In the history of Saturday Night Live, was anything as secretive and anticipated as the moment this season right before Timothée Chalamet appeared onstage to sing the first of three Bob Dylan numbers? Which songs would they be? How would he sound? For me, it was all strangely familiar — a throwback to the moment when a lucky bunch of us in the SNL audience witnessed a complete-unknown music moment of its time, and from an equally unexpected source.

John Mulaney took the “Saturday Night Live” 50th anniversary special on a five-decade journey through the ups and downs of the show’s New York City home base. Starting with the 1975 birth of the series, Mulaney’s star-studded medley began with convincing former cast members Pete Davidson and David Spade that the grimy 1970s was still a glorious time to live in New York.
From there, it was a decade-by-decade look at the city, with Adam Driver dressed as a hot dog, Kate McKinnon showing up as a disgraced former mayor Rudy Giuliani and Scarlett Johansson dressed as Audrey from “Little Shop of Horrors,” joking about real-life husband Colin Jost. Also, Nathan Lane sang an ode to cocaine to the tune of “The Lion King’s” “Hakuna Matata” — a song he sang for the film as Timon.
Other guest spots included one-time “SNL” musical directors Paul Shaffer and G.E. Smith,...

The 50th anniversary special of "Saturday Night Live" doesn't happen until Sunday night, live at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt on both NBC and Peacock, but the festivities kicked off early on Friday, just in time to show "SNL" some love on Valentine's Day.
Along with the recently released spectacular documentary series looking back at the history of "SNL," Peacock aired a livestream of "SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert," a star-studded event that unfolded live in New York City at Radio City Music Hall on February 14. Not only did the special event bring together some of the biggest musical acts from the five-decade history of the late night sketch comedy series, from Cher to Lady Gaga to Jack White and more, but it featured some of the show's cast members doing musical bits -- not to mention a stunning array of celebrities just having a good time watching the eclectic music line-up.

How do you possibly follow Miley Cyrus and Bad Bunny during the SNL50: The Homecoming Concert? With a classic sketch character.
SNL alum Bill Murray graced the stage Friday at Radio City Music Hall in New York City as he reprised his smooth-talking character Nick the Lounge Singer (aka Nick Valentine) from the NBC sketch comedy show, accompanied by Paul Shaffer on piano.
Following a humorous monologue about “an increasing acceptance of different types of families, different types of relationships,” before introducing “three of the most beautiful ladies a man could ever hope to meet.”
Murray, who created the character during his 1977-1980 run as an SNL castmember, was then joined by fellow alums Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph and Cecily Strong in ’60s chic backup singer attire, accompanying him with a performance of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “You’re All I Need to Get By.”

David Letterman was famously denied the chance to take over The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson retired in 1992, but he made his way to the show 33 years later on Monday evening when he crashed the stage midway through Jimmy Fallon’s opening monologue. “Oh my God, David Letterman!” Fallon said in mock surprise. “What are you doing here?”
“Is this the 23rd hour of The Today Show?” Letterman asked Fallon. “Jimmy?!”

David Letterman — with help from some flour tortillas — made a return to the late night stage Monday.
Letterman crashed Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show monologue Monday night, wandering onto the stage as Fallon was making some jokes about Sunday’s Super Bowl. “Is this the 23rd hour of the Today show?” Letterman asked.
The appearance from the former Late Night and Late Show host offered a reunion with bandleader Paul Shaffer, who is sitting in with his World’s Most Dangerous Band on The Tonight Show this week. The Roots, Fallon’s usual band, are off for the week as they prepare for Friday’s SNL50: The Homecoming Concert on Peacock.
“Paul and I used to do a show pretty much exactly like this,” Letterman noted to the Tonight Show audience. “We didn’t do the Chuck E. Cheese crap” — referring to Fallon’s frequent games with his guests — “but it was very similar.

John Oliver wasn’t the only late night icon to crash this week. “The Tonight Show” started Monday off with a surprise appearance from the now-retired David Letterman, who poked fun at Jimmy Fallon while reuniting with bandleader Paul Shaffer.
Fittingly, there was no build up to Letterman’s surprise appearance. After Fallon debuted his Super Bowl Excuse Generator, the comedy legend pretended to wander onto the stage. “Is this the 23rd hour of the ‘Today’ show?” the former TV host asked once the crowd finally settled down.
Letterman stopped by as part of a reunion of sorts with his longtime sidekick, Shaffer. The musician stood by Letterman’s side during both NBC’s “Late Night With David Letterman” and CBS’ “Late Show With David Letterman.” Shaffer is currently filling in for The Roots this week since the house band is in rehearsals as they prepare for “SNL50: The Homecoming Concert.

