This Is What It Was Like to Work As A Writer for Trey Parker and Matt Stone During the First Season of ‘South Park’
Image
South Park may have two creators, but the vast majority of its 300-plus episodes are written and directed by Trey Parker with very little exception. As co-creator Matt Stone put it in the documentary 6 Days to Air: The Making of South Park, “Even though we’re a partnership — and I really do feel that way, that we each bring something different to the table, and that’s what made us survive — the way the stories are expressed is completely through Trey. Trey’s the chef.”

That way of working, however, took a few years for Parker and Stone to figure out. Early on — and particularly during South Park’s first season — Comedy Central set up South Park to operate more like a traditional show with staff writers. Most of those writers, however, would end up getting let go before Season Two.

Still, they did contribute to the ideas and success of that first season,...

"This 1 Insane Lunatic Respects Him": Simpsons Showrunner Reveals His Favorite Homer Episode
Image
The Simpsons showrunner Matt Selman has talked about which Homer Simpson episode ranks as his favorite. Over the course of the show's run, there have been many episodes focused on Homer, and his attempts to follow his dreams, or reclaim a part of his youth, and these are often fun and heartfelt episodes that connect with viewers.

The Simpsons season 36 concluded recently with Homer remaining a core part of the show's ensemble. But there is one Homer episode from The Simpsons season 31, episode 2, that stands out for the showrunner.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Selman discussed the fact that there have been a lot of great episodes throughout the show's run, and that the narratives work best when Homer has something he cares about. He then goes on to discuss an episode from season 31 titled "Go Big or Go Homer," where only one guy at work respects Homer.

Selman discusses...

What Makes a Great Homer Episode? ‘Simpsons’ Showrunner Matt Selman Talks About the New Homer-Centric Disney+ Stream
Image
In March, Disney+ launched a 24/7 streaming channel of The Simpsons, which plays every episode of the show in order, allowing fans to simulate the experience of watching it as it aired on TV. Since then, all 800-ish episodes of The Simpsons have played in a continuous loop.

That, however, just changed.

This morning, instead of playing every single episode, the Disney+ Simpsons stream switched to the 200 best Homer-centric episodes of The Simpsons — called “Homerpalooza” — as determined by online lists made by fans of the show as well as Simpsons showrunner Matt Selman.

Below, I spoke to Selman about how the episodes were chosen and what makes for a truly great Homer episode in the first place.

So, tell me about this new Simpsons stream.

Well, to get the Disney+ Simpsons stream started, we began with just playing every episode in order all the way through. Then, for the update we thought,...

Simpsons Showrunner Explains Why This 1 Character Has Never Been Better
Image
Although The Simpsons has been around a long time, the series showrunner proved the show can remain fresh thanks to its renewed focus on Marge in a recent interview. With over 790 episodes to its name and a theatrical movie spinoff, The Simpsons is the longest-running scripted primetime American TV show in history.

As such, it is hardly shocking that the show is considered tired by some commentators online. In fact, the critical reception of The Simpsons has varied so much over the decades that the phenomenon has an entire Wikipedia page dedicated to it. That being said, The Simpsons season 37 arrives at a high point for the series.

While few commentators would claim The Simpsons has reached the heights of its Golden Age again, the show is enjoying a critical renaissance. As one Vulture article noted, The Simpsons is "Good again" thanks to a renewed focus on character-centric writing since season 33 began.

Reacher Parodies & Mocking Tech Billionaires: Simpsons Showrunner Teases "Super Funny" Season 37
Image
The Simpsons season 37 gets an intriguing tease from showrunner Matt Selman, who previews a Reacher connection. Parodying pop culture is integral to The Simpsons. It's arguably part of the show's fabric, in a sense, considering the iconic image of the titular family gathered around a TV screen. The animated staple recently parodied The White Lotus, a breakout HBO dramedy.

