January 31 Will Be a Great Day for Al Pacino Fans
Image
On January 31st, fans of movie gangster Al Pacino can look forward to one of his most iconic films, Scarface, landing on a new streaming platform.

Say hello to Scarface as it arrives on Prime Video on January 31st. While Scarface was recently made available to stream on Netflix, it is not available in all countries. The American crime drama released December 9th, 1983, was technically a remake of a much older film, Scarface (1932). Scarface (1983) is one of Pacino's best-known films and sits at a 79% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

"The World, Chico, And Everything In It." - 30 Best Scarface Quotes
Image
The best Scarface quotes are a key reason Tony Montana has gone down in history as one of the greatest movie gangsters of all time. Al Pacino created one of the most iconic movie characters of all time with the Cuban immigrant turned drug lord Tony Montana. He is a terrifying, brutal, and unpredictable force of nature, however, he is also fascinating as his journey to become a man of power is incredibly entertaining, and filled with unforgettable Scarface quotes.

Scarface is a warped and violent take on the American dream and so much of the dialogue reflects Tony's twisted ambition that leads a path of violence in his wake. These impactful Scarface quotes help to define the lasting legacy of Brian De Palma's 1983 masterpiece and showcase why Tony Montana was a career-defining role for Al Pacino. Scarface is a movie that still packs a punch after 40 years, the...

Ángel Salazar, ‘Scarface’ Actor, Dies at 68
Image
Ángel Salazar, who played Chi Chi in “Scarface,” died Aug. 11, his representative Roger Paul confirmed to Variety. He was 68.

Salazar played Tony Montana’s (Al Pacino) henchman in the 1983 cult classic, where he joins the drug lord in trying to reach the pinnacle of Miami’s cocaine scene. Chi Chi saves Tony in the famous chainsaw scene, where he’s almost killed by rival gang leader Hector (Al Israel).

Toward the end of the film, Chi Chi tries to fend off foe Alejandro Sosa’s (Paul Shenar) hit men to protect Tony, using a submachine gun to hold them back. Once he runs out of ammo, he bangs on Tony’s office door, begging to be let in before he’s killed by the attackers. He’s the last of Tony’s crew to be killed, leaving the kingpin all alone.

Salazar started his career in New York City, where...

Arnold Schwarzenegger in Raw Deal (1986)
The Arrow In The Head Show Gets Down and Dirty With Schwarzenegger’s Raw Deal.
Arnold Schwarzenegger in Raw Deal (1986)
On today’s The Arrow In The Head Show, Lance Vlcek and John “The Arrow” Fallon take on the little seen yet highly entertaining Raw Deal (1986) starring the inimitable Arnold Schwarzenegger at his smug best. After Conan, The Terminator, Red Sonja and Commando – Arnie took on a very different kind of role at this point in his career and showcased glimpses of the charm and gravitas that he would eventually fully display in films like True Lies and Kindergarden Cop.

The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kathryn Harrold, Robert Davi and Paul Shenar and is about:

A former FBI agent turned small-town sheriff agrees to help the FBI chief infiltrate the Chicago mafia when the FBI chief’s son is killed by them.

The M.O. of The Arrow in the Head Show is: After many years behind the scenes, we’ve decided to take our sarcastic, booze-influenced style into the...

Scarface: Where Tony Montana Went Wrong
Image
“All I have in this world is my balls and my word, and I don’t break them for no one,” Tony Montana declares in the 1983 gangster classic, Scarface. Yet Al Pacino’s antihero breaks both in his quest for money, power, and women. And just as he is on the brink of winning the trifecta, he is blown away like so much dust up a nose.

Did he lose because the Cuban mobster didn’t heed the advice of his first crime boss? Or is it because he just couldn’t stand to see his sister and his best friend wearing his-and-her pajamas? In truth, Montana’s fall can probably be traced back to when he learned to speak English by “watching guys like Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney.”

