By 1965, Andy Warhol had already revolutionized the art world with his depictions of soup cans, Marilyn Monroe, and Brillo boxes. His interests grew to include rock & roll — he started managing the Velvet Underground and eventually produced their debut, The Velvet Underground & Nico — and he began making even more films, which starred members of his retinue including Edie Sedgwick, Gerard Malanga, and Mary Woronov, among others. Seeing how he fascinated the world, Life magazine hired photojournalist Steve Schapiro to document Warhol’s cultural ascension. Ultimately, the magazine never published the story.

Steve Schapiro, a famed photojournalist whose work covering the entertainment industry spawned enduring images of films like “The Godfather” and “Taxi Driver,” died from pancreatic cancer at his home in Chicago on Sunday evening. He was 87 years old.

Schapiro began his pursuit of photography at the age of nine, beginning by capturing New York City. He went on to live with and study under photojournalist W. Eugene Smith. During the 1960’s, Schapiro’s photographs began to appear in publications like Life, Look, Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and others.

He also produced photo-essays with a sociological emphasis, reporting on subjects like narcotics addiction, Easter in Harlem, the presidential campaign of Robert Kennedy, migrant workers and Haight-Ashbury. Schapiro also considered himself an activist, covering stories related to the Civil Rights movement, including the March on Washington and the aftermath of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination.

Considering how many re-issues and restorations there have been for Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather trilogy, Paramount certainly wasn’t going to skimp on the 50th anniversary of the American classic, which was released on March 24, 1972. The studio has now announced its plans to celebrate the major milestone with new restorations of all three films under Coppola’s direction. First up, beginning on February 25, The Godfather will return to theaters, exclusively in Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres in the U.S., as well as in international territories around the world. Then, on March 22, the films will be made available for the first time ever in 4K Ultra HD.

Director Martin Scorcese’s 1976 film Taxi Driver is beyond iconic: its groundbreaking visuals are instantly recognizable by anyone, even those who haven’t seen the film. Later this month, publisher Taschen is scheduled to release a collection of stills from the film snapped by set photographer Steven Shapiro, touted as ‘previously unseen.’ The book is edited by Paul Duncan, and Scorcese himself penned the forward. Judging by the preview photos, the book looks gorgeous, even by Taschen standards. The Deluxe Edition, including a protective case, is limited to 1,000 copies.