The Simpsons season 37 will keep the trend going with a send-up of Dad TV that's arguably typified by Reacher. Led by Alan Ritchson, who has since become a breakout star, Reacher is one of Prime Video's biggest hits. Based on the novels by Lee Child, the series follows lone wolf Jack Reacher as he inevitably finds himself caught up in a dangerous conspiracy.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Brandon Zachary, Selman revealed that Homer will become obsessed with a Reacher-like show in season 37. In the quote below, the showrunner also...

"I Think 1 Dead Marge Was Enough": The Simpsons Showrunner Reflects On Season 36 Finale Backlash
Image
The Simpsons showrunner and executive producer Matt Selman addresses the backlash connected to Marge's death. In the finale of The Simpsons season 36, "Estanger Things", Margie dies. Partly a tribute to Itchy & Scratchy, and an exploration of what happens to Bart and Lisa after she's gone, the episode doesn't leave a lot of room for Homer.

The episode begins by acknowledging that Bart and Lisa became close thanks to watching Itchy & Scratchy, that gory cartoon from the world of Krusty the Clown, albeit they drifted apart after deciding that the cartoon was no longer cool to watch together. They drift apart and grow up to be wildly different adults, with Marge passing before Homer.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Brandon Zachary, Selman responded to whether the animated series plans to explore the timeline that's introduced in "Estranger Things." Selman noted that the episode is more focused on Bart and Lisa,...

The Simpsons Season 36 Climbs Disney+ Charts After This Shocking Character’s ‘Death’ In Finale Episode

Where Does The Simpsons Season 36 Stand On Disney+ Streaming Charts? ( Photo Credit – Disney Plus )

Marge Simpson lies in a coffin, or rather, she briefly did in the Season 36 finale of The Simpsons. That proved to be enough to pull the show back into the spotlight. What seemed like the end for the blue-haired matriarch turned out to be part of yet another bizarre future fantasy, something fans of the long-running animated series have come to expect. However, that didn’t stop the internet from lighting up and sending the show surging to No. 6 on Disney+ charts as of July 4, 2025, per Flixpatrol.

Season 36 Finale “Estranger Things” Draws Massive Attention

The episode, Estranger Things, followed Marge as she unintentionally broke the bond between Bart and Lisa. Maggie’s simple toy choice led the older siblings to abandon one of their few shared interests: Itchy & Scratchy.

The Simpsons Dominates the Global Streaming Charts Following Marge Simpson's Death
Image
The Simpsonsis climbing to the top of the streaming charts for a controversial reason. After Season 36's surprising death, audiences are flocking to the animated series again.

Per FlixPatrol, The Simpsons has risen to the No. 6 spot on the Disney+ TV series chart for July 2, 2025. The long-running animated sitcom is in the midst of another meteoric rise following the release of its Season 36 finale "Estranger Things," which included the shocking -- but just temporary -- demise of family matriarch Marge Simpson.

The episode focused on the potential fallout of Marge's decision to buy Itchy & Scratchy-themed baby toys for Maggie, which in turn caused Bart and Lisa to give up on their favorite show. This prompted Marge to worry about whether her two older children might drift apart after losing one of their few shared interests.

A vision of the future was shown in which that fear came to fruition before Marge passed away.

Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Dan Castellaneta, and Yeardley Smith in The Simpsons (1989)
No, Marge Simpson is not dead; Simpsons EP blames clickbait headlines for outrage
Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Dan Castellaneta, and Yeardley Smith in The Simpsons (1989)
The Simpsons has a history of killing off beloved characters. Some only had select appearances, like “Bleeding Gums” Murphy. Others were staples, as with Edna Krabappel. There were even surprise fan favorites like Moe’s barfly Larry, whose death last season sparked outrage from die-hard Simpsons aficionados. And now Marge Simpson — only, she’s not actually dead, despite the suggestion that people read into in the season 36 finale which aired last month.

