingent of 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia,' Louis C.K. from 'Louis,' the cast of 'The League' and John Scurti from 'Rescue Me.'...

Rescue Me Goes Out in a Blaze of Glory
True to form, Rescue Me's penultimate episode ended with a shocking cliff-hanger: During a raging casket-warehouse fire, Lou (John Scurti) remained pinned under a mass of shelving and a chunk of the ceiling fell onto a helmet-less Damien (Michael Zegen). So, then: Just how many deaths will the finale hold?

Exec producer Peter Tolan assures us that tragedy is indeed in the offing....

Cheers & Jeers: Rescue Me's Explosive Cliff-hanger

Denis Leary's FX firefighter dramedy ended its penultimate 2010 episode with two men down: Lou (John Scurti, TV's most underrated actor), whose heart problems caused a warehouse fire to worsen, and probie Damien (Michael Zegen, who's come into his own this season). Tommy Gavin's godson, who's run hot and cold on the idea of following in his late father's Fdny bootsteps, literally had the ceiling fall in on him.

The question is: Can either be rescued...

TV Review: ‘Rescue Me’ Struggles to Keep Creative Fires Burning
Chicago – When the first four episodes of the new season of “Rescue Me” allows the actors to merely live in the shoes of these characters they know so well after five seasons on the air then the show finds some of the magic that it produced more consistently in its superior early seasons. Sadly, the writers know they can’t just shoot a drama about guys hanging out in a firehouse and the scripted drama often doesn’t click.

TV Rating: 3.5/5.0

At the end of last season, Teddy (Lenny Clarke) shot Tommy (Denis Leary) and left him bleeding on the bar floor. Creators Peter Tolan and Leary make the very risky choice of opening the new season on the other side of existence with Tommy seeing a vision of Heaven followed by a vision of Hell. The entirety of the first episode of the new season never finds the right...

Rescue Me Actors Share Their Top Moments
The sixth season of Rescue Me will premiere tonight at 10/9c on FX, but the cast has already wrapped filming on this season and next, which will be the last. So no wonder actors John Scurti (Lou) and Adam Ferrara (Needles) are feeling nostalgic.

Scurti compares the chemistry between himself and executive producer/star Denis Leary (Tommy) to some great comedic teams. "I don't know if it's the ghosts of Laurel and Hardy or Ralph and Ed, or Fred and Barney," Scurti tells TV Guide Magazine. "It just kind of works."

Want more scoop? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine!

It's fitting, then, that Scurti's favorite moment from the show is a scene between he and Leary from an earlier season....

'Rescue Me' Season 6 Premiere Preview
Denis Leary in Rescue Me (2004)
Denis Leary-led series Rescue Me is set to kick off its penultimate run tonight, when a terrifying vision of the afterlife shakes its flawed hero Tommy (Leary) to the core, leading him to reconnect with his friends and family back on the outside. The situation is not less optimistic for the other firefighters, with the department cutting costs and putting their future in jeopardy.

'Rescue Me' Final Scene Among Best Final Scenes Ever, Says John Scurti

Says Rescue Me creator Peter Tolan, that it's so close to the end made t easier to plan things plot-wise. "You're much more careful because you're like, this is it. There's not going to be anything after this, so this better be goddamn great," he said.

That pretty much sums it up, right? Promo after the jump:...

'Rescue Me' Final Scene Among Best Final Scenes Ever, Says John Scurti
Denis Leary in Rescue Me (2004)
It's a teaser way, way ahead of schedule, but we'll take it nonetheless.

John Scurti, who plays quirky, philosophical Lou on FX's Rescue Me, let it slip to TV Guide that the firefighter-centric series will end with he and main man Tom (Denis Leary) together. He's probably a little biased, but he thinks the final scene featuring the two of them is "one of the most beautiful things" - so beautiful in fact that it's in the "top five of all series endings."

'Rescue Me' Complete Season 5 New on DVD

Rescue Me just wrapped up filming its series finale last week, several weeks before its penultimate season kicks off on June 29. The final episode is set to air sometime close to 9/11's 10th anniversary next year.

TV Review: Denis Leary Continues to Shine on Consistent ‘Rescue Me’
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – Denis Leary, Peter Tolan, and Evan Reilly were forced to take a lot of time between “Rescue Me” seasons due to the writer’s strike but they’re back with an amazing 22-episode season planned for FX starting tonight, April 7th, 2009 at 9pm Cst. Seamlessly picking up where we left off, “Rescue Me” continues to entertain and maintain its tricky balance between goofy comedy and deadly serious subjects.

Not much has changed for Tommy Gavin (Leary). He’s still dealing with the ghosts of 9/11, still trying to keep his job on the 62 Truck, still battling alcoholism, still barely keeping his fragile relationships with his family together, and still dealing with crazy ex-girlfriends.

The fifth season of “Rescue Me” opens just after the death of Tommy’s father (Charles Durning) at the end of season four. With most of ex-wife issues resolved, his...
