French-u.K. outfit Alief has acquired international sales rights to Indian filmmaker Bhargav Saikia’s supernatural folk horror “Bokshi,” ahead of its world premiere in International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Harbour section.

The film follows Anahita, a troubled teen who finds solace in Shalini, a mysterious history teacher leading a trek to an ancient site called ‘The Navel.’ The school excursion takes an eerie turn as connections emerge between the site and a cult worshipping Bokshi, a feared folkloric demoness.

“Bokshi,” which means “witch” in Nepali, represents a departure from India’s recent horror-comedy trend, instead offering a darker, more atmospheric take on the genre. “At its core, it is a cautionary tale that sheds light on universal and socially relevant themes of women empowerment and humanity’s relation with Mother Earth,” Saikia tells Variety. “The film attempts to subvert the negative idea of the witch prevalent in society and...

It’s hard to imagine a more iconic Bollywood pairing than Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. The duo, celebrated for their unforgettable chemistry in hits like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, were almost cast in Mani Ratnam’s Alai Payuthey. The filmmaker, renowned for his ability to craft visually poetic romances, revealed during an open forum at the G5A Retrospective that he initially envisioned his 2000 Tamil classic with Srk and Kajol. However, the dream project never materialized.

Mani Ratnam shared that while Shah Rukh Khan was on board and Kajol was the natural choice for the female lead, the project stalled due to a narrative challenge. This creative hurdle led him to shelve the idea and move on to another iconic film, Dil Se. Mani Ratnam eventually made Alai Payuthey with R. Madhavan and Shalini.

IFFR always had the most significant selection of Asian films among European film festivals, both in terms of quantity and quality. It seems this year, however, the programmers truly outdid themselves, with what seems to be one of the biggest selection of Asian films ever in the festival. India and Indonesia seem to lead the way, but the selection from Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Iran is also intense. Among the highlights is definitely Miike’s latest, “Blazing Fists”, with the director also attending, as much as the works of Toyoda, Lou Ye and Jia Zhangke, while the return of some of the festival’s favorites, like Perumal and Ertanto are also rather anticipated. Actress Adah Sharma, who is all set to play a charismatic bar dancer in the second season of ‘Sunflower’, has shared insights about her ‘scary’ role, revealing how she watched a lot of documentaries on serial killers and psychopaths to get into the skin of her character.

Varanasi (Up), May 31 (Ians) Artisans of GI-tagged woodcraft and zardozi work here have made 15 3-D miniature models of the new Parliament building.

Women artisans have also prepared an ‘angavastram’ (stole) in Banarasi zardozi craft, showing the images of new and old Parliament buildings.

Lucknow, March 20 (Ians) An 8-year-old boy suffering from a congenital heart disease was operated upon in a coordinated manner by doctors of four departments in the King George’s Medical University (Kgmu).

The boy, a resident of Sitapur district, came to hospital with difficulty in breathing and oxygen saturation of 50 to 60 per cent. He was admitted to the paediatrics department under Prof Mala and Dr Shalini.

According to the Kgmu spokesman, the child was diagnosed with Teratology of Fallot that affects normal blood flow through the heart.

“The illness is a type of cyanotic congenital heart disease (Chd) and babies do not survive for long. It has incidence rate of 0.34 per 1000 live births,” said Prof S.K. Singh of the department of cardiac surgery.

Four departments — paediatrics, cardiology, cardiac anaesthesia and cardiac surgery — came together to save the child.