But let’s recap first. In “Estranger Things” — which wrapped up an already unorthodox season that pretended to lead off with a series finale — we get one of the show’s many jumps into the future. It’s there that we learn that Marge Simpson is in heaven, watching down on Bart and Lisa as they mend their relationship. Fans were so shocked and angered by the sheer thought of the death of Simpsons matriarch Marge that those...

The Simpsons EP Sets the Record Straight After Marge's Death in Season 36 Finale Sparks Fan Backlash
Image
The Simpsons caused a stir with fans with the events of the Season 36 finale. Set in the future, the series imagined that Marge Simpson died, and there had been a lot of fans expressing how upset this made them feel with posts on social media. Fortunately for these fans, Marge's death was merely a one-off story for that particular episode and shouldn't be treated as "canon" by fans.

Per Variety, executive produder Matt Selman set the record straight on Marge's death in the Season 36 finale. He stressed that after almost 800 episodes, "there is no canon" with the series, as "The Simpsons doesn't even have canon!"

“Obviously since the The Simpsons future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they’re all different every time,” Selman continued. “Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago.”

‘The Simpsons’ Producer Reacts to Exaggerated Reports of Marge’s Death

Ignore the hysteria about Marge Simpson’s death in The Simpsons’ Season 36 finale, “Estranger Things.” The Julie Kavner character passed away in that episode’s storyline, but executive producer Matt Selman said the death isn’t canon. “There is no canon,” Selman explained in a new Variety interview. “The Simpsons doesn’t even have canon!” In “Estranger Things,” Bart and Lisa become estranged and only reclaim their sibling bond years in the future, after Margie dies. Unlike Marge’s epitaph, though, her demise is hardly set in stone. “Obviously, since The Simpsons’ future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they’re all different every time,” Selman said. “Marge will probably never be dead ever again. 'The Simpsons' Producer Clarifies Fate of Marge Simpson After Shocking Season 36 Finale
Image
One of The Simpsons‘ producers is clearing the air on whether or not they just killed off Marge Simpson.

Matt Selman, executive producer of the animated series, has spoken out after the season 36 finale featured the death of the family’s matriarch. Despite the shocking episode, Matt has clarified that Marge is alive and well.

Keep reading to find out more…

Matt spoke to Variety about the season 36 finale of the series and explained what Marge’s death in the episode really means for the future of The Simpsons.

According to the producer, the finale episode was a fantasy of the future when Marge does die and that in the present day, the Simpson family mom is still alive. He told Variety, “Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago.”

Marge lives! Here are 3 other ‘Simpsons’ characters that returned from the grave — and 3 who stayed dead

You can't keep a good Simpsons matriarch down... or up in heaven for that matter.

The Simpsons recently ended its 36th season on Fox with a flash-forward episode revealing that Marge Simpson (voiced by Julie Kavner) has gone to her great reward — in this case an afterlife where she's married to Ringo Starr. Far from being thrilled for her eternal soul, fans freaked out about Marge's future fate. And their fury forced executive producer, Matt Selman, to go on the record reminding everyone that death is an elastic concept in the show's animated universe.

"The Simpsons doesn’t even have canon," Selman told Variety on Thursday. "Since the The Simpsons future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they’re all different every time. Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago."

A Simpsons Producer Confirmed Whether Marge Is Dead After That Season 36 Finale
Image
It's been true the past few years, and it is still true today: "The Simpsons" is still good, people! Even 36 seasons in, the cultural phenomenon has proven to be the one truly reliable American institution left, a staple of television, a titan of pop culture, one of the most influential animated shows of all time.

In season 36 we saw great episodes featuring pairings we don't see that often anymore, like an episode where Homer and his dad create a sport, or one where Bart and his grandpa bond over baseball, and an episode that parodied "The White Lotus" (and killed a character we hadn't seen in decades). And yet, the best two episodes of the season were all about Marge Simpson (Julie Kavner). The first one is titled "P.S. I Hate You" and deals with Marge's need to be liked and the chaos that ensues when her secret hate...

