The indie slasher is set on Sweetest Day, celebrated in the Midwest on the third Saturday in October with romantic deeds as well as acts of charity and kindness.

Genre favorites Catherine Corcoran (Terrifier), Kelly Maroney (Chopping Mall), and Russell Todd (Friday the 13th Part 2) appear in the film.

Nate Boyer (“Mayans M.C.”), Morgana Shaw (“Salem”), Deborah S. Craig (“The Blacklist”), Chris Labadie (M.F.A.), Alex MacNicoll (“The Society”), and Andy Davoli (“The Sopranos”) round out the cast.

Doug Hawley makes his feature directorial debut from a script he co-wrote with Boyer, based on a story by Hawley and Seay.

In areas scattered throughout the United States, the third Saturday of every October is considered to be Sweetest Day, a holiday of sorts where you’re meant to “share romantic deeds or expressions, and acts of charity and kindness.” Plus sweets. Now, Deadline reports that Sweetest Day has been given the holiday slasher treatment by director Doug Hawley, who assembled a cast that includes Dorée Seay (Pens and Pencils), Alex MacNicoll (Brilliant Minds), Chris Labadie (If It Bleeds), Nate Boyer (The Terminal List), Deborah S. Craig (Meet Cute), Morgana Shaw (Hit Man), Andy Davoli (Stiletto), Russell Todd (Friday the 13th Part 2), Kelli Maroney (Chopping Mall), and Catherine Corcoran (Terrifier) to bring the story to life.

Hawley makes his feature debut with Sweetest Day, which sees Seay taking on the role of ‘survivor girl’ Mindy as she prepares for the battle of her life against the undead confederate soldier that nearly killed her once before.

Making her feature directorial debut is Emily Lerer (Shameless), from a script by Adam Lebowitz-Lockard (The Shrink Next Door), who also stars as Matt, an impulsive millennial mensch who gets possessed by the spirit of his dead Yiddish grandma, Omi (Levine), after popping the question to his shiksa girlfriend, Christina (Hemingway). Film Mode Entertainment has announced the acquisition of Psychopomp, a new horror thriller starring Saw mainstay Shawnee Smith and produced by Final Destination creator Jeffrey Reddick. The news comes with first look images and a clip previewing a family’s bizarre nightmare.

The horror film is written and directed by Paul Etheredge.

Psychopomp follows “a couple, Robin and Daniel – long struggling with infertility – as they realize their dreams of parenthood by welcoming an orphan, Kathelia, into their home. However, those dreams crack under the weight of Kathelia’s erratic behavior, which only becomes more frighting when Robin discovers she’s inexplicably pregnant.”

I thought I’d try to watch a few more new horror movies by the end of 2018 – December is usually just for Christmas movies for me – but The Harrowing sounded interesting from the few things I’ve read about it so I gave it a go.

Since it can be quite an undertaking to keep up with everything hitting both the big and small screens (especially this fall—Wow), this writer has put together a preview of all the cinematic treats genre fans should have on their radars this September, October, and November.

On Salem Season 3 Episode 7, the dark lord was quite literally ripped apart at the seams in one of the best moments of the series. Their biggest enemy is perhaps dead. It was amazing!

Kudos to the special effects team and writers on Salem; this was a surprising curve ball in the final four episodes. I did not expect this twist yet. Did you?

Everything featured had the makings of a great climax. The location of the woods paired with the dark and dreary vibe added to the tension. And once the vines started grabbing him and ripping him apart, it worked perfectly. The prosthetics almost looked realistic.

There are filmmakers out there playing with the form, breaking the rules of narrative, and creating some truly unique works with distinctive voices. To find them, you might have to go down less familiar paths, but the rewards are films like Frank Mosley's "Her Wilderness," and today we have the exclusive trailer for his movie. Starring Lauren McCune, Morgana Shaw, Crystal Pate, Jack Elliott, and Riley Templeton, the fairy tale film follows four women wondering just how much power they wield in choosing their next stage in life. And Mosley — as writer, director, and editor — expands "Her Wilderness" across platforms, with an interactive online component paired with main feature that allows a richer exploration into the themes of responsibility, identity, and choice. Having already screened at Sidewalk Film Fest and Dallas Videofest, "Her Wilderness" will next appear at 14 Pews in Houston, Texas on March 7th, Kinoscope in New York.

Tomorrow is Father's Day of course, but for "Salem" fans it's also "Mather's Day." Join guest star Stephen Lang and series regular Seth Gabel, Increase and Cotton Mather, respectively, as they reflect on their characters' oh so addicting familial dysfunction.

The first thing people notice about The Haunting in Connecticut: Ghosts of Georgia is its unwieldy title. This title is obscenely long and it offers contradictory information. A sequel to the 2009 film A Haunting in Connecticut, this second film deals with a family moving into a new house. Obviously, spirits reside there. And, this is Tom Elkins first film as director. As well, many of the producers from the first film (Paul Brooks, Jeff Levine) return for this next entry. The crew brings together a competent production, which is dramatically driven by David Coggeshall's compelling script. There is a lot to take in with Ghosts of Georgia and horror fans will find lots to enjoy with this piece. The supposed true story begins with the Wyrick family.
