Image
Exclusive: Cindy Lee, director of the Oscar-nominated 2025 live-action short The Last Ranger, has signed with Luber Roklin Entertainment for management.

The South African filmmaker’s The Last Ranger is inspired by the true story of Thandi, a rhino that survived a brutal attack, and the people who fought to save her life. The film was co-written by David S. Lee, Darwin Shaw and Will Hawkes, with the latter two producing under their Six Feet Films banner.

Most recently, Lee directed The Morning After, a series selected to screen at the 2025 Berlinale, which earned her a nomination for Best Direction at the Venice TV Awards. Previously, she directed the South African television series Desert Rose,...

Cindy Lee & Darwin Shaw Explore the Human Cost of Conservation in Their Oscar Nominated Short ‘The Last Ranger’
Image
After decades of awareness about the evils of poaching and the relentless decimation of the world’s rhino species you’d hope that these brutal practices would now be a thing of the past unfortunately, that’s very much far from the truth with a reported 499 rhinos killed in South Africa in 2023 – a concerning 10% rise on the previous year. Born out of Kindred Films’ eight episode series of stories from across the globe created to highlight our interconnectedness, Oscar nominated short The Last Ranger directed by Cindy Lee is a moving and at times infuriating story about the rangers who risk their lives daily to protect these magnificent creatures against the callous actions of the poachers who pursue them for profit. It is also a bellwether that perhaps people are finally overcoming an aversion to the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles which allows us to connect with stories no matter where they spring from,...

Oscar-Nominated Shorts Filmmakers Swap Stories About Their Creative Process
Image
The creative teams behind seven Oscar-nominated shorts took part in TheWrap’s Screening Series on Monday, where filmmakers discussed their work ahead of the 97th annual Academy Awards on March 2. Two showcases — live-action/documentary shorts and animated shorts — were held at The Culver Theater in Culver City, California, with both Q&a sessions moderated by TheWrap’s Executive Editor of Awards, Steve Pond.

The first showcase celebrated three nominated films in the live-action and documentary shorts categories.

“I’m Not a Robot” (live-action short) follows a music producer who questions whether she’s a robot after repeatedly failing Captcha tests. “It started as a funny thought, but then my imagination took a darker turn and I really started to wonder,” director Victoria Warmerdam said. “I was really intrigued by the ‘Truman Show’ aspects because, for some reason, I’m so scared that someday someone will tell me that the world is...

‘The Last Ranger’ Tells True Story Of Fight To Save Rhinos In South Africa: “We Had Something Special” – Contenders Film: The Nominees
Image
The Last Ranger tells the true story of Thandi, a rhino that survived a brutal attack, and the people who fought to save her life.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Amakhala Game Reserve in South Africa, Kushelwa (Avumile Qongqo) is the last remaining ranger, and the Cindy Lee-directed movie nominated for an Oscar in the Live Action Short Film category follows her and her young, would-be protégé Litha (Liyabona Mroqoza) as they are caught up in the rhino-poaching crisis.

During a panel discussion at Deadline’s Contenders: The Nominees event, Lee said this story felt incredibly important to show the world. “The whole thing with the rhino poaching is really, really devastating,” she said. “And it’s quite surprising to know outside of South Africa, how few people are really aware of what’s going on in South Africa. That one rhino is poached every 15 hours and...

Originally delayed due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the announcement was made on January 23, from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Brady Corbet’s ‘The Brutalist’ leads the pack with multiple nominations, lauded for its ambitious narrative chronicling the life of an immigrant architect in mid-20th-century America.

The Best Actress category has drawn significant attention, with Demi Moore (The Substance) and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez) leading the conversation. Moore’s performance has been hailed as one of the best of her career, while Gascón’s nomination is historic, representing a landmark moment for transgender actors in Hollywood.

Pandemic-Themed ‘Antiviral Film Project’ Launches From Darwin Shaw, Will Hawkes (Exclusive)
Darwin Shaw
The coronavirus pandemic has not deterred Los Angeles-based actor-filmmakers Darwin Shaw and Will Hawkes.

The duo has launched “The Antiviral Film Project” in recent weeks as a collage of 19 shorts made by 19 film crews from 19 global communities for 19 charities, leading to three films that will be produced in traditional fashion once self-isolation ends.

“The Antiviral Film Project aims to create a new kind of international motion picture anthology about the global Covid-19 experience,” said Shaw. “It will be a journey told in three chapters — Isolation, Connection and Emergence. We will be documenting the process of virtual development in real-time, producing episodic behind-the-scenes content, taking you on the journey with us and ultimately leading to a three picture cinematic experience.”

“It is a participatory event, and our vision extends far beyond the pandemic,” said Hawkes. “We want to harness the energy of this shared focus to create stories that provide catharsis...

First Trailer for Astral Projection Gone Very Wrong Horror Film 'Astral'
"I can't really tell you how to do it, I can only describe how I did it." Vertical Entertainment has released the first official trailer for an indie horror thriller from the UK titled Astral, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Chris Mul. The film's story follows a metaphysics university student who discovers the practice of "astral projection" and the scientific possibility of a dimension outside our own. Coming to terms with the untimely death of his mother, Alex turns to astral projection in an attempt to reconnect with her. Of course, evil never dies. Astral stars Frank Dillane as Alex, with Vanessa Grasse, Damson Idris, Catherine Steadman, Trevor White, and Darwin Shaw. At first glance, this seems pretty much like every other demonic spirit horror film out there, I'm not really sure what makes it unique. But it's worth a look anyway. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Chris Mul's Astral,...

