First Look At Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord's Lightsaber Wielding Former Sith Revealed At Comic-Con
Image
Obi-Wan Kenobi sliced Darth Maul in half and sent him tumbling to his death in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. However, at the behest of George Lucas, The Clone Wars animated series later revealed that Senator Papatine's Sith apprentice had survived.

Now rocking a pair of badass cybernetic legs, his story continued there before the villain eventually returned in Star Wars Rebels (which is where his tale also concluded after one final clash with Obi-Wan on Tatooine).

Solo: A Star Wars Story brought Maul back in live-action, and had that movie received a sequel, chances are we'd have seen more of what he got up to as the leader of Crimson Dawn. Unfortunately, the movie was a box office flop, and fans have been waiting to see Maul return ever since.

Lucasfilm is among the studios skipping this year's San Diego Comic-Con, meaning we can forget about getting any new trailers or casting information.

Image
2025 may be nearly half way through, but in the world of TV the year is still young. As such, even though you may feel like the best TV you'll see this year is already behind us as we've headed down to the severed floor for Severance Season 2, stared at our reflection once again in Charlie Brooker's Netflix series Black Mirror, brought out the billy clubs for Disney+ must-see show Daredevil: Born Again, and had our collective socks knocked off by Philip Barantini's Adolescence, we assure you a veritable streaming smorgasbord still lies ahead of us in the coming months.

Yes, we may have just finished collecting our jaw from the flaw after that Andor Season 2 finale, and yes, the second seasons of both The Last Of Us and Doctor Who may have left our heads spinning, but there's still no shortage of returning favourites, fresh franchise offerings, original programming,...

The Live-Action How To Train Your Dragon Movie Fixed The One Issue The Director Had
Image
The great thing about being able to retell your own story is that you can fix your previous mistakes. In the case of 2025's "How to Train Your Dragon," director Dean DeBlois was able to revisit his 2010 animated classic in live-action, improving not only characters like Hiccup and Toothless but also certain plot points from the original film that never made sense to begin with.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about his second go-around, DeBlois clarified how he could do damage control on a story that had remained untouched for 15 years. One particular example he brought up was a bit of a plot hole in the near-perfect original animated movie, in which the people of Berk deal with the fallout of Toothless bringing down the Red Death. As you may recall, the oversized Alpha swiftly turns the Vikings' ships to kindling after Stoick's (Gerard Butler) attack on the island housing the dragons' nest.

2025 has been one of the weaker years for the film industry as high-budget films like Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White have failed at both impressing the audience and at the box office. 28 Years Later (In Theaters) Credit – Sony Pictures

‘Full of delightful surprises’: why Spy is my feelgood movie
Paul Feig at an event for Jackpot! (2024)
The latest in our series of writers recommending their go-to comfort watches is an ode to Paul Feig’s 2015 comedy starring a never-better Melissa McCarthy

It has a plot and a cast that seem cooked up during a hallucinatory fever dream. It shouldn’t work, but it does – and so splendidly, too. In Paul Feig’s comedy Spy, Melissa McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, a timid CIA desk agent who gets sent out into the field by her fearsome boss (Alison Janney) after the death of her slick Bond-like colleague, Bradley Fine. The cast is full of delightful surprises. Rose Bryne is a stiletto-clad Oxford-educated villainess with quips so brutal that she makes Regina George look like Barney. Peter Serafinowicz does a game turn as an – admittedly very pre-#MeToo – cringey Italian pervert figure named Aldo (“like the shoe store found in American malls”).

And in the film’s most magnificent twist,...

One How To Train Your Dragon Character Gets More To Do In The Live-Action Remake
Image
There's not much from the original "How To Train Your Dragon" that Dean DeBlois' second live-action doesn't replicate. Hiccup (in this iteration played by Mason Thames) can't kill dragons, befriends one instead, and convinces the Viking residents of the island of Berk to love the winged nuisances who have been plaguing their land for years. And yet, between the test drives and carefully researched tickle spots on the flame-spitting fiends, the original film's director has managed to find more time for one particular character that helps our hero in his quest: Gabriel Howell's Snotlout Jorgenson.

In the 2010 film, Snotlout was voiced by Jonah Hill, and like the updated version, he's the pompous, arrogant member of the group trying to win Astrid's affections (then America Ferrera and now played by Nico Parker). Most of that is still there, albeit with an additional element that makes it a little bit...