Directed by Brian De Palma, and written by Oliver Stone, Scarface is a remake of Howard Hawks’ vastly influential 1932 mob movie,...

Geno Silva Dies, Scarface Actor Was 72
Image
We've lost another big screen star as character actor Geno Silva has reportedly passed away. With a career spanning decades, one of Silva's most notable roles includes playing the hitman who dispatches Tony Montana in Scarface in one of cinema history's all-time biggest moments. According to reports, Silva died at his Los Angeles home on Monday due to complications from a form of dementia called frontotemporal degeneration. He was 72 years old.

Silva was born on Jan. 20, 1948, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. As an actor, his most recognizable role is perhaps that of the henchman nicknamed "The Skull" in the classic gangster movie Scarface. In the hit movie, The Skull is a silent hitman hired by drug lord Alejandro Sosa (Paul Shenar) to take out iconic character Tony Montana (Al Pacino), which he does in the climax of the film. Although many of his colleagues are taken out in the process, it's...

Scarface 4K Ultra HD
Brian De Palma’s 1983 saga of hoodlum Tony Montana is an exceptional remake that’s become a classic almost by default — it’s too strikingly original to ignore. De Palma did the Latin male stereotype no favors, while bringing attention to the outrageous drug trafficking aided by law enforcement and criminal banks in a shameful decade of excess. Al Pacino added a page to his catalog of great performances, and the careers of Michelle Pfeiffer and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio were duly launched. De Palma gives this one ‘classical’ direction: he skips his former film school cinema games and homages to Hitch the Master.

Review: Netflix's 'Narcos' Starring Wagner Moura And Boyd Holbrook
It’s no surprise that Pablo Escobar’s decades-long rise from petty street crime to the “The King of Cocaine” has inspired more than a dozen iterations on screen. Beyond the varied TV documentaries, his persona has loomed large in cinema and the small screen ever since his inspiration for Paul Shenar’s Sosa character in 1983’s “Scarface”; Cliff Curtis’ brief but effective turn in “Blow”; last year’s “Escobar: Paradise Lost” starring Benicio del Toro; and the fantastic documentary “The Two Escobars.” The list of upcoming and recent failed attempts at telling Escobar’s story is nearly as long (Oliver Stone and Joe Carnahan each tried, unsuccessfully, to mount a film), and while the kingpin is clearly attractive to Hollywood and beyond, one constant remains — he’s yet to be the lead character in his own story. And it’s an unfortunate fact that continues with “Narcos,” the latest...

100 Essential Action Scenes: Shootouts
Sound on Sight undertook a massive project, compiling ranked lists of the most influential, unforgettable, and exciting action scenes in all of cinema. There were hundreds of nominees spread across ten different categories and a multi-week voting process from 11 of our writers. The results: 100 essential set pieces, sequences, and scenes from blockbusters to cult classics to arthouse obscurities.

Shootouts, unlike any other type of action scenes, put death in the forefront of the audience’s mind. Whereas a car chase draws the attention onto the race, or a fight scene onto the pursuit of victory, shootouts test the mortality of our protagonists and anti-heroes. It’s more than just a hail of bullets that matters on screen, it’s who those bullets are clipping down or propping up. Legends can be made in a flurry of lead. The last man standing after the fray isn’t always the best or...

Al Pacino in Scarface (1983)
Scarface Invades Los Angeles
Al Pacino in Scarface (1983)
In today's cinematic landscape, the word "remake" is often associated with disdain among critics and ardent movie fans. It's probably safe to say, though, that even the hardcore haters of remakes will praise one remake in particular, the 1982 classic Scarface, a movie that forever changed the landscape of crime and criminals, primarily through Al Pacino's iconic portrayal of Tony Montana. Scarface is finally making its debut on the Blu-ray format on September 6, with a luxurious Limited Edition Gift Set also available on that date, which comes with a handcrafted cigar humidor.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment held a special event at the Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles last night to celebrate this high-def release, which featured exquisite gourmet Cuban food, a performance by Ludacris, and lavish setting which Tony Montana would have surely approved of. Despite all these bells and whistles, most in attendance were likely drawn to the...