David Letterman never realized his dream of taking over Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. But at least he got to do the next best thing, returning last night to tell Jimmy Fallon how badly he’s botching the job.
The occasion seems to have been Paul Shaffer calling in a favor. Shaffer and the World’s Most Dangerous Band, Letterman’s longtime sidekicks, are filling in on The Tonight Show this week as the Roots prepare for the Saturday Night Live anniversary concert. But Shaffer himself isn’t sure how he got roped into sharing a stage with Fallon. “You ever take too much Ambien and then you wake up somewhere with no clue how the hell you got there?” he asked.
“Wow,” Letterman replied. “You’ve been reading my diary.”

John Oliver’s not the only talk show host who can drop in on another show unexpectedly. Last night, the great David Letterman made a rare appearance on the Tonight Show right in the middle of Jimmy Fallon’s monologue.
Catching the audience – if not Fallon – by surprise, Letterman dropped by to see his old friend Paul Shaffer and the World’s Most Dangerous Band, who were sitting in for Tonight‘s The Roots (who apparently were rehearsing for the big Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary concert.

From there, Fallon offered Letterman the opportunity to tell some monologue jokes, with Letterman bypassing the suggested cue card quips. “I’m good, thanks.”

It was a night of surprise returns on late-night Monday (February 10), as not only did John Oliver make a surprise appearance on The Daily Show, but talk show legend David Letterman returned to The Tonight Show. Letterman made his shocking appearance during host Jimmy Fallon‘s opening monologue, leaving viewers at home and those in the studio audience completely gobsmacked. Fallon was riffing with Paul Shaffer and the World’s Most Dangerous Band, Letterman’s longtime sidekick and band from his time hosting CBS’ Late Show from 1982 to 2015 — Shaffer and co were filling in for Fallon’s regular house band, The Roots, who are rehearsing for the upcoming Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary concert. During the monologue, the band started playing Letterman’s old theme song as a confused-looking Letterman emerged from behind the curtain. He was met with rapturous applause as he took his position on stage beside Fallon.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is reaching back into late-night TV history to find a temporary replacement for The Roots. The NBC show announced a familiar face is returning to TV later this month.
Musician Paul Shaffer will fill in for The Roots on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon beginning next week. Jimmy Fallon's usual band will be busy rehearsing for the concert special put on as part of Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary.

The Roots are perhaps the most talented band on the planet, let alone in late-night TV. So it's no easy task for anyone to replace them.
Musician Paul Shaffer will fill in for The Roots on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon beginning next week. Jimmy Fallon's usual band will be busy rehearsing for the concert special put on as part of Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary.

NBC continues to celebrate the 50th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live” with the new documentary, “Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music.” Following the recent four-episode docuseries “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night,” amid the 50th season, which airs Sundays, and ahead of the star-studded, three-hour primetime event “SNL50: The Anniversary Special,” the feature-length music doc promises a deep dive into the musical performances that have become as much of a cultural hallmark as the comedy show’s sketches.
The doc is directed by Grammy and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Emmy Award winner Oz Rodriguez, and features a roster of more than 50 interviews with musicians and “SNL” staffers, including Elvis Costello, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish & Finneas, Dave Grohl, Debbie Harry & Chris Stein, Mick Jagger, Dua Lipa, Lorne Michaels, Fred Armisen, Conan O’Brien, Bill Hader, Eddie Murphy, Maya Rudolph, Bowen Yang and many, many more.

Don’t be too dazzled when host Timothée Chalamet double-dips as his own musical guest on Saturday Night Live later this month. Sure, it’s impressive, but not that unusual — he’ll be the 49th host to pull off the feat. But most of those hosts, from Mick Jagger to Dolly Parton to Charli Xcx, were musicians first who muddled their way through a few comedy sketches. Chalamet is one of the rare SNL hosts to attempt the reverse.
Here are five performers not known primarily for music who nonetheless rocked the house on SNL…
1 Lily Tomlin
Well, here’s a weird one. When Tomlin showed up in Season Eight for her third hosting gig, the musical guest was Black R&b singer Pervis Hawkins — a Tomlin character in full beard. The songs have been scrubbed from the Peacock episode, and there are no clips on YouTube, presumably because Tomlin performed the character in blackface.