The How To Train Your Dragon Remake Has A Mini Shaun Of The Dead Reunion You May Have Missed
Image
The world of cinema is both remarkably expansive and amusingly small all at once. To wit: While there are new and unique filmmakers emerging onto the scene with each passing year, the way that the business of show has operated since its inception has been to lure audiences into a new film by way of familiar faces. In some cases, movie stars are intentionally interested in working with each other over and over. However, in other cases, the stars of one film will find themselves sharing the screen with an old castmate of theirs. This might be because a film's casting director liked the way two (or more) people looked on screen together before ... or it might be total happenstance.

Whatever the case was when it came to the casting of Nick Frost and Peter Serafinowicz in the live-action remake of "How to Train Your Dragon," it just so happens...

How To Train Your Dragon: Why The New Astrid Actor Looks So Familiar
Image
If you're a fan of "How to Train Your Dragon," you may be pleasantly surprised at the changes director Dean DeBlois has made to the classic 2010 animated film (which he also co-directed) for his live-action remake. While the Viking Stoick is once again played by Gerard Butler and the Night Fury dragon Toothless looks virtually the same in both films, DeBlois gets a lot of mileage out of the new actors he casts to take over the roles. In addition to some welcome famous faces like Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, and Peter Serafinowicz, this version of "How to Train Your Dragon" has a pair of new leads in Mason Thames (playing dragon trainer Hiccup) and Nico Parker, who portrays dragon-training student Astrid.

While Parker may not yet be a name star in Hollywood, she's certainly not a total unknown. Although her acting career only began in 2019, she's appeared in several high-profile projects since then,...

Image
Before it ever became a movie, How To Train Your Dragon was first a series of twelve children’s novels written by Cressida Cowell. The franchise has since expanded with three animated films directed by Dean DeBloisand a live-action remake of the first film also directed by DeBlois. The director returned for the 2025 live-action, and this meant reunion with some of the franchise's previous collaborators. One notable absentee was original cast member David Tennant, who lent his voice toSpitelout, a tall, muscular Viking who is a warrior of the Hairy Hooligan Tribe. Tenant's character was played by Peter Serafinowicz in the film, which is now in theaters.

So why was Tennant not able to reprise his role in the live-action movie? In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, DeBlois addressed this question and whether he considered any other original cast members aside Gerard Butler, who returned to play Stoick in the 2025 live-action remake.

Box Office: ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Flies to Impressive $11.1M in Previews
Mason Thames in How to Train Your Dragon (2025)
Boasting a near-perfect audience score, Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s live-action How to Train Your Dragon flew to an impressive $11.1 million in previews.

That includes $8.6 million from regular Thursday previews and another $2.5 million in early access screenings hosted Wednesday. Combined, it’s one of the best showings of the year to date.

The family film is easily headed for a first-finish at the June 13-15 box office with a projected debut of $75 million, although that number could climb higher based on preview grosses and first reactions. As of Friday morning, the pic boasted a 99 audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Its critics score is 77 percent.

How to Train You Dragon will steal the box office crown from Disney’s smash hit live-action Lilo & Stitch, which flew past the $800 million mark at the global box office earlier this week after topping th chart for three consecutive weekends and setting numerous records.

How to Train Your Dragon takes off with over $8 million in Thursday night previews
Dean DeBlois
Dean DeBlois returns to the fantasy world of Vikings and dragons with a live-action remake of his original How to Train Your Dragon. While many are concerned that the film is a retread of the original with live actors, our own Tyler Nichols enjoyed the film despite the concerns. He mentions in his review, “There’s always plenty of debate whenever one of these live-action adaptations of a cartoon releases. No matter what filmmakers do, there’s always going to be a sect of people who disapprove. As proven by Lilo & Stitch, I am not one of those people, and simply want the cartoon translated to real life. That means there are going to be some changes because, let’s face it, cartoons don’t have to deal with logic in the same way.”

Why Didn’t David Tennant Reprise His Role in How to Train Your Dragon Live-Action? Dean DeBlois Reveals
Image
The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon is now soaring in theaters, and one original cast member from the animated movies did not appear. David Tennant, known primarily for his works on Doctor Who and Jessica Jones, failed to reprise his role as Spitelout Jorgenson. Instead, they cast Peter Serafinowicz.

This project was announced in 2023 with Dean DeBlois directing, writing, and producing the film after spearheading the animated movies. As much as he wanted to bring in all of the original voice actors into the remake, many of them did not physically match their characters.

Why David Tennant Didn't Return For Live-Action How To Train Your Dragon Explained By Director
Image
Dean DeBlois, the director of both the animated and 2025 live-action versions of How to Train Your Dragon, explains why original cast member David Tennant wasn't offered to reprise his role in the new movie. The actor lent his voice to Spitelout, a tall, muscular Viking who is a warrior of the Hairy Hooligan Tribe, in the rest of the franchise. However, he didn't return for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, which is now in theaters. Instead, the character is played by Peter Serafinowicz.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, DeBlois addressed whether he has considered any other original cast members aside from Gerard Butler for roles in the 2025 live-action remake. The director complimented Tennant and "felt embarrassed" that they couldn't find a "big enough role" for him. He further explained that Tennant couldn't reprise his voice role in the new movie because, physically, the actor isn't the right fit.