Marge Simpson Shock Death Gets Official Response Following Online Backlash
Image
Following the massive backlash from fans after The Simpsons season 36 finale's shocking death of Marge Simpson, executive producer Matt Selman has given an official response. Marge's death in The Simpsons season 36 finale was not the first death of a major character on The Simpsons, but it might be the most unexpected, and she's certainly the most significant character to meet her end.

That end, as it turns out, has incensed longtime audiences, who took to social media to voice their ire about the long-running series killing her off. Speaking to Variety, Selman reminded outraged viewers that The Simpsons has retconned deaths before and that "there is no canon," meaning Marge's death is not set in stone:

Marge Simpson Is Very Much Alive, ‘The Simpsons’ EP Says After Finale Sparked Online Outrage: ‘There Is No Canon!’

You can put down the pitchforks and save the strongly-worded letters: Marge Simpson is not going anywhere. That’s the official word from “The Simpsons” executive producer Matt Selman, who confirms that what happened in the recent season finale of the series is not canon. That’s because, after 790 episodes, “there is no canon,” he told Variety. “‘The Simpsons’ doesn’t even have canon!”

The Simpsons Will Spoof The Godfather II to Explore One Character's Dark Backstory
Image
The Simpsons has been airing new episodes since 1989, but there are still some longtime characters on the animated series who still have secrets not yet known by the fans. One upcoming episode will help viewers learn more about a certain sleazy politician, revealing how he also has some dark secrets from his past in addition to his ongoing womanizing.

Series showrunner Matt Selman recently discussed the episode during an interview on the podcast That Shelf (via ComicBook). He shared that more will be explored from the past of Mayor Joe Quimby, someone who's never been known for his moral integrity, but it could be worse than fans expected. Selman teased that the new episode would spoof The Godfather Part II while diving into Quimby's past, and it involves a death by sandwich.

The Pop-Culture Joke Too ‘Silly’ to Put on ‘The Simpsons’
Image
It’s hard to imagine The Simpsons without its nonstop references to popular movies and TV shows, from playful nods to classics like The Wizard of Oz and Raiders of the Lost Ark to more obscure shout-outs to experimental Canadian biopics.

And even after nearly four decades on the air, the show is still mining pop-culture for new ideas; the most recent season of the show featured parodies of ‘80s neo-noir Body Heat and Martin Scorsese’s After Hours. Not to mention a riff on The White Lotus that inadvertently predicted a scene in the HBO series’ third season.

But some references were just too ridiculous to make it onto the show. Current showrunner Matt Selman recently guested on That Shelf’s Springfield Googolplex podcast, and revealed that, despite the lack of a “monoculture” these days, the show is still very interested in referencing movies and TV shows. “I try to encourage the writers,...

‘The Simpsons’ Will Reveal An Iconic Character’s Dark Backstory Next Season
Image
The Simpsons has delved into a number of characters’ backstories over the years, many of which were surprisingly upsetting. Like how the “Crazy Cat Lady” turned out to be a graduate of both Harvard Medical School and Yale Law and whose life was ruined by alcoholism and a severe feline dependency.

And while you might think that, after 36 seasons, the show has no more dark character secrets to expose, well, apparently that’s not the case. Simpsons showrunner Matt Selman recently sat for an interview with That Shelf and told the hosts that, even though parodies of The Godfather are “overdone,” the show is going back to that well yet again.

“The Godfather tropes are so cliché,” Selman explained. “Having said that, we have a giant Godfather II episode coming up that is a back and forth, present and past (story) about the Quimby family saga.”

