On Tuesday, HarperPop announced that it’ll release Rocky Horror: A Behind the Scenes Look at the Cult Classic featuring photographs by rock photographer Mick Rock on Sept. 30.
A press release for the upcoming title describes how Rock was able to capture the “enduring legacy” of the film and also the elements of sexual fluidity and campiness of the iconic movie. “I could snap whatever caught my eye,...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show actors Barry Bostwick (Brad Majors), Nell Campbell (Columbia), and Patricia Quinn (Magenta) will celebrate the film’s 50th anniversary with a screening tour.
Audiences in more than 40 cities will have the opportunity to meet the stars, participate in a costume contest, and interact with a live performance by a local shadow cast, who will perform scenes on stage while the movie plays.
Select stops will also feature a traveling museum with artifacts and costumes from the film.
“Rocky has changed lives, not just ours, and had a profound effect on how we accept our differences in this world,” Bostwick comments. “We were fitted for our corsets and high heels and enthusiastically started singing songs that have endured for all these years. And ‘dammit Janet!’ I have made nerds cool.”

At its core, cult phenomenon “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is a movie about conservative values versus transgression. The audience surrogates, Brad (asshole!) and Janet (slut!), are two naïve virgins and the living embodiment of the word “stuffy” who are thrown into a world of mad scientist transvestites, hunky Frankensteins, and alien butlers and maids. Sure, the kinky, queer world the two squares fall into is dangerous, but it’s also a lot of fun, and “Rocky Horror” makes it clear that it’s also liberating for the young virgins to escape their conservative world, don some fishnet tights, and embrace their inner freak.
“Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror” is a documentary that loudly, and proudly, celebrates the freaks and the misfits who have found solace in the rock ‘n roll musical film since its 1975 premiere. And yet, it fits more in the “square” category than it should.

In our age of instant nostalgia, a big question for any documentarian or oral historian is how soon to take a look back at a beloved property.
Do it too soon and you’ll have more participants available, but with so little distance or reflection that you might as well be making a promotional Epk.
Do it too late and none of your first-hand sources will be available, so you might as well be making a shoebox diorama.
Watching Linus O’Brien’s Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror, a new documentary launching out of SXSW, my most frequently thought was that — actual quality of the film notwithstanding — it’s an absolute blessing to be getting this examination of the Rocky Horror phenomenon at this particular moment in time.

Success in the movie business is all about relativity. Comic book movies have been all the rage for more than two decades because they can make a lot of money, but those movies and similar franchise blockbusters are also tremendously expensive to make, often costing $200 million or more in the modern era. Relatively few movies rise to the level of mass appeal to justify such an investment. For everything else, it comes down to making the right movie for the right price given its intended audience.
Every so often, a movie comes around that was made for practically nothing and entered theaters with minimal expectations, only to blow those expectations right out of the water. Sometimes that is apparent on opening weekend. Sometimes it takes years to realize a low-budget flick became a massive success. In any event, when it does happen, it can be pretty special. So, let's have...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show was released over 40 years ago but is as popular as ever, and the most fabulous Rocky Horror quotes are a testament to its longevity. The film follows Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) as they go on a road trip after getting engaged and get stranded at Dr. Frank-n-Furters (Tim Curry) mansion. The film received mixed reviews upon release but developed a cult following. With hidden meanings about the glam rock movement and gender expression, there is plenty to dissect in each viewing.
The movie is still highly regarded due to the original music from Richard OBrien and the screenplay from OBrien and Jim Sharman. Tim Curry's stand-out film is often a yearly tradition for many around Halloween during which time Rocky Horror quotes and one-liners run amok, but there really isn't a bad time to watch it. When we talk about movies being hard to categorize or even succinctly summarize, this movie is the poster child for that statement. Almost 50 years on and that still holds true but how about is it good? Does a movie need to be put in a specific area or even be able to be explained to still be good? The Rocky Horror Picture Show is in a category all by itself and yet has had spinoffs of sorts and on-stage revivals since its inception and shows no signs of slowing down. I’m not even sure how the introduction to such a movie should be fleshed out so take a jump to the left, a step to the right, put your hands on your hips and bring your knees in tight. We are about to take a time warp and see if The Rocky Horror Picture Show still stands the Test of Time.