It took a minute for audiences to catch on to Bill Murray when he replaced Chevy Chase on Saturday Night Live. But after a few months, Murray finally broke through thanks to his old Second City characters like Nick the Lounge Singer.

Nick’s trashy covers of popular songs like “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” and “That’s the Way I Like It” sent up Vegas’ worst, a parody of the cheesiest kind of entertainer. “Billy’s performance was so over-the-top,” remembered Paul Shaffer in SNL oral history Live From New York. “I never knew what his criteria were (for choosing songs), but whatever he wanted to do was just right.”
Fast-forward nearly 50 years, and parody has become reality. Bill Murray and His Blood Brothers, a dad-rock cover band, just launched a U.S. mini-tour, according to Consequence. The tour kicked off in Chicago last week,...

Whoopi Goldberg has a long history of leaving people absolutely baffled and taken aback by her — be it through her unparalleled acting chops on the screens or simply her unhesitantly candid personality that has her speaking her heart and mind whenever and wherever she wants. Turns out, she had that very effect on Keanu Reeves as well.

When the pair appeared together for an interview, Goldberg simply channeled her true and honest inner self that had her touching on whichever subject she wanted, even if it could leave the other person freaked out. This is why, when she exposed one of her deepest secrets to Reeves during the same, he couldn’t help but hold a hilariously scared reaction to her revelation.

While there are a lot of Disney characters who easily stand out on their own, there are some iconic Disney duos that show how much fun a pair can be. Disney has always loved exploring friendship in their animated movies and they have done so successfully since the beginning of their run. However, even in their long history, some Disney duos rise above the rest and showcase those truly special pairings that have delivered laughs, heartbreak, and charm to audiences over the years.
Including all the Pixar movies alongside the animated Disney roster, there are a lot of notable pairs to choose from. There are some friends who clearly go back a long way, like Mike and Sully in Monsters Inc. Some start out with a lot of tension only to find common ground, like Moana and Maui. Of course, some Disney duos are just fun to watch sharing the screen,...

Bob Dylan is on a lot of people’s minds these days thanks to the upcoming biopic A Complete Unknown, which chronicles Dylan’s early rise in the folk music scene, up until he decided to “go electric” in 1965 (sadly it ends before we see him “go Christmas album” in 2009).
In light of all the recent Dylan chatter, retired talk show host/occasional jury candidate David Letterman took to YouTube to share his thoughts about the legendary musician. Specifically, Letterman talked about the time that Dylan tanked a performance on his show, possibly on purpose.
In 1992, just a year before he hopped over to CBS, Letterman celebrated 10 years of NBC’s Late Night program with a lavish anniversary special held at Radio City Musical Hall. In addition to various clips and an appearance from Bill Murray, the event featured “special musical guest” Bob Dylan and an “all-star band.”

America’s late-night talk show hosts are currently reeling from the dismal election results, but what about ex-hosts?
Well, Jay Leno proclaimed that it was a “great day for democracy” during an interview on The Talk, proving once again that we really don’t need to hear from Jay Leno on any subject ever again for the rest of his life. Meanwhile, Leno’s former competitor David Letterman has also been weighing in on the election, albeit in a slightly subtler manner.
Letterman was a vocal supporter of the Democrats this year, and was scheduled to host a fundraiser for Joe Biden until he dropped out. The event still happened, but with Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff instead — although not getting Commander, Biden’s bitey German Shepherd, to perform some Stupid Pet Tricks feels like a missed opportunity.

David Letterman just did what he wanted. There are tons of examples of the talk show host stepping over the line or making fun of his guests, but none of his awkward interactions topped a particular episode of Late Show from 1994.
Letterman met his match in the guise of a pop star. He tried to make demeaning remarks about the guest's personal life, and urged her to kiss a member of the audience. The pop star, however, fired back and proceeded to call him a "sick f**k" in return. Who was the pop star? None other than the queen of controversy herself, Madonna.
Letterman and Madonna clashed back in 1994
Letterman sealed his fate before Madonna even walked out. He mentioned that the pop star had "slept with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry," which even managed to get a shocked response from Letterman's sidekick, Paul Shaffer.