‘The Simpsons’ Announces Fewer Episodes, Bigger Streaming Perks: All the Details
Image
The Simpsons remain the first family of animation, but we’ll be seeing a little less of them in the coming years. As the long-running animated staple eventually approaches its 40th season, The Simpsons will feature fewer episodes per season. Showrunner and executive producer Matt Selman has confirmed that moving forward, the residents of Springfield will appear in just 17 episodes per year, down from the usual 22, as part of the show’s latest four-season order. “We used to do 22 a year. For the next four [seasons], we’re doing 17 a year,” Selman told Variety. “Fifteen that will premiere in America on Fox, and then two exclusives on Disney+. It’s still a full-time job.” In addition to exclusive bonus episodes available only on Disney+, the streaming platform also features extended versions of previously edited episodes. “Work has a way of expanding to fill the time available,” said creator Matt Groening. “But...

Matt Groening Explains Why ‘The Simpsons’ Is Slashing Five Episodes From Future Seasons
Image
Starting with Season 37 of The Simpsons, Fox viewers will only see 15 episodes of their favorite long-running animated series while The Mouse gets two streaming-exclusive episodes on Disney+. Next thing you know, they’re going to introduce a talking dog.

As the entire TV industry continues to tighten its belt in response to the unceremonious end of the streaming boom, even the tentpole franchises of television aren’t immune to austerity measures, as, over the next four seasons, The Simpsons will premiere five fewer episodes per year on streaming and on cable. While Season 36 featured 18 episodes on the show’s long-time home at Fox and four Disney+ exclusive specials, Season 37 will cut two entries from each platform. But The Simpsons’ creator and showrunner swear that, when it comes to quality, less can be more.

In a recent interview with Variety, Simpsons creator Matt Groening and showrunner Matt Selman revealed the move to 17 total episodes per season,...

'The Simpsons' Creator Explains Why the Sequel Never Happened

Fans of The Simpsons, and more specifically, of 2007's The Simpsons Movie, there's some bad news for you. Per a report by Screen Daily, Groening was present at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival with The Simpsons Movie director David Silverman, and series writer and showrunner Matt Selman. The trio presented a preview of the animated series' upcoming 37th season. Additionally, they each offered their own opinion on the possibility of a sequel based on the popular series. Parental Bans Were the ‘Best Thing’ That Ever Happened to ‘The Simpsons,’ According to Matt Groening
Image
These days, The Simpsons is considered a staple of modern pop culture, beloved by both children and adults. But there was once a time when the cartoon family were considered hugely controversial — keep in mind, this was long before they started hanging out with Minnie Mouse and Winnie the Pooh.

Not long after The Simpsons first began in 1989, the show was blasted by First Lady Barbara Bush and President George H.W. Bush, who famously proclaimed in a speech that Americans should be “a lot more like the Waltons and a lot less like the Simpsons.” And if the Bushes hated the early seasons of the show, they must have really hated it when they became literal villains in Season Seven.

Then there was the widespread hysteria over Bart Simpson-branded T-shirts, which were banned in multiple schools and pulled from the shelves of JCPenney stores, despite the fact that they...

‘The Fans Are More Intense Than Ever’: Matt Groening, David Silverman and Matt Selman on ‘The Simpsons’ Enduring Appeal

Nearly four decades after a spiky-haired boy first declared, “Don’t have a cow, man,” “The Simpsons” remains one of television’s best-loved and influential institutions. At this year’s Annecy Animation Festival, the series’ incredible run, which will extend beyond 40 seasons after a recent re-order, was celebrated with some of its key figures in attendance.

There’s Never Been A Sequel to the ‘Simpsons Movie’ Because the First One Was Too Stressful
Image
Most people not named “Stephen King” seemed to enjoy The Simpsons Movie, which finally brought America’s favorite cartoon family to the big screen — and also launched a war amongst America’s many Springfields.

Although it didn’t win nine Academy Awards and inspire a novelization by Norman Mailer, as the Itchy & Scratchy movie did, when it hit theaters in 2007, The Simpsons Movie was unquestionably a financial success. As Entertainment Weekly reported at the time, on its opening weekend, it “scored the best opening ever for a non-cg animated movie.” The film went on to make more than $536 million at the worldwide box office.