If the upcoming release of horror/comedy Lisa Frankenstein and the recent critical success of Poor Things has taught audiences anything, it's that there's still a lot of material to be mined from one of the richest texts ever written, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Those two films are the latest in a long line of cinematic adaptations inspired by Shelley's groundbreaking novel.
Over two centuries since Shelley first penned her tale of reanimated corpses and moral dilemmas, the character of Frankenstein's Monster has achieved cult-like status, often rivaling other iconic horror creatures like Dracula and Wolfman. From profound explorations of scientific ethics to satirical takes on the consequences of playing God, Frankenstein has provided fertile ground upon which dozens of filmmakers have explored its many themes, even if some of those films weren't always overt adaptations.

If a curious viewer would like to see Jim Sharman's 1975 cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," it should be stressed in the strongest possible terms that it should be seen in a theater with a live shadowcast. If you live near one of the few theaters that exhibits midnight shows of "Rocky Horror" on a regular basis, by all means, see it there. If it's your first time going, many "Rocky Horror" troupes will still put you through a "virgin sacrifice," the details of which are meant to be kept secret. You are meant to sing along with Richard O'Brien's songs, hoot and holler to the sight of Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick in their charming underclothes, and shout obscenities at the top of your lungs. There have been several movies released this year that have acquired huge amounts of critical acclaim, even though many audiences find themselves unable to connect with them completely. Recent examples include films like Barbarian, which is widely respected among horror fans but does very little for those who don't love the genre.
Reddit users have recently shared a few examples of movies that fill these criteria, even if many of the commenters often find themselves in the minority. There can be several reasons that a film might not work for a particular audience, but more often than not, it's something that can't really be pinned down.

In many Tim Curry movies, you may not even know he's there. Not because he lacks screen presence -- far from it in fact -- but because in many of his roles his face is concealed. Since his movie debut as Dr. Frank-n-Furter in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," Curry has been an actor whose roles often require heavy makeup. Throughout both Curry's scene-stealing turn as Pennywise in the 1990 "It" miniseries and in his performance as the devilish Lord of Darkness in Ridley Scott's 1985 fantasy film "Legend," his true face never appears.
However, Curry never lets the makeup do his job for him. As an actor, it's his job to entertain his audience, and you won't get very far if you try to do that with just a costume. Case-in-point: the Pennywise makeup isn't especially scary on its own, but Curry's manic malice makes the villain nightmarish.

Hello, dear readers! If you’ve been following along the last few weeks, we here at Daily Dead have been celebrating all the amazing horror and sci-fi films that were released throughout the year 1981. And even though we’ve covered so many fantastic films, I wanted to take an opportunity to turn the spotlight on just a few more standout movies that were released during that year that are deserving of some love before we bid our Class of 1981 celebration a fond farewell.
Cheers!
Deadly Blessing: Me, miss an opportunity to celebrate the work of my beloved Wes Craven? Unlikely. While Deadly Blessing may not be nearly as well known as many of his other projects, nor is it as confidently directed, but it’s certainly a film worth mentioning here simply due to the fact that it was a slasher movie looking to do something a bit more...

Tenacious D have put their spin on the Time Warp with an all-star cast. The rock band led by Jack Black and Kyle Gass have released a new music video, in which, they cover the classic tune from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. What's more, they got Susan Sarandon, who appeared in the 1975 movie version of the classic musical, to make an appearance. But she is far from the only celeb who got in on the fun with Kg and Jb. This is a star-studded affair.
The video was shot during quarantine, with Jack Black suiting up in several different Rocky Horror appropriate costumes throughout. He absolutely belts out the lyrics in true Tenacious D fashion as some footage from the movie is spliced in alongside the rocking. Kyle Gass also sings part of the tune. Throughout the video, various celebrities appear and they run the gamut from politicians to other famous musicians.

Hollywood Vampires: The Birth of Midnight Movies on L.A.'s Sunset Strip is a three-part series of essays by Tim Concannon.Targets: The Lost Midnight MOVIEIn revisiting Peter Bogdanovich’s Targets we’re invited to unearth an archaeology of cult cinema. Targets links the old Hollywood of Schwab's, Chateau Marmont and the Garden of Allah hotel to what, in 1968, was to be the new Hollywood of easy riders and raging bulls. "All the good movies have been made"—Peter Bogdanovich as Sammy Michaels, Targets1968's Targets, is the story of an aging film star played by expat Anglo Indian thespian, Boris Karloff. Karloff's Byron Orlok (named after Count Orlok in Murnau's 1922 Nosferatu) is clearly Karloff playing a grumpier version of himself. As two parallel stories converge in the film's Third Act, the Old Hollywood horror icon Orlok is confronted by a serial killer—gun nut and sniper Bobby Thompson,...