Norm Macdonald isn’t primarily known for his celebrity impressions, but during his time on Saturday Night Live, he imitated Bob Dole and Burt Reynolds as well as also managed to gift/curse us all with this scarily accurate take on Quentin Tarantino.
But the best Macdonald impression, many would argue, is his David Letterman.
Impressions of Letterman weren’t totally new to SNL. Back in 1983, Joe Piscopo played the host while he was still part of the NBC family. Piscopo’s Letterman was serviceable, but ultimately, uninspired.
Macdonald, on the other hand, was somehow able to tap into the core of Letterman’s comic persona, only slightly amplifying his mannerisms, and ultimately turning the Late Show star into a frenzied sketch comedy character without all that much exaggeration. And shout-out to Mark McKinney for his overly sycophantic Paul Shaffer.
Macdonald must have been doing something right, because even now,...

The New York Times’ Jason Zinoman has a bone to pick with Saturday Night, the new movie about the first episode of SNL. For all of the movie’s comedy history lessons, why didn’t it include young Lorne Michael’s animosity for the era’s grand dame of sketch, Carol Burnett?
While Saturday Night is already overstuffed with show lore, Zinoman is right that Burnett was treated as comedy kryptonite in SNL’s earliest days. Host Buck Henry remembered wanting to rewrite an early sketch to give it more of a traditional ending, but SNL writers dismissed him. “It was considered really corny to go for a joke,” he remembered in oral history Live From New York. “They thought somehow it was like Carol Burnett.”
Paul Shaffer had similar memories. Even something like the credits had to be approached in a counterculture style, otherwise, “it sounded, as we said back then,...

There’s never been a more pugnacious late-night comedy guy than Dave Letterman, a man who lived for uncomfortable moments. From Paris Hilton to Justin Bieber to Farrah Fawcett, Letterman leaned into uneasiness. That mostly made for hilariously awkward conversations, but occasionally, the conflicts threatened to erupt into full-on fights.
Here are five times it appeared like violence might break out on late-night television…
1 Crispin Glover Play
Glover looked like he was about to mix it up with a stagehand when Letterman introduced him, setting the stage for the antics to come. From there, it was hard to tell if Glover was attempting Andy Kaufman-esque performance art or if the young actor was truly disturbed. As Glover melted down on stage, Letterman asked Paul Shaffer if it was the first time he’d watched a man drown. The actor grew more agitated, first flexing his biceps and challenging Letterman to an arm-wrestling contest,...

One of Rob Reiner’s greatest filmmaking credits is the classic mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. But he became the maker of an actual documentary – not a faux one – with Albert Brooks: Defending My Life. This morning (while working on the sequel to Spinal Tap in New Orleans) he learned he’s become an Emmy nominee for the HBO film about his lifelong buddy, Brooks.
“It’s a total surprise,” he said of the Emmy recognition for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special and for his direction of the film. “Especially because I’ve never made a real documentary. The only one I made was a fake one – Spinal Tap. It’s so funny to get recognized in this way.”

Like most comedy celebrities of a certain age, Paul Shaffer has penned a memoir of his showbiz glory days. We’ll Be Here for the Rest of Our Lives is full of goofy stories about his tenure on Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman, as well as another story that Shaffer would probably like back — or at least he might want to word it differently.
In the 1970s, Shaffer was working on his short-lived sitcom, A Year at the Top. Norman Lear produced the show, filmed on the same lot as Lear’s more popular programs like All in the Family, Maude and The Jeffersons. There was one other show as well, and one of its stars caught Shaffer’s eye. “I’d wander over to the One Day at a Time set, where I met Valerie Bertinelli,” he remembered. “She and I had a few fun dates.

The past several years haven’t been too great for Martin Short’s celebrity-interviewing alter-ego Jiminy Glick. After popping up in the canceled variety series Maya & Marty, Jiminy arguably hit an all-time low when he interviewed “Donald Trump,” as played by Jimmy Fallon, on The Tonight Show.
Play
But the Glick character rebounded in a big way this week, first with a lukewarm roast of Bill Maher, followed by an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where the portly character hilariously questioned Bill Hader about the death of Willie Mays and life at Diddy’s pool house.
According to Short, he didn’t originally create Glick to parody bad journalists, but rather, to satirize “morons with power.” And to further immerse himself in the character, he donned an understandably controversial fat suit, inspired by a scene in the 1991 comedy Pure Luck, in which his character gets stung by a bee and swells up.