‘BoJack Horseman’ Creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg On His Netflix Series ‘Long Story Short’ And Why Networks & Studios “Should Be A Little More Courageous”
Image
BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg wishes the networks and studios would be “a little more courageous” on adult animation.

Noting today’s “industry contraction,” Bob-Waksberg said decisions by the gatekeepers are “being made out of fear” in the current landscape, which he “empathizes” with.

“I feel like there are a lot of artists and writers who want to do exciting things and kind of push the edges of what adult animation can be,” he told Deadline at Annecy. “I think it’s hard. You’d always rather take a safe bet than a riskier bet, but I feel there is more room in adult animation to be telling more stories than we currently are.”

Bob-Waksberg, whose 10-year-old Netflix hit BoJack Horseman redefined adult animation, noted that the contraction has hit genres across the board, leading to risk-aversion everywhere.

He was speaking a day after Adventure Time showrunner Adam Muto said “idiosyncratic voices” are getting lost,...

The Annecy Film Festival’s tribute to the legendary Matt Groening and the creators of The Simpsons played like an episode of the iconic animated series: Funny, joyous and heartfelt, with lots of silliness and at least one unexpected fart joke.

Groening was named an “icon of animation,” and presented with an honorary Cristal award for his lifetime contribution to the form.

“40 years ago, Matt Groening dropped a bomb on animation,” said Annecy artistic director Michael Jean, referring to the launch of The Simpsons back in 1987 — first as a series of shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, later as the long-running primetime series on Fox. “And since then, he has continued to work at the cutting edge of animation.”‘

In tribute, Annecy screened a few Frenchified shorts of Groening’s work, including a Simpsons intro with an accordion-playing Lisa and a snail-slurping Homer and a Tin-Tin-inspired spin on Futurama. They...

“Je Suis Milhouse”: Matt Groening Gets Emotional At Annecy As He Reveals The Motivation Behind The 800-Episode Longevity Of ‘The Simpsons’
Image
Matt Groening, arguably the greatest TV animator of all time, grew visibly emotional receiving the Honorary Cristal Award at today’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which he labeled the “best festival in the world, animation or otherwise.”

Receiving the gong in front of a packed house, he paid tribute to the “gods and goddesses” in the audience, who “fill the universe with crazy characters who do what you tell them to do.”

“You can have them be brave but isn’t it more fun to have Homer fall off a cliff?,” he said. “We torment our characters and have fun with them.”

Groening was emotional as he thanked his family and reminded the audience that the main characters in The Simpsons are famously named after his father and mother, Homer and Marge, his sisters, Lisa and Maggie, and his grandfather, Abe.

Is Bart named after Groening? “I’ll let you into a little secret…...

The Simpsons Showrunner Addresses if Main Voice Cast Members Are 'Replaceable'
Image
As The Simpsonshas been on the air since the 1980s, the Matt Groening-created show's starring cast members have has their voices become synonymous with their characters. However, as there have been some characters getting recast on the show, some fans might be wondering if that might happen with one of the show's main cast members.

The Simpsons has now managed to get through Season 36 with the same voice cast members voicing the family from the very start: Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Julie Kavner (Marge), Nancy Cartwright (Bart), and Yeardley Smith (Lisa). The same can be said for the show's other main cast members, each of whom voices a slew of beloved side characters: Harry Shearer and Hank Azaria.

In a new interview Cracked, showrunner Matt Selman was asked about the possibility of the show's main characters continuing on past their current actors voicing them. He admitted that it would be...

