Dr Sales has picked up “Piggy” (“Murk” in Norwegian), a quirky crime comedy from advertising, film and TV production banner The Oslo Company, credited for Netflix’s “Home for Christmas 1 & 2.”

The six-part series set to premiere on the commercial channel TV2 Norway March 17, will be sneak-peeked Feb. 9 at the Scandinavian Drama Series Showcase in Berlin, co-hosted by the Göteborg Film Festival’s TV Drama Vision and the European Film Market.

Headlining “Piggy”’s Norwegian ensemble cast are Ine Jansen (“Mammon”), Trond Espen Seim, Jonis Josef (“Kasko”), John Carew (“Home Ground”), Iben Akerlie (“Norsemen”), and Lars Berge (“Wisting”).

“The Playlist” co-helmer Hallgrim Haug serves as concept director on the series, created by The Oslo Company founder Trond Kvernstrøm. Both shared the writers’ room with Marie Hafting (“Everything You Love”), Tobias Nordbø, Katie Hetland and Kjetil Indregard. The Oslo Company’s Ronny Johansen is producing.

“Varg Veum” is the eponymous title of this Norwegian crime series. The star (Trond Espen Seim) is a former social worker turned private detective due to frustration with the failings of public service agencies. More accurately, he was fired for beating up a drug dealer who was pushing product to kids he was trying to protect. In classic genre style, Varg is a scruffy fellow with a marginal income trying to do some meaningful good for people and the community between times he has to tail cheating spouses to keep his business afloat. The Norwegian series aired from 2007 – 2012 and must have been popular in its homeland, since Seim returned as the same character in about a dozen movie incarnations filmed during and for several years after its run.

A dozen years have gone by since the release of director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch the prequel Here). In the Name of Love is set in 1970s Norway, where a primary school teacher, played by Bonnevie, does everything to keep her husband Lars’ (Trond Espen Seim) highly profitable porn business secret. Lars sees his line of work as an act of social protest, however, and their two sons, played by real-life brothers Jakob and Jonas Oftebro, are caught in the middle – until a family confrontation becomes inevitable.

Nent Group, the Nordic region’s leading streaming company, has ordered “Furia,” an original drama series created by Gjermund Stenberg Eriksen (“Mammon”) exploring the underworld of right-wing extremism in Europe.

A co-production between Norway’s Monster Scripted and Germany’s X Filme Creative Pool Series and Zdf, “Furia” will premiere exclusively across the Nordics on Nent Group’s Viaplay streaming service in 2021.

Repped by Keshet International, the eight-part show is directed by Magnus Martens and Lars Kraume (“The People vs. Fritz Bauer”).

Revenge thriller marks first Norway-Canada co-production in 15 years.

Norwegian revenge thriller The Doll in the Ceiling (Dukken i taket) has begun principal photography in Norway.

The $2m (NOK16.4m) psychodrama marks the feature debut of director Kjersti Steinbø, who also adapted the novel of the same title by Norwegian novelist Ingvar Ambjørsen.

The story centres on a woman who seeks out her deceased sister’s rapist and embeds herself in his idyllic family to destroy his life. It is earmarked for release in autumn 2015.

Producers are Paul Barkin of Toronto’s Alcina Pictures and Kristine Knudsen of new Bergen-based company Den Siste Skilling. Executive producers are Lisa G. Black of Garnet Girl (Us) and Mark Gingras of Vigilante Productions.

It marks the second Norway-Canada treaty co-production, the last being more than 15 years ago.

Norwegian revenge thriller The Doll in the Ceiling (Dukken i taket) has secured Canadian and Us partners, ahead of the start of principal photography on Sept 15 in Norway.

The $2m (NOK16.4m) psychodrama will be made by new Bergen-based company Den Siste Skilling with Canadian producer Paul Barkin of Toronto’s Alcina Pictures and Us executive producer Lisa G Black of Garnet Girl.

In the thriller "The Thing" a group of researchers encounter something not of this world that has the ability to replicate any living being. Dr. Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) joins a Norwegian research team in Antartica led by Edvard Wolner (Trond Espen Seim) who has stumbled across a creature buried in ice. When this simple experiment frees the thing from its frozen prison, Kate must  stop it from killing everyone and anything. She soon discovers that this parasite suddenly mimics anything that it touches therefore putting human against human as it fights to survive. I had the opportunity to sit and speak with "The Thing" director  Matthijs Van Heijningen about the challenges directing his first film, the design of the alien, casting relatively unknown actors, and his personal interpretation of the films ending. Some of the footage in the video shows the creature design. But to me the most spectacular feature is that you can see how the Norwegian base camp is recreated almost identically to the one you saw briefly in the 1982 version. Even the block of ice that the creature escapes from is identical. Another great piece about this footage is that you can see the locale in which they filmed. This wasn't filmed in some studio, this was done in the snow covered mountains in Canada. The look of the 1982 film, with that feeling that the location was devoid of life outside of the camp really added to the creepiness of the overall film, and this one seems to be right on target. Photo: Universal Pictures I don't remember the specifics of the alien spacecraft from John Carpenter's The Thing, but I have to admit I like this new Russian poster from KinoGallery (via ComingSoon) for the film as it isn't determined to sell the alien, but instead offers a more subtle approach to the horror that lies beneath.

I have to also say I am happy to see Universal is not only screening The Thing, but here in Seattle will screen it on a Tuesday rather than a Wednesday, which is a big deal when it comes to daily and weekly newspapers in terms of meeting deadlines. Movie blogger reception to Universal's upcoming prequel The Thing, which hits theaters on October 14, has been a bit cold. This, of course, is first and foremost due to the high regard most people have for John Carpenter's classic 1982 feature, which in itself was a remake of Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby's 1951 film The Thing from Another World. All of this is to say first time feature helmer Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. has a steep hill ahead of him.

This prequel story takes place at an Antarctica research site where an alien spacecraft is found after which a shape-shifting alien terrorizes a team of scientists. With a theatrical release coming in just under a month, Universal Pictures have unveiled a new red-band trailer for their prequel to John Carpenter‘s The Thing. One of the things I admired in their Nycc panel was director Matthijs van Heijningen‘s insistence on using practical effects, but much of that seems to be lost here. Some of the kills here look fun though and I’m interested to see if they can make an engaging story when we already know the outcome.