Roger Ebert once wrote that The Rocky Horror Picture Show was less a movie and more of a "social phenomenon." This is probably the most accurate way to describe the 1975 rock musical, as it just isn't an ordinary film. First released to a less-than-stellar reception, Rocky Horror eventually found long-lasting fame from an unlikely source: audience participation. Its original theatrical run didn't garner much praise, but the film came into its own when theaters began showing it at midnight screenings, now infamous for the almost ritualistic ways the audience dresses, shouts, and flings objects at the screen.
Rocky Horror is a legend of cult cinema-- one of the few movies that has earned that title again and again. The film follows what appears to be a whole married couple, Brad and Janet (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon), as they stay the night at a spooky old mansion owned by Dr.

Fox’s new made-for-tv musical remake of the cult favorite The Rocky Horror Picture Show aired last night and brought us on a second trip to the madcap castle of Dr. Frank N. Furter. The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do The Time Warp Again tries to recapture the wacky magic of the original source material but doesn’t quite succeed. Despite some good moments, this reboot only makes you want to watch the 1975 film again.
When people say “There are some movies that shouldn’t be remade”, they could be talking about The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). Based on the popular play, the bizarre cult favorite written by Richard O'Brien and Jim Sharman was a unique piece of cinematic satire that mixed 1970s sensibilities with edgy humor and nostalgia for old sci-fi and horror films. It was a ‘moment-in-time’ creation that hit all the right notes for...

Last night, something hideously unnatural and eminently appropriate for the Halloween season took place on Fox: Executives exhumed a 40-year-old cult classic and reanimated it with Frankensteinian mad-scientist abandon. The Rocky Horror Picture Show, still a regular seat-filler at raucous and generously sexual late-night screenings nationwide, got a primetime slot and a new audience, thanks to Fox's latest attempt to capitalize on the recent televised-musical trend. This time, they've ditched the live-performance aspect and pre-taped the special, casting Disney alumni Victoria Justice and Ryan McCartan as imperiled lovers Brad and Janet,...

Dear weirdos of the world — if you love the original “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” if it changed your life forever, if its musical numbers are embedded in the grooves of your brain, you probably shouldn’t watch the new Fox remake (subtitled “Let’s Do the Time Warp Again”), airing tonight.
Not that it’s stupefyingly bad, but because if you watch looking for the reasons you love the Jim Sharman-directed 1975 film, you’ll find yourself sorely disappointed.

And if you’re less familiar with the original film, watching this remake will technically introduce you to the premise, but won’t explain the film’s legacy. Here’s a simple explanation for the newest interpretation: The newly engaged Brad (Ryan McCartan) and Janet (Victoria Justice), driving down a rural road, get a flat tire, and go looking for help.

It was bound to happen eventually. With reboots and remakes popping up on television and in film more often than ever before, fans of The Rocky Horror Picture Show had plenty of warning that the 1975 cult classic would eventually be revisited. In fact, a remake of the film – itself based on the popular perennial stage production – has been in development in some form or another for more than a decade. And so, The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again finally heads to Fox this week, much to the chagrin of show creator Richard O’Brien.
The production is just the latest classic musical to be repackaged as a television event, following Fox’s great success with Grease: Live back in January. Ryan McCartan and Victoria Justice star as Brad Majors and Janet Weiss, the engaged couple who stumble onto the castle of the hedonistic Dr.

It’s no secret that television – and in particular, Fox – is on a re-boot roll right now. With The X Files, Prison Break, Lethal Weapon, and The Exorcist all filling out the small screen in 2016, the announcement of The Rocky Horror Picture Show was met with more of a sense of inevitability and resignation, than shock. Now, although it is not due for broadcast until the fall, the studio has released the first teaser trailer, and it does not disappoint.
When a concept has a long-standing, devoted cult following, in the way that The Rocky Horror Picture Show does, any attempt to re-boot or re-imagine that concept is often met with derision and anger. In this case, however, the concept in question is almost the exception to the rule. Fox is gearing up to do “The Time Warp” again with their reimagining of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Premiering this fall, the two-hour reboot is teased in its first official teaser trailer:
“Fox is doing the Time Warp, with a brand-new production of the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, set to air Fall 2016.
A reimagining of the original movie, the two-hour event follows sweethearts Janet (Victoria Justice, “Victorious”) and Brad (Ryan McCartan, “Liv & Maddie,” “Heathers the Musical”), who stumble upon Dr. Frank-n-furter’s (Emmy Award-nominated actress Laverne Cox, “Orange is the New Black”) bizarre abode. Actor and singer Staz Nair (“Game of Thrones”) will star in the role. Also featured in the event are American Idol alum Adam Lambert as Eddie,...