Don’t Worry, ‘The Simpsons’ Isn’t Done with Itchy & Scratchy, Says the Writer of Last Night’s Season Finale
Image
Last night, The Simpsons delivered an episode, “Estranger Things,” that tugged at viewers’ heartstrings with the unlikeliest of characters: the violent, psychopathic cat-and-mouse act known as Itchy & Scratchy. While the murderous duo are hardly equipped to bring emotional depth on their own, they’re at the center of one of the sweetest, most enduring images in the show — that of Bart and Lisa together in front of the TV, laughing hysterically at their violent antics.

Given how different Bart and Lisa are, they often find themselves on opposite sides of many situations, yet watching The Itchy & Scratchy Show is something they’ve always come together for. It’s also a chance, particularly for Lisa, for them to just be carefree kids. Which is why, when Bart and Lisa decided they were too old for Itchy & Scratchy in last night’s episode, it was downright emotional.

Insightfully, the episode framed Itchy...

Where ‘The Simpsons’ Goes From Here, According to Showrunner Matt Selman
Image
After beginning the season with a fake-out series finale and adding Disney+ exclusive episodes along the way, The Simpsons concludes its 36th season this Sunday on Fox with plenty of gas still left in the tank. After all, it was just weeks ago that a four-season renewal for the show was announced, which would bring the series to a nice, round 40 seasons. Could that landmark number be the point at which Springfield shuts its doors for good? Or are the Simpsons now legacy characters destined to run forever like their owner Mickey Mouse?

And, if The Simpsons does continue on, what of its cast? This past season, Pamela Hayden, the voice of Milhouse and other beloved characters, retired, making her the first original cast member to do so. Others wonder if, by the time Season 40 rolls around and there are 800 plus episodes in existence, there will be anything left for the show to say?...

‘The Simpsons’ Tried to Make A Joke About Every Single Major League Baseball Team in This Week’s Episode
Image
Despite having once illustrated that Major League Baseball is virtually unwatchable without the mind-numbing effects of alcohol…

…The Simpsons has devoted several episodes to the sport over the years. Most famously, there was “Homer at the Bat,” which guest starred several prominent baseball players as Mr. Burns’ softball ringers. As a testament to the show’s popularity, some of these baseball legends have even found that this one ‘90s cartoon has overshadowed their athletic careers.

Then there was “MoneyBart,” in which Lisa coaches Bart’s Little League team. Although the baseball storyline was seemingly overshadowed by Banksy’s controversial couch gag at the start of the episode.

This Sunday, The Simpsons will once again explore America’s pastime with “Abe League of Their Moe.” The episode finds Moe luring a Macedonian baseball megastar to the Springfield Isotopes with a “hype video.” Surprisingly, the Isotopes win out, all thanks to Moe who,...

Why The Simpsons Fired Its Lead Composer Of 27 Seasons
Image
Starting in 1990 and continuing until 2017, Alf Clausen composed the score for the hit animated sitcom "The Simpsons." A lot of the incidental music on the show was extrapolated from the theme song composed by Danny Elfman, but Clausen also had to write the many songs that appeared on the series, forcing him to work in pretty much every genre. Clausen also composed music for TV shows like "The Critic," "Alf," and "Moonlighting." A veteran of the industry, his compositions have been compiled on several "Simpsons" song and music albums.

Clausen worked on "The Simpsons" for 27 years before being abruptly fired by the show's higher-ups in 2017. He was replaced by a music firm called Bleeding Fingers Music, a collective co-founded by Hans Zimmer (who composed the 2007 box office hit that was "The Simpsons Movie") and one that employs a whole team of talented music writers. Clausen was incensed by his firing,...

James L. Brooks Is Back With a New Film and Already Has Notes on His Next One
Image
It’s Sunday in New Orleans, and James L. Brooks has manners on the mind. The 84-year-old, who has maxed out his multihyphenate talents over the course of a legendary career that’s still firing on all cylinders six decades later, is in the Big Easy for reshoots on Ella McCay, the 20th Century Studios comedy that marks his return to the director’s chair after 15 years, and he’s thinking about how people respond to him in public.

