Everyone dreams about living in a Toys “R” Us. You could sleep on a pile of stuffed animals, eat your three square meals in the candy aisle, stage epic action figure battles, and build Lego sets until the tips of your fingers crack from pushing plastic bricks together. However, what if you were living in a Toys “R” Us because you were hiding from the cops? That doesn’t sound like nearly as much fun. Or does it? In the new poster for Roofman, Channing Tatum lets his inner child out to play while avoiding the fuzz.

Channing Tatum is about to take on one of his wildest roles yet. In the upcoming movie Roofman, he plays Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger who escapes prison and ends up secretly living in a Toys “R” Us store.
The twist? He’s also robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting through their roofs. The first trailer shows that while he might be a criminal, he’s not your usual bad guy. For instance, when he traps the workers in a freezer, he politely makes sure they have their coats so they don’t freeze.
Directed by Derek Cianfrance, the filmmaker behind Blue Valentine, Roofman is inspired by a real story. Yes, this actually happened. Manchester really did break into fast food joints through the roofs and even managed to hide inside a closed-down Toys “R” Us for months without anyone noticing.

Channing Tatum is going where he has never gone before on-screen: The actor/producer collaborates with legendary indie director Derek Cianfrance for crime drama “Roofman,” based on real-life felon Jeffrey Manchester. The film centers on Tatum’s depiction of Jeff, who was known for living in a Toys ’R’ Us store after escaping from prison. He sustained himself by breaking into more than 60 McDonald’s over the course of his crime career.
The first look at “Roofman” states that the film is “based on a true story *as told by a liar.” The film takes place over the course of six months in 2004, during which Jeff lived under the alias “John Zorn” in a North Carolina community. Kirsten Dunst portrays Leigh Wainscott, the divorced mom who works at Toys ’R’ Us and falls for Tatum’s character. After joining the MCU, creating a film production empire, and closing out his iconic tenure as “Magic Mike,” Channing Tatum is making yet another career pivot: leading legendary indie director Derek Cianfrance’s latest feature, “Roofman.”
Tatum stars as the titular vigilante who lived in a Toys ’R’ Us store and broke into more than 60 McDonald’s, emptying cash registers after herding staffs into freezers. The Roofman robber became an urban myth, and now it’s Tatum’s turn to bring his story to the screen. Tatum onstage at CinemaCon teased the footage and called him the “unusually polite” robber and said Cianfrance’s film is “equal parts devastatingly emotional but also hilarious.”
The trailer that was shown at CinemaCon described the film as “based on a true story *as told by a liar.” Tatum’s character explains that after escaping from prison, running as far away as possible doesn’t work.

Channing Tatum took the CinemaCon stage on Thursday to introduce “Roofman.”
In his speech, Tatum mentioned Jeffrey Manchester, who infamously robbed 60 McDonald’s locations. The clip he shared starts on the roof of a McDonald’s as Tatum as Manchester attempts a robbery inside. Post-robbery, we see Manchester as a family man at a birthday party before the police arrive to arrest him and he gets sent to prison.
“The trick is stop, hide,” Manchester says as he enters a Toys”R”Us. “Find a place nobody will look.”
Paramount will release “Roofman,” the upcoming film from “The Place Beyond the Pines” director Derek Cianfrance, on Oct. 3 as part of a first-look deal with Miramax, which acquired the film for distribution in the U.S. and other specific territories.

Perennial favorite in American indie cinema, we’ll definitely be getting some Derek Cianfrance cinema in 2025 as production began this week on Roofman. Deadline reports that Kirsten Dunst will play the person who is admired from afar (or from above) in the true-life story of Jeffrey Manchester – who spent months living undetected in a makeshift hideout inside a Toys “R” Us store, where he would sleep and plan further crimes. Channing Tatum takes on the lead role. Cianfrance wrote the project with Kirt Gunn (who has a producer credit in Sound of Metal). Well into the new dark crime comedy Greedy People, I had to check IMDb to make sure this wasn’t some movie one or both of the Coen brothers had actually made and somehow I didn’t realize before diving in. Nope, it was Potsy Ponciroli who directed, and Mike Vukadinovich who wrote it. No Coens anywhere in sight except as the clear inspirations for this entertaining movie of which the masters behind Blood Simple and Fargo would probably approve, and might even have made at the beginning of their illustrious careers.
So get this for a plot.
New and very inexperienced cop Will (Himesh Patel) arrives in the small East Coast town of Providence for his new job as a deputy, partnered with quirky vet Terry (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). With a pregnant wife (Lily James) and their loving dog in tow it seems like a good career move. However, Will...

To fully grasp the dire state of theatrical distribution of independent films, consider the words of John Sloss, founder and CEO of Cinetic Media, who recently told Variety:
“It’s imperative for all of us to get behind reigniting the theatrical experience because I don’t think the streamers are ever going to be behind the new voices and independent films. The only way to really get them out in the world is to put them in a theater where they can be reviewed and where they can sit long enough for word of mouth to really support them. That’s really the dangerous moment we are in, in terms of getting people back in the theaters.”
Suppose there’s a way out of the “dangerous moment” for independent cinema that Sloss describes. In that case, it will probably come about because of talented indie filmmakers like director Potsy Ponciroli and his experienced,...

The upcoming Hulu series’ latest promo gives viewers a tantalizing peek at the true-crime drama behind the ubiquitous 1980s all-male revue. Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) stars as Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the entrepreneur who started Chippendales. At the start of the trailer, Banerjee is a gas-station attendant who dreams of “sheer opulence” and eventually turns down a promotion because, “That was my dream when I got here, but my goals have changed. I have changed.”