New Son Of God Movie Delivered A Mediocre Version Of Jesus’ Story & More
New Son Of God movie delivered a mediocre version of Jesus' story & more. 20th Century Fox released their new drama flick, "Son Of God," into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out, and thought it was pretty mediocre at best. I actually thought the 2000 TV version ,named "Jesus," delivered a much better version of the Jesus story. This one stars: Diogo Morgado, Greg Hicks, Adrian Schiller, Darwin Shaw, Sebastian Knapp, Joe Wredden, Simon Kunz, Paul Marc Davis, Matthew Gravelle, Amber Rose Revah, and Roma Downey. Basically, this movie was just another rehashed telling of the story of Jesus the Christ, and it really came off that way. It showed his humble birth and all of his most popular miracles he performed like healing the crippled man, finding all the fish in the water, raising Lazarus from the dead ,and more. We also saw the drama he incurred with Pharisees,...

Son of God (2014)
Son of God is a Chintzy Melodrama About the Horrors of Capital Punishment
Son of God (2014)
When we first meet the hero of Son of God, a kind of chintzy melodrama about the horrors of capital punishment, he’s approaching a fisherman with a classic boiler-room pitch: "Just give me an hour, and I will give you a whole new life," Jesus (Diogo Morgado) promises Peter (Darwin Shaw), this messiah’s self-amused look and extra dimples suggesting the face of different J.C.: Jim Carrey. Often, working a miracle, he looks as pleased as a professional magician dazzling with a trick. Peter agrees to hear him out and is rewarded with a holy fish bounty. We never really hear the rest of what Jesus says to him, which is a shame. That 60-minute presentation would be a gift in comparison to this kid-traumatizing 138-minute nails-in-the-hands storybook, a movie that sh...

'Atlantis' episode 5 review: Jason, Ariadne on the run in 'White Lies'
'White Lies' is what one might term an 'Ariadne-centric' episode of Atlantis - a bit of a blank slate at first, Aiysha Hart's enchanting princess has displayed fiery flashes of personality in the past few weeks. Here, caught in the middle of a family crisis, she finally takes something approaching centre stage.

With Ariadne locked away in her ivory tower and Jason down among the peasants, the story-of-the-week gives the pining pair an excuse to finally share some meaningful screen time after weeks of brief, longing glances.

What we're subsequently treated to is a little teen-romance-by-numbers - conversations through locked doors, Jason catching the briefest of glances as his lady love changes clothes - but Hart and her scene partner Jack Donnelly are both charming performers who make this familiar 'will they / won't they' shtick watchable.

The main thrust of 'White Lies' concerns Ariadne's brother...

Thankfully, Ariadne has a plan that involves duping Jason into escorting her handmaiden and it is soon discovered that the poor, mysterious stranger was delivering a note to say that Ariadne’s brother, Therus, the betrayer of his Kingdom, is actually very much alive and well, seeking justice for the lies that have been told about him.

Ariadne’s brother is seeking his...

Elder Engineer from 'Prometheus' Deleted Scenes Revealed
If you read my lengthy exploratory piece examining my theories with regards to Ridley Scott's Prometheus you'll remember on the first page where I mention in the opening scene there originally were two Engineers seen, not just one. Well, instead of just the concept art from "Prometheus: The Art of the Film" as seen above, now courtesy of a Facebook page belonging to Connor O'Sullivan (via Prometheus Forum) we have the following image that shows what the Elder Engineer (played by Matthew Rook) actually looked like. Scott has already said there will be upwards of 28 minutes of deleted scenes on the Prometheus Blu-ray (pre-order it here) and Darwin Shaw, who plays one of the Engineers seen later in the film, commented on Twitter saying, "You'll have to wait for the Directors cut for the full opening scene!" Personally, I can't wait to see how the full scene plays out...

What is Going On in 'Prometheus'? A Universe of Questions, Answers and Theories
Michael Fassbender in Prometheus

Photo: 20th Century Fox "I love him who willeth the creating of something beyond himself and thus perisheth." Friedrich Nietzsche in "Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for All and None" Update: I have edited the age of Peter Weyland on Page 4 as a result of incorrect information I had previously. I can't say I have Ridley Scott's Prometheus figured out. Not in the least. But I do have my own theories and I thought I'd offer up some exploratory thoughts in an attempt to figure out if what Scott and screenwriters Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof brought to life actually carries weight or if they had no real clue what they were doing and instead left the audience to do all the heavy lifting. Not that I mind doing the work, clearly, but I like to know I'm doing it for a reason. Over the...

Jayasundara To Grow Some 'Mushrooms' in Directors' Fortnight
Bappaditya Bandopadhyay, producer of Sri Lankan filmmaker Vimukthi Jayasundara's third feature film Mushrooms announced today that the film will be part of the Directors' Fortnight selection, which is set to be officially unveiled in about T-minus 36 hours. Jayasundara's debut film The Forsaken Land did quite well for itself when it premiered in Cannes in 2005, winning the Camera d'Or for best debut feature. His next film, Between Two Worlds, premiered at the 2009 Venice Film Festival, and while it didn't win anything, it's picked up some heavy acclaim from the few who have seen it (filmmaker Dan Sallitt lists it in his Top 10 list for 2009). Mushrooms cast includes Hollywood actor Darwin Shaw (Casino Royale, Prince of Persia), who will apparently play a Spanish soldier in the film, as well as Bengali actress Paoli Dam (Kaalbela). Few details are known about the plot so far for this sampling of South Asian film,...