“The thing about New Orleans is that when you make eye contact with somebody, that person is going to smile at you and say something pleasant,” he says with a grin of his own over Zoom. “That’s how the manners are here, and it’s amazing to be around. I’m going to try and make that happen in Los Angeles when I go home. I’ll let you know how the experiment works out.

The renewals encompass the 16th through 19th Seasons of Bob’s Burgers, the 24th through 27th Seasons of Family Guy, and the record-setting 37th through 40th Seasons of The Simpsons, extending its standing as the longest-running scripted primetime series in television history.

Fox Gives Huge Four-Season Pickups to ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘Family Guy’ and ‘Bob’s Burgers’
Image
Fox is locking in its animated cornerstones for the remainder of the 2020s.

In a huge commitment to longer-running shows The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers, the network has ordered four more seasons of each show. Additionally, Fox officially announced that American Dad! will return to the network in 2025-26, also with a four-season order.

The renewals will take all four series through the 2028-29 season. The Simpsons will extend its already ludicrous run through its 40th season and, depending on the episode count for the coming seasons, will likely approach 900 episodes by the end of the order. Family Guy will run through its 27th season and Bob’s Burgers through its 19th. The order for American Dad! will encompass seasons 20 through 23, by Fox’s count.

All four shows come from 20th Television Animation.

‘The Simpsons,’ ‘Family Guy,’ ‘Bob’s Burgers’ Renewed for Four More Seasons, ‘American Dad’ Officially Returning to Fox
Image
“The Simpsons,” “Family Guy,” and “Bob’s Burgers” have locked in massive four-season renewals at Fox, Variety has learned. In addition, “American Dad” is officially returning to Fox, likewise with a four-season renewal.

It was previously reported in March that “American Dad” was nearing a deal to return to Fox, the network that originally launched the show in 2005. It has been airing on TBS since 2014. Linear reruns of “American Dad!” will continue to air on TBS and fellow Warner Bros. Discovery networks Adult Swim and TruTV until at least 2030.

“This new deal celebrates the eternal popularity of these iconic comedies, as well as the enduring, prolific relationship we continue to enjoy with our friends at 20th Television Animation and the brilliant creators – that goes double for Seth this time around — and incredible voices behind these contemporary classics,” said Michael Thorn, president of Fox Television Network.

The Simpsons Is Getting Its Own 24/7 Streaming Channel On Disney+
Image
Streaming isn't exactly like old school TV, but Disney+ is doing its part to help bridge the gap between the two ideas. As of today, Disney's flagship streaming service has added a new 24/7 stream of "The Simpsons." This always-on streaming channel includes a whopping 767 episodes across all 35 seasons of the show, which will air in chronological order at launch. That equates to roughly 300 continuous hours. Buckle up.

"The Simpsons" has produced some of the greatest episodes of TV of all time dating back to its debut in the late '80s. But many of us discovered the show on TV -- more specifically, while it was airing in reruns on syndication. So while the show has long been available to stream in its entirety, this is a way to just lean back, hit play, and let some shenanigans with the Simpson family hit you in the face. ‘The Simpsons’ 24-7 Stream of All 35 Seasons Launches on Disney+
Image
On Tuesday, Disney+ embiggened its Simpsons quotient with the launch of a 24 hour, seven days a week dedicated stream of all 35 completed seasons of the iconic animated series. (The 36th season is currently airing.)

The always-on stream of TV’s longest-running animated hit is a dream come true for millions of fans of the beloved show, which has been broadcast into homes nationwide on Sunday nights since it premiered in 1991. The sharp-witted and dry humor of the series has helped weave the show’s humor and sensibility into the fabric of American culture, as the series gained second and third lives with nearly constant cable TV reruns airing across several networks for years. Beginning in 2020, every episode of the Fox hit becoming available to stream on the Disney+ platform.

Now, fans and first-time viewers won’t even have to select an episode, as all 767 episodes across 35 seasons of The Simpsons...