[DVD Review] The Secret of Nimh
Pitch a children’s movie to a studio about a mouse, a secret order of superintelligent rats, a bumbling crow, and their adventures on a farm and chances are they might go for it. Such was the basic premise of The Secret of Nimh, except the tone and imagery within makes it a bit too much for most children; this might explain its poor box office performance back in 1982. It’s not the idea that doesn’t work, as many children’s stories have centered on rodents and their adventures, and something similar in plot and theme was the basis of Brian Jacques’s Redwall books which would follow The Secret of Nimh four years later. No, The Secret of Nimh sits in its own corner because it attempts a tone and style most weren’t and still aren’t looking for in a film for kids.

Scarface Review | Nothing Exceeds Like Excess
Remakes are a sketchy business and, as the more discriminating among us often note, tend to arrive from the most unimaginative of filmmakers, who are merely looking to capitalize upon the consumption of a nostalgic audience. So, it's with a post-dated sense of cynicism that Brian De Palma's initially ill-received remake of Scarface (based upon the 1932 Howard Hawks film) revolves around the ultimate icon of conspicuous consumption: Tony Montana. For better or worse, this character was one of Al Pacino's first scenery-snorting performances, which actually may have been the beginning of the end of an actor who was once noted for subtle turns of character. Decades later, Scarface has inspired an obscene amount of memorabilia and even a video game, upon which members of the bling-bling generation tap away with a total absence of irony. Within the past few years alone, Montana's "Say hello to my leetle fren" line...

Awesome Orsons: Who's the best on-screen Welles?
Christian McKay's performance in Richard Linklater's film has got tongues wagging about a possible Oscar nod. Was he some kind of an Orson?

"What you're really doing is […] presenting to the public that part of you which corresponds to the part which you're playing. There is a villain in each of us, a murderer in each of us, a saint in each of us. And the actor is the man or woman who can eliminate from himself those things which will interfere with that truth."

It's perhaps fitting that Orson Welles maintained such views on acting: that each time the camera rolls or the curtain rises, the players are pulling out aspects of themselves in order to portray particular characters. For when Welles himself has been depicted on screen, the results have been remarkably varied. For such a studied individual, there seems to be no one interpretation of him,...

Orson Welles
War of the Welles: Seven Actors Who've Played Orson
Orson Welles
Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" is about one man from many perspectives. As a reporter travels the country in search of the meaning of Charles Foster Kane's last words, he hears stories about the man from wives, co-workers, friends, and guardians, all of whom see Kane's life differently. In the trailer, Welles describes the many dimensions of his character in the narration: "Kane is a hero, and a scoundrel, a no account and a swell guy. A great lover, a great American citizen and a dirty dog."

Certainly, Welles believed that one man could encompass all of these dissimilar traits. And in recent years, enough actors have portrayed enough variations of Welles himself to suggest that the acting/directing wunderkind, like Kane, was just as complex an individual. Some films have portrayed him as a hero, others as a scoundrel. Some, like Richard Linklater's new film "Me and Orson Welles,...

Has Kevin Williamson Officially Signed On for a New 'Scream' Trilogy?
The screen capture you see below was sent to me by someone named Caroline and I have no way of confirming the legitimacy of the report featured in the capture, but it would seem to ring true considering all the Scream 4 coverage Bloody-Disgusting has been reporting over the past month including this report which came one week prior to the date listed on the capture which appears to be a look at the William Morris Agency Intranet. (I did the photo manipulation work as it actually came as one big traditional screen cap.) Photo: Someone's Desktop So, is original Scream creator ready to get back on board the Ghostface franchise with an all new trilogy? Bd says he has been working on it already and they are making financial offers to David Arquette, Courtney Cox Arquette and Neve Campbell to appear in cameos as the franchise is looking to skew younger.