How to Train Your Dragon Director Explains Cutting These Original Movie Scenes From the Live-Action Remake

How to Train Your Dragondirector Dean DeBlois explains how the live-action adaptation ended up so much longer than the original.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, DeBlois confirmed that the upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon contains at least 27 minutes of new material. DeBlois discussed this expanded screenplay, explaining that "A lot of individual scenes just grew because we allowed for the relationships to run a little deeper... So the action is dialed up, but so is the interplay between characters."

For an example, DeBlois pointed toward, "The scene in which Hiccup is supposed to kill a Monstrous Nightmare in front of the whole village." DeBlois noted that "There’s time spent with Astrid and Hiccup in the tunnel. There’s a little more time spent with Stoic and Hiccup, and there’s the intense scene that unfolds in the arena as Toothless bursts in and tries to protect Hiccup.

Nico Parker is paying no attention to the How to Train Your Dragon backlash over her casting.

The review embargo for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon lifted late last night (you can read a breakdown of those here). Interestingly, the movie's Rotten Tomatoes score tells a different story from what seemed like relatively mixed verdicts from critics.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, How to Train Your Dragon currently sits at 83% based on 40 reviews. That's "Certified Fresh" territory, and suggests even the reviewers who were left underwhelmed still deemed it "Fresh" on the review aggregator.

Despite plenty of complaints about it essentially being a shot-for-shot remake—The Wrap, for example, decried it as a "squandered opportunity"—this score should give How to Train Your Dragon a fighting chance to dethrone Lilo & Stitch at the global box office this weekend.

For comparison's sake, 2010's How to Train Your Dragon from DreamWorks Animation is "Certified Fresh" at 99%. The sequel scored 92%, with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World...

How To Train Your Dragon Reviews Point To Another Unnecessary Live-Action Remake (That Occasionally Soars)
Image
Disney has struggled to crack the code of successfully adapting animated classics to live-action. There have been plenty of box office hits, and while some (Maleficent) have successfully expanded those words, others are either shot-for-shot remakes or upset fans by making too many changes.

It feels like the House of Mouse can't win, but there's money to be made, and DreamWorks is now looking to get in on the action with the live-action How to Train Your Dragon.

The trailers have pointed to it being more The Lion King than Snow White in terms of faithfully recreating its animated predecessor. However, the first wave of reviews indicates that much of the magic has been lost along the way.

Variety's verdict is positive and explains, "Dean DeBlois protects his baby, showing that the leap from computer animation to 'live action' is safer than the trial-and-error update strategy that Disney has been attempting with its hand-drawn classics.

Amazon’s Head Of Unscripted Series Jenny Falkoff Joins Netflix
Image
Exclusive: Netflix has hired another unscripted executive from Amazon.

The Love Is Blind streamer has appointed Jenny Falkoff, fresh from the success of Beast Games, to its Jeff Gaspin-led unscripted team.

Falkoff is being tasked with helping Netflix find more large, “splashy” competition formats and “buzzy” social experiments. As Gaspin told Deadline last year, he is now focusing on “bigger formats, more of what you would call broadcast-style shows versus the cable style shows”. It comes after recent greenlights for series such as The Golden Ticket, first revealed by Deadline, and Star Search.

Falkoff was previously head of unscripted series at Amazon, having spent seven months in that role, after previously having been head of reality series for nearly two years.

It comes eight months after her former colleague Alysia Russo, who was head of docuseries at Amazon, made the same move to join Netflix. It used to be...

How To Train Your Dragon's Epic IMAX Trailer Delivers Plenty Of Breathtaking Spectacle (And Toothless)
Image
How to Train Your Dragon stands a chance of being one of this summer's biggest movies, and IMAX is encouraging fantasy fans to see it on the biggest screen possible with an epic new must-see trailer.

This latest sneak peek is heavy on action and spectacle, with the plan clearly to entice moviegoers to return to this world for a take on this story that's far bigger in scale than what we saw in animation a decade and a half ago. While the story is expected to remain the same, it's clear the ante has been upped in a big way here.

As with most live-action remakes, many fans have questioned the need for How to Train Your Dragon to head down this route.

According to filmmaker Dean DeBlois, it was all about getting to achieve the vision for this story that he was unable to fully bring to the screen with the 2010 animated classic.
